Restoration of a Worthy Magnum Opus.......2006-03-01
Fortunate is the arts library to have the restored and embellished 1977 monograph on the life and work of American artist Joseph Cornell, an artist whose importance not only to the craft of assemblage but to the history of American art continues to grow as the years pass. Author Diane Waldman initially based her monograph on extensive interviews with Cornell and his confreres in preparing the 1967 retrospective of Cornell's art for the Guggenheim Museum. And fine though that now extinct monograph was, it was important to update it with the added information gleaned from the 1978 gift of the bulk of Cornell's archives donated by the heirs of Cornell to the Smithsonian Museum, forming the Joseph Cornell Study Center in Washington, DC.
But enough of background. Waldman the writer and historian presents here one of the more sensitive tributes to Joseph Cornell in print. Included in this rather brief book are over forty color plates of many of Cornell's greatest works. The color reproductions and photography of these basically three-dimensional works is outstanding and allows the viewer to pause with each work, enhance the visual appreciation with the accompanying writing by the author, and then return once again to the biographical data of a man at odds with conformity and with somewhat fractured social graces.
Joseph Cornell was a unique artist and one whose impact on all forms of art (especially the eventual 'installation art' phase) is yearly more appreciated. This fine book is as sound a source of information on his life and works as any of the now many volumes on the shelves. Highly Recommended to both the novice and the expert. Grady Harp, February 06
An Excellent Primer On Cornell and His Work.......2002-11-15
Finally, a beautiful, comprehensive book about Joseph Cornell and his work. Diane Waldman knew Cornell intimately ever since she was an art student (and through doing gallery shows for him), and this affinity shows; this is ultimately a book of love and tribute to a friend.
The biographical material is excellent. Most fascinating segments deal with Cornell's stranger sides, such as when at his brother Robert's funeral, Joseph put a sheet over his head and laughed, creeping everyone out, and explained it was only a side joke that Robert would have understood. Cornell was terribly timid in front of women (particularly the ones he fancied) and had a complete dependence on his mother (he died months after she did). Waldman probes these and other significant personal issues (such as his association with Surrealism, and how the younger artists that have passed through him have influenced his work) and examines how they factored in Cornell's art. The book is generous with illustrations - Waldman supports her points with not only Cornell's work, but with other artists that were influential to him.
However, it is the lonely and telling poetry of Cornell's work that is the heart of this book. The boxes that Waldman chooses to include are presented intelligently, and beautifully. The innocence and nostalgia of each box is lovingly portrayed. The Medici series - Cornell's especially heartbreakingly beautiful and mysteriously passionate work - is presented perfectly by Waldman with thoughtful commentary and context, capturing in full its yearning and ardor. Waldman has given us a book that speaks eloquently about why Cornell is an artists people will remember for generations hereafter.

Relatively comprehensive look at the American Film Institute.......2006-02-01
There are plenty of good books available on what films are out there and other books of the art of making films. We can find vertical market books on specific subjects that are film related. However this book is exactly hat the title implies. There is more depth to this book than just an overview or an introduction book. Although this book could be a good coffee table book it also makes a good desk reference book.
With 608 pages, most containing partial if not totally glossy color snaps from the famous and obscure movies of our time. The different subject or chapters have color coded tabs on the edge of the page allowing for quickly finding the information sought.
Although designed as a reference I found it more fun to read page by page picking up gems here and there that would never have been found by just reference searches.

A Good Guide for Those New to Film.......2005-08-20
I guess I should have realized from the title that this wouldn't be a comprehensive and in-depth guide. It is a good overview of film history and important movies for those just coming to know classic cinema. Otherwise, it is a bit basic and leaves a lot to be desired. The photos are great, the paper glossy, it's just that the message is a bit on the thin side.

...especially if you are a film student and/or studying for a movie trivia game show. I love that it has loads of pictures and tables/lists. Plus, it has any and everything you need to know about the movies. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who would like to know more about film. I promise, you won't be disappointed! :-)

If you are looking for a one-volume source containing the information about movies and the people who produce them, this is an excellent reference manual. If information makes you high, this book will make you feel slightly heady. There is information on everything from film history to the biographies of major players. I enjoyed the hundreds of photos, quotes and factoids.

The Index is very helpful for finding movie information super fast (although I think they should consider expanding the index even further in future editions) and the AFI has gone out of their way to make this book a dream to read.

Fascinating book.......2007-08-16
This story is by turns wonderful (especially early on), depressing (especially toward the end), and hilarious (pretty much throughout), but always fascinating. Years of distance from the events allows Scully be as critical of himself as anyone else, and this gives the book an authentic quality. I only know the Dead's best-known songs, and I knew almost nothing about the band or Garcia before reading this book, yet it was a page-turner for me. Other musicians and cultural figures of the era make interesting appearances too.

If you are wanting to read the "back story" behind the music and are just now starting your homework, let me suggest you start here. Why? Why here, when this is obviously a flawed, overly subjective work seen through a prism of chemical distortions, bringing us what are probably broken and incorrectly reassembled memories? Because this is a book you will finish. You will read this from cover to cover and most likely love it, and because this book is (more than any other out there) about the FUN of the Grateful Dead. That part gets left out - a lot.
Other reviewers are not wrong - the last half of this book is largely about Scully and Garcia's drug addiction. But it isn't, as is made clear, like everyone else was a health food nut. (Well, Bobby was, but that's beside the point.) And there is also a ton of history going on during this time, too. (For one thing, we learn some of the reasons that Bob Dylan was so devoted to Jerry and said such gracious things about him later.) But what made it all work, the glue that held it together, was the fact that this music was just so much more fun than anything else going on. This book is about that fun, and this book is fun to read. There aren't many books that have made me laugh harder.
Where you go after this is your own business: if you want to read a superb biography and perhaps the most important book of the whole genre, read the Garcia biography. "Dark Star" is heartbreaking but very insightful, and much of it makes "Living With The Dead" seem tame by comparison, as it is all first person interviews of persons involved. The McNally book is probably the completest, but is often as dry as toast and completely disengaged from the joy this band dispensed. So start here for fun, and to get a taste for what the life was like, and put a little color in the cheeks of all those black and white photographs.
And as to why this book doesn't get much into the music, it's because no book could get in to the music and talk about anthing else. Scully was not a Dead head - he would probably rather have seen a Stones concert any night. He worked for the band, he didn't follow them for love of the music. If you want to get inside the actual music, that's a whole separate library you need to read. We aren't talking about the songs, we're talking about the band, and this is as good a place as any to meet them, and better than most.
Honest and Compelling Work.......2005-09-21
This book's rather tired "Gonzo" style and endless discussion of drug abuse are what is best and worst about it. How is it that one so long associated with the Grateful Dead and, particularly, with Jerry Garcia has failed to arrive at any more mature perspective on it than this book reveals. Scully seems still to be tickled pink by the fact that this or that group of squares got dosed back in whenever it was. Deep in his heart he seems to mourn the fact that he'll never bed an underage groupie again. And, yet this seems what is most gripping about this book for one such as myself for whom there simply no question of interest - the experience of endless hours of listening to the Grateful Dead and catching shows has simply molded what I am. The apolitical posture. The notion that there was something radical or even revolutionary about tripping and drug use per se. The celebration of blind destructiveness. So much of the truth of not only Garcia and the band but of the scene they created is given expression here in a way that gives it a very definite objectivity, that allows one better to reflect. We are now at least a decade and a half from a time when anyone could imagine himself to still be living in the "long sixties." That time is quite definitively past. Scully's book in many ways seems not to have written recently, but to emerge from the early 80s sometime. Or perhaps Scully kept good journals and did little more than edit them together. At any rate, the book has a certain immediacy that one finds it difficult to imagine Scully could produce from memory.
I agree with much of what others have said regarding the vindictiveness (and inaccuracy) of Scully's comments on Weir. The idea that Bobby wasn't brilliant in his own right as a guitarist and ideal complement to Garcia is laughable for anyone familiar with the music from the period of Scully's so-called Bobby problem.
And the best part of the book as a work of memoir is definitely the early chapters on the Haight scene.

I found the book to be fairly accurate, BUT most of it is Rock Scully's personal opinion and experience. He seems to forget that you aren't reading the book to learn about him, but to gain more insight into the band. Overall it wasn't too bad. I have read it a couple of times and enjoyed it. Rock Scully was a close personal freind for many years and he does capture the pre-band era of the Grateful Dead.
RESPONSE TO THE REVIEW ENTITLED CASH COW.......2004-10-11
The author of the review, "A reader," claims to have worked for the Dead, but inaccurately spell's Garcia's first name several times "Gerry" and Mickey's last name "Heart." As such, I have real doubts this guy indeed did work for the band and hence, his comments on the book seem a bit suspect.

More Warm Bodies Needed.......2006-02-08
I'm rather surprised and disappointed to see this book has no previous reviews, because it's an important, challenging work that should not be ignored. McNally points out that currently fashionable theories of language, text, and culture--especially the "postmodern" theories--are highly idealist in the bad old sense; they privilege words and ideas to the virtual exclusion of bodies, labor, and even the physical world. Intellectuals, always people of the word, move again in a realm as abstract and ethereal as that of the German idealist Kantians of the 19th century. This has always been a right-wing ideology ("progressive" postmodernists take note). McNally traces much of postmodernism to Nietzsche, and lays out Nietzsche's right-wing ideology (along with notes--not enough for me--about the Nazi heritage of Heidegger, de Man, and others).
So far, so good. This has been a desperately needed critique for years. The problems come when McNally tries to deal with theories of language and linguistics. He doesn't understand Saussure; he think Saussure was talking about words and meanings, and faults Saussure for using abstract economics (as metaphor) rather than real political economy and labor. No, Saussure (a thorough Kantian, as McNally says, but not a fool) was talking about the more basic structures of language: phonemes, grammar, system. These indeed have nothing to do with labor or modes of production--Greek is still identifiably Greek, in spite of the change from Neolithic farming to Athenian brilliance to modern (post?)capitalism. Another problem is McNally's use of Freud--a great pioneer, but long superseded, and not really usable as a source for up-to-date psychological insight.
More serious, to me, is what I would consider a slide by McNally into idealism. McNally is a Marxian, so he uses not only Marx' materialist ideas but also Marx' more idealist concepts, like "commodity fetishism" (which is not only a vague, touchy-feely concept, but also a rather racist phrase, "fetishism" being the old prejudicial term for African traditional religions).
This being said, I wish this book were widely read. I fear the errors noted here (and other problems with linguistics) have kept it from being fully appreciated. The message is critically important and sorely needed. We have to get back to theories of meaning that are grounded in physical reality, notably working and enduring humans--bodies and all.

Indispensable information!.......2002-06-02
A book about the prostate is worth zilch unless it minces no words. The author of this one is totally honest. That is what makes this one indispensable if you, like me and other millions, have prostate concerns. My problem is not (yet) serious or urgent but I find the book highly revealing and very helpful. And I now know if that is the case at this time, then if and when my Gleason Scale number goes up (see the book!) and I face surgery, the book will be a necessity to keep at my side. It sure does not read like a novel but it is Information with a capital I. The three key words in describing what Newt Malerman has written, are candid, informative, and helpful.

The content, in the beginning, was difficult for a non political/history reader....but before long I was locked in and was amazed...appalled...at the role of our government in keeping the Haitian people in 'slavery' while claiming to support democracy. Life is a political game to which I have closed my eyes for too long! I am ashamed of the underhanded political dealings my government has been part of in keeping the poor people of Haiti prisoners of the elite and military powers of their own country....Paul Farmer has no ax to grind....he should be applauded and held in high esteme for his courage and wisdom ....and for the first hand exteriences of Haiti that he shares with the little people of the world...us. We give too much trust and power to our gov/politicians who work the system to their own advantage. Learn something citizens of America.....we are being led like sheep....we are part of the problem of the economic abuses being leveled against a small, destitute , struggling country that is fighting for their right to govern themselves as they see fit, with no real support from the rest of the world...least of all the U.S.
Disappointing.......2005-02-09
A disappointing biased review of the history and politics of Haiti. The conspiring bogeymen consist of the USA, France, Canada, the UN, the World bank, the IMF, JFK, the OAS, Bill Clinton, George Bush, most journalists and especially that right wing mouthpiece - the NY Times. This narrative can be likened to the blind mans description of the elephant. A disjointed and bizarre introduction by Noam Chomsky is included.
