Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly powerful.......2007-01-11

This book is an incredible reference for color theory and history. The inclusion of full panels of color reference make it one of the most useful books on the subject I've ever found.

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2006-02-24

I am in fashion design and have found the color palettes very useful in designing collections. Also, the text is informative without being boring.

5 out of 5 stars Great color palettes.......2005-07-09

I'm a graphic designer and this is a great book to look for color palettes. It explains what period the palette is from and gives you cultural information from that period. The palettes are different and beautiful. Margaret Walsh is a highly respected woman for her color knowledge.

3 out of 5 stars Unwieldly and Difficult To Use.......2003-12-23

The dual spiral constuction of this book makes any it practically impossible to read through the text while keeping the color swatches in view. I find the book to be shabbily put together - the spiral separated from the binding after one gentle use, so I was glad to have picked it up at a bargain book outlet.

There is some useful information in there, but getting it all together is not simple.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent analysis of color palettes across art history.......1999-01-06

This is an excellent book if you want to compare and analyze the basic color palettes used by various art movements and at different times in history. The unique double spiral bound book allows you to look at color illustrations and flip the palettes independently so you to compare and contrast palettes and artwork. I think this would be useful for artists and designers of all sorts including theatre designers.

Now, the Lucasfilm creative team is back with Attack of the Clones, the second movie in the prequel series. And Chronicle Books has captured the newest story in the pages of our mighty big little book. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You Must Take This In Perspective.......2004-07-23

This book is not meant to be a complete account of the story. It is an abbreviated version meant for a quick read to get a gist of the storyline. Taking that into perspective, it is a good book to get if you are a Star Wars fan. However, if you expect a complete chronicle of the story, then you will be sorely dissapointed, like the last reviewer was. It is meant to be a collectible to be put on a shelf with the other abbreviated version of the other movies.

      2 out of 5 stars Halfway decent children's book.......2002-06-07

I'm not sure what I expected, but this wasn't it. The story is clear enough, but the writing style is very bland. An attempt is made at Yoda's style of speaking, but without much success. The illustrations are not quite right. There's no excitement here, either in prose or pictures.

Though it's a book for kids (my guess, ages 8-12), it seems to me the small size would put off most children.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone except a Star Wars completist.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide on this Subject.......2002-12-14

Before I heard of this book, I came into contact with its author through the website "Find a Grave." For 20 years, I had been searching fruitlessly for the gravesite of prohibition gangster Legs Diamond. My interest was one of historical curiosity (I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that Diamond had been a boyhood hero of mine), and I meant no disrespect to anyone, living or dead, but it was impossible to locate this gravesite. I couldn't quite understand the reticence of cemetery personnel to divulge its location, considering that Diamond has been dead for over 70 years, but such was the case. No printed guide I consulted was helpful (the most I learned was the name and borough of the cemetery he was buried in and the fact that the gravesite was unmarked). I contacted the cemetery office, I talked to gravediggers in the cemetery, and was ready to give up completely when, in desperation and without any expectation of success, I went onto a "Find a Grave" forum and spelled out the frustrating experience I had been through. Mr. Wilson responded and within a day's time, using Mr. Wilson's information and contemporary photos of Diamond's funeral, I was able to locate the exact spot of his final "Resting Place." For those with an interest in this subject, Mr. Wilson's book is indispensable. His biographical descriptions are concise and accurate and one would be hard put to think of anyone deceased, famous or infamous, who is not included in this book. Actors, writers, criminals, politicians, athletes, politicians, scientists, artists- they're all here. The price may be steep, but, speaking for myself, it was well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Resting Places! Great Book!.......2002-09-27

This is Great book! I have been using it for a year now!

5 out of 5 stars Only The Best.......2002-03-26

This is the best purchase I have made in the past year. In spite of what seems like a hefty price tag, it is worth every penny.
Scott Wilson, through a large number of reputable contributors, has assembled a comprehensive list of the burial places of virtually every celebrity/historical figure that I can think of. In addition to providing burial locations, Mr. Wilson also provides information regarding the deceased person's claim to fame, cause of death, and anecdotal stories pertaining to his individual subject, as well as dates of birth and death.
While the book claims to provide over 7,000 "resting places", in actuality far more grave locations are provided as in many cases Mr. Wilson provides locations for prominent families on the basis of a prominent family member's name or a historial event such as Titanic victims.
In the four months since I have had this book, I have only come up with two or three people who are not listed in this book.
This book is essential to anyone who likes to visit cemeteries or as they say 'get within six feet of your favorite dead celeb'.

5 out of 5 stars This is truly an amazing work........2002-01-10

Scott Wilson has generously provided us with THE definitive text on this intriguing subject. Concise burial sights, birth and death dates are covered for over 7000 famous individuals. If this is not enough, his encylopedia also gives historical mini-bios of each of them and their relatives too!

The depth of this text is outstanding, and is highly recommended for anyone with a passion for business, political, sports, entertainment, military or journalistic history....and everything in between.

This work is one of the best bargains you will ever find. It will never be outdated, and will continue to be one of the greatest resources on this topic. All this for just over a penny a person!

5 out of 5 stars What Girlfriends Do.......1999-12-21

I just received my copy of What Girlfriends Do yesterday. I was lucky enough to appear on one of the pages of the book with my girlfriend that I have known since the Sixth Grade. I had been very anxious to see the final copy, and to see Laura's other photographs. I feel lucky to be a part of this fine book. While flipping through the pages, each photograph reminds me of different stages in my life and the various girlfriends I have shared special moments with throughout these stages. Laura did a wonderful job of capturing that feeling of friendship only women can understand. I like the size of the book and will certainly buy more copies to give to my Girlfriends of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars A sensitive and emotive group of photographs.......1999-11-09

This is a photographer who may well be the eye of a new generation. All you need do is see her images to learn that the computerized perfection of today's cameras means little compared to the emotion and joy she captures time and again.

5 out of 5 stars Classic photographs of a beautiful subject.......1999-10-20

The photographs in this book are absolutely beautiful. I absolutely love this book! While hinting of Cartier-Bresson and Sally Mann, this is distinctly the vision of Laura Straus. The wonder of childhood fantasy and potential, the balance of teenager feelings, the depth of adult friendships are all artistically portrayed in this attractive book. A great gift for girlfriends of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent witty photos of women interacting-all ages........1999-10-12

Laura Straus's What Girlfriends Do combines wit, tenderness and good observation in photographs which giave a sense of the range and vitality of women's relationships today. The book is a perfect size for a gift for people who value the mix of fun and artistic sensibility.

            Book Description

"Tomcat Alley" contains over seven-hundred images depicting the venerable F-14 Tomcat, bureau number by bureau number. Each U.S. Navy Tomcat is traced from date of delivery through February 1998. After a brief introduction, informative captions provide details concerning every Tomcat model, modification, and the fate of each aircraft including those stricken due to operational accidents, retired to the "bone-yard", or resting as "gate guards" at military installations around the country. The majority of Tomcats are shown in full-color with images displaying every paint scheme worn by the F-14, including many water-based schemes applied during various tactical exercises and deployments. Images also include every squadron commander's aircraft, nose art, tail colors, over 150 patches and insignia, bicentennial schemes, and Tomcats which participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Additionally, the Su-22, MiG-23, and Hi-8 killers are depicted along with "movie star" Tomcats from "Final Countdown," "Topgun," and "Executive Decision.", over 875 color photographs, 9" x 12", appendices

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful concept, but dated.......2006-11-18

A very detailed and fascinating roll call of the 712 F-14's built. Unfortunately, the book is current only through 1998.

This book could become the definitive Tomcat bible if it was updated to include all Tomcats through the final retirement in September and provide some coverage of the many ceremonies that took place as the Tomcat flew into the sunset.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for ALL F-14's.......2006-10-06

I'm a former F-14 RIO (85-93), and was the FITWING Senior Flight Surgeon at NAS Oceana from 2000-2003 - I loved going through this book. I matched all the planes that I flew over the years with my log book. There were some discrepancies, but nothing major. I was involved with flying many of the aircraft to the desert in Arizone for their final resting place - And, finally, it was wonderful to be at the Final Flight and Retirement on the Beautiful Day at NAS Oceana in September. I met the author of the this book and bought a signed copy. Keep up the good work. MUGS

5 out of 5 stars I would buy it only if ..........2006-02-26

February 26/2006. For the last 7 years the Tomcat has served and excelled in different roles and big conflicts have been present in all this time. And now the Tomcat's service in the Navy is almost over. A couple of cruises I guess and that's it. Now is the perfect time to update this book. Then it would be like a Tomcat Bible.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-09-22

There is not too much to read in the F-14 book, as it
is a "F-14 Roll Call" type book. This means it has a
photo of each and every F-14 ever made, and the final
disposition of each aircraft. If the aircraft was in
any special operations, that is mentioned also. For
            photos, specific aircraft markingins, squadron
markings and F-14 history I thought the book was very
            well done and excellent!

            5 out of 5 stars Impressive...most impressive.......2004-06-16

For those who fly, maintain, or just admire the F-14, this definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf. Filled with over 700 photos of Tomcats, including the bureau numbers of said planes, this is without a doubt the "year book" of the F-14. I only wish this book receives an update with even more photos of the remaining Tomcats in our inventory and where they stand today (book was printed in 1998).

Including information such as the planes that appeared in Hollywood films, squadron tail markings, as well as patches, you will not find a more complete reference title anywhere on the market. It is a bit pricey, but well worth the money.

The events of September 11 have seemingly been covered, analyzed, and discussed from every angle imaginable. So the subject matter alone of Jim DeFede's The Day the World Came to Town makes it noteworthy. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 38 commercial airliners carrying over 6,000 passengers were forced, as a precautionary measure, to land in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Due to the ongoing closure of U.S. airspace, the passengers spent four days in this isolated town of 10,000 before being allowed to continue on their way. In that time, Gander's residents rallied together to extend a kind of hospitality that seems too expansive for the word hospitality. Townspeople not only opened schools and legion halls for use as emergency shelters, they invited the passengers into their homes for showers, meals, and warm beds while local businesses simply gave toiletries and clothing to passengers stuck without luggage. Despite the grim consequences that led to the situation, DeFede finds humor: two flight attendants are offered a car for sightseeing by a local woman who happened to be driving by; the stranded chairman of Hugo Boss finds himself shopping for men's underwear at the local Wal-Mart. But the real message of the book is how, even in times of great turmoil and conflict, people can and must look to one another for comfort, help, and hope. --John Moe

            Book Description

"For the better part of a week, nearly every man, woman, and child in Gander and the surrounding smaller towns stopped what they were doing so they could help. They placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked for nothing in return. They affirmed the basic goodness of man at a time when it was easy to doubt such humanity still existed."

When thirty-eight jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, due to the closing of United States airspace, the citizens of this small community were called upon to come to the aid of more than six thousand displaced travelers.

Roxanne and Clarke Loper were excited to be on their way home from a lengthy and exhausting trip to Kazakhstan, where they had adopted a daughter, when their plane suddenly changed course and they found themselves in Newfoundland. Hannah and Dennis O'Rourke, who had been on vacation in Ireland, were forced to receive updates by telephone on the search for their son Kevin, who was among the firefighters missing at the World Trade Center. George Vitale, a New York state trooper and head of the governor's security detail in New York City who was returning from a trip to Dublin, struggled to locate his sister Patty, who worked in the Twin Towers. A family of Russian immigrants, on their way to the Seattle area to begin a new life, dealt with the uncertainty of conditions in their future home.

The people of Gander were asked to aid and care for these distraught travelers, as well as for thousands more, and their response was truly extraordinary. Oz Fudge, the town constable, searched all over Gander for a flight-crew member so that he could give her a hug as a favor to her sister, a fellow law enforcement officer who managed to reach him by phone. Eithne Smith, an elementary-school teacher, helped the passengers staying at her school put together letters to family members all over the world, which she then faxed. Bonnie Harris, Vi Tucker, and Linda Humby, members of a local animal protection agency, crawled into the jets' cargo holds to feed and care for all of the animals on the flights. Hundreds of people put their names on a list to take passengers into their homes and give them a chance to get cleaned up and relax.

The Day the World Came to Town is a positively heartwarming account of the citizens of Gander and its surrounding communities and the unexpected guests who were welcomed with exemplary kindness.

5 out of 5 stars Great quick read.......2007-07-12

It was great to read a book about 9/11 that had a positive spin. The description of the town and characters makes me want to visit Gander Newfoundland someday.

4 out of 5 stars How a town came to t he rescue of stranded passengers and crew.......2007-05-13

This is an absolutely fascinating true story of how the residents of Gander, Newfoundland, rallied around when many aircraft were diverted there on 9/11 when US airspace was closed. How the town coped with more planes and people than it had ever seen before at once is a legendary story of human kindness and support for others. Very hard to put down once started. Will bring tears (mainly of joy) to many eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A Story About the Truest and Kindest People on Earth.......2006-09-29

My son and daughter-in-law were part of the mass of passengers stranded in Newfoundland after 9-11 and I will always be grateful to the Newfies for the loving way that they cared for them. I am also grateful to Jim Defede for writing this book to thank them for all of us.

This book clearly shows how people the world over should be living their lives. Thank you Newfies.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject but Poorly Written.......2006-09-11

I found this book to be extremely interesting. It tells of a true story unknown to many. However, while the subject was excellent, the quality of the writing was poor. I would not conider this book a final product. It is similar to a draft, with words spelled incorrectly and improper grammar. The publishers should be ashamed for printing such a poor quality manuscript that had not been proof read.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Human Nature.......2006-05-19

If you ever wanted to read a book that took the best part of human nature, you've found it. The people behind 9/11 were expecting the worst of humanity to come about, instead the result was the best humanity. The people of Gander captured my heart and I would love to meet those wonderful people who took strangers in from around the world. This book will move you to tears and astound you in ways you never thought possible. The spirit of kindness is alive and well in Gander, Newfoundland. I love the United States, but we could learn a thing or two from these wonderful in what to do in the event of a tragedy.
