Maxine is my hero..haha.......2000-12-28
First of all, I love Maxine. I give her cards for every occasion...well, most occasions that is. She is just so open, to the point...sort of like "open mouth insert foot", yet she does not care. I bought this book for my mother when my dad was in the hospital. I thought it would make her laugh & I was right. It really helped to take the tension off. I guess you have to appreciate Maxine for her "sour" attitude. She has a come back for every thing and in this doggie dog world it sometimes pays off to be a little like her.

Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-09-24
"Thank You so much for your book. It is an essential tool that every actor in Los Angeles MUST HAVE. You have graciously offered all the information in one place that would take an actor years to figure it all out on their own. THANK YOU.

An Actor's Black Book..........2006-12-30
I started reading this book thinking I could jot down a couple useful pieces of information and quickly advance to another book on acting. Boy was I wrong!
This book is overflowing with so many sources that you may as well toss out the Yellowpages. Judy Kerr did a flawless job of providing step-by-step instructions regarding the business-side of acting and how you can get started.
Sure, there are useful quotes from all kinds of big names and experienced veterans about the technique, but Judy was very wise to simply refer readers to all types of classes, coaches and workshops rather than attempt to write a book on how to act. Experience is the only way you truly learn, not by reading about others who experience it.
I'm currently saving up to take the 2-week trip to Los Angeles to research the city which is mentioned in the book with detailed stops to make.
If you're wondering whether or not this book should be on your bookshelf at home, buy it now. No, don't continue reading my review!! You're not listening and I feel disrespected. You could've been entering your shipping address and credit card info by now you lazy bum! Ya wanna act? Okay, your character is shopping for a book by Judy Kerr... ACTION!!!
Like having a professional adviser at home with you 24/7.......2006-12-26
There is no greater source book out there. For actors and other industry professionals, "Acting Is Everything" is a magnificent compendium of information covering all aspects of pursuing your acting career - from arriving in LA, to agents and managers, to your pictures - and it's wrapped up with motivational and inspiring advice. I have been recommending this book to not only actors but all entertainment professionals that I speak to including seminar attendees, my UCLA Extension students, and my own clients. Owning this book is like having a professional adviser at home with you 24/7.
An Awful Lot of Really Good Information.......2006-11-04
The back cover of this book has a very good summary of what its all about: 'Where to Go, Who to Call, What to Spend, What Not To Do!' Acting is a really hard business. The hints & tips, things that work & those that don't, will become well known to you after a time. But when you are new and trying to break into the biz the more of these things you know the more time you'll save.
One point she makes I'd do differently. She says that it's a good idea to participate in theater and theater groups. Truth, absolute truth. Unfortunately it's not that easy. In your home town, the little theaters needed and probably eventually used everyone who showed up for the auditions. In New York and LA, it's just about as hard to get into an 'amateur' production as it is a professional one. There are so many 'currently unemployed' who want to be on stage that it's difficult. Solution - start your own. Perform in your church, or the Y, or the back room of a restaurant. Just do it. As she says, you never know who will be in the audience.
Finally, the title of the book just about says it all -- Acting is Everything. Acting is not something that you want to do, it's something you have to do. Use the book as you can, but go for it.
Highly recommended!.......2006-09-06
Having already owned the hugely inspiring and knowledgable Acting is Everything book which helped me tremendously with my move to Los Angeles from Australia, I was delighted to see the latest "gold edition" which is just as wonderfully encouraging, informative and packed with even more knowledge. Anytime I was feeling lost in my career, this book renewed my faith.

Book Description
"This terrifying, remarkable work examines the attitudes, perceptions, and behavior of U.S. fighting men in the Pacific theater during World War II. Imaginatively drawing on letters, diaries, memoirs, military reports, and contemporary psychological assessments, Schrijvers reveals the social, historical, and emotional roots of the peculiarly frenzied and merciless war...this temperate study of murderous fury is among the most unsettling books I've read in years."
The Atlantic Monthly
"One of the most remarkable books I have ever come across. A significant and fascinating contribution to the field. The Crash of Ruin should appeal to a large audience of readers interested in World War II history."
--Edward M. Coffman, Author of The War to End All Wars: The American Military Experience in World War I
"The Crash of Ruin offers the reader both intellectual and emotional rewards. . . . Its narrative power makes it a wonderful read."
--Susan M. Hartmann, The Ohio State University
"A brilliant contribution to intercultural studies. It imaginatively combines the Â`new' military history with an older American Studies research and writing technique. Not only will the book attract a wide range of readers, it should also stimulate scholars to adopt this approach to many other topics in cultural studies."
--William R. Childs, Author of Trucking and the Public Interest
In the ruined Europe of World War II, American soldiers on the front lines had no eye for breathtaking vistas or romantic settings. The brutality of battle profoundly darkened their perceptions of the Old World. As the only means of international travel for the masses, the military exposed millions of Americans to a Europe in swift, catastrophic decline.
Drawing on soldiers' diaries, letters, poems, and songs, Peter Schrijvers offers a compelling account of the experiences of U.S. combat ground forces: their struggles with the European terrain and seasons, their confrontations with soldiers, and their often startling encounters with civilians. Schrijvers relays how the GIs became so desensitized and dehumanized that the sight of dead animals often evoked more compassion than the sight of enemy dead.
The Crash of Ruin concludes with a dramatic and moving account of the final Allied offensive into German-held territory and the soldiers' bearing witness to the ultimate symbol of Europe's descent into ruin--the death camps of the Holocaust.
The harrowing experiences of the GIs convinced them that Europe's collapse was not only the result of the war, but also the Old World's deep-seated political cynicism, economic stagnation, and cultural decadence. The soldiers came to believe that the plague of war formed an inseparable part of the Old World's decline and fall.

Not a "shoot 'em up"..........2007-09-25
...more of a sociology-type study. Provides very interesting insights into American GI experiences in WW2 Europe. Not always the conventional-wisdom approach, very nuanced and sometimes suprising in its treatment. Highly researched, has an academic feel to it, with many interesting "factoids" and statistics. Among many interesting analyses, one good example is the evolution of American attitudes about the German soldier and the German war machine in general from the North Africa phase to the Conquest phase of WW2. Solid book - not a page-turner in the usual battle sense, but interesting and highly informative.
A classic!.......2000-11-26
One of the most remarkable books on World War II I have ever come across. Belongs up there with Ambrose and Linderman. Up there even with Bell Irvin Wiley's classics on Johnny Reb and Billy Yank, America's Civil War soldiers.

Europe seen by American Soldiers.......2000-09-30
Peter Schrijvers' book is a wonderful one when as a reader or a scholar you are interested in intercultural studies or more generally in perception that one has of the other(s). Using an extensive aray of primary sources (diaries, letters, poems, songs, jokes, cartoons and memoirs) Peter Schrijvers allows any readers to enter the G.I.'s state of mind. Either intellectually or emotionally one has the possibility to see how Europe (its nature, weather, landscape, cities, town) and Europeans (whether Allies or Foes) were perceived by the G.I.'s during this period. But this book also is about another actor of this dark period, namely: War. Peter Schrijvers' book is a reminder on how powerfully War can shape someone's perception and how it surprisingly can blur G.I.s' vision of their surroundings. It is striking to see that American soldiers weren't really able to distinguish between a normal and an exceptional period of time in European life. War years seemed to be the reflection of a normal image of Europe and by reading Peter Schrijvers' book one might understand why it was perceived so.
Book Description
The Chinese are fond of using four-character phrases, known as cheng yu, to improve their writing style. The Chinese characters on the cover spell out one such idiom: pao zhuan yin yu. Translated literally, this would be "throw bricks attract jade." It can also express the idea of throwing out something of little value to induce a potential business partner to offer something more valuable. The authors of Turning Bricks into Jade, a more idiomatic rendering of pao zhuan yin yu, like to think of each critical incident in this collection as a brick, which, when combined with similar bricks, good sense and effort, can be used to construct relationships more valuable even than jade. A critical incident is a story about cross-cultural conflict or misunderstanding. Many of the forty-one incidents are based on actual events that involved one or more of the authors or their acquaintances. Some are a composite of several authors' experiences. You choose one of four or five possible alternatives that explain the misunderstanding. Following each incident is a discussion of possible solutions, based on the authors' experiences and grounded in current research. Misunderstandings between Chinese and American interactants are complicated; there is almost never just one thing going on. One result of this complexity is that many of the incidents have more than one correct explanation. Forty-one Americans and Chinese with considerable experience in both cultures read the collection of incidents for validation. As you work through the incidents, you may feel the need for a more detailed explanation or definition of certain recurring themes. A section on key theoretical concepts in Chinese-American interactions provides such detail. Included are individualism and collectivism, guanxi (interpersonal connections), hierarchies, gender relations in the workplace, regulations, deference to authority, work incentives and ownership. The Index of Incidents According to Themes and Concepts is also helpful.

A surprising book.......2000-10-06
This book surprised me. I am not inclined to read books about humans relating to birds or animals. Once I began to read Raising Susan, however, I became increasingly captived. It told an amazing story in a seamlessly detailed and dramatic way. With a man, a woman, and a golden eagle as its protagonists, the story is really a strange love story, filled with obstacles, breakthroughs, heartbreak, joy, and even violence, as the eagle attacks the man who seeks to be close to her. Read it and believe it.
An Astounding True Story.......2000-04-01
This is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable nature stories I have ever read; full of drama and even physical conflict as Susan, the abused golden eagle the Hyndmans brought to their avian santcuary, attacked Cecil Hyndman. Not once, but three times, almost blinding him in the most serious attack. Yet Susan showed she had a less fercious side, bonding so closely with Adele she was able to stroke and kiss the large eagle with an almost 8-foot wingspan. Susan responded with physical proof of her deep attachment to Adele by laying 17 eggs in captivity, some directly into Adele's hands -- the only female eagle to do so in captivity. The Hyndmans raised other large birds of prey at Featherland, including a female great horned owl that also laid 14 eggs. The Hyndmans were also famous for teaching many birds considered untrainable to speak. They were referred to as modern-day "Dr. Dolittles" -- an apt description. This book tells the intertwined and convoluted story of what must surely be one of the oddest love stories ever -- between a man, a woman and a golden eagle.
Raising Susan By Bill Burns.......2000-03-18
Bill Burns has done an exemplary job of capturing the interaction between Susan, a golden eagle with a five foot wing span, four inch claws and a brutal beak and Cecil and Adele Hyndman. Their challenging and intimate relationship with Susan took place over a twenty-five year period. The meticulous notes that Cecil kept of Susan the eagle and some three hundred other birds he cared for in Feartherland provide us with insight and understanding of birds not recorded elsewhere. It was Cecils dream to be recognized not as an untrained ameteur bird lover but rather as an authority on birds and their capacity to interact in amazing ways with humans.Burns has enabled Cecil to do this in relating what he learned about the golden eagle who shared such a major part of his life. If you love eagles this story will surprize and amaze you. Burns has written a very fine book.
