Book Description
Icons of the sea, pop culture seductresses, and mythical sirens-mermaids have been swimming in and out of our collective consciousness since the beginning of recorded time, and their images have graced folk-art pieces for centuries. Here's a gorgeous gift book about these legendary sea nymphs that gracefully combines full color art, including paintings, sculptures, and illustrations by Paul Gaugin and Gustav Klimt, with literary quotations and lore that span more than 2,000 years. Text includes selections from Ovid, Shakespeare, Goethe, Melville, and Poe, plus "The Little Mermaid" and "The Legend of Undine."

Dwight has to help out the ladies of Old Town with a problem.......2005-05-19
"The Big Fat Kill," Book 3 of Frank Miller's "Sin City" graphic novels once again focuses on the character of Dwight, who got himself a new face and a new attitude in the previous story, "A Dame to Kill For." The latter was the more important part, because Dwight did not come across as being anyway as interesting as Marv, the hero of the first "Sin City" story who is back to lend Dwight a helping hand in the second. Dwight is not exactly alone this time either, but he is certainly more capable of holding his own than previously.
Dwight is spending some time with Shellie the waitress when Jackie Boy shows up with a mean drunk and four of his friends. The old Dwight would have had some problems with that situation, but our hero has definitely grown up. Getting Jackie Boy to leave Shellie alone should be the end of it, but Dwight is convinced that the night will not end until Jackie Boy hurts somebody and Dwight takes the responsibility for making sure that does not happen. But when Jackie Boy ends up to Old Town where the ladies ply their trade of prostitution and are the law, "beautiful and merciless," it looks like Dwight's help is not need at all. This, however, turns out to be the biggest mistake of the night and suddenly Dwight's services are most decidedly needed.
It will seem strange to pick out this particular "Sin City" story and say it is a bit over the top, since obviously all of them are. The ending is certainly brutally efficient but at the cost of any notion of elegance, which is usually preferred in a comic noir story such as this. Miller is certainly not experimenting as much in terms of his artwork as he was in the first novel in the series, but the rough way in which Dwight and Jackie Boy's faces are drawn is not to my liking. The full-page panels in this one have Miller's best artwork. This includes Dwight introducing Jackie Boy to the toilet, Dwight jumping into his car, and some of the ladies of Old Town. Still, all things considered, this ends up being a second tier Miller story and Dwight is still a second tier hero, still well worth the reading but not as good as it gets in "Sin City."
This slip cased graphic novel brings together the five issues of the original Dark Horse comic series, along with their covers (which actually introduce some color to Miller's artwork). In the back of the book you will find a Gallery of "Sin City" art contributed by the likes of Arthur Adams, Sergio Aragones, Joe Kumbert, Mike Mignola, John Romita, Walter Simonson, and some other artists who present their interpretations of Nancy Callahan, the ladies of Old Town, and other "Sin City" characters.

Book Description
Films are a powerful medium for teaching students of psychology, social work, medicine, nursing, counselling and also literature or media studies about psychopathology.
The 15 core clinical chapters of Movies and Mental Illness thus each use a case history along with synopses and scenes from one or two specific, often well known films to explain and teach students about the most important disorders encountered in clinical practice. Helpful teaching tools such as suggestions for class discussions and key issues to consider while viewing films are provided throughout.
Now in an updated edition, with expanded coverage of sleep, eating, impulse control, and adjustment disorders, as well as sexual dysfunction and violence, this book has established a great reputation as an enjoyable and highly memorable supplementary teaching tool for abnormal psychology classes.
Written by experienced clinicians and teachers, who are themselves movie aficionados, Movies and Mental Illness is superb not just for psychology or media studies classes, but also for anyone interested in the portrayal of mental health issues in movies.
Reviews nearly 1,000 films illustrative of psychopathology!

Movies and Mental Illness: Using Films to Understand Psychotherapy.......2006-03-24
A really fine layman's guide to several prominent mental illnesses where specific films accurately portray manifestations of and reactions to those illnesses. It is now much more enjoyable to watch those films again with a better understanding of what the characters are attempting to portray. Highly recommended to any movie viewer who would like to know more about specific mental illnesses, but aren't able to attend psychiatric Grand Rounds as a physician.
Fascinating Movie Book.......2005-11-28
You may think Movies and Mental Illness is a book intended strictly for the mental health professionals and/or educators. Although I do not fall in either of these categories, I was enlightened by the wealth of knowledge offered by this book.
I felt the authors did a remarkable job educating us on mental disorders, the misconceptions associated with them, and the powerful effect film has on public perception of those with mental disorders.
Each chapter discusses a psychological disorder and includes several well-known films that portray each one. The authors showed us a fabricated case history of a lead character in the film with a particular disorder. Also included is the patient's psychological history, behavioral observations, diagnosis, treatment plan, and the prognosis. I found the tables and charts that were included throughout the book to be very helpful and user-friendly.
This book is a useful resource for everyone.
Psychopathology at the Movies.......2005-10-22
A good book covering a host of movies across time. Apart from one movie at the beginning of each chapter for a disorder category, not much diagnosis detail. Written by sound researchers in psychotherapy

Book Description
"This book contains a good mix of original research and theorizing with a comprehensive survey of the literature in the field. Its aim--to get us to rethink and reevaluate the positive and progressive contribution of female soap opera fans to women's culture and through that to the broader culture of late capitalism--runs clearly throughout the book and is gratifyingly well achieved. I expect the book will make a significant contribution to television studies, cultural studies, and women's studies. This is a good book that will make a significant, original, and provocative contribution to the field. I expect it to be widely read and cited."
--John
Fiske, University of Wisconsin-Madison
How can such an apparently trivial or even exploitative genre as soap opera be associated with empowerment for its viewers? The answer, states Mary Ellen Brown, is that soap operas create and support a social network in which talk becomes a form of resistive pleasure.
Undertaken as an ethnographic study in which the author is a member of the group, a fan, and also a researcher,
Soap Opera and Women's Talk demonstrates how the enjoyment of and engagement with soap operas create the opening for women to serve as wedges in the dominant culture. Brown explores how the hegemonic notions of femininity and womanhood are developed at one cultural site and how they can be accepted, resisted, and negotiated in the processes of consumption. This pivotal work on the relationships between feminism, cultural studies, and the media is essential reading for all students and scholars studying and working in these areas.

An informed and informative descriptive survey.......2004-01-14
The Royal Air Force In Texas: Training British Pilots In Terrell During World War II by Tom Killebrew is the fascinating and little known story of the first of six British flight training schools which were deliberately located in America for the express purpose of instructing Royal Air Force pilots during the years of the Second World War. These schools were necessary, for they trained new recruits away from the enemy attacks and poor weather conditions back in England. Yet they were not entirely safe; anything from collisions to running out of fuel could quickly claim the lives of these trainees. The Royal Air Force In Texas is an informed and informative descriptive survey into the militarily difficult times British military aviation history and a unique addition to the growing library of World War II histories.

Book Description
If you believe children should be seduced into warped sexual behavior by the Gay Elite, if you think confessed murderers should be set free by defense attorneys who know how to wield the race card, if you feel promiscuous gay men should be empowered to spread AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, don’t read this book.
But if you’ve always suspected that factions on the Left are trying to destroy the values that define our civilization, this book proves it. Through the pages of
The Death of Right and Wrong, author, activist, and pundit Tammy Bruce takes you inside the chilling world of the Left—a place where morals and decency have been turned on their heads and the crisp distinction between Right and Wrong has been blurred into a mushy, gray mess.
In this world, the Gay Elite exploit our children—under the guise of tolerance and education—to satisfy their sexual obsessions.
In this world, the Black Elite laud convicted murderers as community heroes and award-winning “artists.”
In this world, the Feminist Elite fawn over a woman who mercilessly killed all five of her children.
And much more that will offend your sense of decency and threaten your basic values.
Ms. Bruce smashes the facades of “Tolerance,” “Understanding,” and other Leftist slogans to reveal the ugly truth of their agenda. As a gay activist and former president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization of Women, she witnessed firsthand the Left’s attempts to undermine our millennia-old code of morals and values, aided by politically biased media and academia. And if the news headlines of today are any indication, they’re winning the culture war. Unless we act now, we are doomed at the hands of special interest groups on the Left who want nothing more than to undermine our ability to judge right from wrong in order to foist their own selfish, anything-goes society on the rest of us. This book reveals what they’re doing, how they’re doing it, and what we can do to restore decency in our society.
You’ll discover powerful tools in these pages to help you understand the psychology of the Left—what makes them tick and, more importantly, how to stop them from eroding our values completely. Full of controversial opinions and countless examples ripped from the headlines,
The Death of Right and Wrong is a powerful, eye-opening book that you won’t want to be without.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
1960s Hippies and Radicals have children.......2007-01-10
This book is a clear explanation of what happened after the Woodstock Summer of Love. Over the next 30 years, the Hippies, Radicals and Leftists infiltrated institutions of learning and the media. The goal was simple: to transform America into their image. A dysfunctional, sordid and sexually "free" society that had liberated itself from what many call traditional values. Now the Left, and all those who believe the same way, even if they don't realize they've been conditioned to believe it, want a nihilistic, value neutral culture. And they are producing movies, and television and radio programs to promote it. Without a book like this, where the author reveals that Americans are decent people, some people, especially the young, might get the idea that rap and its related culture, modern art and what they see on television and at the movies are somehow normal or average. All of it is not.
At the core is sex. Sex with anyone anywhere of every variety. The author, a former member of the National Organization of Women, tells how the organization has a "no position position" in regard to prostitution and pornography. And today, most of the problems in American society revolve around human sexuality, marriage, divorce, sex outside of marriage and abortion. It could be said that the Left is fostering the idea that if you have any problems in this area, dispose of it, whether it's a wife, husband, sex partner or unborn baby.
The author argues that the Left embraces victimhood as a driving force. All those who speak against what they believe and want must hate them. She also illustrates that many of these people come from scarred backgrounds and instead of healing, wish to be accepted as dysfunctional as they are, and want others to be as dysfunctional as themselves. I don't buy this premise in the sense that the struggles between right and wrong and those who wish to live their way in the midst of a majority that is not accepting of their lifestyle is ages old. But as in the title of the book, if right and wrong can be eliminated, then anarchy is the result. Children will be subjected to parents who change spouses or never marry or drift away or disappear, and these thing too, have happened before. The difference is that every media device is now spewing the instructions to how to live this vile way 24 hours a day.
Protect your children, don't get cable, limit the use of the internet and turn the filth on your radio off. Reground yourself in what you believe is right and wrong. Stay away from the "if it feels good, do it" crowd. Take some time away from a media that wants you to enjoy the vulgar, obscene, dysfunctional and profane. Live your life, don't give it up to the box.
I applaud the author in taking the time to get this book to the public.
Novel because author is lesbian........2006-12-28
This book contains little that is new to the true conservative. What is novel is that the author is a lesbian. Also, she was former President of Los Angeles NOW. Undoubtedly she was once very far left, but she found her cohorts in the left to be moving even further left than herself. What she saw and learned disgusted her. Once she got "healthy" (over her "malignant narcissism") she migrated to the right, at least in her social views. I am grateful for that, and found the book to be well written and cogent, nevertheless I found myself annoyed more than once, that she was saying nothing more than most conservatives have been saying for years. There is a hubris in the notion that somehow her status as lesbian gives her moral authority to speak on the wrongs of her peers. Apparently the only one who can "judge" is one of the defectives. If that argument holds than no man can sit in judgment on a criminal unless he himself is a criminal. I for one am white, Christian and heterosexual and I don't need the moniker of a deviant to be able to claim with moral force that sin is sin. Christ is the judge of all things, and from Him we get clarity on moral judgments. Those moral judgments are written in the Bible for all to see. And this goes to another problem with this book. Ms. Bruce goes to great lengths to keep Christianity at arms length, but from whence does she derive her estimations of right and wrong? She seems to imply that knowledge of right and wrong come from within. But that is nuts. Mao Tse-Tung consulted his sense of right and wrong and slaughtered 60 million of his own countrymen. No, truth emanates from one source, and His name is Christ.
One very important nugget that I did get from this book is Bruce's description of how the "damaged left" as she calls them, got to be damaged, and what that damage is. She calls them "malignant narcissists" who don't want to get well - they prefer to remain in victim mode, which is their power base. This insight, further elaborated in book was very helpful to me.
It's merely her opinion...........2006-09-01
I have not read her book-yet- but from the rewiews I've been reading, she is no different than Anne Coulter who also has her take on the left and no matter how much you read on books about liberals or conservatives, it never ends!! All these books do is get us upset and further alienates us from the real issue. Namely, that neither party has all the answers!
The problems we presently face in our world are way too complex, damm it!! And both parties make me sick to my stomach because neither one has the inner wisdom and the depth of knowledge needed in truly making a difference. We will never set the example to the world because Democrats and Republicans continue fighting over power, control and who knows better!! Hence we are bottlenecked by a political process that works at a snails pace. What also sickens me is that the American public is so far removed from knowing just how bad our political process really is!!
For example, while many may think of Noam Chomsky's ongoing and extensive criticism of US policy as just another opinion, the question I have is this: in all the years he has been writing and lecturing, to what degree is he speaking the truth? Why is it that our political leaders vehemently deny what he has to say? Is it because those who oppose him can't handle the truth? Let us assume for a moment that Chomsky (or any person who knows better) is indeed speaking many truths concerning war, injustice, inequality, and all the rest. Would it not be the DUTY of our politicians to seek out these truths with the attention they deserve? As I see it, we put them in office precisely for this reason!!
And why is it that we often hear of people who have greater depth in knowing the complexities of the world we live in, yet our politicians are unable to fathom it?
At any rate, while I'm sure that Tammy Bruce has provided many truths concerning liberals, judging them serves no purpose. I'd like to see her and Anne Coulter write a book on how to solve the many ills facing our country and the world at large.
A Confused Book.......2006-07-12
The author admits she is a lesbian who had an affair with a former actress, and admits that she is apart of the "left".
She admits that the left is morally corrupt, and that they excuse their behavior because they have been victims of abuse.
But she makes the following errors:
She demonstrates (and this is a bad example to follow) how she got over her lover's suicide, which was by guess what, seeing herself as a victim and hating her lover for committing suicide and pulling her into a sexual relationship when she was a child.
That is wrong because, teens are not children (and by the way the author states outright she thinks they are), she's playing a so called victim herself while rebuking the "Left" for playing victim. And since when do teens not get into sexual relationships willingly, approve of them (as do their parents and the rest of the 18+ adult world with the exception of some Christians.) So why the hate towards those older than 18 or 19 for engaging in a relationship with a teen? I'm not saying that no one is a victim by the way, just that the author is contradicting herself in some areas.
She fails to see the problem that is perpetuating this moral relativism as she calls it, and perpetuates it herself in a major way: she endorses the relativist Constitution of the U.S.A.
The Constitution is heavily inflienced by the Bible, but itself is also based on the opinions of men. So she takes us back to square problem one.
I'd recommend buying this book for a solid Christian, because it is good evidence that Romans 1 is right when it says that people in Tammy's position have no excuse (she shows well in her book she can see the hypocrisy of the world), because they can see right from wrong, but choose to obscure it. Hopefully, Tammy is not on her way to obscuring the truth even more but accepting it fully.
The most important book I read this year.......2005-10-31
I do not agree with Tammy on some very important issues - especially her pro-choice position. I do think that this book is a must read however. It will make you angry and it will depress you, and maybe it will make you want to do something to stop this spiral into "anything goes." When she points out that we in this country can smile when a Christian icon like the Virgin Mary is portrayed with vaginas all around her and human feces plastered upon her even while we "faint in horror" that someone might flush a Koran down a toilet we can begin to see just how much hatred there is for our country among our citizenry. When a left-wing child psychologist writes that adult males having sex with children is in fact a good thing for both partners or we hear that priests are known to be sex compulsives and it is said to be their privacy right that should be guaranteed, we begin to see just how close we are to true moral depravation. Unlike so many propagandists today Tammy does not just make up facts to support her charges but documents each and every one. If you read just one book this year, this is the one you should read.

Book Description
Despite severe diabetes, Russell Ogg was a successful photographer who traveled worldwide with his wife, journalist Norma Lee Browning. He's always been able to cope with anything, but when diabetes began to rob him of his sight, "it was like a violinist losing his fingers."
When Norma Lee saw him sitting day after day on the patio of their home in Palm Springs, slumped in despair, his sightless eyes fixed on nothing, she too became depressed. But a miracle was about to happen.
Then suddenly a red hummingbird appeared that changed their lives.
Norma Lee frankly describes her doubts and the errors she made in identifying the birds her husband tried to photograph. She also concludes, from her close observation of the hummers, that "the experts" are wrong on many counts.
But the miracle that provides the heart-warming conclusion to this unusual story involves Russell Ogg's eyesight. His sight improved. His eye doctor said he saw better than it was possible for him to see. "There is no way to explain medically how he does it .. his photographs tell us something about the magnificence of man."
His inspiring story is a testament to human courage and hope.
Customer Reviews:
He Saw a Hummingbird.......2001-04-09
This is one of the most inspirational and heartwarming stories I have read in a long time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is experiencing difficulties physically and emotionally as it is uplifting and such an encouragement! Russell's ability to overcome this tremendously difficult period in his life is remarkable. I only wish there was a sequel to the book as I would love to know more about his photography and the aftermath of his success. The book is a light hearted approach to a most serious situation allowing the reader to appreciate and value man's will to survive. The author, his wife, has a wonderful sense of humor and evoked curiousity and wonder for the tiniest of birds... the hummingbird! I highly recommend the book to children and adults alike who desire to learn the success of determination!
