Book Description
Milton Avery's late paintings, done between 1947 and 1963, stand at the nexus of figurative modernism and Abstract Expressionism. Frequently viewed as the last of the American figurative painters, Avery, in this book's reassessment, provides a key to understanding the artists of the second half of the American century.
This volume accompanies the only exhibition of Avery's art since the popular 1982 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art; it is the first book on Avery in over a decade. A 1958 essay by the seminal critic Clement Greenberg provides a valuable period context, while the new text by Robert Hobbs makes an insightful connection between Avery's painting and the lyrical modernism of Wallace Stevens's poetry, which will intrigue lovers of American poetry as well as American art.
Customer Reviews:
Milton Avery.......2005-09-21
Pictures reveal an interesting approach, quite different than predecessors with its flat shapes and distinctive coloration. The text, however, remains a pedantic driven piece of trivization of analyses upon analyses that resemble nothing more than a laborious exercise of an overinflatted academic egotism lacking, for the most part, informative substance.
A Great American Artist.......2003-04-26
Anyone who has seen Milton Avery's work knows why he is called the American Matisse. He still has an American flair in his color choice and extra simplicity. This book is an important addition to any art history library. Professor Hobbs did the world a great service in documenting the life and work of Avery,
who is becoming more and more well known following his death. There are many color pictures throughout the book.

Book Description
To create the amazing worlds of wonder that seem to flow from the brush of Keith Parkinson, voluminous notes and sketches must be made in order to give life to the final work. Within those sketches are pieces of the painting's, as well as the artist's, soul. Keith's work for TSR and "Guardians" are well documented.
Customer Reviews:
Spellbinding.......2005-11-01
It is wonderful to see the less refined work of Keith's as well as the finished paintings. This collection is quite impressive and will leave you wanting more. Sadly, with Keith's recent passing, there will be no more.
I highly recommend this and his more complete artbook, Kingsgate.
Excellent.......2003-08-07
Excellent, excellent and excellent. Only problem is that URL in the back of the book to where you can go to purchase prints leads you to Parkinson's Website where you find that he no longer is selling the prints and with no alternative to where one could go. His work is spellbinding, it is a shame one cannot buy prints of his work anymore. I hope that situation will change soon. Anyway, that is why I removed one star.
[Update: March 2006]: Sadly, Mr. Parkinson died Oct 2005 from a long battle with Leukemia. We have lost a great talent. The URL at the back of the book will lead you to his Web site, which is operational (except, for the present, the store section). In an email exchange with his widow, she said that in the near future they hope to have the store back up on the Web, were people can buy prints of his spellbinding work.
So if you are a fan, please keep his family in your prayers, and keep checking back to his Web site. [too bad Amazon won't let me change my 4 star rating for this book to a 5 star rating, which is what it really deserves.]

Book Description
Now 20 years old, Jim Henson's classic fantasy film The Dark Crystal--featuring the breathtaking concept design of renowned fantasy artist Brian Froud--is a soaring work of the imagination. This mystical adventure has such a huge cult following that when the film was recently re-released on video and DVD, it quickly sold a million copies. Just as remarkable is the cult status of The World of The Dark Crystal, Froud's book on the film. Originally published in 1982 and long out of print, this definitive volume--packed with brilliant artwork--has been in such demand that used copies can sell for well over $400.
Abrams is now proudly reissuing this sought-after book in a brand new collector's edition. This beautifully printed reproduction of the original volume contains all of its stunning art and text--plus a new essay by Froud, illustrated with never-before-published paintings, drawings, and sculptures from the film's archives. And this new edition features a facsimile of a 20-page booklet Froud and Henson created to present the film to backers--a gorgeous overview of the story so rare only a few copies are known to exist. This collector's edition of The World of The Dark Crystal, like the re-released film, will truly be a must-have for Henson and Froud fans.

Absolutely awesome.......2007-08-16
This reedition was long awaited and now I see it's simply delightful. Detailed presentation, awesome drawing and descriptions, it speaks for itself it's been compiled and conceived with an exquisite taste. It includes some extra copies from original designs in fine paper into some kind of envelope. This book is a must for everyone who loves "The Dark Crystal" and wants to know beyond and before... I do love this book.
Love this Book.......2007-03-09
I have loved this movie since I was a child and this book brings a new dimension to it. It is whimsical and informative. I keep it out on my coffee table for all to see.
Detailed and Informative.......2007-02-24
If you`ve just discovered "Dark Crystal" or if your already a serious fan then this book is a must have item. And also just a quick mention on the same subject interest for the "Dark Crystal" will increase shortly because in production as I write this the creator of "Samurai Jack" and "Clone Wars" Genndy Tartakovsky is woking on "The Power of the Dark Cystal" slated for 2008. Can`t wait.
Gorgeous book.......2007-01-30
I love the artwork of Brian Froud and have for years. The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are two of my most favourite movies. I own several of Froud's other books, including Good Faeries/Bad Faeries. The World of the Dark Crystal is just as beautiful as any of his other works. It's absolutely mesmerizing. The thought put in to the history of this world is amazing, although some of the text can be a bit long winded, it's nevertheless an enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Froud's artwork and/or the Dark Crystal.
Re-Print is blurier than the original 1982 print :-( .......2006-09-11
First the good: There is a new 4 page introduction by Brian Froud, with an excellent reprint of the MAKING OF THE DARK CRYSTAL Book cover and an excellent photograph of Jen and Kira in the woods. I've never seen that photo before, but it's very beautifull. I wissh they could make a book with all those unreleased photographs. The Text here is very informative and an excellent read.
There is also a promo brochure reprint included THE CRYSTAL. I don't have the first release but to me the printing quality is very good and it really looks like an original piece from 1982.
Now the bad: The other parts of the book are just a reprint of the old book. There is no new material and some of the text has been newly typographed. The bad thing about it is they just scanned the original book, so the printing quality is of a lesser quality here. Also a bit of the borders are mising due to this technique.
So, if you want true quality get the 1982 printing.
But DC fans like me will get both books anyway.
Book Description
Learn to improvise freely over any chord progression! The "Fourth Note" principle is a truly remarkable method for improvising in jazz and other genres, combining ear training, theory and technique to enable students to play with unrestricted creativity. In this book/CD pack, master guitarist Tony DeCaprio shows how to incorporate this technique using "focus notes" to anchor your playing within a chord progression through comprehensive, step-by-step instruction with examples for practical application of every new concept. The accompanying CD includes 99 full-demo tracks. "A totally unique and revolutionary concept for teaching improvisation. There is nothing even remotely similar on the market. The approach is refreshing and brilliant. I highly recommend this book to both students and teachers." - Jimmy Bruno
Customer Reviews:
Mesmerizing, keeps drawing me back.......2006-09-01
This book is hard to get hold of. It would probably be most useful as a teaching tool in the hands of a good teacher. I can't say that it has yet improved my playing, though maybe it has.
It's purpose is to teach us to play freely while moving towards goal notes. It contrasts with, but also supplements and maybe comprehends, those methods that teach you to 'know where every note is', as for example the marvellous 'Jazz Guitar Structures' by Andrew Green.
Where most texts like Mr. Green's demand great intellectual development (I guess that's intellect called for, certainly a powerful acuity), by forcing you to always know precisely where you are in relation to the underlying chord, Mr DeCaprio's book helps you find your way to solid notes (examples starting with the 3rd and 7th), so that you can move carelessly in reaching those notes, and thus let your hands 'find their own way'.
I find 'Gateway' a guide to something very similar to good conversation... you've got to know the point you want to make, then just let your mouth take you there. If you planned everything you intended to say, you would be dull (unless you're a gifted actor); good conversation requires freshness of speech; you've got to suprise and gratify yourself if you expect to please anyone else.
I don't mean at all to suggest that Mr. Green's method (or any other method that requires the development of a great knowledge of where you are on the fretboard) will not lead to the same freedom; but that there is something natural in Mr DeCarpio's method that is almost aggravating in it's simple demand: end up somewhere right.
I can sometimes play movingly, but most times I intersperse terrible notes that cause me to lose my way. This book says: know someplace good to land, and then get there (with a metronome, in exactly four notes, for training), and if you keep doing that you will find expressive and personal (and, effectively, errorless) ways to get there.
I'd add something that Jon Herrington (touring again with Steely Dan) said on his web site: listen with open ears and play with an open heart.
Gateway will help you get there; but it is mysterious.
Totally unique. Totally confusing. .......2006-08-02
This is the most confusing book on jazz guitar improvisation I've ever come across. It defies all other common approaches and uses the author's idiosyncratic approach. A guitarist of Jimmy Bruno's caliber might find this interesting, but the rest of us aren't going to find a "gateway" but a confusing maze that wanders everywhere.
The examples don't show chord progressions from jazz standards and give the reader helpful suggestions for soloing over the chords. It's a book of mainly practice exercises. They require extreme patience as they tend to be very long and extended examples that will make applying any of the material in your playing next to impossible.
If you're already better than Jimmy Bruno and need the only thing left in the world to challenge you, get this book. If you're looking for a "gateway" to improvisation, get the Berklee Improvisation books instead. I think if the author wants to present this material to the masses, an accompanying DVD of the author demonstrating the "fourth note" approach will be the only chance of having success with this unorthodox approach to jazz guitar improvising.

Book Description
Researched and written by a collaborative team of Americans and Russians, Marriages in Russia explores the myths and realities of how the first years of market transformation have affected Russian family life. The research project, in which 2418 individual interviews of randomly sampled heterosexual couples are used, was initiated to determine if the relationships between gender attitudes and the relative social statuses of spouses--based on such factors as education, occupational prestige, and income--influence the marital quality spouses experience. Whether these variables are linked to domestic violence, as data show they are in the United States, is also examined. The results are surprising in that they often contradict general beliefs about Russian gender attitudes and gender attributes, and the analysis of these findings is ultimately a fascinating look at the post-Cold War realities of family life in Russia.

Warfare In Feudal Europe 730-1200
John Beeler

Customer Reviews:
Warfare in Non-Feudal Europe.......2000-08-23
A good general history of the period, but focusing mainly on the later centuries. Covers the collective history of France, the German kingdoms, Britain, Spain, Syria, and Italy.
Although the author points out that it is a history of "feudal" Europe, he seems to focus on how much wasn't feudal in the period. It seems as if not one chapter goes by where he doesn't mention the fact that the system in place was similar to feudalism, but was in fact not it.
There is also constant mention of how many of the facts of the period can go unverified, and how it is impossible to determine the exact numbers in battles, seiges, etc. I understand the fact and it's valid, but brining it up every dozen pages does get a bit old.
All in all, I think it was a good book for someone interested in a general history of the different feudal and pseudo-feudal systems on Europe during 700-1200AD. It also contains interesting bits of military and political history alongside it, which is very appealing.
Good Introduction, but not much depth.......2000-04-28
This not the great and definititve work on feudal warfare, nor does it claim to be- but rather a general overview of the period and how feudal warfare evolved in different regions of Europe and Mediterrenean. Unfortunately, the author often notes an event, fact, or happening-but declines to provide greater detail or some of the underlying analysis. But if you want to get the basics, and have your appetite wetted for the real dope on warfare and military history of that period-start reading and be prepared to pick up several more volumes from various authors once you are done.
A useful and readable introduction........1998-08-28
While somewhat dated, Beeler's book is a handy introduction to the medieval art of war. The main drawback to this book is an emphasis on English and French practice and campaigns, though this problem is not unique to Beeler. Not as detailed as Contamine's "War in the Middle Ages," though much more readable.
Book Description
Internationally acclaimed novelist Amos Oz grew up in war-torn Jerusalem, where as a boy he witnessed firsthand the poisonous consequences of fanaticism. In two concise, powerful essays, the award-winning author offers unique insight into the true nature of fanaticism and proposes a reasoned and respectful approach to resolving the Israeli Palestinian conflict. As an added feature, he comments on contemporary issues--the Gaza pullout, Yasser Arafat's death, and the war in Iraq--in an extended interview at the end of the book.
Oz argues that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not a war of religion or cultures or traditions, but rather a real estate dispute--one that will be resolved not by greater understanding, but by painful compromise. As he writes, "The seeds of fanaticism always lie in uncompromising righteousness, the plague of many centuries."
The brilliant clarity of these essays, coupled with Oz's ironic sense of humor in illuminating the serious, breathes new life into this centuries-old debate. He emphasizes the importance of imagination in learning to define and respect other's space, and analyzes the twisted historical roots that have led to Middle East violence. In his interview, Oz sends a message to Americans. Why not, he proposes, advocate for a twenty-first-century equivalent of the Marshall Plan aimed at preventing poverty and despair in the region? "What is necessary is to work on the ground, for example, building homes for hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees who have been rotting in camps for almost sixty years now."
Fresh, insightful, and inspiring, How to Cure a Fanatic brings a new voice of sanity to the cacophony on Israeli-Palestinian relations--a voice no one can afford to ignore.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughts on Oz.......2006-11-04
This is a short book, but what it lacks in length it more then makes up with in the depth of the story. Oz's writings examines the problems in the Middle East, without getting into an scapegoating. He is focused on identifying what is wrong and what needs to be done. He does not suggest any re-drawing of maps, or other policies but the need to imagine.... and to understand that you must read the book.
There is more in heaven and earth. Mr. Oz, than is dreamnt of in your prophecies .......2006-04-17
Amos Oz, is in my judgment, one of the greatest contemporary writers. His memoir " A Tale of Love and Darkness" is a literary classic of tremendous power.
However Oz is also a 'political prophet'. And often holds forth in a way as if to suggest he feels himself taking upon himself the mantle of his Biblical namesake. Here he should perhaps have been a bit more cautious and remembered the Jewish teaching that in our time 'prophecy' is given to 'children' and ' fools'.
In this small gathering of small works Oz reiterates his well- known analysis of the Israeli- Arab conflict. It is as he understands it a 'dispute over land' between two peoples each of whom has a legitimate claim. The fanatics on one side( A fanatic in Oz's term is one for whom every means even the most bloody justifies the end) are those who say ' all is mine, and nothing is the others'. The reasonable people of which Oz is as he understands it preeminently one( though he makes it clear he too was raised as a little fanatic in pre- Jewish state 'Palestine') understand that there has to be a painful, reasonable compromise. The end of fanaticism is as he understands it the end of the Arab- Israeli conflict. A divided Holy Land, two states, one predominantly Jewish, and one Arab.
This analysis is of course not simply Oz's but has been the analysis of the moderate left in Israel, a good share of Western European Governments, and successive U.S. administrations. It now is the 'dream' of the vast majority of Israelis. It is on the basis of this analysis that US diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East has been conducted for more than half - a - century.
The problem however is that the analysis is drawn along too broad, too symmetrical and at the same time too limited lines. It is not right to say that the conflict is 'primarily' about land. Such a position was more credible three decades ago, but today given the rise of a worldwide pan-Islamic movement , it misses the mark.
The truth is that what Oz calls 'fanatics' are the great majority on the Islamic Palestinian side. ( He denies this, but the recent 'Hamas' victory in the Palestinian elections suggests he is once again ' sweeting' Palestinian positions) . The fact is that there is no symmetry between the ' fanaticism' of the Islamic world and the alleged 'fanaticism' of the Jews even those Oz calls ' settlers'. There is no Jewish Literature no settler Literature calling for the extermination of Palestinians, as there is daily Palestinian and Arab propaganda calling for the murder and elimination of Jews. There has never been deliberate Israeli effort at murdering Palestinian civilians, while murdering of Israeli civilians is a generally accepted Palestinian tactic.
Oz misleads and presents a false picture in harping on an alleged an unreal symmetry between Israelis and Palestinians.
One question of course is why he would want to do this? One answer is very simply that the kind of answer he gives makes a reasonable solution possible. Another answer is that it of course puts him above , makes him the good guy with the Europeans the Americans the Nobel Prize Committee , everyone else who would like to see the conflict resolved in this way.
Perhaps what I have just said is unfair, though Oz's tendency to preach his own views becomes increasingly irritating as they diverge with the years from the 'reality on the ground'.
Had Oz' had a bit more honesty he would have given up certain familiar 'socialist egalitarian 'mantras of his youth- and understood that there is a tremendous assymetry between the Jewish Israeli position and the Islamic Palestinian one. He would have had the honesty to understand that one very vast civilization, the Islamic, has a set of problems , which are endangering other human beings throughout the world. One such leader of that civilization , a leader who considers himself the great protector of the Palestinians, Mohammed Ahmadinejad has been continually threatening to wipe 'Israel ' from the map.
Perhaps Oz's analysis on ' fanaticism' would have been more convincing had it focused on Mr.Ahmadinejad and his ilk.
i.e. Willy- nilly whether it likes it or not , Oz's country Israel is involved in the conflict of those who champion freedom and democracy against those Totalitarian- Terrorist- Islamic Regimes which would make the 'Koran' our sole bed-time reading.
A great deal of wisdom in a very small package........2006-03-05
I usually do not find books written by Israelis or Palestinians about past or present events in the land whose very name is a matter of perspective and politics to be very interesting or enlightening. The authors usually either have an agenda or are engaging in pure propaganda. This book (along with David Grossman's "Death as a Way of Life") is a rare exception.
In lucid, eloquent and sensitive language, Oz presents the situation and the necessary cures not for Israelis, not for Palestinians, but for human beings. If you do not like this book, you are probably a fanatic, and not subject to logical persuasion.
Poor packaging for great content.......2006-02-22
Amos Oz is plain-spoken, lucid, brilliant. But Princeton UP did a disappointing job with the production of the book. The 2 essays and 1 interview that make up this book are short, and you can't change that. But what kept them from using larger paper? With exactly the same type-setting but wider margins, we would have gotten a beautiful small book. Instead, it looks like one of those over-priced mini books of bad poetry.
An Important and Excellent Read.......2006-02-16
Two very short, thoughtful essays and an interview on the conflict between the State of Israel and the (inevitable)Palatinian State; it is about real estate (and economics) stupid; read it and, then, join the Order of the Teaspoon.
