Book Description
A lifelong love of art is one of the greatest gifts an adult can bestow on a child-and no period of art is better loved or more available to children than Impressionism. Monet and the Impressionists for Kids invites children to delight in Cassatt's mothers and children, Renoir's dancing couples, and Gaugin's island scenes; 21 activities explore Monet's quick shimmering brush strokes, Cezanne's brilliant rectangles of color, Seurat's pointillism, and Degas's sculpture-like circles of dancers. Kids will learn how the artists' friendships sustained them through repeated rejection by the Parisian art world, and how they lived, painted, and thrilled to the vibrant life of Paris at the approach of the 20th century. A resource section guides readers to important museums and Web sites around the world.
Customer Reviews:
A superb art activity book about the Impressionists for kids.......2003-03-13
The invention of photograph had a profound impact on painting. At the start of the 19th-century the goal of painting was realism, but with a camera that became a moot point. Eventually the art world decided the only rational thing to do was to go in the opposite direction and to find an alternative to reality. The Impressionists represent the first successful movement by paintings to capture the public imagination with "non-realistic" art. "Monet and the Impressionists for Kids" not only introduces young readers to Impressionism but also follows up with 21 activities that will allow them to try their hand at painting. These activities are what makes Carol Sabbeth's book stand out from others on the Impressionists in general and Claude Monet in particular, because it is pretty much impossible to be exposed to these paintings and not want to try to do it yourself.
The book is divided into two halves. Part I: The Impressionists introduces readers to "A New Way of Looking at the World" and then devotes sections to the life and art of Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Mary Cassatt. Monet is clearly the star of the book (he certainly defines Impressionism for me), and there are five activities devoted to his section. Part II: The Post-Impressionists looks at the painters Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Surat, with a final section devoted to "Lasting Impressions."
Sabbeth provides a concise biography for each of the artists, with reproductions of their most famous and important works, along with an Art Detective section that tells you how to spot their work in terms of distinguishing characteristics. Most of the activities are specifically tied to the paintings. Off of Monet's "Regattas at Argenteuil" we learn about Painting Reflections; from the cloisonnism of Gauguin we experiment by making a Cup of Gauguin. These activities explore the uniqueness of these painters, from Cezanneýs brilliant rectangles of color to the sculpture-like circles of dancers by Degas. Some of these activities are truly creative, such as constructing your own little Monet haystack to appreciate the colors and light at different times of day. I especially liked the one for Seurat Sugar Cookies, where you make your cookies sugar-sprinkled masterpieces using the artist's pointillist technique.
I totally agree with the premise of this book, that there is no art form more appealing to children than Impressionism. If you are not a "real" Art Teacher (a distinct possibility in the wonderful new world of educational budget cuts) you will find "Monet and the Impressionists for Kids" both informative and instructional. Not only can you introduce children to the ballet dancers of Degas and the island scenes of Gauguin, but you can also find several activities for your students to do in class or at home. This is a very enjoyable and practical look at the great Impressionist painters. This book is for ages 9 and up, which is great because I qualify as being up.
monet and the impressionists for kids.......2003-03-03
This is a wonderful book with great ideas to do with kids so that they can get an understanding of the arts through hands on experiences.
As entertaining as it is educational........2002-03-29
Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is a book filled with 21 fun and educational activities to teach young people more about the classical painter Claude Monet and others in the grand and beautiful tradition of Impressionist art. Gorgeously illustrated in full color, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids features such activities as using colored construction paper to paint reflections, or painting the shimmering sky with watercolors. A wonderful biography and history, as well as a highly educational rainy-day fun book, Monet And The Impressionists For Kids is as entertaining as it is educational and highly recommended for home schooling and classroom curriculum supplementation.

Book Description
Way back in the korn fields a little ear of corn was heard to say to another little ear: "Where did we come from?" The solumn reply: "The stalk brought us." **** Way, way back in the korn fields a brood of skunks was hemmed in by a pack of hound dogs. The mother turned to her offspring and said, "Children, let us spray." **** Way, Way, way back in the korn fields one flea said to another, "Shall we walk or take a dog?" ****** Arranged by topic and numbered for your convenience, this book is chock full of jokes guaranteed to "make Grandpa laugh without making Grandma blush". Author Jim Hefley, known for his fascinating series of "Way Back" adventures about life in the Ozark Mountains of the early 20th century, compiled these jokes from legends and people in that special region where he grew up. Revised and put into a larger format, this second edition (first edition was dated 1994) contniues the tradition that Jim Hefley made famous.

Paco Pena Toques Flamencos.......2007-09-13
One of my best books with flamenco-tunes. It is for the advanced player but all tunes are concert pieces and sound great
Paco Pena: Toques Flamencos.......2007-03-22
Dieses Buch ist ein wunderbares Lehrbuch zum Erlernen der Flamenco Gitarre. Gitarren Grundkenntnisse sollten jedoch vorhanden sein.
Perfect!.......2007-01-10
I bought this as a gift for my brother-in-law who is an accomplished guitarist wanting to play this kind of music. He loved it, particularly because it also includes a CD of ther music. Not for beginners, though!
Better than Nothing.......2005-06-11
While this book isn't going to really change anyone's life, it does have a lot of simplified Ramon Montoya falsetas. It is a legitimate source of Flamenco material, the old way.
The compas patterns are now obsolete as are most PIP falsetas.
If you can find a teacher who can show you the upgraded rhythms you will sound flamenco playing this material, however you will never be mistaken for Paco De Lucia.
I use this book as a source for my students along with the modernized materials from encuentro productions.
get your fingers ready.......2004-03-21
This book literally changed my life! I once was an accomplished guitar hack, now i'm a student. To play the songs in this book you will have to get back to basics and learn some fundamental skills such as rasquedo, tremolo, more advanced finger picking patterns, picado, etc. Your right hand technique will flourish. This book is more advanced than most 'systems'. The songs are very nice traditional pieces and the transcription is excellent. Every nuance is there. Also, you must buy it with the CD. A teacher would also be useful to make sure your technique is correct. Happy playing!

Customer Reviews:
Get Book with CD instead.......2003-11-16
I bought the Toques Flamencos book at a store not realizing at the time it is also available in a set with CD for only $5 more. Then found the only way to get the CD (which the book recommends and refers to) was to buy the set, meaning purchasing the book twice. I agree it's a good beginner/intermediate book presenting an introduction to the varied flamenco styles, but the pieces are not really performance caliber outside of a student recital setting. Paco Pena does state in the introduction that was his intention, but if you're like me you don't like putting a lot of time and effort learning music you can't use professionally. A flamenco audience would expect a bit more embellishment(ie. flash, speed, elaborate runs, etc.), than is given in these arrangments.
The real thing.......2000-07-28
Paco Pena is the real thing-a seasoned guitar accompanist and solo flamenco performer. It is rare for a player of his calibre in flamenco to write pieces within the range of average players; but these pieces are cool enough to play for any audience and ambitious guitarists will find plenty here to challenge their technique and musicianship. There is and introduction that explains the special tablature and flamenco rhythms. Make sure you are getting the cassette recording of Paco playing the pieces, otherwise you may not get the proper sound. I collect everything flamenco, but this is THE textbook for the intermediate flamenco guitarist.
A must for the ambitious student.......2000-04-03
I finally got my hands on this book - and it was well worth the wait. The book is a huge inspiration and if you get the cassette that accompanies it you're in for a treat: Theres so much genuine flamenco in these pages! I know a guy who quit the Music Conservatory to go to Spain and look up Paco Pena! -And he actually gave him a couple of lessons! If you're not that devoted (and Paco probably don't give lessons to just anyone these days), this book will do almost just as well!

Previous Reviews Seem a Bit Biased, no?.......2005-09-28
As a solid historical synthesis and commentary, this book should be judged based on what it sought to be: a concise synthesis of the history of SpecOps, with a focus on the significance of SpecOps for the Cold War. The synthesis was intended to be timely and accessible to popular audiences, useful to policymakers who were not specialists in the field, but wanted to have a birds-eye view, but also not too controversial to the modal perspective among specialists. This last agenda is of course the hardest to achieve, because Military Science and Military History are rich with pet-theory-mongers, special-interest storytellers, and revisionists with an agenda. In my opinion, the book succeeds in its first two missions. As I am not a Military Scholar specialist, I can only surmise based on the tone of some of the reviewers that Adams has managed to inflame the indignation of at least some extremes along the continuum of theorists and pundits.
One of the previous reviewers seems to have gathered the take-home message that "the West was the cause of the suffering" during the Cold War!?! Did you actually READ the book?
The third reviewer appears to have had his ego-bruised by Adams recounting of the many mistakes resulting from very deeply-ingrained structural, organizational, and cultural inflexibilities in the US military, and lack of harmony in SpecOps-Conventional relations/competition in particular.
If there is one thing military men are even more keen to fight over than territory-in-war, it is authority and funding from their respective governments, especially during times of relative peace. It is one thing to be "for your side," and ideally a totally separate thing to be "critical of your sides mistakes." We only avoid repeating the mistakes of history by being as objective about it as we can be.
As the book progresses, Adams marshals a strong argument that Spetsnaz had a better track record of successful operations, that SAS was also at times quite effective, but that US SpecOps up to that date had been neglected, misused, misunderstood, poorly supported, and poorly integrated into the US Military Command Structure and dogma. Adams simply synthesized the broader historical background for this empirical generalization at a time when it was a very hot topic. No doubt, even if these generalizations are factual, they are now HIGHLY dated. But after all, that is the point of history.
I'm about half way through the book and I haven't encountered any reference that are so invidious as SAS="B Grade" Spetsnaz="A Grade" etc. Adams does indeed tell in concise detail about some of the key successes and failures of the SpecOps groups of each nation. I have not encountered anything language that I'd deem "contemptuous" toward the valor, the committment or the good-intentions of any branch of the US military. The only thing about which he seems remotely contemptuous is his discussion of totalitarian, ruthless East-Bloc policies and actions, to which he was clearly opposed. He points out quite aptly that, it is far easier for a totalitarian state to be effective at covert warfare.
I find his coverage to be nicely balanced b/w synthesis and detail, and while neither congratulatory of either East nor West, he is also not deluded by his obviously "pro-Western" sentiments. The prose is flowing, informative and concise without being opinionated. It reads easily. The book will be of interest to a wide-range of military historians, political historians, and enthusiasts.
Jingoist pro-Americans looking for a pro-Democracy pep-talk ala "Rocky IV," as well indignant socialists seeking additional strands for the latest anti-Western conspiracy theory will probably find the book to be a disappointment.
an enlightning rewiew of covert operations by evil empires.......1999-03-22
Recommended reading for those looking for the truth regarding the undercover war between the East and West from WW2. Hostages, terror attacks, invasions, and counter insurgancy by Delta Force, SAS, and Spetsnaz are covered in fine detail; the overzealous tactics by the Reagan administration (involvement in Grenada, Contas, Vietnam, Iran/Iraq war, Angola), in achieving their selfish goals still leaves a sour taste in this reviewers mouth; yet again this book proves that the USA's world babysitter mentality, has caused more misery in the world than has stopped. An eye-opener, although with end of Cold War- rather dated commentary today.
Barely Finished This One!.......1999-01-04
While this book claimed to provide the inside story of the world's elite special forces, all it really did was highlite past missions. Between beraiding the US capabilities and predicting WWIII, Adams never really gives us any story that wasn't in the paper. Anyway, try the Commandos by Douglas Waller if you want a good account of US elite fighters.
Book Description
In this latest collection of his highly provocative essays, Thomas Sowell once again demonstrates why he is one of the most thoughtful, readable, and controversial thinkers of our time. With his usual unrelenting candor, he cuts through the stereotypes, popular mythology, and what he calls the "mush" surrounding the critical issues facing the American social, economic, political, legal, racial, and education scenes. Sowell's hard-hitting, and ruthlessly honest, views include his commentary on
-
Affirmative Action "No dogma has taken a deeper hold with less evidenceor in the face of more massive evidence to the contrary."
-
Cultural Bias "Life is culturally biased. . . . As limited human beings, we must make our choices among the alternatives actually available. A culture-free society has never been one of those alternatives."
-
The Media "The public apparently has no 'right to know' that the politically correct conclusions they keep hearing may not be factually correct."
-
Immigration "The fact that immigrants were once valuable additions to the country does not mean that the same thing may be arbitrarily assumed today, any more than the fact that horses and buggies were once the best way to get around means that we should rely on them today."
-
The Minimum Wage "What is the minimum wage law but an unfunded mandate imposed on private organizations? It is like impulse buying and charging it to somebody else's credit card."
-
Multiculturalism "Are we to indulge in absolute fantasy and say that statistical 'diversity' promotes better intergroup relations, against blatant evidence that it is poisoning people against one another?"
-
Social Security "Nothing is more grossly a transfer of wealth from those with less to those with more. . . . Once we face up to the fact that Social Security is welfare for the elderly, we need to ask ourselves why affluent people of any age should be a burden on others."
-
The Litigation Explosion "The very idea that the burden of proof is on the party who makes a legal charge has gone out the window as far as whole categories of charges are concerned. This is true in . . . so-called women's issues, racial issues, environmental issues, and other crusades pushed by strident activists."
Sowell combines applied reason and common sense with actual historical and statistical evidence to demolish widely held views on these and other controversial subjects, including racial quotas, prayer in schools, the health care system, cultural "identity," Wade versus Roe, gays in the military, the death penalty, Louis Farrakhan, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Thomas Sowell provides tolerant insight........2006-05-26
If you have an open mind in religion and politics, or if you think you have, then Thomas Sowell is for you. He shows us how faith, spirituality, equality and social responsibility can fall into place. Sowell is not intimidated by the people in power. His shows us how tiny the difference is between education and brain-washing, between a capitalist democracy and fascism. My only criticism is that he asks us for the ultimate reason, for common sense and rationality. People are about love and relationships and not about reason. He asks the right questions, but we need to find the right answers.
Classic Sowell.......2004-10-17
The book is a collection of his short articles, organized in the following categories; Social, Economic, Political, Legal, Racial, Education.
Sowell's logical and concise arguments hit like a hammer blow to those on the political left how tend to disagree with him.
The title of the book comes from the first essay in the book. The relevant line in the essay is:
"The Barbarians are not at the gates. They are inside the gates -and have academic tenure, judicial appointments, government grants and control of the movies, television and other media."
Rome didn't fall in a day. Events which caused the fall of the Roman Empire happened decades before Rome fell. Sowell gives us a warning on the future of the USA and some hope that society can improve.
Cuts the Mush.......2004-09-17
Thomas Sowell writes about the most important issues facing the United States today. He is a brillant and insightful thinker who cuts through all the crap and sloppy ideas that the counter-culture has been pushing on us over the past several decades.
Dr. Sowell gives a rational argument for common sense in major issues of society, economic, political, legal, racial and educational.
I love this guy and plan to read more of his books. I even begun writing my legislators. Thomas, I hope you don't mind me using your ideas when I do write them.
Thanks again for putting together these essays that cut through all the cerebral mush.
Thomas Sowell=5 stars. No, make it 10.......2004-07-06
While I've read plenty of work by plenty of writers influencing my beliefs on one issue or another, Thomas Sowell's writing has had a much more profound influence on my thinking: it's changed the very way that I view the world around me. As America becomes more divided and less free, Thomas Sowell is one of the only places I can reliably turn for an interesting dissident voice. In this collection of remarkably succint and insightful essays, Sowell pokes at the foundations of the prevailing ideologies of the day until the whole house of cards comes tumbling down. Although he's typically assigned the simplistic label "conservative," Sowell's analyses go well beyond the tired, often irrelevant divide between the "left" and the "right." Sowell isn't trying to get elected or win any popularity contests, and he doesn't have an ideological axe to grind; he's just a guy with a great deal of respect for logic, truth, and the founding ideals of this country. Indeed, Sowell dispenses with the drivel spouted by politicians of both parties as he cuts through what he calls the "mush" that typically passes for informed debate these days. Sowell has written much about the self-satisfied "anointed" who hold so much power and shape so much of the debate in this country, and he launches a frontal assault in these essays against every bastion of their power. No one is spared from Sowell's disdain for our self-appointed betters: politicians, welfare statists, race hucksters, feminists, the media, the judiciary, and most of all the educational establishment that has sold generations of kids down the river in the name of feel-good "progressive" ideas. Although he typically writes with the utmost restraint, Sowell can be outrageous and sometimes even hilarious, as in this little nugget: "Liberals love to say things like, 'We're just asking everyone to pay their fair share'. But government is not about asking. It is about telling. The difference is fundamental. It is the difference between making love and being raped, between working for a living and being a slave." There are plenty more such penetrating insights to be found here, along with an avalanche of facts, to go along with Sowell's justified contempt at America's modern-day elites. If you read Thomas Sowell and you're not quickly converted to his way of thinking, well then, as someone once said, "You can't handle the truth!"
I am in agreement with the other reviewers.......2003-08-24
Thomas Sowell is more than just a critical thinker: he has a penchant for expressing his ideas with a clarity with which it is difficult to argue. He uses that uncommon commodity known, for some strange reason, as "common sense."
Sowell points out`the ludicrous incongruities of the liberal "philosophy" in terms so plain and unvarnished that only one attempting a proctological examination on themselves could miss it.
An example: "The point of being a superpower is so that no one will attack you and require the sacrifice of more and more young Americans like those buried in this cemetery. We were attacked at Pearl Harbor because we were sitting ducks who had allowed our military forces to dwindle away until we had an army smaller than Portugal's--and not enough equipment even for this small force." Page 7.
Or: "Multiculturism is one of those affectations that people can indulge in when they are enjoying all the fruits of modern technology and can grandly disdain the processes that produced them. None of this would be anything more than another of the many foibles of the human race, except that the cult of multiculturism has become the new religion of our schools and colleges, contributing to the mushing of America. It has become part of the unexamined assumptions underlying public policy and even decisions in courts of law." Page 19.
Or: "Much of the current uproar about IQ differences between blacks and whites does not get down to the rock-bottom question: What is there to explain? The average score of blacks in IQ tests in the United States is about 85, compared to a national averge of 100. Is that unusual? No. It is not." He goes on to explain that various groups of various ancestries have had IQs of 85 at various times and places, and he names some of them, and says that the phenomenon is not peculiar to the United States, and he admits that he doesn't know why. Even American aoldiers of the First World War had lower IQs than our soldiers of the Second World War. Page 176.
This is a man to be reckoned with, and these essays are valuable for their insights, most of which effectively puncture widely and emotionally held ideas, especially those that are deemed "politically correct," and institutionalized unquestioned dogma of the liberal anointed who think they are qualified to tell the rest of us how to think and act.
