Book Description
Tapestry crochet differs from ordinary crochet in its texture, tension, and how colors are manipulated. Two or more yarns are worked at the same time to create intricate or simple motifs. One yarn is carried while the other yarn is worked over it. Depending on the tension and number of yarns carried, the finished fabric can be stiff or supple, and may take any flat or three-dimensional form. Tapestry crochet has the flexibility and portability of crochet, but the finished pieces look woven.
The tapestry crocheted shoulder bags of highland Guatemala and the hats of Cameroon inspired the wide variety of flat and three-dimensional projects in this book. Instructions are included for both right-handed and left-handed crocheters. Besides full instructions, information is shared about the history of tapestry crochet around the world and special graph papers and instructions help readers to design their own projects and motifs!

This book is very interesting...I've made two projects from it already. The beginners will like this because you only need to learn a few basic stitches (chain, single crochet)and then follow the very complete directions to complete a project....some will take hours, some will take weeks.
The advanced crocheter will appreciate the history included in the book and also learning a new technique. Creating pictures by carrying the thread across a row is different for many crocheter's as we usually use bobbins....you'll enjoy reading about the author also.

More Tapesty Crochet is a step up from her first book "Tapestry Crochet" -- it delves in deeper into the history of this unique craft and explains its many different cultural applications.
The patterns given in this book are very similar to the first book, it also gives a very detailed explanation of developing your own designs and patterns. The Author has learned a lot from her own mistakes and experimentation and tries to relay all that information to the reader so they can get going more quickly.
If you only buy one of the author's Tapestry books -- I recommend this one (it provides all the information of the first plus more detail), but the original book still provides different designs and ideas that compliment this one quite nicely.

Words just about escape me when I try to explain this book but I will try. It is a work of art, packed full of very fascinating history of crochet, and the illustrated directions are so clear and easy to follow, including left and right hand directions. Oh the purses in here are just beautiful and yes it does have the full instructions for them!! It also shows a very, new to me anyway, crochet technique that I just can't wait to try. This book is a great addition to any crocheters library.

This "Labor of Love," as she calls her book, is truly a gem. Designed and published by Carol herself, the book is colorful and well illustrated. A former Peace Corps volunteer as well, I know the hardships that Carol endured as a volunteer in Guatemala in the late 70's. I also know that passions that grow for colorful cultures, so unlike our own, by the sheer intensity of living and serving others in their unique milieu. The book shows the depth of study Carol has undertaken for her topic and a maturity in her design concepts, since her first book, "Tapestry Crochet," was published in 1991. In addition to the exciting projects, there is a wealth of knowledge about tapestry crochet and its history; natural fibers; examples of ethnic pieces from different corners of the world; right and left-handed instructions and her incredibly useful and unique graph paper. Dr. Ventura lists come great resources for crochet enthusiasts and includes a website where color photos of all the projects can be seen.

Easier to Learn.......2007-05-21
I can't say enough about this book. I had been away from drawing animals for 36 years and needed something to refresh my memory on technique's,along with the proper tools and paper to use. This book starts out with that in mind at the beginning and gives you several different looks at how pencil or ink or wash looks. You don't need a lot of tools to start drawing with this book,in fact I used a 2b pencil for most of it.
Then it goes to the three artist who drew these animals in this book and each in their own way talk about animals in perspective and contour,lighting and so on. Each artist touches upon the over all bone construction and muscles of the animals and makes it easier for you to get an idea what they should look like after you've finished drawing their skin so to speak.
I was very happy to see a lot was done on the horse and the many breeds of them,showing me what to look for in each breed,like how thick is this horses muzzle compared to another horse. It also showed different angles and how to measure when foreshortening the horse in a drawing.
The cat section was great.I felt the once you learn how to use circles and boxes to draw a house cat then you can move on to the big game cats. There is much in this book about motion when it comes to cats and several different views are shown along with several different breeds.
The only part of the book that I thought was lacking by the artist is that that there was less instuction on drawing a dog and it showed many breeds,but actual drawing the different parts in different sizes and shapes was very lacking.
Over all i recommend this book mostly for the beginner or someone who has a little more experience.

When Sandy MacKenrick told my CalArts MFA Thesis committee that my thesis film script was, "long, much too long, and very much too long" and, "doomed to never be completed", I was shocked and terrified.
Sandy was one of the most brilliant and irritating people ever to tell a story or to browbeat an egotistical young film student. His films and lectures convey that contradiction -- his every work is a pearl.
If you were not lucky enough to get Sandy's notes while at CalArts, you must buy this book.
Odds are good, you won't have the genius of Sandy MacKendrick, but you will appreciate how much you could grow as you strive to attain what he found so simple.
I was proud to invite Sandy to the first screening of my thesis film, "Pirate's Dagger", and it still hurts that he was too ill to attend. I wouldn't have gotten it done without his special form of encouragement.
Great man, great book........2007-01-12
Too intelligent to be a director, to make compromises in the craft of film making with the studio system of his time, Alexander Mackendrick only left us a glimpse of his own potential in his body of work. He did however pass his vision and passion for creativity onto the next generation in his teaching. In this book his voice is loud and clear, without being dogmatic. It's like having a drink with a friend in a bar and having him sort out all your problems with scripts, actors and life. No director should be without a copy. From the beginner to the established star everybody can find something in this book and all conveyed in the manner both intense and unpatronising that was uniquely his.

Unlike most how-to directing and writing books, Mackendrick was an accomplished director with decades of professional experience. He speaks from hard-won experience, not dubious armchair notions of what makes a successful film or director. He is wise enough to know there are no "secrets" or immutable laws of storytelling, only rules of thumb. Every time I go back to it, I learn something new, and with every film I make, I am struck by points in the book which ring ever more true. This book will not make you a great director by reading it, but Mackendrick has the good sense and candor to know that a book or a course never will, only lots and lots of hard work and dedication.
How To Make Movies, Good Movies.......2005-08-19
Shaw said, "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." In a strange way, Alexander Mackendrick fits both sides of that dictum. "Sandy" Mackendrick was an accomplished film director. After having worked in advertising, he started making films for the British Government during World War II. After the war he wrote scripts and he began directing. For the Ealing Studios, he made _Whiskey Galore!_, _The Man in the White Suit_, and _The Ladykillers_. Then he came to Hollywood, where he made the wonderfully biting _Sweet Smell of Success_. He could direct fine movies, and he did; but then he slipped into the "can't do" category, not for any lack of talent, but because he was not much of a deal-maker, and resented having to negotiate details with the studios. He started teaching, becoming dean of the film school at the California Institute of the Arts in 1969. He continued teaching until his death in 1993, but now filmmakers and audiences can get a glimpse of what he taught, in _On Film-making: An Introduction to the Craft of the Director_ (Faber and Faber). It is a sampling of his lecture handouts, some illustrated by his own sketches, that he delivered to students over the years, and shows the richness of his thinking on the surprising complexities of artistic decisions regarding even simple shoots on tiny films. Those who enjoy movies, but don't know much about how they are made, will be astonished at how many details of technique the director has to consider before anyone yells "Action!" Those who make movies, or want to, could not do better than to study what Mackendrick has to say.
Mackendrick emphatically agrees with Truffaut, who in his interview book with Hitchcock wrote, "Whatever is _said_ instead of being _shown_ is lost on the viewer." (One of Mackendrick's many slogans: "Movies SHOW... and then TELL.") Always, regard to the audience is paramount: "Try to tell the story while always remembering that the audience has somewhere better to go and something better to do." Like a good storyteller, use curiosity, expectation, and suspense to keep them buttonholed. The reader of this book will want to be familiar with certain films to which Mackendrick returns again and again, like _The Third Man_ or _On the Waterfront_, but not all the cinema is fine cinema. In a chapter titled "Plausibility and Willing Suspension of Disbelief," he discusses the sci-fi film _Them!_ which he says is a "piece of nonsense" but shows solid, simple plot mechanisms, and follows the rule that "we are allowed only one major Incredible Thing" (Giant ants are invading!) while "everything else in the story should actually be logical, even over-logical." There is rich advice about dealing with actors. A student who asked, "How does a director get an actor to do what he wants?" took Mackendrick off guard, as he had never asked the question in those terms. It's the wrong question. "You don't," came the eventual answer, "You try to get the actor to want what you need."
Mackendrick knows you can't teach the art and inspiration that directors have to have intuitively, though there is a useful chapter titled "A Technique for Having Ideas." The craft involved in direction, though, has a possibility of being taught, and he has here covered the craft from scriptwriting through editing. I only sit in audiences for films (and the intimidating muster of factors Mackendrick brings up that the director must consider tells me I am in the right spot in front of the screen, not behind the camera), but I have a much better appreciation for what a director does after reading these fine instructions. I also wish that every director now working would simply follow these rules. The principles here, if followed universally, would benefit directors, audiences, and the quality of Hollywood's output, not to mention its bottom line.

Amazing True Stories from World War II.......2001-09-25
This book contains the true stories of the men of the first Army Air Corps Navigational Class in 1940. The classes were held at Miami University in Coral Gables, Florida. The 44 young men of that first class became known as the Class of 40-A. The instructor for these navigators-to-be was Charlie Lunn.
The author, Colonel Whitcomb, was a member of that Class of 40-A. As such, he is uniquely qualified to tell the story of their adventures.
Their stories are dramatic. These men were plunged into World War II with a vengeance. Several of them were killed by enemy forces. Those who survived sometimes faced situations worse than death. The men who were caught by the Japanese were often beaten, starved and killed. When American soldiers were transported by Japanese ships, the conditions were especially terrible. No water or air created maddening results.
The author describes how demoralizing it was for U.S. troops in the Philippines. With the Japanese forces against them, U.S. forces were constantly attacked by shelling and bombing. Backups for the Americans were promised but failed to materialize.
But with the aircraft that survived enemy attacks American pilots and navigators were able to bomb the Japanese. The Doolittle Raid on Tokyo is described in this book. And the later firebombing raids on Tokyo were also very effective at hurting the enemy.
Wherever their missions took them, the navigators and pilots often had to contend with antiaircraft fire and enemy fighter planes. They also had to at times deal with their own damaged aircraft, tropical storms, lack of fuel and lack of sleep. In spite of the trying conditions, the navigators of the Class of 40-A were able to guide their planes to numerous successful missions against the enemy. And ultimately, American forces won the war.
This book from 1995 is published by Air University Press, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

that's my 2nd review after having my first one unpublished so far.let's just hope that this one goes through this time.basically i just wanted to re-emphasize my points here to other fellow readers: 1)in this book,mark claims that him and cathy were being chased by the cia all along since they had in their possessions classified info about the illegal activities of the u.s government,so what happened now??why isn't the cia or the "bad guys" after them anymore not to mention how public mark and cathy are??did they just decide to "forgive" them and "let them go" all out of the blue just like that?? 2)talking about cathy's numerous encounters with the elite,why isn't there a single photo of mark and/or cathy in the book with america's elitists??the book successfully provides tons of scans in attempting to prove their story but not a single photo of a u.s bad elitist with them(not necessarily in a shameful situation)?? 3)mark and cathy claim that in their attempt to escape the assassination attempts of the cia they have traveled and lived temporarily in alaska(where they reportedly succeeded in evading them by doing so).now didn't anyone wonder about how come the u.s was able to control the world and become its global superpower but wasn't able to find 3 regular fugitives in one of its very own states??hope that everyone thinks about all these points,any comments are welcomed if i was wrong anywhere.thanks
Powerful People Out of Control.......2007-08-26
The woman's story illustrates what can happen when un-principled people are allowed to operate in secret. Names are named, and while not graphic in the pornographic sense she does name sex acts she was forced to perform. This book is about Mind Control experiments conducted in secret by certain government agencies that are still ongoing today. Think this can't be real? Think US soldiers were never experimented on with LSD? Think US Soldiers were never exposed to Atomic Blasts in the Nevada deserts? All of this is a matter of public record, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. A thought provoking book.
Is There Anything You Can't Swallow?.......2007-08-08
As Lincoln noted, you can fool some of the people all of the time. It says something about the state of humanity that so many people are willing-no,eager-to accept nonsense like this as "true". But then, when millions of Americans believe that the the moon landings were faked no one should be surprised that millions more would take this book and uncritically accept it as being factual. But just because "anything is possible" doesn't mean that "everything is true". I have no idea whether Ms. O'Brien believes what she's written or whether her books are a cross between a practical joke and a psychology experiment-"Is there anything that they won't believe?" At any rate reading the reviews of this book that take it seriously are much more disturbing than anything that could be included in it. The crimes that the CIA really committed from its very foundation are horrible enough. Books like this make them sound ridiculous. Is it possible that Ms. O'Brien is an operative who's mission is to make such absurd claims that normal people refuse to even examine the subject?

Un libro a primera vista increíble y a la vez una realidad que afecta no solo a los Estados Unidos sino también al resto del mundo, un llamado de urgencia a la atención de los ciudadanos del mundo a abrir los ojos. El libro Trance: Formation of America, aunque lamentablemente no editado en castellano, impacta por lo crudo de su contenido y porque pone al descubierto la participación de "grandes" personalidades de diferentes sectores del gobierno Norteamericano en este proyecto de "control mental" a gran escala. Lo considero un libro de lectura obligatoria.

Dudley ranges widely--from basic aerodynamics to muscle physiology and swarming behavior--but his focus is the explanation of functional design from evolutionary and ecological perspectives.
The importance of flight in the lives of insects has long been recognized but never systematically evaluated. This book addresses that shortcoming. This book has something of a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality. A reader who is comfortable reading research literature on insects will find an organized, thoroughly documented and well-balanced summary of current knowledge of insect flight. Unfortunately, Dudley is one of those scholars whose writing is saturated with technical jargon and complex sentences, even when simpler English could make the same point. So while the content is great, reading this work is the mental equivalent of hiking through knee-deep snow. Enthusiastic entomologists will find it worth reading: everyone else will find it hard to follow.
