Book Description

A remarkable sequel to the Lambda award-winning Naked Men: Pioneering Male Nudes 1900-1950, Naked Men, Too, exposes the breakthrough nude male photography and art that changed the perception of male beauty. Focusing on the work of influential photographers such as George Platt Lynes, Robert Mapplethorpe, Harriet Leibowitz, and Bruce Weber, author David Leddick chronicles the visual revolution that paralleled social and sexual liberation since the late 1950's. With brief biographies of the models, including early renegades like Yves St. Laurent, Joe Dallesandro, Rupert Everett and more-this provocative book features reproductions of the original photos alongside portraits of the models today. This dynamic history of male nudity in art and advertising is for all audiences, gay and straight.

5 out of 5 stars The Naked Male Is Liberated!.......2004-06-12

David Leddick continues in this second volume of naked men what he began in NAKED MEN, PIONEERING MALE NUDES, 1935-1955, bringing us up to 2000, the year this volume was published. The genie is out of the bottle as famous and unknown men pose before many different photographers. In addition to George Platt Lynes, there are photographs here by George Dureau, Ken Duncan, Francesco Scavullo, Tom Bianchi, Robert Mapplethorpe, Greg Gorman, Harriet Liebowitz, Jim French, Pierre & Gilles, to name a few. Additionally there are drawings and/or paintings by Paul Cadmus, Michael Leonard, Don Bachardy and George Dureau. Among the famous and sometimes infamous men who bared all are Yves Saint Laurent, Rupert Everett, David Kopay, the exhibitionist Peter Berlin who apparently only photographs himself, Charlton Heston--hello!--Burt Lancaster from THE SWIMMER-- remember that 1968 movie made from a John Cheever short story?-- Peter Hinwood, whose name probably means nothing to you until you find out that he was the god Rocky Horror in ROCKY HORROR SHOW-- and Joe Dallesandro, one of Andy Warhol's superstars, who has not aged particularly well, photographed here by Scavullo. Finally we are graced by at least three porn stars: Ryan Idol; Cal Culver a/k/a Casey Donovan, who died of AIDS in 1987; and the notorious Jeff Stryker, (pp. 86-87) whose photo here is a hoot. He is demurely posed, stretched out on a flower-patterned couch with his back to the camera in the tradition of a 19th Century painting of a nude woman. (Seeing that hilarious photograph alone is worth the price of the book.)

Choosing favorite photographs is challenging. I particularly like Harriet Liebowitz's work (pp. 92-93) for her exquisite composition. Both photographs by Pierre & Gilles as always are creative and look like no other artist's work: Midnight Cowboy (pp. 98-99) and Casanova on pages 128-29. The photo of Larry Schleinz by Barry McKinley (p. 9) might have been the sexiest shot in the book had it had not been for the Romain Johnson photo by George Platt Lynes (pp. 24-25) done in 1953. It's easy to see why Leddick chose the photo of Anthony La Fauci by Dianora Niccolina (pp. 76-77) for the cover. Finally I nominate three contemporary photographs of men who have aged beautifully for the "Joy Of Aging" award: John Eddy (p. 82), Scott Wilson, (39) and Mike Helie on page 59.

Collecting these photographs and meeting the models must have been a labor of love. A great concept for a book, Mr. Leddick.

5 out of 5 stars great history.......2004-03-18

this book provides an excellent history to the photography of nude men. Beautiful photographs and beautiful men. This collection has helped me out quite a few times.

5 out of 5 stars A continuation of Naked Men.......2002-06-04

As good as its predecessor; highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Photos.......2001-05-04

The photography in this book is top notch. I am especially fond of the man on the cover, Anthony LaFauci. He is the empitome of the ultimate male nude!!!

4 out of 5 stars Better as a continuing journal than a photography book.......2000-11-28

Following "Naked Men" with "Naked Men Too" adds to the resource literature on the development of gender perception during the past century. This is an informative book (yes, there is actually material to READ as well as to see) and to this reviewer the words are better than the varying degrees of quailty in the photography and art. This book may initally appeal to the voyeur but the accompanying text is concise and very helpful in exploring the ever present question of "why is frontal male nudity such a problem for contemporary viewers?". Recommended.

I don't know where to start about this book. The character studies are informative, the comic sections are interesting, the art seems to flow off the page into your mind's eye. The faces are well done, and the figures very lifelike. It seems everyone knows about Omaha, but now you can find out a little about how the artist thinks.

            5 out of 5 stars A must in every screenwriter's library.......2006-08-06

Read and analyse your script from cover page, FADE IN to FADE OUT. Derek Rydall packs a lot of useful information in this well thought out, well written book. This is the meat and potatoes of the biz.
Do yourself a huge favor and read this book before you submit your next script. Chapter Two shows you how the studios see the difference between an amateur wannabee and a pro. Chapter Four brings in a wealth of good advice from well known experts like Linda Seger, Michael Hauge and David Freeman. David Freeman's sample scene analysis alone might make the difference between being kicked up the ladder or kicked out the door. You need every tool you can get your hands on to make your script a contender. Make this book part of your arsenal.
Whether you want to get your scripts in the door or want to be a script consultant this could be your blue prints to success.

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY Book of Its Kind...A Great Way to a 6-Figure Income!.......2006-05-30

I really liked this book and I believe that there aren't any others like this one. It talks about how you can start a highly lucrative business as a script consultant and a re-writer.

The only thing that makes me hesitant is the ease (or difficulty) in establishing credibility as a consultant if one hasn't written anything worth mentioning.

Other than that, this is an incredible book and I hope that not too many people read it because it's an INCREDIBLE business idea and I want to pursue it myself.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Insight into the Business.......2006-04-24

Can anyone who has ever been to a movie not have looked at some of them and wondered how such trash got produced? No one would start out with the intend of making a bad movie. You have to wonder how a group of people, presumably experienced and not unintelligent have produced something like that.

This book is written by a script consultant who tells what it's like to review and consult on the movie that's about to be made. While we all think that we could do this work, here's what the work involves. Here's how to get started. The best advice that I think he gives is work with someone in the business to at least establish the contacts.

This is a business like any other. You need at least the understanding of who does what. It is unlikely that very many of the readers of the book will actually become successful at script consulting, but it is still interesting reading to see what is done. It's an interesting insight into the movie production business.

            5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2006-02-28

As a screenwriter, this is the 14th book I've read on the subject, and by far the best. Derek Rydall not only prepares you externally to be a script consultant, he prepares you internally as well; forcing you to peel back the layers of your own psyche, and examine your inner obstacles to your own success.
Derek is not afraid to share his failures along with his successes, to help you avoid making the same mistakes. Each chapter starts with a few appropriate and inspirational quotes that create the setting for the chapter, and inspire the reader. What can I say? If it's not in the book, you don't need it! Five stars for this book that helps you shoot for the moon.

5 out of 5 stars How to analyze stories in any form, write coverage, repair scripts, negotiate contracts and more.......2005-12-04

There are plenty of movies on the market which feature substandard writing - so bad that even an audience member might think they can do better, let alone an aspiring screenwriter. If you're a member of the latter group, I Could've Written A Better Movie Than That! How To Make Six Figures As A Script Consultant Even If You're Not A Screenwriter is for you. It tells how to use this sense of perfection to earn cash as a script consultant, and comes from author Rydall's years of experience in the industry. Chapters show how to analyze stories in any form, write coverage, repair scripts, negotiate contracts and more. Plenty of books tell how to write the script: few, except for this, tell how to make money repairing one.

            Book Description

An explosive docu-biography of New York's most subversive punk band Suicide, who along with the New York Dolls, the Ramones, Blondie, Television and Talking Heads defined the US punk scene centered around Max's Kansas City and CBGB's.

The book features new interview material with many of the leading lights of the NY punk scene, including Alan Vega and Martin Rev from the band, as well as Debbie Harry and Chris Stein from Blondie, Moby, Henry Rollins, Marc Almond, Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Jim Reid (Jesus & Mary Chain), Lydia Lunch, Jane County, amongst others. Illustrated with over 100 photos and memorabilia from Vega and Rev's own archives, Nobakht's penetrating biography recreates the '70s world of New York City.

            5 out of 5 stars A long overdue tribute.......2005-07-15

It is hard to believe that a book about NYC's Suicide has not been done before whilst the Velvet Underground have a fair few books on the shelves about them.

No Compromise mainly consists of interviews with Rev, Vega and people like New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain, Chris Stein from Blondie and many others. This book is a must for anyone into New York's seventies music scene. Maybe there could have been more analysis of Suicide's music, but I would rather read what the band have to say than pages and pages of boring speculation. No Compromise is well worth getting.

1 out of 5 stars should be titled "Errors in Punk u ation" .......2005-07-04

The Book is a must for 70's nyc RnR sceen fans. It's very informative however needs an extreem make over as far as editing goes. The worst part is it's a gradual revelation or should I say death. At first I thought Martin Rev spoke a little scattered but when you see Alan Vega's qoutes feature similar grammar, you realize they are misquotes and punctuation errors. Misplaced periods are all over the book or should I say jotted notes!

5 out of 5 stars Their story is finally told.......2005-03-28

Suicide, New York's electronic, pioneering stroppy legends finally get the book treatment. Suicide were sadly not featured in Legs McNeil's excellent Please Kill Me and No Compromise thankfully gives them the chance to fire off their story.

Author, David Nobakht, has gone for the oral approach and No Compromise is packed full of exclusive interviews with Rev and Vega where they discuss their influences, poverty, struggle, rejection, confrontation, sound and surviving New York right up to the present day. There are also comments from the people that were there and the people that were influenced. This book captures the grime of seventies New York and Suicide's uphill struggle to gain recognition, which they eventually did years later. With many of New York's legends now sadly gone and CBGB's facing closure, we should not take Suicide for granted and it is cool that a book has at last been dedicated to them and a fine book it is too...

4 out of 5 stars At last a book about New York's greatest band.......2005-03-28

I was lucky enough to see Suicide play at Max's during the late seventies and have followed them ever since. Along with The Velvet Underground, Martin Rev and Alan Vega's sound has influenced many over the last thirty years and too many to mention here.

It is great that someone has been brave enough to get off their backside and write a book about them. This is the first book about Suicide since they started in 1971.

This book is an oral history of Suicide that documents not only their story, but also what was happening in music and politics in New York at the time. There are fresh interviews with Rev, Vega and comments from those that witnessed and were involved in Suicide's harrowing, moving, often funny and confrontational story.

The author does an excellent job with his research and calls on Chris Stein from Blondie, Sylvain Sylvain from the New York Dolls and Jayne County to tell their side of the story. Lydia Lunch and James Chance also give their comments. There are also eye witness accounts and comments from fans such as Bobby Gillespie, Michael Stipe, Jim Reid, Bono, Moby and Marc Almond.

The chapter on Suicide supporting The Clash in '78 does not flinch away from the barrage of physical abuse that was thrown at these two pioneers by a vicious and misunderstanding audience. The book brings their story right up to date and also includes a chapter on their more recent side projects. No Compromise is a highly enjoyable read and a long overdue tribute to a pioneering band and the New York most of us never want to forget. One last observation. This book would make a great documentary or film.

4 out of 5 stars A great book about a great New York band.......2005-03-28

This is one awesome read. In addition to Martin Rev and Alan Vega telling their story, you get taken on a trip back to seventies New York. To name a few, Jayne County, Chris Stein, Sylvain Sylvain and Peter Crowley from Max's all comment on Suicide and New York itself. I have noticed one reviewer on this site being over critical about punctuation. I did not notice any great problems within No Compromise and do feel that this book gives the band the credit they truly deserve. Maybe the other reviewer is jealous that he did not have the balls to attempt such a project. You should read the review he gave the equally as good Iggy Pop book. This is a great book for anyone interested in the band and New York itself. A good companion to Please Kill Me...

              Book Description

The metaphor of the flood is what this book is about. Floods surround us. They threaten to undo us. Nowhere is the coming flood of change more ominous than in the basic unit of society: the family. The purpose of New Millennium Families is to offer a roadmap of encouragement and hope to families facing their own personal floods, and to say, "You can soar above whatever flood that comes your way." Soaring demands work, commitment, trust, and discipline, but it can turn a flood of disaster into a rainbow of hope.

New Millennium Families: How you can soar above the coming flood of change offers a blueprint to rebuilding America's eroding families. Dr. Blackwell provides much needed hope that families can survive the onslaught of problems that plague our nation. As an attorney who represents abused and neglected children, I witness the devastating effects of parental substance use, indifference, abandonment, and violence. Dr. Blackwell's practical and insightful guide encourages us to proactively protect all children and zealously guard our own families and values. As the book illustrates by Dr. Blackwell's poignant stories, the task ahead is daunting. However, Dr. Blackwell's refreshing approach underscores the constant that all things are possible through God's grace. Although this book is a quick and easy read, its imprint is profound and lasting. The real challenge lies in implementing Dr. Blackwell's vision for the next millennium. New Millennium Families is an excellent resource that should be read by all.

New Millennium Families offers the reader practical, specific solutions to problems arising from the erosion of family bonds in contemporary American society. The purpose of New Millennium Families is to offer a roadmap of encouragement and hope to families facing the accelerating stress, strain, and shock buffeting them by the present culture, lawlessness, temptations, and corrosive neglect of family values that so hallmark today's workplace, school systems, communities, and entertainments. Poignant examples drive home Michael Blackwell's message of hope and healing, salvage and redemption that will lift the family from a quagmire of dissent and disappointment to a new plateau of faith, function, and familial reward.

4 out of 5 stars Life in the North during the Civil War.......2001-03-09

In a sense, "Twenty Million Yankees: The Northern Home Front" is one of the secondary books in the Time-Life series on The Civil War. After all, this book by Donald Dale Jackson and the Editors of Time-Life Books does not talk about battles or generals, politicians or issues. What it does do is look at what things were like for the common folks back home (a similar volume, "Confederate Ordeal" looks at the Southern side of the equation). Chapter 1, "Fissures of Dissent," looks at the political divisions that existed in the North, personified by men such as New York "Tribune" publisher and self-appointed gadfly Horace Greeley and Ohio Congressman Clement Vallandigham, hero of the Peace Democrats. Chapter 2, "The Enterprising Union," covers the economic machine that fueled the Union war effort. Chapter 3, "Mustering the Legions," details how recruitment eventually gave way to the first military drafts. Chapter 4, "An Artery of Love," focuses on the Sanitary Commission that was established to support the soldiers in the field. Chapter 5, "The Political Battles," covers the Presidential election of 1864 in which Lincoln defeated former general McClellan. The book ends with several full-page photographs of Lincoln showing how he changed over the course of the war. "Twenty Million Yankees" has the virtue of covering in more depth topics that are normally not part of the record when reading about the great battles of the Civil War. Consequently, a lot of what you read in here will be new information, even for the serious Civil War buff.

                Book Description

The racial gap in academic performance between whites and Asians, on the one hand, and Latinos and blacks, on the other hand, is America's most urgent educational problem. It is also the central civil rights issue of our time, say Abigail and Stephan Thernstrom. Unequal skills and knowledge are the main sources of ongoing racial inequality, and racial inequality is America's great unfinished business.

A wide and tragic gap in learning is evident in affluent suburbs as well as inner cities. But great schools are scattered across the country, as described in inspiring detail by the Thernstroms. These schools are putting even the most highly disadvantaged children on the American ladder of economic opportunity.

There are no good excuses for the perpetuation of long-standing inequalities, the Thernstroms argue eloquently. The problem can be solved, but conventional strategies will not work. Fundamental educational reform is needed. Carefully researched, accessibly written, and powerfully persuasive, this book offers both a close analysis of the current landscape and a blueprint for essential and overdue change.

4 out of 5 stars Urban Education Synergies.......2007-09-15

This book's authors explore the effects of public schools, charter schools, poverty, and ethnic culture on school achievement. They push a theory, based on considerable data, that the African American achievement gap is more a result of cultural influences than poverty or poor schools. While this might be seen as "blaming the victim", the evidence sited is compelling as are the examples of schools that appear to be dealing with these cultural influences more effectively than others. I consider it a must read for anyone attempting to solve the achievement gap problem facing African Americans.

3 out of 5 stars Useful facts, right attitude, analysis not very sharp.......2007-05-09

There is a fair amount of good stuff in this book. It focuses alot on race and ethnicity, and that discussion is very helpful. For example, in the chapter on Hispanics, the authors give a very useful summary of the economic position of Hispanics. (No, they are not all poor. They look poor, because we are constantly flooded with new poor Mexicans, but, after Hispanics are in the US for a few generations, they do fine.)

The authors also have the right attitude toward school. They believe that everyone can be taught. They believe that all schools can be good schools. They do not buy the usual blarney about how come we can not educate poor kids until after the Revolution.

That said, however, the book falls down hard on its actual analysis of WHY so many schools stink and exactly what we can do about it. They tell some stories about very good schools in very bad areas. What these stories basically tell us is that there are a few, highly charismatic, teachers and educational leaders out there, who have gotten fabulous results in unpromising places. These stories are not very helpful, however, because we can not fix the whole system, by trying to find no teachers who are not inspiring and charismatic. If the system needs extraordinary people to produce acceptable results, then we are not going to solve this problem.

The authors do also advocate standards-based testing, which has become relatively conventional conservative advice for school reform. I think they are correct, as far as it goes, but this is not enough to fix the system.

1 out of 5 stars Blatant Stereotyping and Over-Generalization.......2006-10-27

The best part of reading this book was finishing it, and turning directly to Jonathan Kozol's "Shame of the Nation". The Thernstroms bombard readers with "facts", graphs, charts, and a whole lot of stereotypes and dangerous assumption. For starters, they must have a different place in mind when they describe the "affluent town" of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Clearly they've never stepped outside the Ivy walls of Harvard Square. If they did, they would see first hand the gross injustice being done in the shadows of these walls...an urban public high school that is nowhere near the profile that they provide. They go on to describe, with great confidence, different groups as chapter titles as crass as "Asians" "Hispanics" and "Blacks". Don't bother with this...pick up anything by Kozol, Deborah Meier, Gary Orfield, Richard Elmore, or Richard Rothstein instead.

4 out of 5 stars Controversial, yet very informative.......2006-03-28

The title of this book No Excuses sums up the content that is in the book. The Thernstroms explain the causes of the Achievement Gap, BUT takes it one step further saying that these are just the causes--NOT EXCUSES! Many people look at the achievement gap and label what the problems are but do not go any further. The Thernstroms provide examples of a few schools that are successfully tackling the achievement gap. However, these schools are not the typical public schools because they are funded by outside sources and they have the freedom to choose how funds will be spent without government involvement. This book has been very controversial, and there are parts of the book that requires an open mind free from other perspectives in order to fully understand where the authors are coming from. We found that we learned the most when we opened our mind this way, but still there were parts that we just do not agree with and probably never will. This is a great book that brings awareness to other perspectives for overcoming the achievement gap.

4 out of 5 stars good data, weak conclusions.......2006-03-09

I rated this book 4 stars because of the wealth of data presented that began to build an excellent case for making some fundamental changes to the way we run our public, especially urban, schools. Being a teacher in an inner-city high school I witness everything the authors document in this book.

In short, I believe (as said the Thernstroms) that the problems stem mainly from the culture and attitudes of the students (and their families) that run counter to academic success and achievement. By the way, these traits are NOT limited to minority children; I've worked with many white and Asian students who have adopted many of these same characteristics, and subsequently perform abysmally in school. I see it as a lack of learned discipline that permeates these students' lives. The discipline that enables most people to overcome difficulties, persist in rigorous studies of abstract and often not-so-interesting concepts, and finally to master academic subjects prerequisite for advanced topics is usually sorely missing. This lack of discipline is not only harmful to their learning, but will also limit their success in life.

As I stated earlier, the first 12 chapters are excellent and enlightening; all who are interested in public education should read this. But the authors drop the ball in the last and concluding chapter, where they finally place 99% of the blame at the feet of the schools. Now, I will be the first to admit that there are many things that could be improved in the public schools, but "solutions" described in chapter 13 will fix NONE of what the authors spent 12 chapters telling us was the problem - namely, the culture of the students.

The Thernstroms were headed in the right direction in the earlier chapters when they pointed out the differences in the charter schools they deemed more effective: longer instructional day, stringent behavioral standards, and strong (and required) parental involvement. These are areas most teachers I know would love to change, but it is the administrators and the lawyers (and most parents) who keep these changes from occurring. It is the government's own rules and restrictions that force the urban public schools to coddle these children from K to 12, in terms of academics (with social promotion) and behavior. In fact, there are almost no consequences for truancy, poor performance, or bad behavior. Teachers are not allowed to instill discipline and order in the schools, and most of our students do NOT receive either in the home. This, I believe, is why the majority of my students cannot master grade-level mathematics.

So read this book for a great description of the realities that plague our urban public schools, but do not rely on it for any real solutions to the seemingly intractible problems we face.

Written by Roger Schroeder, this book is a summary of Ernest Muehlmatt's carving techniques that takes the reader through the steps of carving song birds using a power carver. Mr. Schroeder's writting style is difficult to get used to. He uses many un-necessary adjectives to describe the process of carving. Much of the first part of the book is devoted to reviewing Mr. Muehlmatt's personal opinions in bird carving. The reader gets a sense that Mr. Muehlmatt is quite egotistical. Nonetheless, the book does go over a few techniques useful to aquire for both carving and painting birds. Although geared toward people who use power carving tools, much of the information can be used for those who utilize knives and gouges. The second part of the book includes patterns of some common song birds and a pictorograph showing how each one was carved and painted. This turns out to be the most useful part of the book. Overall, readers will gain some knowledge of song bird carving and painting and a lot of insight into the thought process of Ernest Muehlmatt, albeit at the expense of sifting through the cumbersome writing sytle of Roger Schroeder.

                      Book Description

After the strong success of Roger Everett's first book Wading and Shore Birds, we are pleased to offer this new collection: Favorite Songbirds. With over 100 full-color photographs of exquisite beauty, Roger offers images of the birds we know and love the best: cardinals. chickadees, goldfinches, robins, and orioles. These are the birds that inhabit our yards and neighborhoods. Their songs please our ears, their color pleases our eyes. They are also favorite subjects of painters and carvers who will welcome this new collection of clear, accurate images. Whether you are a birder, a carver, or someone who simply loves good photography, this book will be a pleasure to own. Roger's work has graced the pages of some of the nation's leading nature magazines and has been sought after by collectors. Now you may share in its beauty.
