A must for all Graphic Designers.......2006-11-10
This book is a great reference and reminder of the basic elements that make graphic design and visual communication effective! Every student in any graphic design program should buy this book!
Gregg Berryman knows what he is writing about!
Awesome reference! Still have my copy from 1987! .......2006-01-17
I got this book during my junior year in high school for an intro to graphic design class...and still refer to it every so often. I would recommend it for any graphic designer, especially students, as it has a wealth of knowledge-from basic design principles to the grid, typogrpahy, etc.- contained in it's small amount of pages.
A must have for any graphic designer!
Graphic Design 101.......2001-07-17
Notes on Graphic Design and Visual Communication is the most essential graphic design book written. Despite being very thin in quantity of pages, this book holds an enormous amount of graphic knowledge. I am currently studying Industrial Design and was refered to this book by a professor to help me with my graphic design knowledge. It opened the world of graphics up to me in an easy to read, fun package. The only complaint I`ve heard of this book is the font used for text. This book has a hand written font which can sometimes be hard to read. I have had no problems with the font however.
Berryman does it again!.......1999-04-27
You couldn't hope to get more useful information from a 460 page book than you do from this thin 46 page book. I learned 90% of what I was taught in 5 separate design classes within this single tiny book. It's a must-have for all beginning, and even expert, designers!
Everything you want to know about design in 45 pages or less.......1999-01-06
I picked this book up in 1979 as an aspiring advertising copywriter who wanted to know more about graphic design. Now, after 20 years in the advertising business, as both a creative director and agency owner, I still refer novice ad writers and art directors to this wonderful overview. I simply can't believe how much easy-to-understand info is condensed into so few pages. My bravos and acknowledgements to Berryman.

Book Description
The joke is a literary genre: a folksy interpretation of a short story. Clever readers looking for more than a rudimentary punch line, lovers of "shaggy dog stories," as well as those who appreciate lighthearted insights into personal relationships, send-ups of human folly, and our preoccupation with sex will find these amusing jokes enormously entertaining.

Inspirational And Empowering Book For All Women... "What women give to this world is more than this world could ever do without. I ve learned that a woman will do, what most men can t, or simply won t. It s an incredible realization that although we ve been taught that men are stronger, what my mother has taught me and what many women have shown me, is that women lead lives that require ten times the strength of men, stronger lives, much more relevant, significant & meaningful lives... ten times more loyal, loving and luminous." - Keith G. Detailed? Maybe in *some* ways, maybe not in others..........2003-04-21
I am becoming more and more an XTC fanatic, and this book has certainly helped my interest grow. It's a detailed biography of the band and the individual musicians who made up XTC...
But, the details are sometimes only partial to times and events that were, it would seem, obviously much easier to chronicle.
The Swindonians that made up XTC get a thorough childhood-to-adult/musician treatment, and I just wish the happenings of the band had been as emphasized. Sure, we read all that happened, but as the band comes together and pushes onward, it seems to go by much too quickly. Barry Andrews' admission into and departure from the band goes by like a fleeting wind. Although it is made clear how the band felt about certain events and delves into controversies (i.e. the dealings with Todd Rundgren as a producer, the news of Andy's decision to stop touring, etc., etc.) it all seems jucier to me than what I get; It makes me wish Twomey'd left out some extra details about Swindon and given us, the fans, more to chew on that had to do with what we feel a connection with; The band, the individuals, the albums, etc at a time they came into *our* lives via the music & videos (which you hear almost nothing about). One very long chapter alone could've been spent on something like the Rundgren fiasco, and yet it is only one of four or five observations that are glanced over within one chapter!
I understand the "Song Stories" would possibly leave me even less satisfied. >sigh!
< Oh well, we get what we can (and as much of it as possible) about a band that we love as much as XTC! Anyone Else want to write a book that is not only more informational, but updates the lads into this next millenium, as well?
This is the sad truth.......2002-04-25
Though this biography was downplayed by the band in Song Stories, I believe it has more journalistic substance. Chris Twomey actually got to know the memebers, and was ballsy enough to be critical in his appraisal. He obviously touched a nerve, or there would be no need for Song Stories! Read it and realize they're people too, each with their own vision of what should have been.
A must for fans..........2000-05-01
If you're not a fan of XTC, this book is probably not for you. But if you are a fan of the greatest proponants of British Pop for the last 20 years, you absolutely must own a copy. It's may not be the best biography of a band ever written, but it's very good nonetheless, and the author has done his homework.
I admit I'm a fan of the worst sort. I own all their released albums, as well as a number of singles, promotional releases, and a very bad video copy of a German TV concert with terrible sound that I can still watch over and over. I find myself siting at home with the guitar absent mindedly playing "Love on a Farm Boy's Wages" or "Mayor of Simpleton" while watching TV.
If you're that kind of person, you certainly need to know all the details of the band, how it came about, the references in the songs and so forth. So what are you waiting for?
Nice chronological bio of XTC's career........1998-07-20
Chris Twomey has given a pleasing read for all XTC lovers who wish to know their story. In many respects, the band has remained unrecognized within the commercial music industry, and Twomey gives us a hint why. I wish XTC all the best for the future, and this book left me with a feeling of great respect for them. After all, their independence and willingness to follow their hearts over profitability is admirable.

Whether on-the-air or online, Howard Stern entertains millions!
Customer Reviews:
Good idea, but easily obsolete almost immediately.......2003-01-10
Stern's popularity more than justifies such a volume, but most of the sites contained within the tome are either no longer linked or made up of address strings so long as to be ungainly. It's a great idea for a book, but would have made a better website. Also lacks a lot of background of the show that other books have in spades.
For fans, but few others.
Pretty good..........2001-01-12
James has done a good job of cataloging all of the major Howard Stern-related sites on the 'net. Well worth the money!

What a pleasant surprise to find my site mentioned in this book. It is a fantastic compilation of information for those of us that are Stern addicts. A must have for the library. Thank's to the author for adding our Stern shrine... don't F' Jackie, he chats with us and gives away autographed prizes!!!
A Must Have For Stern Fans.......2000-10-05
This book is really worth buying if you a dedicated Stern listener. It has many outrageous links about the show and guests who have been on it. It really rounds out the collection of Stern books already out there.

Book Description
One of Hollywood's most enduring genres, Westerns (Fort Apache, High Noon, Shane, to name but three) dominated movie screens for over forty years. And unlike other classes of films, the Western made a smooth transition to television, with shows such as Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and The Virginian leading the way. The 24 interviews in this work take us back to a time when Westerns were tops in television ratings and box office receipts. The interviewees (Lee Aaker, John Agar, Harry Carey, Jr., Lois Hall, Ben Johnson, Sue Ane Langdon, Walter Reed, Virginia Vale, Clint Walker, and 15 others) take us behind the scenes, showing us how the Westerns were made and giving us insights about the personalities involved.

Book Description
From an American perspective, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade is arguably the most famous group of soldiers to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Hollywood screenwriter Alvah Bessie (who was later blacklisted as part of the Hollywood Ten) was a foot soldier with the Brigade and kept a riveting handwritten diary of his activities in four pocket notebooks. Carefully transcribed for the first time, these journals begin with his arrival in Spain in January of 1938, then depict his training, battlefield experiences, work on the battalion newspaper, and departure almost a year later. This never before published raw material formed the basis of Bessie's classic 1939 book Men in Battle, but in several ways these journals are even more vivid than that memoir.
Bessie's notebooks reflect the fast pace of a soldier's life as he jots down impressions, often while under fire. He and his comrades stumble into a fascist camp and must flee for their lives. They endure the shelling and bombing from the forces commanded by General Francisco Franco. Ernest Hemingway visits to provide moral support and cigarettes. The squad must lead Spanish recruits as young as fifteen into a sea of deadly fire. Bessie learns that his best friend has been killed.
Not simply a combat record, the notebooks also record songs the soldiers sang, diagrams of loyalist and fascist positions and combat formations, arguments among the men about politics and the conduct of the war, opinions of their officers, and the desire of many to go home.
Alvah Bessie's Spanish Civil War Notebooks lend a fresh perspective to one of the most important conflicts of the 1930s, and to a historically crucial opening chapter of World War II.
Book Description
Over fifty years ago,Vannevar Bush released his enormously influential report, Science, the Endless Frontier, which asserted a dichotomy between basic and applied science. This view was at the core of the compact between government and science that led to the golden age of scientific research after World War II--a compact that is currently under severe stress. In this book, Donald Stokes challenges Bush's view and maintains that we can only rebuild the relationship between government and the scientific community when we understand what is wrong with that view.
Stokes begins with an analysis of the goals of understanding and use in scientific research. He recasts the widely accepted view of the tension between understanding and use, citing as a model case the fundamental yet use-inspired studies by which Louis Pasteur laid the foundations of microbiology a century ago. Pasteur worked in the era of the "second industrial revolution," when the relationship between basic science and technological change assumed its modern form. Over the subsequent decades, technology has been increasingly science-based. But science has been increasingly technology-base--with the choice of problems and the conduct of research often inspired by societal needs. An example is the work of the quantum-effects physicists who are probing the phenomena of semiconductors from the time of the transistor's discovery after World War II.
On this revised, interactive view of science and technology, Stokes builds a convincing case that by recognizign the importance of use-inspired basic research we can frame a new compact between science and government. His conclusions have major implications for both the scientific and policy communities and will be of great interest to those in the broader public who are troubled by the current role of basic science in American democracy.
Customer Reviews:
How to make science more accountable?.......1998-09-07
This book is not about antiscientism, it is about accountibality of science funding. There are several economical myths related to the state policy of basic science funding. Two of them : "..basic research is performed without thought of practical ends" and "...basic research is the pacemaker of technological progress" as well as famous Baconian "linear model",( a sequence extending from basic science to technology: basic science - applied research - development - production and operations) are dramatically reevaluated and critizied in the reviewing book. The most important implications of agruments presented in this well written book are: a) Basic science must be accountable as any other state funding activities and based on "informed judgments of research promise and social need"; b) Progress of science and technology have "semiautonomous trajectories", therefore state investment in basic research does not provide progress in the technology and economical growth. It looks like it is a good time "to end" so-called "endless frontiers" of unaccountable spending of taxpayer's money for funding useless basic science research. Everybody who is interested in the basic science funding policy must read this excellent book. It demonstrates a difference between the economical reality and propaganda of illusions.
Book Description
Extensively revised, the second edition of this highly acclaimed book contains the most up-to-date information available on each of the world`s 96 species of swifts and treeswifts. The author includes recent findings, particularly about the neotropical swifts, and the artist has revised several plates based on new observations of these fascinating birds.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely worth the wait.......2000-04-09
I've been waiting for this second edition for over a year, but it was worth the wait. The swifts are considered by many to be among the hardest species to identify, especially in the tropics where the number of possible species is large, and the differences between species are slight. Identification was even trickier because most field guides neglect them, so it's a great help to finally have (almost) all of the subspecies of Vaux's Swift on the same plate. The species accounts are very detailed, and the range maps are superb. Also, the intruductory chapters about swift biology were quite interesting. Hopefully i'll be ready the next time i find an odd looking bird mixed with a flock of band-rumped swifts and add an ashy-tailed swift to my life list.
