Book Description
In the summer of 1973, artist Gordon Matta-Clark discovered that the city of New York occasionally auctioned improbably tiny and frequently inaccessible parcels of land created by zoning eccentricities. Fascinated by these spaces, he bought 15 of them (14 in Queens, and 1 in Staten Island) for between $25 and $75 each, photographed them, and collated the photographs with the appropriate deeds and maps. He called the project Fake Estates. Odd Lots: Revisiting Gordon Matta-Clark's "Fake Estates" further documents and advances this seminal work, and accompanies Cabinet magazine's exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art and White Columns in New York. Included here are responses to Matta-Clark's original artwork by 20 contemporary artists including Francis Als, Jimbo Blachly, Mark Dion, Sarah Oppenheimer, Dan Price, and Mierle Ukeles. Odd Lots also provides the definitive Fake Estates history, thus adding new dimension to the scholarship on this important artist*all within the spirit of collaboration and experimentation that marked Matta-Clark's short, but influential career.

Unforgettable and Haunting.......2007-08-24
When the movie "Factory Girl" (god-awful by the way) came out, it renewed my interest in this book and Edie Sedgwick. My interest in her dates back to when I first bought this book, way back in 1982. The test of a great book is that is grows richer and deeper upon re-reading. And this one does.
I first, this was simply the story of a notorious party girl. Upon re-reading (I've read this countless times), "Edie" becomes the story of how the thread of mental illness traveled through generations. This book is truly unforgettable and haunting. And I'm sure, while suffering a bout of boredom, I'll read it again. - Siouxie
P.S. Someone should give this book to Britany Spears. She's traveling the same path and she's 25; Edie was dead at 28.
BIography.......2007-04-10
Book came very quickily (within 2 days) in excellent condition. I would buy from this resource again.
and i thought my family had issues.... .......2007-02-09
yikes. what a tragic tale. incredible book. incredibly sad.
Probably The Best Book on Edie.......2006-12-08
This is THE Edie book to buy if your only going to buy one. It is an honest biographical look at her with many insights into her life from family and friends. A large portion of the beginning of the book is devoted to the Sedgwick family and their history and I feel if you really want to understand Edie you have to know about her family and their past. A great book overall, very well rounded with some great photos included as well.
probably my favorite non-fiction book.......2006-10-25
I have given this book as a gift to at least 5 people. No other book about the factory, American class structures, addiction, or celebrity comes close to "Edie" (originally titled "Edie: An American Biography"- don't know why they changed it for the paperback). Legs Mc Neill's oral history of punk rock "Please Kill Me" (another favorite) was obviously quite influenced by this book. Both the subject and structure of "Edie" are fascinating. If you like films like the Maysles brothers' "Grey Gardens", or have any interest in counter-culture history, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Customer Reviews:
I See a Darkness.......2006-08-02
For whatever reason, "American III: Solitary Man" is the only album in the American series that had a corresponding songbook published (excluding "My Mother's Hymnbook"). While a great album on its own, as the only transcribed representation of the entire series, "American III" is a bit lacking. In the song list we find no dark humor as contained in "Delia's Gone" and "The Man Who Couldn't Cry," nor the raw power of "Rusty Cage" and "Hurt." All that being said, though, this book still has a lot to offer.
First off, the arrangement of "I See a Darkness" alone is worth the price of the book. Simple and beautiful, Will Oldham's words and music are haunting. Another notable arrangement is of the gospel standard "Wayfaring Stranger." Of all the versions I've come across, this is definitely my favorite.
The arrangement for "The Mercy Seat" is a bit of a disappointment, mainly because of it's oversimplification. The recording of this song has some of that "raw power" that I mentioned, but it just doesn't translate well in written form. I understand, though, how this kind of song would be difficult to pen for a lone piano or guitar.
Another song that doesn't quite capture the recording is "One." It's a bit awkward as it incorporates the melody. This and "Solitary Man" would have worked better as accompaniment arrangements.
"Nobody," "Field of Diamonds," and "Country Trash" are other songs that are very simple, but a lot of fun to play and to sing along with.
The verdict: For all piano- or guitar-playing fans of the American series, I would definitely recommend this songbook, but don't have too high an expectation.

Jon Anderson is a national treasure. His insights are wise, his words, witty and his take on his city and its people, delightful.
Anderson Renders Chicago Life a Page Turner.......2001-04-30
Exceptionally well written, the book is both funny and compassionate, astute and compelling as it profiles some of the the people and institutions that call the third coast home. Anderson's vignettes challenge those who believe that New York City is the only REAL city in America with anyone/anything worth watching. The book will appeal to those wtih a taste for things cultural and intellectual, as it includes an interview with the late poet John Nims, as well as writing on such plances Hemingway's childhood home and the "Book Orphanage," and well as those readers drawn to the more material practices of a city, for example: "Clothes found in the Rubbish don't have to look trashy" (a Dumpster-Diving Fashion show) and "Finding the Humor in Haggis" (the dinner of the Illinois St. Andrew Society). Anderson's book provides the reader with a kind of "back-stage pass" to the city, as well as serving as a primer for how to write non-fiction that is as riveting as any novel. His strong voice and intellegence unites the peices and makes the reader want to get to know Anderson himself. I haven't enjoyed a work of non-fiction this much since "naked" by David Sedaris.

Book Description
Family Diversity and Family Policy describes the dimensions of diversity which characterize the contemporary American family and discusses the implications for public policy and associated intervention programs linked to this diversity. The authors contend that if the programs and policies available to support families are to be most useful, they need to reflect the diversity of the families they intend to help.
Beginning with a discussion of the historical and contemporary context of the American family,
Family Diversity and Family Policy focuses on child poverty and argues that this topic may be usefully studied within the context of developmental systems theory. This theory systematically links the development of individuals to variations in their physical and social ecology, and is used as a framework for discussing:
- Contemporary challenges faced by parents charged with rearing adolescents, and the familial and societal issues that arise when the adolescents being reared are parents themselves.
- Current policy issues that arise from welfare debates in the United States and from recently-enacted welfare reform legislation.
- The importance for our nation of developing a comprehensive national youth policy.
The authors draw implications for the design, delivery, and evaluation of diversity-sensitive policies and programs for families and youth, and offer a vision of how to link scholars, policy makers, and community members in multi-professional and multi-institutional collaborations promoting the positive development of American families and youth.
Family Diversity and Family Policy is relevant to scholars and policy makers interested in human development, particularly of children and adolescents. In addition, it should be essential reading for practitioners and policy makers in government, private industry, and public and private social service organizations.

The late Bruce Chatwin carved out a literary career as unique as any writer's in this century: his books included In Patagonia, a fabulist travel narrative, The Viceroy of Ouidah, a mock-historical tale of a Brazilian slave-trader in 19th century Africa, and The Songlines, his beautiful, elegiac, comic account of following the invisible pathways traced by the Australian aborigines. Chatwin was nothing if not erudite, and the vast, eclectic body of literature that underlies this tale of trekking across the outback gives it a resonance found in few other recent travel books. A poignancy, as well, since Chatwin's untimely death made The Songlines one of his last books.

Annoying interjections.......2007-05-22
The first sentence sounded promising:"In Alice Springs - a grid of scorching streets where men in long white socks were forever getting in and out of Land Cruisers - I met a Russian who was mapping the sacred sites of the Aboriginals." And indeed what follows in the next thirty or so chapters is a very readable and insightful travelogue of a British (author? archaelogist? historian?) "going bush" with Arkady Volchok, trying to learn about the mythical Aboriginal songlines. Not understandably, then, the author throws in bits and pieces of the protagonist's notebooks, which all more or less anthropological citations and thoughts from very different sources. The concept reminded me a bit of the motif in "The English Patient", where Almasy carries a copy of Herodotus' The Histories with him, adding his own notes and observations. Fortunately, in Ondaatje's novel, this remains a motif which does not disrupt the plot itself. With "The Songlines", however, I found myself flicking impatiently through the interjection-pages in order to get back to the story.
Bruce Chatwin wrote half a book..........2007-04-17
The Songlines really captured my attention. Human ecology, cultural anthropology, human evolution, cultural imperialism, Songlines, Native Australians ("aborigines"), travels... this is a book with information about a people and a place. I enjoyed the flow and pace of the story, and I hope I learned the reality of Native Australian culture.
However, Bruce Chatwin chose to use this book to publish assorted observations, quotes, and reflections from other travels. For me (me), they affected the flow of his storytelling, my ability to focus on the theme - Australia, not nomads - and the ending. Perhaps this is a style thing, and I don't know if Chatwin applies this style in his other books.
Didn't work for me. I wanted a conclusion to his original story.
Aboriginals in Australia.......2007-03-13
In Alice Springs the narrator called Bruce meets Arkady Volchok, an Australian citizen who is mapping the sacred sites of the Aboriginals. Arkady is fascinated by them, by their grit and tenacity and their ways of dealing with white people. Arkady speaks a couple of their languages and he is often astounded by their intellectual vigour, their memory and their capacity to survive.
It was during his time as a schoolteacher in Walbiri that Arkadi learned of the labyrinth of invisible pathways which meander all over Australia and are known to Europeans as Songlines - a way for Aboriginals to sing out the name of everything that crosses their path during their wanderings: birds, animals, plants, rocks, waterholes and so sing the world in existence.
When a route is suggested for a new Alice to Darwin railway line, Arkady's job is to identify the traditional landowners, to drive them over their old hunting grounds and to get them to reveal which rock or soak or ghost-gum is the work of a Dreamtime hero. Bruce is happy to join Arkady and to spend some time "out bush".
The reader of this novel learns a lot about Australia and the Aboriginals. The plot and the characters however are a bit thin. One finds it hard to sympathise with the Aboriginal figures appearing in the story. What they have to say and the way they express themselves amounts to practically nothing. It seems as though they need the white people to tell their stories and traditions.
Best of the best.......2006-10-02
This is the kind of writing/reflecting many people do while travelling and is not a "how to" type of travel guide. I've recommended this book to several thoughtful people, given it to many thoughtful teens as they begin to self-discover, and re-read the book twice. VERY nice writing, good thoughts, great ideas about humans.
The Songlines.......2005-12-17
As i never wanted to go to Australia, i have to say that after reading this book i have not changed my mind, but it is not a point. It is not a book about traveling in Australia. It is more a book about walking, for example. As i like walking, i have found in this book so many great examples of what the walking is about, it is not just moving from one point on the Earth to another, it is also philosophy. And so on...this book is highly recommended for those who knows what the word "travel" means. In present time many people travel, but just a few ones deserve to be called "traveller". Bruce Chatwin is among them.
Product Description
Bruce Chatwin is a self-proclaimed "anti-archaeologist" most intersted in "those who trod lightly upon the earth and left little or no trace of their passing". The Songlines is the result of many journeys, in Australia and elsewhere... [written] as an imaginary dialogue which takes place on an imaginary journey."

Book Description
From simple email to sophisticated online marketing, Net Law: How Lawyers Use the Internet shows how the solo practitioner or the large law firm can turn the Net into an effective and efficient tool. Through stories from those who've set up pioneering legal Net sites, attorney Paul Jacobsen explains how lawyers can successfully integrate the Internet into their practices, sharing lessons these "early adopters" have learned.
In this book, you'll read about a law firm that reports its Web site gets more than 40,000 visitors a week, resulting in 6,000 subscribers to its online newsletter. The firm claims that more than two-thirds of its clients come to them directly through their Internet Web site.Net Law shows what you might do to get similar results.
Firms with Internet connections not only have the yet-to-be-proven advantages of a homepage to tout their firm's virtues and services, but the practical advantages offered by email and access to legal research resources on the Net.
In Net Law, the author walks the reader through the process of getting connected, to using the Net for research, to marketing online. Net Law draws heavily from the real-life experiences of lawyers who were early adopters of the Net and have successfully integrated it into their practices. These early adopters share their experiences and the lessons they've learned. They talk about what works online -- and what doesn't, separating the reality of the Net from the hype and hysteria that often surrounds this new medium.
The wealth of the Internet can only be fully tapped by those professionals who actually use it. Net Law's author takes the reader step by step through the issues, beginning with examples of firms that have already experienced the power of being connected. He walks beginners through two chapters of Internet basic training before moving on to the business of turning a Net connection into a working asset for the firm.
One of the biggest advantages lawyers get with a Net connection is the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients over great distances. Lawyers interviewed in the book tell of exchanging 200-page legal briefs with other attorneys in other cities, allowing them to meet tight filing deadlines they would have otherwise missed. The book also deals with the issue of privacy and security. Email is not as secure as traditional mail for highly confidential client communication. How do lawyers protect themselves and their clients' information in this new medium? Net Law explains how lawyers are addressing this serious issue.
Research was noted by many of the lawyers interviewed as one of the Net's key resources. With many university law libraries now online and recent case law and court decisions becoming available online, attorneys are finding research time and budgets shrinking thanks to a simple and cheap Internet connection.
Unlike other professions that can simply advertise their services to the public, ethical considerations limit what attorneys feel is appropriate in marketing legal services. The author spends considerable time exploring the do's and don'ts of online legal marketing and shares the experiences of those who have been both successful and unsuccessful. The author offers examples of law firms that range from modest to aggressive use of the Net. Includes CD-ROM with Internet software and limited free online time.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......1999-03-16
You can't beat having a strong presence online, if you are a self-employed contracts kind of lawyer. This book helped me drum up decent business. Glad I got it. I only wish it came with more online examples.
interesting, for lawyers even much.......1998-08-07
Apart from introductory information it contains many interesting views, also from lawyers' own practice. These personal, short, "interviews" with real life persons make this book that interesting.
Worth the bucks to pay.

An Invitation to Italy within a Fascinating Story.......2006-06-21
What an incredible labor of love and a fantastic story! Carmen Via is a tour de force work that took me simultaneously through the author's life in vivid flash back sequences, and through the rich and multi-layered Italian history in a forward motion as well. Populated with fantastical and charming characters, including an actual person named Carmen Via, the story is not a solitary note. It reminds me of Gregorian Chant - many voices interweaving, mingling and parting, rising and falling like waves incoming, but always flowing into a harmonious yet completely complex whole. So many levels, so dense with observations and myth, with human frailty and great feats of daring - a refreshing look at our western heritage that is quite massive and yet detailed in its view.
The margin references that grace the edges of many pages, great chunks of classics like the Odyssey, tie into the story in ways that are serendipitous and a bit surreal. A huge web of intricate facts and memories - of places known and unknown, of poetry and history, of universal feelings and bloodlines running deep, of magic and comets falling through us, and of songs - songs we hear, sung by the earth, the trees, the hills and valleys and by the very ghosts who live with us. All of this magic conspires together with deft wordsmithing and acute perceptions to create the Map of Imagination. Deep sensitivity to the grace of history, and the role of devilish activity throughout, recalled the nature of place and its power to form and inform the daily behavior of its inhabitants. Once on a trip to Sedona, Arizona the guide took us into the desert hills where the magnetic fields are so intense that you can feel the humming in the air pierce your body and thrum your bones. The earth does sing, and we mortals do respond.
What an incredible gift to all who read it - a classical, but personal look at our reality. I even found myself nodding in agreement when the author spoke of the damage being done by the speed of life and modern media. Our daughter did not have television in her life for the first 14 years and she marvels at the strange commonality of thought it breeds, and the void of imagination and the creative processes. Unfortunately, many do not have a good grounding in mythology and the classics, and lack these essential cultural reference points. The author reminds us of the bountiful heritage that is the foundation supporting Italy and the whole of the western world.
Carmen Via was so much more than I had heard, and overwhelming in its scope to read and comprehend. The kind of book that should be savored. Carmen Via is a veritable 20 course meal, paired with gorgeous wines, and more, for the curious and courageous reader. The photographs, in black and white by Rolf Horn, are evocative of the magic within and compliment the language with strong visuals. This book is literally, an engraved invitation to visit Italy, and a delight to read.

Book Description
Meg, AOL's "Insider," is a popular figure on America Online, the host of virtually all of AOL's "Help" areas. Based on a real person (Miriam E. Grossman, a project leader in the AOL Network Programming division), she is lively, casual, and "in the know."The Insider's Guide to America Online is an exciting new book that captures, for the first time, an insider's view of the nation's number one online service. It is also the first AOL book based around a personality, one that AOL members will recognize. And, perhaps most important, it is one of the first books to address the intermediate to advanced user of AOL, and computer services in general. Basic, introductory material is readily available to AOL members and potential members. However, the vast majority of America Online books are bland "how to get started" manuals, and most assume that their readers are beginners. The Insider's Guide improves and augments this reference category by offering a savvy, inside track guide to AOL. The Insider's Guide to America Online covers the entire service, from the latest technical tips to the coolest content areas. Chapters are organized by topic (Sports, Entertainment, etc.) so that readers can use the book as an AOL directory. It also contains a preview and introduction to the latest 4.0 software, the next generation of AOL.

The Insider's Guide to AOL is more than just a beginners guide. Among other things it shows you how to create your own Web site. Covers AOL 4.0 and is a guide to everything that is useful in AOL.

Customer Reviews:
It is like visiting a wildlife refuge for a day.......1999-02-17
Kit Chubb's witty sense of humor comes through perfectly in this book about some of the most fascinating and incredible wildlife rescues and rehabilitation stories found anywhere. It is easy to understand the brain behind the phenomenon that is Kitt Chubb and a day in the life of the Avian Care and Research Foundation.
