Great for the stereo enthusiast.......2005-02-27

This book is composed of two parts, one is a tradtitional hard bound book and the other is a book-like folder that contains the stereographs that are examined in the book along with a brown plastic viewer. The two halves are contained in a slipcase, all of which have similar covering to make a nice looking set.

The stereographs are typical litho-style cards reprinted from the original cards but are interesting just the same. The viewer is often broken at the hinge in used copies of this title but any viewer may be used for viewing.

The book discusses the history of the stereograph briefly and then goes into an exploration of subject types, each of which has a reprint litho-stereograph included. The depth of coverage is not overly great but the book does contain some nice images and is an interesting history of the subject.

I would suggest this title for the stereo enthusiast as an interesting read but not as a reference book.

I started reading this book in Target while my kids looked at videos and couldn't leave without buying it. I like this author's style...she puts you right in the mansion with her. I could really relate to her thoughts and experiences. A good read.

Met the author--fantastic lady.......2007-07-29

I found out about this book through the author's sister. Suzanne gave me a copy. I read this book in 24 hrs. I have been a nanny now for 8 years and can relate to some of suzanne's struggles. I also nannied for "the wealthy" and got caught up in a world I never knew existed. This book is right on target and displays the hard work, and frustration that our job holds. THe book is funny, and also heartbreaking. I highly recommend this to any nanny, sitter or daycare provider. I guarantee you will relate on one level or another.

Nanny-nanny-boo-boo........2007-07-04

After I finished 'You'll Never Nanny in This Town Again', I wondered if the true purpose of this book was to give a raspberry (or the finger) to her first employer (Michael Ovitz) and have the last word. Although it was, at times, clever and witty, I found Suzanne Hansen to be a bit self-promoting, and she was definitely still resentful of the Ovitzes, even though it has been many years. I have no doubt the Ovitzes were condescending and indifferent, but it seemed there was nothing they did that went unmentioned by Suzanne Hansen as proof of their implacability (especially concerning the wife, Judy). Her love of their children was her excuse for not quitting, but this caused her to end up resenting the children as well as the parents. She painted many people in an unflattering light in this book, including her ex-boyfriend and some of the other domestic help at her various places of nannying, and even though she gave kudos to Debra Winger for actually raising her child without a nanny and Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman for being decent human beings, she always had to have at least one negative anecdotal story about them so that even nice people don't seem too nice in Hollywood. The book seemed a bit disorganized at first, and because her nannying days were in the '80s, it really felt dated. Suzanne Hansen was sometimes irreverent and self-deprecating, and that made for some hilarious moments, so it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fantastic either. I found 'You'll Never Nanny in This Town Again' to be entertaining and a bit fun, but for light-hearted reading, there are some better choices out there.

This book was a really good book to read. It was quick and gave you a look into being a Hollywood Nanny.

Prospective Authors Need Not Apply.......2007-05-13

Suzanne Hansen's book is about as good as a tell-all book can get without actually telling all. It might also be regarded as a Cautionary tale to celebrities who seek to hire Nannies.

Hansen's wry sense of humor adds to the entertainment value of this book. She is able to recall incidents with a self-depracating laugh at her own expense. A trip to the beauty salon at Judy Ovitz' insistence yields catastrophic results and Hanson woefully recalls the final insult - an invoice that amounts to almost a full week's nanny pay.

While Hansen stuns her readers with mini anecdotes bearing witness to Michael Ovitz' commanding personality, it is in stark contrast to her own humbling position of servitude in the family.

As she describes her brief time working for the free-spirited, deep thinking Debra Winger, the reader vicariously shares in Hansen's relief at being treated as somewhat of an equal.

The minor characters in Suzanne Hansen's book allow for the occasional detour into name-dropping territory. In addition to Hansen's infrequent contacts with real movie stars, her close friend, a fellow nanny named Mandie, delights in regaling Hanson with stories of the VIPs she encounters and the places she travels, all perks of the job. Hansen's green-eyed monster gets the best of her at times like these but they are understandable.

By the time Hanson is placed with her third family, Rhea Perlman and Danny DiVito, one gets the sense that her career as a nanny is coming to a final act. As her confidence grows, so does her vague dissatisfaction with the job. As the charm of nannying loses its sparkle, Hansen is forced to re-evaluate her future role as a Nanny and to address her resentment towards some of the peripheral characters in her story. It becomes evident, as the story progresses, that a great Nanny is born and not made and that Hansen, despite three valiant attempts, is perhaps better suited to writing than caring for celebrity offspring.

Not the typical Napoleon biography.......2006-02-25

Swords Around a Throne is not your typical Napoleon book. Elting concentrates on topics which MAY rate a sentence or paragraph in other biographies. Elting concentrates on the different divisions of the Grand Armée including uniforms, in-depth looks at his marshals and the navy instead of regurgitating the different battles he fought. Swords Around a Throne is a good change of pace to the other biographies of Napoleon as it provides a different aspect to the Napoleonic Wars and his empire. Well worth the time to read.

Generalization.......2006-02-01

The problem with thick books that try to capture large subjects is that they must generalize and leave out a lot of data, and here there is no difference. If you are looking of a general overview of the Grande Armee during more then two decades of the French First Republic and Empire, this book will inform. However it is not meant to provide or be a definitive statement on any of the topics discussed in the chapters. Its a guide, rather then a scholarly work. This is particularly true where armies other then French are discussed, or where equal space has been given to its largest corps, the Infantry or Cavalry.
Other works dealing with specific areas should be consulted after readin this work.

Informative and Interesting.......2005-11-23

This is an excellent book, both informative and interesting. Even while discussing rather dry topics, the author manages to work in humourous anecdotes or observations.

It is important to understand that this book is not a narrative history of Napoleon's campaigns--rather, it is broken down into chapters which describe various aspects of Napoleon's army--the guard, foreign units, allied units, supply organization, cavalry, artillery, and many many others; for each chapter/topic, the author describes the pre-Napoleonic context, as well as developments under Napoleon.

Entertaining and informative.......2005-07-19

Col. Elting's inimitable writing style is sorely missed. Unfortunately, he died a few years ago (which several reviewers will be saddened to learn). He wrote with such lively humor and energy, that he always entertained while he informed. Does the book contain a few flaws? Sure it does, and they have been mentioned in the other reviews. The author's approach, strictly speaking, is not what would be described as "scholarly." Elting is a bit of a francophile, but perhaps acts as counterbalance to the anglophilia that dominates most English-language work on the Napoleonic period. (Owen Connelly, another American, is one of the most objective writers covering the period). Overall, Swords Around A Throne surpasses most other studies of the "Grande Armee" if only by merit of Elting's irreplaceble prose.

If you read one book on Napoleon this must be it!.......2003-11-09

'One quick blow and the wars over' with these words Napoleon led his army from the banks of the English Channel towards Austria, towards a small town named Austerlitz.

This book is quite simply the best and more detailed thorough account of Napoleon and his grand army. It details such notables as General Ney, who fought Wellington in Spain and was latter suspected of treason by Napoleon. It details the invasion the russia, the 'napoleon at bay' campaigns of 1814 and the final showdown at waterloo. Great biogrpaical sketches are made of all Napoleons commanders and their various campaigns. Simply an excellent lucid account.

While it would be easy to fill a sizable bookcase with books published in 2004 that were highly critical of George W. Bush, few of those authors carry the gravity of Senator Robert Byrd, who first came to congress when Truman was president. In Losing America, the veteran Democrat offers scathing criticism of Bush, whom he sees as undeserving of the office, unfit to lead, "callow and reckless," and "incredibly dangerous." Besides criticizing the much-discussed rise of the neoconservative philosophy, Byrd bemoans what he sees as the erosion of constitutionally mandated separation of powers. While many of his objections are colored with a high degree of personal dudgeon over perceived disrespect for him and his branch of government, he uses well-reasoned legal and historical arguments to illustrate his concerns. In Byrd's descriptions of encounters with Bush, the president is remarkably similar to the incurious, distracted cipher of contemporary books from Richard Clarke and Paul O'Neill, and though a certain level of decorum is generally practiced among governmental figures, the level of vitriol in his criticisms indicates that Byrd must either be confident he'll never need to be on Bush's good side or is simply too furious to care. As one might expect from a man accustomed to having people listen closely to him, Byrd has an ego; he tells of advising freshman senator Hillary Clinton to become a "work horse" and not a "show horse" and he is pleased when she chooses the latter (thanks to him, he indicates). Byrd is also a bit long-winded in making his points, often launching into lengthy historical anecdotes as a means of comparing and contrasting Bush to his predecessors. But his thoughts are not snarky op-eds from a pundit; they are well earned, compellingly expressed, and come from a politician much more experienced than most. --John Moe

A gorilla overfed on peanuts.......2006-10-14

An enlightening book on the machinations of political power and its eventual abuse. Robert Byrd has given credence that politics is all about power and when it is seized all forms of deviousness will be carried out in order to preserve that power. The book also highlights that most politicians in a democratic nation do not have the wellbeing of their citizens as their primary concern - it was never the concern during the Roman Empire and it isn't during the current American Empire. Robert Byrd also calls attention to the apathy of the US citizen as a main cause in the election of the inept and inarticulate warmongering George W Bush. But this apathy is a pitiful worldwide problem, which politicians exploit to the utmost.

Losing America: Confronting a Reckless and Arrogant Presidency.......2006-09-27

After reading a book like this you realize what an arrogant jerk the author is. Sen. Byrd must have forgotten the Clinton Presidency and clearly has lost touch with the "Real America". His open hatred for the President is plainly exposed and the book seems to simply be a means for him to have a podium where he can offer his blatant hatred and make it seem "true" simply because it was printed.

Why does Hatred get published so easily in our country? What this man says about our President would have been unheard of even 50 years ago about a President.

An Honest Assessment That Should Make You Mad Enough to Act.......2006-08-19

Make no mistake, Senator Robert Byrd does not present an unbiased view of the Bush Administration in "Losing America," but he doesn't claim to...and doesn't need to. By presenting a detailed, point-by-point assessment of how Bush and his Republican minions have systematically (and self-centeredly) worked to undermine the principles upon which America was founded, Byrd does make a very honest, verifiable presentation.

Two key differences between this book and most political books these days are that (1) Robert Byrd still knows how to be a statesman, even in print, and (2) he is one of the few who is still focused on trying to do what's best for the United States and ALL Americans, not just special interest groups and lobbyists who give him money. Read the book -- it shows.

"Losing America" is both a bit frightening, in how clearly it spells out the actions and results of what the Bushies have been doing, and inspirational, in how it calls upon Americans as a group to work together to prevent the loss of many freedoms and practices that made this country great in the first place.

For example, Byrd points out the many limitations on executive branch power...AND the many ways Bush has worked to evade those limits. The top way Bush & Co. has done this, of course, has been through the declaration of a constant state of war, abusing Americans' own patriotism to create a police state in which he can declare that anything he wants to do is for our protection and, ipso facto, legal. Even when it doesn't really protect us at all.

This has been augmented, of course, by having the right wing media call anyone who questions the wisdom, competence, or legality of Bush policies unAmerican, traitors, and "cut-and-runners." And, yes, that includes other media outlets, which are now owned by large corporations that bury stories because they don't want to be called those names.

The good news is that people are finally waking up to the fact that these abuses and manipulations of our government and our constitution aren't just hurting "someone else," they are hurting all Americans. If you can stomach the details, this is a great book to learn them...and a great education in what can be done to set things right again.

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED FOR EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN.......2006-08-13

Byrd writes with an authority wisdom, experience and knowledge of our now ignored Constitution and government that is rare in our fallen times. He writes precisely with proofs and evidence, unlike popular polemicists like Ms. Coulter. He writes at times brilliantly, and at all times for the greater good of our nation. Unfortunately he will not be read due to misconceptions about the man himself. We dismiss his essential message by killing the messenger. Yet he has so much to teach us, about our nation and its foundations, about the ideals for which our founders fought and died, about the laws which once made us effective and even great.

In this book he arises as a biblical prophet to reawaken and to recall us to our national origins and purpose and processes, away from the divergence which damages us so deeply now. He specifies the harm being done, and why we must care. Please, for our own children's sake, read this book, and read it to them.

An Excellent Argument about How the Current Administration Ignores the Separation of Powers.......2006-08-05

I found Senator Byrd's book to be an excellent argument about how the current administration clearly ignores our Constitution's design for a separation of powers. He details how Mr. Bush and his appointees have railroaded Congress, while Congress as a whole sits by and does nothing to stop them. Senator Byrd has been one of the few voices of reason to point out what has been happening these past six years. I hope that people will read his book and understand what is happening to our country. It does not matter what your politics are, whether you agree with Senator Byrd's or Mr. Bush's party or history, when you look at what is happening to the disappearance of our checks and balances. Thank you for writing this book, Senator Byrd!
