Of Arawak descent, the Taino - whose ancestors migrated to the Caribbean from the Amazon Basin in South America during the 6th century - were the first people encountered by Christopher Columbus. Although they ceased to exist as an autonomous society within 60 years of the arrival of Spanish colonizers, the Taino - skilled agriculturists and navigators and accomplished weavers, potters, and carvers - developed a complex political, religious, and social system, and made a substantial contribution to the biological, cultural, and linguistic makeup of large areas of the Caribbean. To this date, Caribbean communities in the Antilles and in New York and other large American cities exhibit the survival of Taino practices in their worldviews, religious beliefs, language, music, and food.

Great work, but outdated in some respects.......2007-06-27

"Taíno: Pre-Columbian Art and Culture from the Caribbean" is a great collection of some of the most beautiful objects of the Caribbean Taíno. It is a necessity for any who is interested in Greater Antillean Pre-Columbian history for this reason.
Still, for the more specialized audience some of the papers will appear to be a bit outdated and therefore it is not a recommended read for archaeologists that hope to abstract some information that can be of help in a wider archaeological debate from its pages. On the other hand, even over a decade after its initial publication, there are not yet any works that are so widely available that give such a good introduction to Taíno culture.

I consider this book the most complete on the Taino's art and crafts. The collection presented here was gathered from all over the world and represents all the islands of the Greater Antilles. Yet, it is not merely a "coffee table book" full of great pictures. The authors of the essays included represent some of the most important researchers of the Caribbean. Ricardo E. Alegría's essay "An Introduction to Taino Culture and History" is the best summary of this ancient people's way of life. This was a real achievement for the Museo del Barrio and Monacelli Press.

Here, the interested reader will find an unparalleled account of a great people sadly wiped out by greed. This book is the foremost reference on the people and culture from the carribean. Nowhere can there be found a more complete account. No other book can compare to what one can learn from this book. This is by far the best book I have found on the subject of precolumbian culture in the Carribean!

The book is based on El Museo del Barrio which resurrected the Taino culture for native New Yorkers in the late 1970's. It is a must read on the Taino people and culture. The color prints of the artifacts and the English translation of archive material brings one closer to what the Taino people were.

I am a beginner with Avid and was daunted by all the different and options available to me. Monohan's book was just what I needed. I am currently giong through the book from A to Z, which gives me an overview of all the options and work-methods the program has. Even though I allready had set up my workspace, this book gave me some interesting tips. Even though I had allready developed a workflow for my previous projects, I learned some new options by reading this book.

Interestingly, serving as a guide from a to Z is not where Monohan excells. It should be used as an index to all the available options from this program. Want to know how to find those audio-peaklevels? How to get rid of that nested alpha-channel? Or you want to remember that trick in lassoing to trim mode? Use the index or the table of contents and you'll find what you're looking for in no time.

Great value for its price!

It's a Manual .......2005-08-09

I wish I just had the manual that came with the program. Often times you find the book more so telling you what it can do rather than how to actually do it. All in all, with it's help and a little time spent with the editing system you can figure this program out. It doesn't stray too far from the other major non-linear editing systems.

This purchase was my second of this book & CD series, as I wore out the last CD. I also have, and use, the DVD available that accompanies this series. I purchased them somewhere between STICK CONTROL and Joe Porcaro's DRUM SET METHOD, and they're part of my routine now. I've only been playing for a little over 2 years, and nothing could replace the best teacher in Atlanta, JACK DUKES, but Jack was the one who showed me this Tommy Igoe course. It covers a little of everything and a lot of some of it, and it's helped me to progress at an accelerated pace and find the things I like most to play. The grooves, minus the drums, are long-playing, longer than some of the other practice CDs I've used that only have short sections. I was 51 when my husband bought me the drum set, so I have to learn fast.

Great resource for serious drummers. I found it a great resource to learn new beats and perfect the old ones. Nothing worse that having a drummer that only knows a few grooves.

I specially like the "world groove" section. I understand the chances of my band asking me to play a Mambo, Meregue, Salsa or Mozambique are slim, but I can use elements from these grooves elsewhere. Definitely recommend.

This book is full of great beats for all levels. The CD has excellent tracks for developing feel with a band and leaves plenty of room for improv. I highly recommend this book for beginning players all the way to a pro that wants a chart reading challenge.

I would recommend this product but not by itself. You really need the DVD too, because the music is from the lessons but in full length. I'm diggin the variety of grooves and there's something for every drummer whether your just starting out or you think your ready to go on tour!

Nice Practice Tool.......2007-01-10

I've been a drummer for about 20 years now and I found this CD/Book combo to be a very useful practice tool. It starts out providing basic rudiments, fills... which increase in complexity as you move through the book. The book and exercises end with 4 or 5 "charts" which you are required to follow in order to play along with the companion CD. These are not simple songs and the exercises are quite lengthy. The CD/book combo covers a variety of musical styles, tempos and groove. I recommend it for intermediate to advanced percussionists.

Fell Short.......2003-04-19

I don't claim to be a scholar ('cuz I'm not), but I know the book left out one thing I was looking for; a detailed account of Dick Crookback's demise. This was only glossed over by a line or two. Otherwise, there are some good images of actual reference material (i.e. pics of armor, effigies, period paintings, etc). Turner obviously has a mastery of depicting arms and armor, and has a nice out-of-doors look to his paintings, but I was a bit nonplussed at his portrayal of fighting men in action. They all look way too nonchalant, even when swinging a pole-axe, or as cavalry about to meet head-on.

First of all, some aspects of the review by Mr. Forczyk are true. But the shortage not absence of historical facts is normal in medieval warfare history (and in the history of warfare in general).To prove this you just have to look of the battles of Crecy and Agincourt which both have many versions (one of the most popular being the English longbow-armed superheroes slay the effiminate French knights despite beeing outnumbered 3 or 6:1).An author who statesthat he couldn't make out the actual positions of army contingents ,or exact casualty figures( which nobody counted then )is generally more worth than one who tells us at length about things where he has no resonable knowledge .The rest of that rewiew is nonfactual.The advance of forces,deployment and battle are dealt with in 45 pages.And this "brief dynastic skirmish" changed English history by a great degree, basically from the medieval routed Plantagenet realm to the renaissance Tudor monarchy.It is true that the battle is quickly told:1.deployment in 3 divisons.2.hail of arrows.3.men at arms charge the center of gravity of the enemy battlelines.But the book covers the background of the conflict, political powerplays, the commanders and the weaponry used very well for the space availible.All in all it is a good introduction to the "Wars of the Roses" seen from the end of it.To say something about the artwork:it is phenomenal.The pictures gave the book a great deal of livelines.

A Vague Account of a Minor Dynastic Skirmish.......2000-06-07

This is not one of the better of the Osprey Campaign series. The biggest weakness is the absence of detailed historical facts about the course of the 1485 Bosworth campaign, which encourages the author to extrapolate from a handful of facts. When the author depicts three possible different locations on the battle maps for the vital contingents of the Stanleys, it only serves to reinforce the vagueness of detail available on this battle. The actual fighting is covered in less than 10 pages out of 95. Furthermore, why a brief dynastic skirmish of a handful of Englishmen in the 15th Century merits a campaign title is never convincingly explained. There is very little actual detail throughout and this is further diminished by a writing style that moves at a sluggish pace. Information on order of battle and casualties is negligible. This is the kind of book that makes one want to read French, not English, history.

The FAIR TAX is another method used to further enrich the wealthy and change OUR GOVERNMENT INTO AN ARISTOCRACY.

If a family is bringing in millions of dollars and purchases only necessities, its Power (money) grows rapidly. After it accumulates a large amount (money) it can purchase vast capital (machinery, land, buildings) at once and have true Power over many people. That is an oligarchy (the conservatives are working to attain it and dismantle the New Deal), which can turn into an aristocracy. Inheritance to those who do not deserve such largesse promulgates that dangerous threat to our form of government. As clearly shown by George W Bush, inheritors can wreak terrible damage on this country.

Progressive taxation, instituted by judicious leaders, has a prime purpose of keeping the WEALTH GAP at a reasonable level to prevent revolution by those unable to take part in our country's bonanza. That developing bloodbath today is obvious in our criminal class, which, due to most citizens' greed and selfishness, lives the only way it knows how, as predators.

Yes, it's a book on economics and taxes, but Mr. Boortz helps to make it an entertaining and easily understood book. While it pretty much explains the theory of the fair tax in full and is a great place to start, it's a good idea to do your own research into the fair tax, studying the pros and cons. Just be sure that you understand the basics, or else you may get confused by anti-fair tax information that gets an idea wrong or blatantly lies...

The Cure for a Disease Known as Income Taxes.......2007-10-03

In this book, Boortz and Linder discuss the abolishment of the income tax. Under this system, wages would not be taxed at all. As an alternative to raise revenue for the government, they propose a national sales tax. The goal is revenue neutral so that same amount of revenue would be collected to run the government.

This would allow the individual to choose when they paid tax. So those who save and invest money rather than spending all of it, would come out much better.

The proposed sales tax rate would be around 23%. While this may sound high, one should keep in mind that no tax would have been withheld from his or her paycheck. For example, say that the average household income for America which is approximately $40,000 a year were not taxed. This would mean the Joneses get to take home all $40,000 of that hard earned income. As it stands today, they are probably only taking home around $32,000 assuming a 20% income tax rate and not considering state, Social Security, or Medicare taxes.

As a component of the national sales tax, they propose that a certain poverty level determination of say $10,000 which would be considered the bare minimum for a person to survive on and each person would receive a "prebate" of $2,300 per year paid in monthly installments. This would significantly help those on the low end of the income spectrum and actually result in additional money to spend on essentials such as food, clothing, and housing. It would also avoid the potential disparities which could occur with a food exemption if the wealthy purchased steak and lobster or other such expensive food items.

Additionally, it would take many of the inefficiencies out of the current system in that each time there is a touch on producing a good or service, income tax is charged. For example, when you buy a loaf of bread, the business who produced the seeds, the farmer who grew the wheat, the mill, the bakery, the trucking company, and the grocery store all pay income tax on their portion of the bread production. By taking the income tax away, the loaf of bread would subsequently be much cheaper (estimated around 25%) from the reduction of built in income tax for a product. (This assumes that businesses will not pay income tax. There would be many rules set up to prevent people setting up "businesses" to evade taxes.)

The Fair Tax also has the benefit of helping prevent tax evasion. Under the current system, there are millions upon millions of dollars of unreported income every year which are not taxed. This could occur in anything from illegal trades such as selling drugs on the street to the legal trades of wait staff or any industry in which cash is used to pay for goods or services but not reported. Every time these dollars were spent by the individuals, however, they would be taxed so this revenue which is currently lost would be collected.

It would additionally get rid of the estimated $265 billion spent annually to comply with the tax code. This is not to mention the 100s of thousands of hours that would be freed up to engage in more productive and enjoyable pursuits.

Economists estimate that in the first year of its implementation the economy would grow by 10.5%. Foreign companies would also have incentive to build factories in the U.S. to take advantage of the eliminated inherent cost included as mentioned in the bread example.

Excellent reading to get yourself ready to defend the concept when it is attacked by the tax and spend crowd in Washington. It is a quick read and makes a great deal of sense.

A plan for the rich (1.5 *s).......2007-09-23

If you want a fundamental principle of government/society discussed with right-wing, shock-radio bluster, this is your book. Though a congressman is the co-author, the book is simply a continuation of the rant that has been heard daily on a local radio station in Atlanta for over thirty years. We learn early in the book that the passage of the Sixteenth Amendment in 1913 enabling the collection of income taxes is akin to the devastation of Pearl Harbor or the destruction of the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001. The IRS is no less than the enemy of the people, fulfilling a Marxian prophecy. You get the general idea.

One would like to think that anyone proposing a fundamental overhaul of our taxation system would first lay out a philosophy of taxation, which must be consistent with a broader philosophy of society and government. You won't find that in this book. The principal author has consistently exhibited a decided lack of social concern and understanding.

The so-called fair-tax is a twenty-three percent consumption tax in lieu of apparently all other federal level taxes: income, dividends, social security, Medicare, corporate, etc. [State taxes don't seem to be addressed.] It has long been held that the wealthy in a nation should pay taxes at a higher rate than ordinary citizens. The wealthy benefit far more than most from government. In fact they have a huge advantage over the rest of us by having an overwhelming say in the choice of those who occupy governmental offices and the consequent setting of policies and decisions. In essence, the rich get richer. They should pay for that largesse.

Consumption taxes are by far the most regressive of taxes that can be imposed. The median earner in this nation spends every dollar on necessary items. The rich do not. In fact a large portion of their income goes towards investments and wealth production. By exempting income, dividends, and interest from taxation, the so-called fair tax would simply exacerbate a tax scheme already weighted to the rich. The tax rate for the rich would plummet; for the poor suckers taken in by the fair-tax scheme, their tax rate would maximize.

The one thing that the book gets right is the necessity of changing the tax system. The loop holes for the rich are disgraceful. The idea that corporations don't really pay taxes is certainly a reality. The book complains about class warfare, not about the one that the powerful have been waging for decades. But the one where the ordinary citizen wants the powerful to get the boot off of his or her neck. But then that merely reflects where the hearts of the author are.

The fair-tax scheme proposed is utterly useless. It seems to assume that consumption is definitive of life - there is no larger context with greater significance and ramifications. For example, issues of power. Usually schemes such as this get a bit of a spike in public interest when first proposed, appealing to ideologues and the ignorant. Fortunately, there usually is no staying power. The length of the attention spans is commensurate with the depth of the knowledge of those jumping on the bandwagon.

An Idea Who's Time Has Come.......2007-10-13

I, like many Americans, am no fan of income taxes and would love to see them evaporate. There has to be some form of replacement to them and it can take a variety of forms. One of the best ideas presented to date is the Fair Tax outlined in this book.

In reading other reviews, I do acknowledge some of the negatives. To me, however, the negatives are more than balanced by 2 things. One, I will no longer have to spend a large part of my spring doing mindless government forms to get back what is mine to begin with, and I will know exactly how much the government is trying to soak me for when I do make purchases under this plan. How many people know can tell what the government actually gets from us?

The book is well written, and the message is clear. It isn't the entire bill laid out, and there are some technicalities to work out, but I'm sure that this system beats what we have now.

Read this, if for no other reason than it's $7 and you're out of US Weekly back issues.......2007-10-07

As it currently operates, the tax-collecting body in this country is a pathetic, bloated, inefficient disgrace. Why and how it still exists is beyond me. That being said, I was intrigued by this book.
It's a quick read, and definitely worth a look. The authors rapidly identify the problem, then offer up their suggestions for fixing it. There is also a bit of tax history thrown in.
This book does a good job of pissing the reader off and making him/her want to do something about the problem, and also cites several times in the past that the actions and discontent of the general populace has in fact led to changes in the way taxes are levied and collected.
Simple enough for the average lazy fat dullard to read between football games yet poignant enough to get the point across, this is one of those books you wish everyone would read, or at least be aware of. Good stuff.

While Boortz is a fellow Libertarian, I am not especially fond of him. Having said that, The Fair Tax Book fully and simply explains the Fair Tax in a way anyone can grasp.

I find the Fair Tax exciting and workable and I'll do all I can to see that it's passed. It's high time to discharge the IRS and bring common sense to our federal tax system.

I applaud Boortz and, more especially Lynder, for writing this book and getting this all-important message out.

I hope more people will read it and help get The Fair Tax installed in this country.
