Book Description

This book brings together a representative selection of Robert Motherwell's writings about art, public lectures, essays, interviews, and letters. Motherwell's writing was invaluable in articulating the intent of the New York School of American artists--Pollock, de Kooning, Gottlieb, Kline, Baziotes, Still, Gorky--during a period when their work was often reviled for its departure from traditional representation. Motherwell was not only the primary theorist of abstract expressionism but also one of its major exponents. As founder of the Documents of Modern Art series (later renamed The Documents of Twentieth-Century Art), he gathered the writings of modern artists to give them a voice at a time when very few people understood their theories or work.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANCE.......2001-08-05

Robert Motherwell, is one of the great geniuses of American art. His Paintings are broad and powerful images; more "pure" than many other of the abstract painters of his day. This is a superlative book, which lets you into Motherwells mind. Any reader will see his sharp criticism and poignant observations, those who are open will take them to heart.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract Art's Virgil.......2000-11-07

Motherwell was a superb writer in addition to being a painter. This anthology spans 1941-1988. It's a great read, not only for it's insights into art but also for capturing the flavour of the time. In a sense it let's you stand behind Motherwell's shoulder and peer into his thoughts and see how he viewed modern art both from a philosophical view point as well as aesthetic.

A lot of it is drawn from his public writings and speeches but a lot is fairly personal in nature, taken from his journals.

It's well annotated and useful if you're interested in the abstract movement.

From the basic tools, to step-by-step procedures, this book is an excellent introduction to stained glass window creation. I particular liked the exercises on how to cut concave curves and other complex shapes. It is clear there is a lot of experience in the craft of stained glass and the teaching of the craft contained in this book.

              Book Description

Screenwriters must understand human behavior to make their stories come alive. This book clearly describes theories of personality and psychoanalysis with simple guidelines, thought provoking exercises, vivid film images and hundreds of examples from classic movies.

              5 out of 5 stars Complex Characters.......2007-09-24

I am not a fan of story development software, I prefer pad and pen and some good reference books. This is a great reference book if you develop complex characters. You aren't going to create a "Hannibal Lecter" character with story development software, but you may with this book. Get a good screenwriting software package (I use Movie Magic) and shop for some quality reference books instead of forking out hundreds on story development software. That's how I write, and of course that is my opinion... I have two Videographer Awards and an Aegis Award and am looking forward to bigger honors with the help of this book and others! :-) I also have a novel on Amazon...

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for writers.......2007-04-26

The strength of this book is its ability to present theories of psychology in a concise, constructive way. Reading Indick while writing a screenplay will give you constant reminders of what good stories have to come down to, character psychology. As a key to watching and understanding movies and their characters -- let alone a discussion of psychology -- this book is more limited, but for writers looking for quick, practical help it's invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Psyche improves your writing.......2006-01-25

When I first read this book, I realized that it contained alot of psychological/anthropological/mythological principles that we all take for granted and yet live each and everyday. The theories presented go so much further than just screenwriting. As screenwriting is not necessarily my forte, I found the book helpful in creating not just memorable characters, but understandable conflicts and plotlines within a short story or novel. I would highly recommend this book to novelists and short story writers beyond just the screenwriter at whom this book is primarily aimed.

There's a lot of information to be found within this book. Notes are a must, along with at least 2-3 readthroughs. Being able to apply the points to a specific piece you are working on definitely helps the points to sink in. Even if you are not terribly interested in the psychological theories of the masters, the book is broken down in such a way as to make the points which you can best apply to your characters easily understood. However, the archetypes contained within are not so simplistic & formulaic as to lose your interest or that of your reader/viewer. This book really challenges you to think about the motivations of each character in your book and how you can best end your story (or screenplay) with the creation of a whole entity with whom your audience can identify on an intangible level.

              An excellent read.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-03-24

I really didn't know what to expect when I got this book as a present, but I actually found it extremely useful in my writing. The chapters on Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung really helped me with structure for my script, and the other chapters are also full of useful insights into the psychology behind developing characters and plots. I recommend this book more than "The Writer's Journey," which I found less helpful.

              3 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for a B-rated action movie.......2004-12-30

This is a good book if you want to write a Hollywood cliché. I was looking for more depth in this book. It's really straightforward and important to read so you know how the average person views a movie, but it's really hollow. It's basically new verbiage of common sense. I'm kind of disappointed I spent $20 on this.

dog-food bowl? Is Monica Lewinsky related to Princess Diana? Are
mosquitoes more likely to bite you if you're blonde? The answer to all
these questions is yes - and Buck Wolf of ABCNEWS.com can explain why.
For the past five years, journalist Buck Wolf has been taking readers on
a singular journey along the outer fringes of pop culture. In The Wolf
Files, you'll meet Dracula's last surviving relative, Americans who have
mummified their loved ones, and parents who have sold their children's
                  names to the highest bidder.
Buck had the distinction of being the reporter who sat with Michael
Jackson on his first visit to a synagogue. He's debated Bozo in a heated
argument over the history of clowning. And he's taken the NHL's Stanley
Cup on a personal tour of Manhattan.
Buck has also given Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Sarah Jessica
Parker a dressing down, with biting comic commentary as a member of Us

                          Book Description

During the Civil War, its devastating aftermath, and the decades following, many southern white women turned to writing as a way to make sense of their experiences. Combining varied historical and literary sources, Sarah Gardner argues that women served as guardians of the collective memory of the war and helped define and reshape southern identity.

Gardner considers such well-known authors as Caroline Gordon, Ellen Glasgow, and Margaret Mitchell and also recovers works by lesser-known writers such as Mary Ann Cruse, Mary Noailles Murfree, and Varina Davis. In fiction, biographies, private papers, educational texts, historical writings, and through the work of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, southern white women sought to tell and preserve what they considered to be the truth about the war. But this truth varied according to historical circumstance and the course of the conflict. Only in the aftermath of defeat did a more unified vision of the southern cause emerge. Yet Gardner reveals the existence of a strong community of Confederate women who were conscious of their shared effort to define a new and compelling vision of the southern war experience.

In demonstrating the influence of this vision, Gardner highlights the role of the written word in defining a new cultural identity for the postbellum South.

                              Book Description

Rush Limbaugh meets Napoleon Hill in these fifteen counterintuitive rules for creating personal wealth in the new Republican-dominated era.

Currently, the GOP controls the United States presidency, Congress, Senate, Supreme Court, and the majority of governorships and statehouses. That will NOT change.

Americans are moving in droves to red states, states where government is smaller, taxes are lower, jobs are plentiful, churches abound, and small businesses are thriving. Blue states will continue to lose population, government funding, electoral votes, and political prominence. What will remain are two Americas: red states full of young, vibrant risk-takers with high incomes, advanced levels of education, strong marriages, and high church attendance. Blue states, on the other hand, are often marked by decaying, high-crime areas with older populations, infrastructures in disrepair, and sluggish business growth.

How can you succeed and plan to thrive in a Republican future? Professional sports handicapper and radio host Wayne Allyn Root reveals the new Republican rules, which include:

                              - Relocate to red states.
                              - Invest in business and buy stocks to capitalize on Social Security privatization.
                              - Buy real estate-it is your foundation for wealth and security.
                              - Invest in foreign real estate.
                              - Understand how charitable giving will help you become a Millionaire Republican.
                              - Learn to appreciate "the joy of failure."

The real key to becoming a Millionaire Republican is to do the opposite of what the masses do. Millionaire Republican shows readers how to harness the current political, business, and social winds to create a unique plan to achieve prosperity and success.

5 out of 5 stars Never any truer words written!.......2007-04-01

I only wished I could do all of the things in this book because it all is true. I would be much richer!

                              4 out of 5 stars Dead on!!.......2006-12-21

This book proved very hard to put down. I would give it 4 stars as opposed to 5 only because the author strays a bit to much from giving advice while promoting himself. Either way, VERY good book. Very revealing and eye opening look at democrats and there true initiative. Also very good advice on how to become succesful.

1 out of 5 stars Rich Republicans Get Rich - By Breaking and Buying the Law.......2006-08-04

Rich Republicans are NOT bold, daring risk-takers. If anything, Rich Republicans are risk-averse cowards devoted to protecting their possessions - and the much-vaunted "ownership Society" is all about violating the principles of capitalism to force more and more market risk onto the backs of the working poor and to insulate Rich Republicans (the "Leisure Class") from ever experiencing true financial "risk".

Furthermore, Rich Republicans do NOT seek to maintain a market atmosphere of "competition" - competition being anathema to Rich Republicans. No, Rich Republicans prefer to "game" the market, and they spend vast sums of other people's money and engage in violence to destroy their competition through buy-outs, frivolous lawsuits, intimidation, harassment and illegal wars.

This book is yet another among the many that intentionally mislead ignorant, conservative Americans about the true agenda of Rich Republicans.

5 out of 5 stars Millionaire Republican is "Right On".......2006-06-27

                              Wayne,

Just got through reading Your Millionaire Republican book last night and I thought it was great. I had a smile on my face the entire time. My wife started reading it this morning and I'll be turning more people on to it.

My wife & I moved from the midwest 15 years ago and now live in the Mecca of liberal land, the bay area outside of SF. We wanted to go west. The people here are nuts and everything you said in your book about them is absolute true! We own a small business and have six investment homes, all being in red states with four more on the way. It's just a matter of a short time and were out of here.

Just wanted to drop you a line and say thanks. You go dude!

5 out of 5 stars Follow this man to Wealth.......2006-06-10

I agree with other reviewers that the picture of Wayne standing on a roof is goofy. Keep in mind he has something to show for his hard work. Not that a large car and house make you successful (hell, anyone can lease a car or over extend themselves on mortgage payments), but he earned it. A lot of folks claim to be brilliant and know the ins and outs of book smarts, yet they are poor (e.g. government workers, so-called financial advisors, etc.).

Wayne is a little rough around the edges, but he is a project of Metro-NYC and the son of a hard working butcher. For NY guys like me, we appreciate successful self made guys like this.

Now for the book review, FANTASTIC! I read it on a flight from NY to FL and could not put it down. It will change your views (regardless of your political persuasions). You basically have two choices - curse all those who are successful, or become successful yourself.

This is not a get rich quick scheme book. It is a guide to what is important in life - religion, family values, business and learning to take care of yourself. It should be madatory reading in college. Perhaps more will understand why some will get ahead and others will fail.

You'll understand why do-gooders and those born with a silver spoon got ahead because they had someone backing them (i.e. easy to take risks). You'll also understand why these folks advocate taking your money away and giving it to others. Many of them can afford to play by different rules than you or me.

On the flip side, you'll understand how regular Joe's can achieve wealth is this great country. You'll understand why the populations are shifting and how tax and legislative policies will reshape our country. You'll learn to focus on what really matters and how to get involved in family's life and community, while still achieving your goals.

In my opinion, he's the first person I have read who accurately explains why an ego is important. Not as a tool to stomp on others, but as a positive motivational tool to get ahead honestly and professionaly.

Wayne will probably run for national office someday, and he has my vote. Read this book and he'll have yours too.
