In gloriously exuberant woodcuts and sweetly charming text, artist and author Stephen Huneck tells the story of The Dog Chapel, the real-life, complete-with-a-steeple chapel he built on a hill in Vermont to celebrate the love and friendship we enjoy from our canine friends. After an introduction in which he explains how he came to build the dog chapel, Huneck provides photos of its serene, doggy-friendly interior--including pews carved with dog images for the humans, and comfy mats and doggy doors for four-legged visitors. The heart of the book offers witty illustrations and touching "bites" of wisdom for dog lovers of all ages: "To bring your dog joy, put on your jacket and grab a leash!" and "You can trust a dog with your life... but not with your lunch." At the back of the book a tear-out frame is included, and readers are invited to send their dog photo and messages to the chapel for inclusion in its Remembrance Wall. Huneck dedicates the book to his beloved, now departed black Lab Sally, the "star" of three previous books in which she ventured to the beach, to the mountains, and to a farm. --Judy Fireman

Book Description

I wanted to build a chapel, a place that celebrated the spiritual bond we have with our dogs, a place that would be open to all dogs and to people of any faith or belief system.-Stephen Huneck

With The Dog Chapel, Stephen Huneck, author and artist of Abrams' beloved children's books about Sally, the black Lab, presents a warm and heartfelt offering to adult dog lovers everywhere. In joyful celebration of the bond between humans and their canine companions, The Dog Chapel gives readers a touching introduction to Huneck, his renowned woodcuts and sculpture, and his greatest artistic achievement: the chapel he built for dogs in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Magical and transforming, Huneck's book, like the chapel itself, is testimonial to the love, humor, loyalty, and solace dogs bring to our lives every day.

Featured in The New York Times and USA Today, on Oprah and the Today show, the Dog Chapel draws visitors, with their dogs, from all over the world. The Dog Chapel includes a preface by Huneck, many color photographs of the chapel, and more than 30 woodcuts. It also includes a pull-out frame that can be sent to the chapel-along with a photo of a beloved dog-where it will take an honored place on the "Remembrance Wall."

This is a beautiful book, well written, and full of wonderful pictures. The authors account of how the book came to be is touching. For anyone who has had to put their dog to sleep, a gift of this book would be of great comfort. There is even a memorial picture frame in the back of the book in which you can send a photo of your dog up to the chapel.

        Book Description

Approaches to portraiture range from super-realism (think of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa) to the abstract (Andy Warhol's multiple silk-screened images of Marilyn Monroe), but all portraits have one thing in common--they depict people. The human face has always been an easily accessible subject for artists. In this comprehensive overview, a brief history of portrait painting and a gallery of famous works are followed by basic information on working with models, lighting, proportions of the face, getting a likeness, body shapes and clothes, skin tints, and more. As you work on your own portrait projects--including a self-portrait--you will see how different materials, such as watercolor, acrylics, and oils, can create different effects and moods.

5 out of 5 stars A parable for men over 40.......2007-02-12

I respectfully disagree with the other review which dismisses this excellent work, both in its art and concept. Not for everyone, certainly. In fact, because of the subject matter, this may be of service to a limited audience, but for them, this work is profound. Through the medium of an extended dream, following the intuitive and symbolic logic that speaks on a different level than the literal, a man is led back into his soul's history to escape the hell of a life lived too small.

1 out of 5 stars No Bargain here..........2005-09-04

Now I can see why this was in the bargain bin. The story is lame and half way through at the latest you know how this is going to end. Medium grade illustration. Save you'r money.

Here Peacocke and Pederson compose a rhapsody on divine creativity in three movements. Through an extended analogy, they reveal how Christian understandings of creation can be brightly lit by scientific insights and approached analogously through examining musical creativity. They also include relevant selections on an accompanying CD-ROM. Composition, fugal arrangement, rhythm and tempo, jazz improvization all shed light on creation. Creation from nothing, continual creation, incarnate creativity, communal or ecclesial creativity, openended future creativity—new ways of thinking about the Christian teaching are illumined and exemplified in musical creativity from Bach to Monk: Prelude First Movement: Creation with Time Second Movement: Creation in Time Bridge Passage: Creation Fulfilled Third Movement:Working at Creation Coda: Ongoing Creation

              Book Description

This book is about one of the most extraordinary phenomena of our times, one which raises fundamental questions about the nature of altruism, about the character of humankind, about a new political agenda and about the relationship of humans with the rest of nature. This phenomenon is the attention paid to the welfare of nonhuman animals and their rights or interests. In the century since Darwin, humankind have clung to the notion that they are entirely different from and morally superior to all other species. This modern idea is in sharp contrast to ancient times when, the evidence shows, early humans respected animals and early religions saw them as divine manifestations. The relationship of humankind to other species is the focus of this work. An historical overview is first presented, crossing many cultures and eras. The ethics of animal exploitation and "pain-ism" are next covered, followed by an exploration of the science of animal welfare. How the political debate over animal welfare has developed and its potential for changing politicians' attitudes and behavior are the subjects of the concluding chapter.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An insightful book on animal rights (AR) by a pioneer of AR.......1999-01-05

The author Richard Ryder is well known in animal protection circles as a successful campaigner politically and as the creator of the notion of "speciesism", a term he introduced to describe the universal oppression of the other animals by the human species. The Political Animal is his latest book and is an overview of the history of the human-nonhuman relationship, its ethics, the science of animal welfare and the political campaign.

Ryder, as a pioneer of the modern animal rights movement, is in an almost unique position in being able to write about all its aspects, European as well as American, scientific, political as well as philosophical. He is an activist in all these arenas. In the book, he describes how he stimulated the scientific study of animals, achieved direct contacts with influential politicians and revealed forgotten aspects of the history of the animal reform movement. Wearing his philosophical hat he proposes a moral code that is applicable not only in human to animal relationships, but also in human to human interactions. Briefly, he contends that we have a moral duty to relieve the pain and distress of others, regardless of their race, sex or species, with priority being given to the individual who is suffering most (i.e. the "painient"). He calls his position "painism".

This is a short, concise and insightful book on various important aspects of the subject of animal rights and protection - an issue that is likely to be far more conspicuous in the politics of the new millennium.

This book seems to cover just about everything. It was highly recommended by a friend - cancer survivor. Good book to have on hand as a reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely useful book to keep patients up to date ..........2006-07-10

The most useful tool in fighting cancer is this: knowledge. Knowledge of what exactly you have; knowledge of the latest techniques, clinical trials, meds, etc; and the risk factors. This book gives you that. Cancer is arguably the fastest moving area of medecine there is; analyses and coclusions are regularly formed, reformed, reformed again, over and over and over. Staying on top of the treatment protocols is critical, and for the moment at least, this book helps patients do that. I highly recommend this book to anyone diagnosed with cancer; it gives you an invaluable framework for asking the right questions and could save your life. Do not assume that all doctors are created equal. They are not. For a patient, it is your job to ask the right questions. This book can only help do that!

5 out of 5 stars Choices, Fourth Edition by Marion Morra.......2006-03-15

When I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1989, I discovered this book and have been recommending it to cancer patients ever since. Recently, I decided it was time to get a more up to date edition and I am glad that I did. It not only has a lot of additional information, it is still as easy to use as the earlier edition.
'Choices' is the one book that provides newly diagnosed cancer patients with answers to questions that many of us did not even we should ask. Yours in good health, Nora Deane

Having worked in the oncology area and had relatives stricken with cancer, I can not think of a more useful tool for someone who needs to fight cancer. This is a very dynamic area of medicine where treatment protocols are made then remade. How do you know if your doctor is up to speed? Book Description

Twenty-one-year-old Christina Lamb left suburban England for Peshawar on the frontier of the Afghan war. Captivated, she spent two years tracking the final stages of the mujaheddin victory over the Soviets, as Afghan friends smuggled her in and out of their country in a variety of guises.

Returning to Afghanistan after the attacks on the World Trade Center to report for Britain's Sunday Telegraph, Lamb discovered the people no one else had written about: the abandoned victims of almost a quarter century of war. Among them, the brave women writers of Herat who risked their lives to carry on a literary tradition under the guise of sewing circles; the princess whose palace was surrounded by tanks on the eve of her wedding; the artist who painted out all the people in his works to prevent them from being destroyed by the Taliban; and Khalil Ahmed Hassani, a former Taliban torturer who admitted to breaking the spines of men and then making them stand on their heads.

Christina Lamb's evocative reporting brings to life these stories. Her unique perspective on Afghanistan and deep passion for the people she writes about make this the definitive account of the tragic plight of a proud nation.

5 out of 5 stars Great reporting from someone who knows Afghanistan.......2007-05-26

Christina Lamb is a journalist who spent several years in Afghanistan in the 1980s and then returned after the US-led invasion in 2001. She is clearly an adventurous type, and ended up hiding in ditches with mujaheddin under fire, among other things. Some of her friends ended up in the Taliban, while another (Hamid Karzai) is now the post-Taliban president of the country.

The book combines stories from both periods, as well as stories from friends about life under the Taliban. You'll meet a torturer for the Taliban, women who organized secret schools, mullahs who use motorbikes to scoot around the country because Soviet soldiers can't spot bikes easily, and a lot of Afghans trying to live their lives in a war-torn country. Lamb's experiences in the country over several decades make this book stand out among the many other Western accounts.

No matter how many books about Afghanistan I read, I continue to be amazed by how violent this society is, especially Pashtun society. Violence and brutality begin in the household and continues into public spaces and up into the political system. As a middle-class Brit, you'd expect Lamb to be highly critical - - and she is, in a way, but she prefers to take on the role of a reporter with many Afghan friends and a lot of sympathy for the people of the country.

Some people will find these stories depressing, and of course many of them are. Some stories will be hard for people to read. But I think it's ultimately an optimistic book, grounded in a love of the country and its people despite the horrors that insiders and outsiders have inflicted upon it.

                              Highly recommended.

                              5 out of 5 stars Superb Journalism.......2006-11-22

The author repeatedly traveled to Afghanistan (as well as to other, adjacent nations) in the course of recording her impressions and tying them together in a story of the Afghani peoples and nation. As with all best reportage of this sort, her narrative is constructed of direct observations, conversation, and interviews, both formal and informal. The suffering of the Afghanis is as undeniable as it is appalling--but the strength of her narrative rests upon the history and details she effortlessly weaves together. You can't read this book and remain unaffected, whatever your view about the current military conflict going on in that part of the world. It is appropriate that Ms. Lamb won the highest award available from those who know her craft best, her fellow journalists. She is a compassionate and honest human being; were it only the case we could say that of all, a story such as she tells would never have been formed.

                              5 out of 5 stars Very readable.......2006-08-06

I found the book The Sewing Circles of Herat to be historically very informative. The book showed a map at the beginning which it was helpful to keep referring to in order to keep in mind where the towns were located. There were also alot of photographs in the book which gave a good impression of how people looked. I really understood the change that all the unrest in Afghanistan had wrought on both the people and the country. I enjoyed the book very much.

                              5 out of 5 stars Don't be misled by the title . . ........2006-06-17

Not knowing Christina Lamb's reputation as an award-winning, hardcore journalist, I started this book expecting it to explore the domestic arts and social conditions of women in this regional center of Afghanistan. Wrong. Couldn't be more wrong. This is a hard-hitting look at the combined political, military, and religious forces that over the last three decades have shattered this country.

Not that Afghanistan was ever a peaceable kingdom, its brief periods of relative calm punctuated over 5000 years with invasions, occupations, and bloody fraternal warfare, characterized by extremes of brutality. And Lamb's book provides plenty of historical background in this regard. However, the tragedy of modern-day Afghanistan as spelled out in detail here is sometimes traumatizing. Lamb ventures obsessively and heart stoppingly into the pitch of battle, traveling now with mujaheddin fighters during the last months of the Soviet Occupation and later, on her own, to Herat, Kandahar, and Kabul at the end of the Taliban regime. She interviews military commanders, along with Hamid Karzai, two high-ranking Taliban on the run and the former director of Pakistan's ISI, which used a massive infusion of capital from both the CIA and Osama bin Laden to arm and mastermind the mujaheddin resistance.

Meanwhile, in her interviews with both combatants and noncombatants, we see the human cost of warfare of which the Taliban for all their excesses are only partly to blame. The loss has been inconceivable, as Lamb describes it - the dead, the tortured and maimed, the devastated cities, countless uncharted mine fields, a destroyed cultural heritage, and the impact on a whole generation who have grown up with war; the list is endless. Lamb doesn't pull her punches. It's clear that whatever foreign hands have touched Afghanistan - always in their own "interest" - they have left a proud country with a rich culture in ruins. And as today's headlines continue to reveal, that process seems far from over.

Also recommended: Jason Eliot's Afghanistan travelogue, "An Unexpected Light," and E. M. Hirsch's novel "Kabul."

5 out of 5 stars Truthful, objective perspective for a people misunderstood.......2006-04-12

Though this book was at times hard to follow (mostly dates of trips, return trips, interviews and return intervies) it was an excellent read. Difficult to put down, journalist Christina Lamb compels the reader forward with a prose that rivals many novels. A non-american perspective also helps portray a realistic and empathetic look at past and current Afghanistan issues while adding some historical data I find useful in following the situation today. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars spectacular guide to all herons, egrets, and bitterns!.......2001-03-05

Authors James Hanock and James Kushlan, along with illustrators Robert Gillmor and Peter Hayman have put together a simply gorgeous guide to all the world's species of herons, egrets, and bitterns. A guide to herons on every continent except Antarctica, all 60 species as recognized by the book, it is a thorough treatment of each one. Each species has a breathtaking color illustration, many times an additional black and white illustration, the common name, genus and species name, alternate common names, when and who first described it as species, maps illustrating range (including directions of migration and areas of casual occurrences), several paragraphs describing in detail their physical appearance, notes on their distribution and population, migration, habitat, behavior flying, feeding, and breeding, descriptions of nests, eggs, and young, and a note or two on taxonomy. Subspecies are noted as well; for instance a two page color range map depicts the 30 subspecies of the green-backed heron, found throught the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and several Pacific and Indian Ocean island groups.

In addition to being a thorough field guide and collection of natural history notes on the world's herons, egrets, and bitterns the first section of the book contains useful articles on heron classification, courtship, feeding, and tips on identifying herons and egrets, including several color plates that aid in identifying the many white herons and egrets that live around the world. An extensive bibliography closes out this work.

Whether you want to read more about the great blue heron or the black-crowned night heron that lives around the local river or swamp, or something more exotic, like the black heron of Africa or the zigzag heron of South America, then this is the book for you. The book will also be of interest to conservationists, as several species such as the slaty egret have very restricted ranges (in this case known to breed only in the Okavango swamp in northwest Botswana) or very small populations such as Malagasy heron.

                                    Book Description

Herons and their close relatives, the egrets and bitterns, comprise sixty species in total and are found all over the world except in polar regions, and are a strikingly beautiful part of the wetlands they inhabit. They are particularly abundant and popular in South West USA, especially Florida. Herons are a diverse group, easily recognised by their long legs, necks and bills. Many species are notable for their sociality as they feed, roost, and nest together in single or mixed species assemblages. The authors have extensive experience of research and observation of these birds and this book provides an up to date comprehensive review of the herons of the world. Covering their biology, distribution, description, systematics, breeding, feeding, and conservation, James Hancock and James Kushlan have distilled their lifetimes' research on the heron into one volume. This volume is complemented by beautiful colour paintings especially painted for the book, colour photographs, and distribution maps.
