For those who need to understand Industrial Design, its aesthetics, symmetry and creativity operations is one of the classic books. If an industrial designer believes that, before any project, it is necessary to build a structural grid, and a "philosophical" geometric principle, The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry, by Jay Hambidge, is one of those books.

Hambidge writes about design principles found in nature which can be applied to the work of the artist and designer. Since the time of the ancient Egyptians, these compositional techniques have been used to give proportion, symmetry, and beauty to buildings, sculpture, paintings, etc. Because of their complexity and rigor, the principles are no longer taught widely, but they are useful for any artist or designer interested in making compositions which appeal to humans' unconscious sense of proportion. The book is old, and a little difficult to understand, but Dover has reproduced it well.

The arson attacks in 2006 on a number of small Baptist churches in rural Alabama recall the rash of burnings at predominantly black houses of worship that damaged or destroyed dozens of southern churches in the mid-1990s. One of the churches struck by probable arson in 1996 was Little Zion Baptist Church in Boligee, Alabama. This book draws on the voices and memories of church members to share a previously undocumented history of Little Zion, from its beginnings as a brush arbor around the time of emancipation, to its key role in the civil rights movement, to its burning and rebuilding with the help of volunteers from around the world.

Folklorist Shelly O'Foran, a Quaker who went to Boligee as a volunteer in the church rebuilding effort, describes Little Zion as always having been much more than the building itself. She shows how the spiritual and social traditions that the residents of Boligee practice and teach their children have assured the continued vitality of the church and community. Little Zion also explores the power of oral narrative, through thoughtful fieldwork and presentation, to promote understanding between those inside and outside the church community. Illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs, this volume is both a celebration of Little Zion's history and an invitation to share in its long life story.

Asterix finds a foundling at his doorstop. Obelix of course thinks the Stork brought him. They make a minor mistake or too giving him a bottle that has some magic potion still in it.

It turns out the child is likely to be a highborn Roman, so they go touring and looking for the father. It takes the arrival of other royalty for them to learn the truth.

Albert Uderzo, Asterix and Son (Dargaud, 1985)

A bundle of joy appears mysteriously on Asterix's doorstep, and Asterix and Obelix set out to figure out whose he is and why he got dropped off with Asterix. Wagging tongues follow, of course, and the child's parentage turns out to be an even more convoluted question than originally thought. I've really been somewhat surprised by the all-Uderzo books; I expected I wouldn't like them nearly as much as the Goscinny books, but Uderzo seems to have kept the series going quite capably, at least at the beginning. I liked it just as much as most of the previous books. ***

Baby Asterix?.......2007-01-29

"Asterix and Son" is the 27th comic in the Asterix series, written and illustrated by Albert Udzero in 1983. It's a pretty good one, even if it is just set around the Gaulish village where Asterix lives.

Obelix is Asterix's friend, and even though he's old enough to have his own menhir business and grow his own moustache, still believes that babies come from the stork, and is even more convinced when Asterix finds a baby on his doorstep. The Romans seem very interested in the baby, including Brutus, Julius Caesar's friend...

Worth a look for fans. There's a lot of gags and character play, which is interesting since it was written by the illustrator, (both ways a good job, I thought).

Super addition to your comic collection........2003-05-03

For some one 48 and getting older, I thoroughly loved this one. Remarkable ending to the usual Asterix comic. Loved the character of Dogmatix the dog in this issue.

Asterix and Obelix must deal with the strange phenomenon of a baby boy, dropped on Asterix' doorstep.

This book is written by one of the foremost experts in the area of the study and theory of moods. Dr. Thayer's pioneering research in this area extends over a period of two decades. The book itself offers a scientific understanding of mood and arousal. It is rich in ideas as well as practical approaches to mood self regulation. In particular it presents a sophisicated but understandable theory of moods. The practical side of the book and one that appeals most to the average individual involves a framework, based on empirical research, on how to manage one's moods in order increase personal energy and calmness. This book contains very useful activities to assist in mood self regulation and self understanding.

Great read on a fascinating subject: moods.......1998-10-20

I just couldn`t stop reading once I got started. Thayer`s concept of how and why moods occur is not only easy to understand but also absolutely plausible. So much so that I've tried out a few things and found they work. It doesn`t mean that I go on 5-minute brisk walks every time I feel low, but since now I know (most of the times) where that feeling comes from it seems a lot less disturbing.

Robert Thayer's book has enlightened me to the one area I have never understood, good and bad feelings. He explains how two things, Tension, and Energy, result in you're being upset, happy, content, crabby, and depressed. In November 1940 Britain was isolated in its stand against Nazi Germany and its ally, Italy. We had no allies save the exiled governments of countries conquered by Germany; the USA was neutral and Russia had signed a pact with Hitler. Britain could not afford to lose control of the Mediterranean, but the Royal Navy was already overstretched by the U-boat war and the threat of invasion. Italy's fleet of modern battleships presented a grave threat to our communications with Egypt and the Suez Canal. On the night of 11 November 1940, 42 members of the Fleet Air Arm took off in 21 obsolete 'Swordfish' biplanes, launched from HMS Illustrious. Their target: the Italian fleet anchorage at Taranto. Pressing home their attack in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire and searchlights, they torpedoed and sank three battleships. Incredibly, all but two of the biplanes survived. The Italian fleet was crippled and the world took note that Britain was far from defeated. No-one was more impressed than the Japanese, who noted how a fleet in harbour could be demolished by air attack. In this new account of the Royal Navy's most daring operation of the Second World War, David Wragg reveals how the plan began as possible League of Nations response to Italy's invasion of Ethiopia. Drawing on British and Italian records as well as interviews with the aircrew, he tells the full story of a night that changed the course of the war.

The "Stringbag" Saves the Day.......2005-04-29

On a dark and cold night in November of 1940, twenty one obsolete British torpedo bombers ("Swordfish") took off from the aircraft carrier Illustrious in the Mediterranean Sea. Their target was the Italian naval base at Taranto. Lying at anchor were six battleships, along with several cruisers and destroyers. This group made up the majority of the Italian Navy.

Relying on the navigational skills of the pilots, the British aircraft swarmed over the harbor, dropping flares to illuminate the ships and dropping torpedoes and bombs while facing murderous anti-aircraft fire from the Italians. For the loss of only two aircraft, the British managed to sink three battleships, three cruisers, and a destroyer. This successful raid greatly altered the balance of power in the Mediterranean and forced the Italians to move the rest of their fleet to safer harbors in northern Italy.

I was a little disappointed with this book. The title is somewhat misleading, for the actual attack on Taranto is only covered in two chapters. Much of the remainder of the book deals with the development of the British carriers in the pre-war years. Much time is also spent on the entire battle of the Mediterranean; something that maybe should have been left to a larger book. The chapters that actually deal with the attack itself are very good, and the attack is described in great detail. Being a Pearl Harbor buff, I also enjoyed the chapter that compares the Taranto raid to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I feel that this could have been a much better book if the author would have devoted more space to the actual Taranto raid. One to two chapters just doesn't due the attack justice. I did enjoy learning about the battles in the Mediterranean. However, I read this book hoping to learn about the Taranto raid, and after finishing it, I didn't learn much more than I already knew before reading the book. If you're interested in learning about the whole battle for the Mediterranean Sea, then this book does a fairly good job of describing it, but it lacks quite a bit in the description of the attack on Taranto.

Precursor to Pearl.......2004-05-30

Often touted as the attack that proved to the Japanese that aerial torpedoes would work in a shallow harbor, the attack on Taranto is usually relagated to a few paragraphs in books about the more infamous Dec. 7, 1941 attack. Wragg tells us the rest of the story with a clear and interesting, if somewhat pedestrian, recount of this remarkable surprise attack on the Italian battleship fleet in 1940. There are a lot of characters in this story, so many that it can become a bit confusing for the reader. But perhaps the most interesting character and the one developed best by the author is the Fairey Swordfish, the slow biplane that these stunningly brave British airmen flew into the maelstrom of Taranto harbor to all but put an end to the Italian fleet. A little known story, well told. Recommended!

Fantastic and good for someone on the go.......2007-01-30

This is revolution a great book for someone that has somewhere to be. The writings are mostly just a few pages long so you can begin and finish a thought before you have to stop reading. The only setback is that Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" isn't in the book in it's entirety. Only the appendix for "Common Sense" is in it. It is really hard to label that a setback because this book has so much packed into it for such a reasonable price.

This book is great for anyone interested in the development of new ideas. When all of these writings are taken as a whole you can really appreciate what each revolutionary was trying to convey. A great read and very well priced.

Great Collection of Great Writings.......2006-11-03

I had always wanted to read the Communist Manifesto. This book surrounds Marx's writing with others that show a clear development towards a new kind of freedom and government. When placed in the contex of other great writers of new thinking, all of these works have greater meaning.

This is a superb collection to buy.

NIce Anthology for a nice Price.......2005-09-25

For 3.50 you cannot go wrong with this Dover Anthology of revolutionary writings. Spanning the American, French, Russian and Chinese revolutions it offers a broad range from Rousseau to Paine and Mao. One of the best advantages of this edition is that it offers many speeches and small writings that normally would have to be tracked down in a library. Though there are not many completed revolutionary texts in this edition, you have to remember that it is under 5 dollars and that similar, larger anthologies also do not include that manny completed texts. So if you are interested in revolutionary writings this book would be the perfect introduction for you.
