Read With Glasses On Or Off But You Must Own This Comedy Classic!.......2007-01-15
Gary Larson has created the funniest cartoons in the history of mankind. Unlike other comics you do not need to read them in a series as each individual cartoon tells its own hilarious story in a stand alone fashion. Therefore you do not need to have read the previous volumes to enjoy this edition to its fullest.
Fourth in the series of Far Side collections, the 1994 originally released Gallery 4's cartoons come from the smaller books Wildlife Preserves, Wiener Dog Art and Unnatural Selections. This volume is forwarded by Robin Williams who gives a four paragraph opinion on Larson and his work. Far Side Gallery 4 also have a unique cover where the lenses of the woman's glasses have been cut out, meaning when you open the cover, still viewing the exact same drawing, the glasses are on their own on the next page. This however does mean Gallery 4 has the most fragile cover of all the galleries.
A mixture of four comics to a page and full page comics make up this volume, most are black and white but with the occasional coloured pages every now and then. Classic Far Sides in this volume include aliens with the moon landing astronauts in a jar about to shake the jar to see if they'll fight, the hospital for mothers whose children stepped on sidewalk cracks, the famous Mr Ed verse Francis the talking mule debates, punk accountants and many more hilarious cartoons such a chicken reading a sign on the other side of the road saying Why Do You Need a Reason?
This like all Larson's work is a must own!
A different meaning for "All Creatures Great and Small"........2005-01-07
This book is a real HOOT!
I guess the thing that makes Larson's cartoons so different is that his mind is just a little further off in space than where most of ours dwell.
Reading a whole book of these cartoons is a very different thing from looking at individual cartoons over an extended period. After 10-15 pages your mind tends to get climatized to this thought process and his cartoons almost start to feel like the normal ,rather than perverse, way to look at things.
We all need this exercise in mind-stretching and it is great to do it with humor.
I strongly recommend it to anyone who is not already a fan of Larso;myself for instance,at least until now.
If there are a few cartoons in the book that you did not "get";it simply means your mind is not totally warped yet.Just keep at it,you'll make it!
Enjoy !
brilliant.......2003-12-02
Gary Larson is by far the most genius, the most innovative cartoonest ever to hit the world. This gallery has a forward by Robin Williams and tons of Larson's best work. You can't not love his sense of humor (and definitely check out the Prehistory of the Far Side).
!The far side of histercleness!.......2003-04-17
Gary Larson in this includes some great ones like theres a dog with like 50 people following him he says, "I can't smell a damn thing." Plus there's a foreward by king of comedy from mrs. Doughtfire Robin Williams. Here's somhing he says in it. "I really like the way he draws humans. Maybe someday scientists will dig up his cartoons and think that the 20ith century man has a rarely big nose and buck teeth."

Before office people faxed around Dilbert strips, they faxed the good ol' Far Side. This big 192-page treasury collects the first three standard collections: The Far Side, Beyond the Far Side, and In Search of the Far Side. Watch out for funny snakes, cows, and nerds--and don't let your boss catch you near the fax machine.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Far Side Gallery is the first collection of Gary Larson's crazy comic strips featuring hordes of talking anthropomorphised fauna and fowl of all shapes and sizes.
These are generally very amusing, and generally very witty, and you are bound to get some fridge or door material out of one of these.
realer than real.......2007-07-13
Gary is sorely missed. Almost no one saw it the way he did. I hope another comes along.
Original 1984 Gallery of Masterpieces Will Never Go Out of Fashion.......2006-12-19
Larson's original gallery has so many classic Far Side cartoons that you can not justify not owning this sensational collection of his work. Larson may well have retired a while ago but the power of these works of brilliance to make the reader laugh will never fade. There have been many who have copied Larson's style but I have never come across anyone else who has even come close to achieving the quality of The Far Side.
Buy The Far Side Gallery along with its sequels, the original smaller books that make up these galleries are also great buys, along with the calendars and other merchandise. Larson's 2007 calendar gives all the proceeds to wildlife conservation (which obviously inspired a lot of his work) so get that too. You can never own enough of The Far Side.
In this volume (originally released in 1984) of the Gallery collections you will find such classic Far Sides as on Noah's Ark "Well that's it for the unicorns, from now on all the carnivores are confined to C Deck", the father being held up by his shirt collar by an invisible man with his son saying "BigBob is tired of you saying he doesn' exist, the smashed bottle falling from the clouds with humans running away with the word Uh-Oh! from the sky. The bears riding in the circus car saying "Looks Like a trap I said, nonsense no one would set a trap way out here in the woods you said...." The crocodiles on the river bank saying "That was incredible, no fur, claws, horns, antlers or nothing, just soft and pink" and of course the classic picture of dinosaurs smoking with the caption beneath "The Real Reason Dinosaurs Became Extinct" are just a small sample of the classic laughs within this sensational masterpiece.
It's the Far Side, but..........2006-03-10
Okay, it's a collection of Far Side comics, which is what I want, so it's awesome for that reason. BUT, the actual final product in book form is a little disappointing. First, all the comics are black and white. Yeah, it's not about the art and you don't miss much without color, but come on, would a little color kill anyone (especially ones that were originally color)? Second, it's pretty thin on strips, with 4 to a page most of the time (a good amount) sometimes 2 on a page, and even occassionally one comic on a single page! It looks pretty silly with just one giant comic on a page.
My First Far Side Collection.......2006-03-05
Some of my earliest memories are filled with reading The Far Side on my father's lap after the evening meal. Whenever I asked my parents for a one of the standard collections, they told me to wait, one day they would all be in one book. Then, for Christmas one year, I got this book.
What can I say, but thank you Mom and Dad and thank you Mr. Larson! The Far Side was, and still is, funny, original, and timeless. This collection gives you some of the best of the original strips and lends itself well to watching the progression of humor up and through until the end.

This fabulous desk calendar is comprised of Gary Larson's offbeat, demented, and wildly entertaining Far Side cartoons. Every quintessential Larson character is featured--grotesque human beings, gigantic insects, and intelligent talking cows. Each week highlights another scenario satirizing the trivialities of being human. The Far Side Desk Calendar also provides ample space for planning your hectic week.
Customer Reviews:
I laughed my way through it.......2006-07-11
The cartoons in this book are hysterical. Larson has a great sense of humor, albeit a little twisted. My favorite was the one where God is going the up escalator and the Devil is going down. The Devil has just smacked God in the face with a crème pie. Many of the cartoons are visual and textual puns on life and the universe. I laughed my way all through this book and strongly recommend it to anyone who needs to yuk up their life.
The far end of the Far Side.......2005-07-15
This is the very first collection of Larson's beloved Far Side cartoons. It's a small book, with just two of his early cartons per page, but they're good ones. All of them show Larson's inverted sense of reality. One shows a housewife on the phone, surrounded by fishbowls: "Well that's how it happened Sylvia ... I kissed this frog, he turns into a prince, we get married, and wham! ... I'm stuck at home with a bunch of pollywogs." Several others show an upset Santa Claus, his famous reindeer, and a mention of venison. Many show his fascination with improbable doings of wildlife. That earned him a place in the hearts of biologists everywhere, so much that a newly-discovered species was named in his honor.

This Is Only The Beginning..........2002-02-08
This book presents the first lot of cartoons from the widely syndicated 'Far Side' strip. You will find hilarious cartoons, completely strange cartoons, rebellious cows, ducks, mugger bears, tales of cavemen, Scientist hijinks, all of which leave you gasping for air whilst you try to stop laughing. Recommended to anyone who enjoys the stupid facts of life. YAY!!
A Gary Larson Classic........2000-08-29
Maybe this book does not contain so many "hits" as others, but it is still a good old Gary Larson Classic. I am a huge fan of his work and I think it is worth buying and reading. Among other things to find out, what REALLY happened with Dorothy and co., when they enetered the yellow road.

The artist and the writer have made a high quality comic. Action is overflowing, but it never lets the story get lost. Sixteen century Japan is depicted in its full glory and detail but without imposible romanticism or longing. The characters are clearly described, both by the script and the drawing. Love, mistery, violence, treason, revenge and politics mingle in a masterwork of so-called "comic". Highly recommendable for comic lovers.

Not enough of a good thing.......1998-08-13
The premise is cute and, oddly enough, believable within the text of the book. However, the book is much too short. The reader is left with the feeling that the author wrote a great beginning and a dynamite ending but didn't know what to put in between. Still worth reading if the high hardback price doesn't daunt you.

Customer Reviews:
ALL THE DIRT THAT'S FIT (?) TO PRINT.......2003-12-20
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Quirk has a background as reporter for, and editor of, various fan magazines. His penchant for juicy gossip would fit well in any tabloid publication.
I don't think that a single bit of gossip about the Kennedys, starting with patriarch, Joe Sr., and continuing down through the present generation has been overlooked by Quirk. He also hasn't missed an opportunity to do a little self aggrandizement when he can work it in. An example: One of the main reasons Joe Kennedy pursued Gloria Swanson was because he was jealous of Quirk's Uncle Jimmie Quirk, who had married a famous and beautiful movie star. According to our Quirk, (the author Lawrence), Kennedy the elder had an obsessive need to outdo Uncle Jimmie, so Kennedy went after, and landed an even more famous star, Gloria Swanson. Also, according to Quirk, the elder Kennedy wasn't just satisfied to have an affair with Swanson, he also got her involved in a business deal that went sour. When their business deal failed, he managed to arrange it so she was left with all the debts (leaving her practically destitute) before he walked away, free and clear.
Again, according to Quirk, Joe Sr. had many more affairs which his wife, Rose, politely ignored, thus setting the example that many future Kennedy wives followed. See the book for examples of this wifely behaviour.
Joe's male offsprings, and the husbands of his daughters followed suit, says Quirk.
He tells us that son-in-law Peter Lawford was bisexual. amd wasn't quite manly enough to really make it socially with Joe's sons. Lawford went through life trying to win their favor by acting as chief procurer of feminine company for Jack and Bobbie, always feeling inferior, resentful, and unappreciated.
Each son had his own pecadillos, too many to list here, but not one was spared by Quirk in this gossip fest.
Quirk, of course, always quoted sources for each of his tidbits, including occasionally citing himself in a previous publication, as the source.
As Quirk tells it, members of previous generations of his family played important roles in the affairs of the Kennedys.
If you like the kind of materials you find in the tabloids, you'll enjoy __THE KENNEDYS IN HOLLYWOOD__.

Maintaining the status quo..........2002-04-09
The Squadron/Signal series has always been good value for money and this one is no exception. The Brewster Buffalo was deservedly much-maligned due to indifferent performance, stability issues and manufacturing defects, making it dog meat for any Zero pilot. It was, however, an important factor in the early battles of WWII. The book gives little indication of the general feeling of allied pilots towards the F2A; only the Finns were able to make it work at all and much is made of that, which gives the reader cause to ask why. Otherwise, this little book covers the brief history of the aircraft quite well. The illustrations have always been a strong suit of this series and this one is among their best. Good value for money is the key here.
A classic work on the Brewster Buffalo.......2001-09-27
This is one of the best works produced in the series of "in action" books produced by Squadron./signal publications. The Brewster Buffalo aircraft has had a bad press, due to its perceived contribution to the Fall of Singapore in 1942 and its failure at the battle of Midway, and this work goes some way in correcting this view.
This work covers all of the operators (US Navy, USAAF, Finland, Belgium, RAF, RAAF, Royal Navy and Dutch East Indies) as well as captured aircraft flown in Japan and Germany, and the development of the Buffalo.
This book is good value, highly informative and is the best book on this aircraft so far produced. I recomend it highly.
Book Description
Central Asia's first decade of independence was disappointing for those who envisioned a transition from Soviet republics to independent states with market economies and democratic political systems. The region was given a "second chance" to address social and economic problems, but the Soviet-era leaders have been more interested in exploiting state resources and controlling their populations than in implementing democratic and regional reforms.
Central Asia, a critical battlefield in the war on terror, is vitally important and still unfamiliar even to many foreign policy specialists. Regional expert Martha Brill Olcott highlights the deep contradiction running through U.S. policy toward Central Asia. Partnerships with antidemocratic regimes have created long-term security risks and the international community has remained complicit in its lack of effective engagement. As recent events in Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan demonstrate, tensions in the region lie close to the surface: If we are to prevent these states from descending into chaos, the international community must identify solutions to the economic, political, and social challenges confronting them.
Customer Reviews:
A Treasure Trove of Information About Central Asia.......2005-12-29
Martha Brill Olcott's valuable new survey of Central Asia has appeared at a tricky time. Clearly, the study of Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan was started with an optimistic spirit. It looks like a guidebook that could have been used for businesspeople, academics, students, and even tourists to the region that fills the center of the Eurasian land mass, Mackinder's famous "pivot point" of world history.
The Andijan violence of 2005 has clearly been a pivot point for regional geopolitics, and perhaps for President Bush's Global War on Terror. In the aftermath of what the Uzbek government declared was a terrorist attack on a major population center, the US and EU condemned the government for "excessive force," demanding an international investigation. China and Russia, on the other hand, backed authoritarian leader Islam Karimov's decision to fire on armed demonstrators holding hostages, who had earlier seized several government buildings and set fire to movie theatres. To answer riot and rebellion with Napoleon's "whiff of grapeshot" seemed logical to the East, if not to the West.
This split had spillover effects. In its aftermath, Karimov ordered troops out of the US base in Uzbekistan and signed an alliance with Russia. It marked a geopolitical defeat for the United States, and the first instance where Bush's "democracy" policy took precedence over military requirements for the Global War on Terror. Deprived of its base in Uzbekistan, the US was then squeezed by Kyrgyzstan, which asked for some $200 million dollars to keep open Ganci airbase--100 times what the US had been paying previously.
Round One: Russia and China, by a knockout.
Olcott's book is fascinating, as much for what she does not say, as for what she does. For while she states that "Blame Lies with the Region's Leaders," (p.234), the data in her book equally support an alternative hypothesis which goes unstated: American policies have not only harmed Central Asia, they have damanged the strategic interests of the United States.
Evidence for this hypothesis can be found in remarks scattered throughout the text, like clues to a Sherlock Holms mystery. For example:
For a certain group of policy makers, those concerned with monitoring the democratic progress of these governments, the leaders in charge of these states have effectively become the enemy, men whose departure from political life was viewed as a good thing for their populations . . . The US foreign assistance strategy has led to much ill will on all sides, without substantially enhancing the capacity of either government or opposition to govern in a democratic fashion.(240)
Olcott's book seems to end suddenly--without a customary concluding chapter on p. 244. Instead of tying together loose ends, pages 245-387 present is a mass of raw data in appendices containing charts and graphs; footnotes with fascinating tidbits, and a valuable index.
This silence about her key message seems very Central Asian. If one digs through the data sets, one comes up with a picture of a region that is closer to the one presented by its authoritarian leaders than the one found in reports by NGOs such as Human Rights Watch or the International Crisis Group.
Central Asia is not poor. In fact, the region's economies are growing. There is considerable foreign investment, especially in oil, gas, and mining sectors.
Central Asia is not backwards. In fact, the countries enjoy literacy rates higher than the USA.
What is most striking is Oclott's evidence that Central Asian leaders have not invented the extremist Islamist threat in order to maintain power. The threat from extremism is real. Like Thailand during the Vietnam War, these countries have adopted authoritarian policies to prevent conflicts raging around them from exploding among their populations.
And Olcott almost says this--with caveats blaming Uzbek leadership failures--in a section called "Uzbekistan: Central Asia's Frontline State." Where she points out this little reported fact: "Uzbekistan was the only Central Asian state to join the US-led coalition that invaded Iraq, despite the fact that this damaged its relations with Russia and China."(177) In other words, attacks on Uzbekistan--including Andijan--were attacks on the US-led coalition.
There is more detail in Appendix 13, listing both official and unofficial Islamic organizations--some of which have documented ties to Al Qaeda in addition to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, for example the "Jamaat of Central Asia Mujahideen." This group, according to Olcott, "remains focused on terror acts in Central Asia." She also notes that Tajikistan's "Baiat" (covenant) has perpetrated terror attacks against both non-Muslims and "Muslim grops that it considers too moderate."
This is a book that I am sure to turn to again and again. It is a treasure trove of information that is useful to anyone attempting to understand why what is happening in small countries that are far, far away has relevance to the lives of ordinary Americans, and for improving chances for world peace.
