Book Description
For thousands of years the art of henna `tattoos' has been one of the best kept secrets of the Eastern world--recently `discovered' by rock stars, super models like Naomi Campbell, and celebrities Demi Moore and Liv Tyler. Now, you can make your next entrance more eye-catching: try a band around your upper arm, or a fluttering pattern along your waist. This kit will commence your initiation into the mysteries of the ancient practice of henna adornment, a safe, non-permanent, beautiful art form. Each kit contains two packets of henna powder with application cones to allow you to create intricate designs, Mehlabiya oil capsules and six transfer sheets of ancient and contemporary patterns to guide you.
Customer Reviews:
Very well put together.......2006-02-17
I have played with Henna before, and was looking for a good kit with a better explanation, history, and some insight as to how to shop for Henna products.
The kit comes with 2 cones of powder, 2 liquid mixtures and 1 bottle of oil(and some other stuff, including some cool designs that are discussed in detail in the book). After mixing the first batch, I realized it was too thick. No problem, just add fresh lemon juice until you have a smooth mixture that flows easily through the cone. The quality is great for beginners to play with and I found the cone to be well designed and easy to use.
The real plus for this product is the book that comes with it. Aileen is obviously very talented and someone for anyone who enjoys this art to aspire to. Her book is exquisite in all aspects, from the art history to the application explanations, from her designs to the photography, and from the quality of printing to her expert selection of models(their skin was flawless). I found exactly the info I was looking for.
Well worth the money I paid and an excellent addition to my growing library of Henna/Mehndi/Indigo Art. Thank you.
Buying for the second time.......2004-06-07
I liked this kit so much last summer that I'm purchased another for this summer. The amount of henna in the kit looks small, but as they say...a little goes a long way. I used it weekly on my ankle for about 6 months. I still have some left and plan to use that for at least another month. I always get compliments on my henna tattoos.
Disappointed.......2003-02-14
I was disappointed with the amount of henna & few transfers. I also wish the kit had a bottle with an applicator tip instead of it being it that little baggie thing. But the book is very pretty, as someone else said.
Wonderful.......2002-09-07
A big group of friends and I tried out this kit together and we had wonderful results. The henna went a very long way, much more so than I had expected. We had to mix a little water into the cones because they were a little too thick, but the rest of it worked great. You will want to reenforce the sides of the cones with tape before you start, because no matter what the seams (they are shaped zip lock bags) eventually give with the force of pushing the henna though the cone. We all had wonderful, dark orange results two and a half hours later. Leave the henna on longer than the author suggests, until it is mostly flaking off by itself (say 2 and a half to 3 hours).
Good luck!
Not impressive, overall..........2000-06-12
Although the book is very pretty, and contains some really nice designs, the henna kit was extremely disappointing. I followed the directions to a tee, and got very disappointing results as did all but one of my friends at my Henna party. Not recommended.

Book of the Dead..........2007-10-01
A must have amazing book for any zombie fan. Grab a copy before it grabs you were you least expect it!
Totally Awesome!!!!! A must have!!.......2007-09-02
If you love zombie movies, you NEED this book!! It has every zombie made in it, including sypnoses and alternate titles for all of them!! I ran through this book in a few days..so much great info, I cant speak highly enough of it!!!!!!!!!!!
For the Zombie fan.......2007-06-08
I got this as a gift for my Brother - in - Law who is a great fan of zombie movies in general, but also has a pretty good collection of Italian and other foreign made horror films. He said this book only provided him with more movies to look for and watch in his in - home movie theatre (with HD projector, a 10' wide screen, huge audio system and leather theatre seats). He's also been building up a cache of weapons in the past few years, but don't worry I'm SURE he's not crazy. Nope; he doesn't even laugh maniacally.
BRAAAAAIIIiiiinsss.......2007-06-06
Everything you wanted to know and didnt want to know about zombies is in this book. If you are a zombie fan, this book belongs on your shelf. It is worth the price alone for the "Zombie Filmography" which lists and gives a brief description on every zombie film ever made
Comprehensive.......2007-04-29
Other reviewers have pointed out how detailed this work is. I can only really say that I concur-this book has a fantastic level of detail for anyone who would like to explore all things zombie.
The book is a chronology of zombie events. It serves as a history guide to undead cinema but goes even further back to the origins of voodoo, discussing the written works of Lafcadio Hearn and William Seabrook. We are treated to a comprehensive review of what I would have to guess is every movie ever done all the way up to the latest installment from Romero and every other movie that has come up in the past few years.
An exhaustive filmography is another treat at the end of the book with a brief synopsis of each film. Excellent pictures and detailed analysis of every significant movie and pretty solid details on lesser movies make this tome absolutely essential for any fan.
Jamie Russell has made a reference work that for me will give me a chance to look at some lesser known but high quality films such as 'The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue' and 'Shockwaves' which I was unfortunately unaware of and also serves as a reminder of how incredible the works of Fulci were. I think any fan will find something new and intriguing to pour over in this fantastic book.

Book Description
This book by one of America's most thoughtful journalists explores the great voices of the twentieth century. From Sigmund Freud to Carl Jung, Albert Einstein to James Watson, Pablo Picasso to Mark Rothko, Virginia Woolf to Toni Morrison, George Gershwin to Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charlie Chaplin to Woody Allen, Cullum analyzes their gifts and their contribution to their own age. She also looks at giants of statecraft, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Nelson Mandela, who literally created new worlds.
Cullum delves into the importance of religion and spirituality in seminal lives. She discovers that a surprising number of painters and sculptors in the twentieth century have been obsessed with expressing universal truth in their work. And the spirit life, of course, was the essential force that fueled Gandhi and created his power to liberate India. It was that same spirit that reached across the years to inspire another liberator, Martin Luther King, Jr., in the United States.
Moral significance is what Lee Cullum finds in the turning of the century and the birth of the new millennium which is "a time of happiness and prosperity, an imagined golden age." Lee Cullum believes that a whole new golden age does indeed await us, if we can only imagine it. There is every reason for optimism.
Customer Reviews:
Flash and Trash.......2000-04-01
Note who has contributed the other reviews: politicians, journalists, hack writers. Lee Cullum offers glib, shallow, journalistic analysis. Every cliche you tune out when it appears on The Evening News or Charlie Rose is trooped out here. A litmus test of what the middlebrow thinks. Or rather what passes for thought with such a middlebrow. It's really a truimph of recycling. Cullum makes noises about the decline of civilization with the rise of postmodernism, and then fulfills her own prediction. Only in our era can the journalist actually pass for a thinker--with other journalists that is, who will make sure this book gets a royal sendoff. Change the channel.
An Incisive Look at Creativity in the 20th Century.......2000-02-22
Lee Cullum, who is frequently seen as a popular commentator and analyst on the Lehrer News Hour on PBS, has tackled an almost impossible task--and comes up with a rewarding look at creativity in the 20th Century. Her book gives no easy answers and requires careful reading. But it is a compendium of information which helps us put into some perspective how creativity works. The author gives high marks for creativity in the first part of the century, but is more pessimistic about the creative spark in the century's waning years. This is a book for thoughtful readers. You will find that even when you disagree with the author, you are prodded into thinking and recalling. Hers is a work of interpretation and synthesis across a broad spectrum ranging from the arts to psychology and politics.
A 20th Century Parade.......2000-02-08
Marshalling a parade of great personalities of the twentiethcentury, Lee Cullum's GENIUS CAME EARLY prepares us for newpossibilities.
Saying volumes in so few words, she shows brilliantly how ideas and movements interface, interact and influence one another. An example: "If Picasso, inventor of Cubism who took things apart and put them together again in a new way, can be called Freudian, bound to a masculine response to life, it was Matisse who celebrated woman in the spirit of Jung."
Lee Cullum's spiritual insights are profound: "It may be that the saint most antithetical to the twentieth century in its final unfolding is Michael, armed with his sword and the scales of justice. While reason continued to reign in the last half of the century through the triumph of technology, it was not sufficient to establish a moral order. The epoch, in fact, despite the discipline of science and engineering, was marked at its deepest level by disintegration of the human personality including its capacity for orderly thought. Genius had to contend with an atmosphere of spiritual and intellectual anarchy. What grander contradiction can there be than Michael and his scales of justice? Jung would call the trouble an inability to reconcile opposites -- male and female, light and dark, Apollonian control and Dionysian abandon. Hence the extreme experience of this century. St. Michael was called upon to slay the dragon and then to drink his blood, thus uniting with the enemy and putting an end to immature projection. Aspects thought to be alien had to be reckoned with on the inside, where it counts. Michael stood not only for justice, but for the integration of opposing forces. The inability of the twentieth century to grapple with these issues has led to a decline in theology. This must be traced in turn to a similar deterioration of philosophy, which has not ended but may as well have. Where Paul Tillich, Reinhold Niebuhr, Karl Barth and Martin Buber presided with elegance and profound genius over the serious thought of the first half of the era, the last decades have seen the rule of technique over insight, especially in the United States."
Lee Cullum's chapter "The Supremecy of Science" is especially illuminating. Being a nonscientist, I learned much, as she presents her subject clearly and understandably.
Lee Cullum's evaluations are balanced and thoughtful. An example: "As the age that began in Sarajevo drew to a close, negotiators, exhausted from the agonizing effort to end the Bosnian War, concluded that peace was more important than justice, that it mattered more to be normal than to be moral. But normalcy couldn't last."
All in all, Lee Cullum is optimistic about the world's future; but her optimism is leavened with these prophetic words: "Beauty will indeed save the world, as Dostoevesky predicted, and the twenty-first century, a Malraux predicted, 'will be spiritual or it will not be.'"
A splendid book, meaty and delicious! I chewed slowly, enjoying every bite, and will return for seconds, rereading parts, as there is much to digest and treasure.

Excellent writing, enlightening analysis.......2001-07-16
This is a wonderful book and should certainly have a place on anyone's Napoleonic bookshelf. It is almost certainly the best account available of the events of 1813-1814. Military and political events are properly balanced, with neither receiving too much or too little attention. The author is also able to draw about the characters themselves, especially Napoleon himself. Marshal Ney and Marshal Marmont receive their fair share, and the only real complaint I would have is that the author needlessly repeats the fact that Marshal MacDonald was the son of a Scottish clansman about a dozen times.

Steve Coll's Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 offers revealing details of the CIA's involvement in the evolution of the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the years before the September 11 attacks. From the beginning, Coll shows how the CIA's on-again, off-again engagement with Afghanistan after the end of the Soviet war left officials at Langley with inadequate resources and intelligence to appreciate the emerging power of the Taliban. He also demonstrates how Afghanistan became a deadly playing field for international politics where Soviet, Pakistani, and U.S. agents armed and trained a succession of warring factions. At the same time, the book, though opinionated, is not solely a critique of the agency. Coll balances accounts of CIA failures with the success stories, like the capture of Mir Amal Kasi. Coll, managing editor for the Washington Post, covered Afghanistan from 1989 to 1992. He demonstrates unprecedented access to records of White House meetings and to formerly classified material, and his command of Saudi, Pakistani, and Afghani politics is impressive. He also provides a seeming insider's perspective on personalities like George Tenet, William Casey, and anti-terrorism czar, Richard Clarke ("who seemed to wield enormous power precisely because hardly anyone knew who he was or what exactly he did for a living"). Coll manages to weave his research into a narrative that sometimes has the feel of a Tom Clancy novel yet never crosses into excess. While comprehensive, Coll's book may be hard going for those looking for a direct account of the events leading to the 9-11 attacks. The CIA's 1998 engagement with bin Laden as a target for capture begins a full two-thirds of the way into Ghost Wars, only after a lengthy march through developments during the Carter, Reagan, and early Clinton Presidencies. But this is not a critique of Coll's efforts; just a warning that some stamina is required to keep up. Ghost Wars is a complex study of intelligence operations and an invaluable resource for those seeking a nuanced understanding of how a small band of extremists rose to inflict incalculable damage on American soil. --Patrick O'Kelley
Book Description
To what extent did AmericaÂ's best intelligence analysts grasp the rising threat of Islamist radicalism? Who tried to stop bin Laden and why did they fail? Comprehensively and for the first time, Pulitzer PrizeÂ-winning journalist Steve Coll recounts the history of the covert wars in Afghanistan that fueled Islamic militancy and sowed the seeds of the September 11 attacks. Based on scrupulous research and firsthand accounts by key government, intelligence, and military personnel both foreign and American, Coll details the secret history of the CIAÂ's role in Afghanistan, the rise of the Taliban, the emergence of bin Laden, and the failed efforts by U.S. forces to find and assassinate bin Laden in Afghanistan.
Customer Reviews:
Current history come to life.......2007-10-11
Steve Coll has done an outstanding job in presenting the history of our relationship with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the Afghan freedom fighters and shows how that history foretells what is occurring in the world today.
Many other books about the rise of Osama Bin Laden are out there but this gives an honest depiction of who he was and is, how he came to power and what he uses to retain that power. It gives the reader a better understanding of the tribal nature of Afghanistan, the machinations of the intelligence services in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and how the Taliban came to rule after the Soviets were chased out. It also shows how the United States in the administration of Bill Clinton dropped the ball numerous times in understanding and dealing with terrorism. From the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 to the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000, Clinton did little to forestall further such events. The reader will see what roles Sandy Berger and Richard Clarke played in advising the president and yet the terrorism continued.
A few heroes are introduced- mainly from the CIA and Afghan tribes.
Steve Coll is an excellent writer and captures the reader with his excellent prose and command of the players and facts of the times
a fine place to start at understanding 9/11.......2007-09-30
on 9/12/2001 i figured that i should take a stab at getting a better picture in my head of the political turbulence that storms through the middle east. but i'm a lazy person. and such an undertaking seemed a chore. i have enough chores in my life, so i procrastinated. i bought a small stack of books on the topic over the years, but they only served to make me feel bad, because i really didn't want to read any of them. but this month, about 6 years later than it should have been, i took the plunge. I picked up steve coll's "Ghost Wars," and started reading the thing. well, lo and behold it was not a chore at all. the first 475 pages flew by with ease, pulling me along eagerly. mr coll builds a narrative momentum here, while threading complex strands of people, countries and events into a coherent whole, that is superlative. his portrait of the saudi, afganistan, and pakistani governments, and their interactions with the united states government was particularly well done and fascinating. my only complaint (and the reason i give this book 4 stars instead of 5) is that after the bombing of our warship in yemen by bin laden's group, the narrative suddenly grinds to a halt and becomes bogged down in about a hundred pages of overly detailed description relating to unsuccessful plots to get bin laden himself. since we all know that bin laden was not caught, this long stretch of failed planning simply takes up too much space at the end of the book, and is not all that interesting. that said, by all means read this book for the excitement and enlightenment cast in the first 475 pages or so. i believe this book to be about as good a place to start as any for someone looking to better understand the road that led us to 9/11.
issues to be informed about.............2007-09-23
Interesting. A must read. I hope Mr. Coll writes the next segment of Afghanistan's history from September 11, 2001 onward.
The book covers a lot of ground and is lengthy, but is well written and reads quickly. Coll outlines the people and policies (or, the lack thereof) from the Soviet chapter in Afghanistan until the day before September 11, 2001. Throughout the historical narrative, the book covers and addresses scary amounts of money flowing in and out of Afghanistan, the conflicts between the CIA, the State Dept. and other U.S. agencies/policymakers in addressing issues related to Afghanistan, the Taleban, Al Q, and Bin Laden, and who understood what and when related to Al Q, Bin Laden, et al. Coll also critically addresses the roles of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in U.S. policy considerations, and those countries policies toward Afghanistan/knowledge of Al Q and Bin Laden.
Beyond the headlines, I was not very well informed on the history of Afghanistan. This book will bring the reader up to speed very quickly.
Unbeliveable history of Afghanistan.......2007-08-17
Don't be scared away by the 600+ pages. It flows freely and is really a riviting historical read. It provides quite a narrative on the history of this area and the difficult political and military situations that the US, Pakistan, Soviet Union and other influcencal Middle East countries had in this area of the world..
Ghost Wars.......2007-07-14
Ghost Wars is an account of U.S. assistance to the mujahedin during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and U.S. attempts to curtail Osama bin Laden's influence. Ghost Wars focuses on the CIA but author Steve Coll, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who covered Afghanistan for the Washington Post between 1989 and 1992, also covers the interagency policy making process in Washington.
The U.S. policy of helping the mujahedin in Afghanistan harass and ultimately defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan was, of course, a success. U.S. officials realized that the contending forces in Afghanistan were unlikely to form a unified national government after the Soviet's departure, but the United States was in Afghanistan to hurt the Soviet Union, not to build a new nation in Afghanistan. U.S. assistance efforts in Afghanistan were advanced by two allies, in particular, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Coll argues that, while the allies' interests coincided in containing Soviet expansion, U.S. interests were hurt by the efforts of Pakistan's intelligence service (the ISI) to strengthen radical Islamists after the Soviet collapse in Afghanistan and by Saudi Arabia's unwillingness to confront radical Islamists at home and in Afghanistan.
Coll criticizes U.S. policy in Afghanistan on several grounds. First, the United States relied heavily on the ISI to deliver assistance to the mujahedin, despite the ISI's preference for radical jihadists. Second, the United States' reliance on Saudi oil made it too hard for the United States to confront its ally over terrorism policies. Third, the United States missed opportunities to engage India as a democratic ally in South Asia. Fourth, the United States failed to develop "a strategy for engagement, democratization, secular education, and economic development among the peaceful but demoralized populations of the Islamic world."
U.S. policy toward bin Laden, in particular, could also be criticized for a lack of coherence. Coll's narrative describes a reluctance to give unambiguous instructions to kill bin Laden, even though capturing him alive would have been nearly impossible. Numerous opportunities arose to attack bin Laden but policymakers always demurred because they were reluctant to offend other governments or risk civilian deaths. At one point, referring to bin Laden, CIA director George Tenet announces that "We are at war," but the resources and single-minded determination that this announcement implies never materialized.
