The illustrations are good; Fleisher is clearly an adept artist. However, what he doesn't have are creative ideas. It would be better if he could get an "idea person" to describe some concepts, and then they could work together on refining it.

This book is like watching America's Funniest Home Videos while watching a Piccolo Pete fizzle.

Very little cleverness, and doesn't make up for it with decent art. If you're a Gorey/JTHM fan, let this one pass.

Between Nixon and Carter the Ford editorial cartoon years.......2003-05-11

Editorial cartoons might not be the first thing people turn to when they open up their newspaper (that honor would go to the regular comics page or the sports section), but they are probably the first thing you turn to when you get to the editorial page (how can it now be? It is usually the only visually compelling image there unless you are really enraptured by a small photograph of George Will). But the 1976 edition of "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year" celebrates the art form from the historical perspective, because we are over a quarter-century beyond the events of 1975. Whatever you remember from that year, when First Lady Betty Ford was more popular than the President and the strongest Democratic hopeful for the Presidency was a southerner (George Wallace and not Jimmy Carter), will come flooding back as you go through these pages. This is because nothing brings back the passions of an issue like a good editorial cartoon, and there are several examples to prove the point within these pages.

This pictorial history of the year's events is broken down into 26 major news stories, including the ups and downs of the Ford Administration, the machination of the CIA and the FBI, the energy crisis, and the growing parade of contenders for the Presidency. You will also see that some things apparently never change, such as the continuing strife in the Middle East and the controversial U.S. Congress. But ultimately what sticks out are those issues that were more specific to the year 1975, such as Nelson Rockerfeller becoming the lame duck Vice President, detente, and the end of the Vietnam War. There were also the assassination attempts on Ford, the bailout of New York City, the preparation for the nation's bicentennial, court-ordered busing in Boston, and the capture of Patty Hearst, all of which made the year rather unique.

This was actually only the fourth volume of this annual series focusing on the best of the year's editorial cartoons. For once Garry Trudeau's "Doonsbury" makes it into this collection, by virtue of his Pulitzer Prize award: the strip selected shows the stonewall being built in front of the Nixon White House, which is as fine a representation of the four panel editorial cartoon as you can find (there is even an editorial cartoon cartoon attacking Trudeau's win on page 153). Mike Peters won the 1974 Sigma Delta Chi Award and you will also find examples by Herblock, Pat Oliphant, and my personal favorite, Jeff MacNelly. One thing you will notice is that overall the editorial cartoonists of today are a lot better artists than most of what you see in this collection. However, you will discover a few cartoonists with distinctive styles that you will enjoy, such as Graham Pilsworth, Hugh Hayne, and David Simpson. Besides, the President with the most iconic set of molars in the history of the nation was just around the corner.

Good compilation of current humor, but not about Wall Street.......1997-11-08

If you're around jokesters or if you trade jokes over e-mail with friends, you've probably heard or read at least half of the jokes in this book. Still, it is a nice collection of mostly contemporary material. If your conception of the book, based on the title, is that the jokes are about the financial industry in some way, they aren't. In fact, due to the political incorrectness of some material, it's no wonder the authors are anonymous.

This volume attempts an introduction to 20th century hymnody in the US with an overview of the issues of concern to the hymnists. Its core, however, is interviews (or previous publications for deceased hymnists) with selected authors: Carl P. Daw, Jr.; Timothy Dudley-Smith; Sylvia Dunstan; Martin Franzmann; Fred Pratt Green; Fred Kaan; Erik Routley; Thomas H. Troeger; Jaroslav J. Vajda; and Brian A. Wren. The emphasis is, obviously, mainline Protestant but with sufficient diversity to provide a reasonable overview. The bibliographic information provided is excellent, providing the necessary information to follow up on authors who catch your imagination.

a romance novel with a kid?.......2001-05-17

who wants to read a romance with a little boy on the cover? i did, because i'd read salonen's previous book and thoroughly enjoyed it. and i don't ordinarily like to read about little kids, but brady seemed to be a real person, and of course the 2 adults in the story (you gotta have a romance, right?) behaved in just the right ways! the ending was a surprise (which is not something you can say about most romances!) and i immediately ordered salonen's newest, back in kansas.

Debra Salomen's latest offers 297 pages filled with intrigue, good plotting, and great characters. You'll have a hard time putting this book down once you crack it open.

Lawrence "Ren" Bishop is a rising star in politics. Two years ago he spent the night with a mysterious woman who called herself "Jewel" and wants to make certain said night won't come back to haunt him at reelection time. Ren hires his PI friend Bo to find Jewel and ascertain whether or not she's a potential blackmail threat. When Bo returns with the news that Jewel's real name is Julia and that she was killed in a boating accident, Ren feels saddened rather than relieved. His sadness then turns to shock when Bo announces that Julia gave birth to a son named Brady roughly nine months to the day of their fling...

Bookstore owner Sara Carsten has been raising her nephew Brady since her sister and brother-in-law were tragically killed. She thinks nothing of it when a man named Bo and his handsome friend Ren start hanging around her bookstore. Sara finds her thoughts turning more and more to Ren as the days progress, so naturally she is devastated when he confesses who he is and why he sought her out to begin with. Ren might be able to do things to her heart that she hadn't thought possible, but there was no way on earth she was giving up Brady without a fight...

Lawrence "Ren" Bishop is a third generation judge, but unlike his now deceased father who seemingly loved the bench, Ren finds it tedious, especially the performing lawyers. He loves the law and would relish returning to environmental law. However, his mother has political ambitions for him and he hates disappointing her. Ren knows one indiscretion two years ago when he had the only one night-stand in his life with Jewel could end his political career. Now his best friend private investigator Bo Lester informs him that Jewel was the married Julia Carsten Hovant, dead in a speedboat accident. That shocker is topped by the fact that Julia gave birth to a boy that mathematically could mean Ren is a father. Julia's sister Sara raises the child.

Though the book seems closed, Ren's conscience bothers him. He needs closure about the child and is not sure what he will do if the lad is his. However, when he meets Sara, Ren feels his world has turned upside down due to the immense attraction. She feels it too, but Ren is engaged to a news reporter and has ambitions that mean he can't have Sara even if he loves her.

HIS DADDY'S EYES is an entertaining contemporary romance that stars two wonderful lead charcaters. Ren is going through an adult crisis wondering if it is time to take his own path. Sara is a fabulous female lead player though a bit too perfect as she raises her nephew and always provides a helping hand. Together, they are a wonderful team struggling with life's uncertainties. Bo and his friend Claudie provide energy and a deserved sequel. Debra Salonen provides the audience with a strong tale of love.

engaging legal romance .......2004-09-14

In San Diego, Attorney Juliet McNeil defends client Eaton James, CEO of Terracotta Industries by discrediting key prosecution witness Blake Ramsden. It was not easy to remain professional as over eight years ago the independent Juliet shared a one night stand with Blake leading to her intelligent precocious and always in trouble in school daughter Mary Jane. Blake went overseas for a few years and is unaware that he sired a child.

Not long afterwards, Blake finds himself in need of a solid defense attorney and based on her recent court performance, he hires Juliet to defend him. As they work closely on his case, they fall in love, but she fears his reaction when he learns the truth about Mary Jane.

This engaging legal romance stars two fine independent protagonists and a delightful matchmaking child who has attended four schools in three year (Guinness beckons for Mary Jane). The story line is more legal than romance as Juliet sets the tone of the client-lawyer relationship by insisting on no hanky panky while she defends him. Though that seems realistic and ethical, the romantic relationship takes off late, but is fun as the two adults struggle between the case and the libido.

Remarkable masterpiece.......2000-05-03

Murphey should get an astounding applause for his work. There is an incredible appeal that 'drains' you right into the pages of endless original arguments. The Ottoman Devlet (not Empire if you read the book carefully, I borrowed Maksudoglu terms for the Ottoman) finally received a fair judgement for their history. The research was acurately done with rare details, those which never surfaced before, which cleared out any pontless subjectivity mostly found on previous studies of the Ottomans. 'The sick man' was made 'sick' in the first place.

The rationalization of the Ottoman military might was the best part in the book. I am not surprised if this work becomes a classic.

Best study of Ottoman warfare in print.......1999-11-17

Rhoads Murphey clears up a lot of mystification brought into the subject by authors who previously relied solely upon Western sources for understanding the Ottoman state. Some, for example, would talk about the Ottoman Empire as the perfect military state, designed around conquest, and others, thinking more of Ottoman decline, of the corruption, inefficiency, and lack of technical skill of their forces. Yet, a study of Ottoman history reveals, naturally, that neither of these extremes were true, and that the Ottomans had to contend with many of the same difficulties, military and administrative, that all of the western European states were attempting to overcome. For someone who really wants to learn how the Ottomans achieved what the did, and failed to achieve some of their more ambitious goals, this book is refreshing in that it teaches rather than obscures.

A fine book, worth the long wait.......2007-06-17

For whatever reason, this has been a long time coming: its arrival has been rumoured for years. Finally it is here, and the result amply fulfils the anticipation. Professor Aksan's scholarship in journal articles and detailed archival work provides a sure foundation for a study with a great range, over both time and space.

At no point does the quality or insight of the narrative falter, and reaching the author's conclusion in 1870, this reader's feelng is: what a pity it could not extend for another two decades to take in the events of the 1870s and 1880s. Few books of six hundred pages read so easily and with such assurance.

At last, students will have a reliable and usable text that will fill the vast gaps that hitherto existed in the study of Ottoman warfare. It redresses the imbalance created by the plethora of good work on the 16th and 17th centuries. Now the Ottoman military role and campaigning in the later period can be properly assessed, as Aksan provides a corrective to earlier (and sometimes mistaken) views of the military and Ottoman society. She shows how a number of western 'reformers' hired by the Ottomans presented a skewed and usually egotistical view of Ottoman capacity. By contrast, Habsburg commanders who experienced the sharp edge of Ottoman tenacity, speed, and courage in battle had a rather less dismissive view.

The author has synthesised a huge body of published material (although the coverage of German language sources is quite slender). The MODERN WARS IN PERSPECTIVE series has produced a series of remarkable books: this ranks with the very best.

There's Something Rotten in the State of Ohio.......2006-09-27

In his book "Armed Madhouse..." author Greg Palast quotes Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. "It's not the votes that count. It's who counts the votes." After you read the dry but factual 116 pages of this book, you will come to the inescapable conclusion that the election was stolen from presidential candidate John Kerry and given to Mr. Bush.

The book is divided into facts (what happened) and analysis (the motive and how it could have happened). It starts with Ohio's secretary of state, a republican, Kenneth Blackwell who promised to "fill in the blanks" regarding voting anomalies but has kept silent in the finest tradition of "political omerta." He has refused to initiate any investigations, and has tried his best to have the ballots destroyed.

Here's some of what Conyers uncovers:

Republican challengers were at every precinct causing massive voting delays. This is called caging, and it is illegal. Republican challengers targeted 97% of new voters in black areas. They only challenged 14% of new voters in white areas.

There were voting machine lockdowns preventing observation of ballot counts. This too is illegal.

There were flipped votes. Voters reported that they had voted for Kerry and watched their vote register for George Bush. These "glitches" were called "calibration problems."

The number of votes vs. voters. In many places the number of voter turn-out exceeded 100%. (?) In one case nearly 19,000 votes were added after all precincts reported.

There were repairs being made by the electronic voting machine company while the ballots were being recounted. This too is illegal.

In Ohio the exit polls which asked the people how they voted, showed that Kerry had won. Men and women voters gave a majority to Kerry. These polls are usually very accurate. So, how did exit polls that put Kerry ahead 52% to 48% turn around after the ballots were counted?

After reading this book, you can only arrive at one conclusion: There's something rotten in the state of Ohio.

Update: Blackwell ran for governor in Ohio this past November and was defeated. Those ballots he could not manage to hide.

A Thousand Bird Sites.......2000-06-24

I am a casual birder, and found this book to be very valuable in increasing my knowledge of birds and birding, not so much for the books content itself, but what it directs you to. It is full of web sites devoted to birds, and gives a review of each site so you don't waste your time going to a site you may not be interested in. It is a valuable resource, not only for beginners, but for the advanced birder as well. I highly recommend it.
