Customer Reviews:
Disappointed with mis-leading information.......2007-05-07
I bought this book because it comes with a CD which contains some high res images. However due to their policy, I won't be able to use them in my publication--they are not royalty free.
The book says the reader can buy off the images for a minimun cost but when I spoke with the people they said I can't. I'll have to tell them why, when, where in the publication, all these questions...I'm too tired of this game. I gave this book away because I can simply use water color to do my own art which surely comes out better, and I can do it anytime I want, why the hassle?
I would not recommend you to buy this book if you think you can use the CD.
Sorry, not being harsh, just telling the truth.

Book Description
This volume is a fascinating, interpretative study of the life of the Prophet Muhammad as depicted in the repertoire of fifty-one contemporary Egyptian singers. The repertoire is extremely diverse and ranges from narrative ballads, classical odes, and Qurcanic chantings, to melodies of the secular songs of well-known Egyptian singers. The `people's' Muhammad appears as both a commanding figure, empowered by the supernatural, and a touchingly vulnerable human being, and provides this study with excellent material for its discussion of a subject that has not received much serious scholarly attention to date.

Book Description
The rise of more commercially-based, global media has significant implications for the child audience. Many are concerned that the traditions of public service, quality and diversity in children's television are under threat. Based on an extensive research project, this book provides a critical review of the history of children's television in the UK, and a realistic assessment of its future prospects. It looks at how broadcasters have defined the child audience; at the changes in children's programing; at the impact of competition and new technologies; and at the role of audience research. The book intervenes in contemporary debates about the regulation of children's television.

Brzenzinski's Blueprint for US domninance - follwe to the T by Bush.......2007-07-09
Everyone should read this book.
In the late 90's Brzenzinski gave his plan for how the US should dominate the world.
Bush has followed it to a T.
Interesting - Democrats plan - Republicans execution.
Fantastic that all the news sources have pretty much given it a pass.
B explains that to get the US people to attack middle asia - which he feels we must - it will take a Perl Harbor class event.
He also explains why it is necessary to dislodge governments friendly to Russia from the countries near russia.
Read it and think
ruthless.......2007-06-26
The mind of a ruthless pragmatist. Many quotations from this book online, and I have some on my own website. I wanted to read the whole context. Chomsky considered Brzezinski "brilliant", but ruthless. Brilliant, not dull or crude like some Neocons, in terms of someone committed to the hard rule of corporate globaliztion, and the management of democratic populations by all means of deception.
We've always been at war with Eastasia.
Neo-Cons agree -- mass-murder is helpful to their agenda........2007-05-23
This book is a great insight into the repulsive thought process behind the Neo-Con Faction's tyrannical agenda. It's the underlying evil lurking in the shadows of economic globalization. Back in 1997, this book stated that in order to maintain global primacy, the US needed to gain control of Central Asia with it's vast petroleum reserves, and that a "New Pearl Harbor" would be helpful in getting the American public to support their callous imperial efforts. Unfortunately, the deaths of 3,100+ Americans was; sickeningly, all to HELPFUL in bringing upon an unjust war that continues to needlessly claim the lives of thousands of American & Allied soldiers, not to mention, the lives of over 655,000 Iraqis since the war began. The Neo-Cons of this administration should have been first to go on that HELP list. Without them, 9/11 & the war would not have been possible. These boys deserve nothing more than to be next on that HELP list. We need to make sure they never again will have the ability to profit from their BIG LIES intentionally meant to start these murder frenzies we call war. That's right, and I'm not being radical when I say this. Just truthful. All the top dogs which helped plan, carry out, or knowingly cover-up these psy-ops war games should stand trial for several thousand counts of 1st degree murder, wrongful death, & high treason. Then we should seek the death penalty for those found guilty, just like anyone else who plots & succeeds in the act of murder. These boys ARE -- WITHOUT A DOUBT -- THE TERRORISTS who attacked the United States on 9/11 & then tried to LIE their way out of it with their fictitious investigation called "The 9/11 Commission Report". They eliminated over 100 important FACTS about what REALLY happened, & then put it off onto 19 radical Muslims for which they seemed to have pulled from a hat. At least 6 of these hijackers have been found alive & none of them were listed as passengers on any of the flight lists. Hmm. Looks more like some radical crypto-fascists are crudely scattering to cover the blood soaked trails that lead back to the front doors of their elaborate estates.
"Insider" information available in 19 languages??.......2007-02-11
First and foremost, I largely agree with most, if not all, of these reviews. Brzeinski's analysis is straightforward, clear and concrete. He frankly discusses American Empire, and treats ethnicity as strategic tool to be harnessed and implemented, and for military power to be exerted, if not always with an overt disregard for this funny thing called international credibility.
Occassionally, he injects a dose of realistic observations about our hegemony, such as the ill-advised removal of all overseas military forces and the ensuing global violence that would result, despite the clear and obvious American benefits in retaining these positions. (A point most will find difficult to argue).
Furthermore, as another reviewer stated, he often explores his disucussion of desirable American interests under the guise of "vital" interests, selling his policy recommendations in the form of a righteous and necessary application of America's global "responsibility".
For me, the greatest insights to be gained from his analyses are involved in the first chapter. They set the stage for the kind of global, uninhibited and large scale perspectives necessary in trying to understand how to feed, house, clothe and employ 6.2 billion human beings and the issues large scale governments must grapple with in fulfilling these goals. The specific issues regarding each region are his own, to be learned, discussed and explored amidst other ways of accomplishing these global objectives. But for the casual reader, the perspectives he employs, and the criteria used to support his judgments are far more useful than the particular policy recommendations.
It is here where my main argument lies. While his credibility is undeniable, is it the basking satisaction in which all readers share in "knowing" the SPECIFICS of American policy, which astounds me. Published in 30+ countries?? Far from being information warranting a top level security clearance that threatens U.S. strategies, this "treasure trove" of secret policy information is available to anyone with a credit card and internet access.
Again, I heavily stress that the perspectives employed are educational and insightful (my own policy experience warrants nothing but a desire to learn), and Brzezinski is to be fully explored for sure. It's just that the availability of this kind of information, from this source, in such wide distribution, should warrant a high degree of cynicism. Its seems to encounter the realm of propaganda for corporate elites, and act as an eerily effective potential diversion to others. In contrast, I pose that this analysis should have garnered this kind of response if it were available in the 1980's.
Case in point: there is no discussion on the impact that international financial centers, South America and Africa have in helping to determine his Eurasian strategy. Dealing with Iran, for example, has global ties to Africa and South America, in addition to the rest of Eurasia; issues Brzezinski never touches here. To have such a gross absence of focus cannot be attributed to any fault on his analysis or scope. Instead, I give him the utmost respect for his credibility, and assume that it's exceedingly more likely he left them out intentionally. Everyone's focus is on the Iraq war and Iran. And while I would be more than ludicrous to deny its high level of importance(or profitability), where aren't we looking?? I strongly feel this book's emphasis is deterring attention from other places and believe really, that the issues he discusses were largely put into place before the time of this book's writing (1997). Be wary of other reviews that tell you this is the "real" stuff.
If you are looking for a great analysis in how geopolitical objectives were assessed and considered in the 1980s or some 1990s, and the general perspectives, this is one of many great sources of information. If you are looking to understand policy in 2040 (meaing the policies being instituted right now), this serves largely as historical background. Highly, highly recommended, but understand why such 'critical' and 'exclusive' information is available in 19 different languages.
American Empire.......2006-07-22
Zbigniew Brzezinski's book "The Grand Chessboard: American primacy and its geostrategic imperative" serves as a blueprint for 21st century U.S. foreign policy. In the book, Brzezinski, a former National Security advisor to President Jimmy Carter, argues that Eurasia is the keystone to America's future as the world's first and (according to Brzezinski) possibly last global superpower. Eurasia is thus the geography-based chessboard upon which the "Grand Game" is to be played and Brzezinski's premise is that the United States and its allies are competing for global hegemony against other coalitions and major powers - principally Russia, China and Japan. Brzezinski states:
"It is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges, capable of dominating Eurasia and thus also of challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book."
The roots of Brzezinski's Eurasian-centric worldview can be traced to his own personal background as an exile from Nazi/Soviet occupied Poland and also from the well known geopolitical discussions that were held in the early years of the previous century when Halford Mackinder and Karl Haushofer each weighed in on the underpinnings of geopolitics. The pedigree of Brzezinski's book therefore appears to be largely based on realist power politics. However, I would argue that Brzezinski's prescriptions for continued American global hegemony are aligned more in the vein of multilateralist liberal internationalism than the hardcore realist and unilateralist approaches of Mackinder and Haushofer.
A recurring theme runs through the entire book - what seems to be Brzezinski's pervasive and poorly substantiated imperative for America to rescue the world from itself. Furthermore, Brzezinski's call for American empire is based on a very weak discussion of vital, versus desirable, American national interests. Brzezinski also discloses a complete disregard for the populous and resource-rich continents of South America and Africa in his geopolitical musings about the need to oppose a future Eurasian competitor.
Brzezinski frequently acknowledges the American public's reticence for empire, but nonetheless relentlessly presses for the continuation and even expansion of American global hegemony. He also hints about, but does not explore, the visceral and militant Islamic opposition to American hegemony spanning a wide swath of the planet. Like most critiques of Mackinder's and Haushofer's ideas, Brzezinski shows no inclination to analyze events from a non-Western perspective. What China, Russia or Japan think about the writings of Mackinder and Haushofer is explored in few, if any, Western-oriented readings on geopolitics - just as Brzezinski fails to explore his exhortations of American empire in any alternate light of non-Western attitudes and reactions. He explores his ideas from a consistently Western viewpoint, seemingly nonchalant about how his aggressive grand plans may be interpreted from Beijing, Moscow or Tokyo. He extols America's democratic, economic, military and cultural virtues and ignores any vices whatsoever. Maybe we don't have any.
