I love the Far Side...and this has many of my favorites!

5 stars all the way

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Weiner Wackiness!.......2006-08-01

This is the best Far Side Book ever, IMO. It's a must for any fans of the weiner dog, and for those looking for a good laugh in general. Plus, it's got my seven-year-old interested in reading. He wants to know what's going on in the cartoons, so he has to read the captions (but sometimes the humor is lost on him!). Classic Larson, and lots of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Far Side of the Wiener Dog.......2006-04-21

Imagine, if you will, a book containing a selection of Far Side illustrations. Further imagine that the center portion of this book contains eight full color images of wiener dogs as various artists, such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso, could have imagined them. If you can imagine a book such as this, you will have entered the wiener dog zone.

Gary Larson has always been one of the most imaginative cartoonists of any era. This collection contains more than 180 Gary Larson illustrations that, as with all Gary Larson collections, run from subtle puns to bizarre perspectives. How about Wharf Cows scampering the ropes that tie ships to docks? Or perhaps a scene from Giraffes IV, where they are out for more than acacia leaves?

If there is a drawback to this collection, it is that the two volume set "The Complete Far Side 1080 - 1994" is a more cost effective way to buy all of Gary Larson's cartoons. Unfortunately for me, I already have six or eight or perhaps more Gary Larson collections already. Maybe I'll just keep on buying them. I know I keep reading them. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars must have for a daschund owner.......2006-02-19

The Far Side is the greatest comic of all time and this makes a great coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars Random.......2004-11-15

That is the only word that can begin to describe Gary Larson and his thought process when putting together these collections. For the most part this compilation of cartoons is standard Far Side material. What makes this collection outstanding is the full color cartoons located in the center of the book. This collection of "art" is all about wiener dogs taking the place of other objects/people in history. Some of these pictures and commentaries such as "Bottle, Apple, Book, and Bowl of Wiener Dogs" are priceless. A must have for any Larson fans.

5 out of 5 stars More than just fluff.......2003-11-22

I was tired of the single scene and a friend bought me this book as a joke. I expected it to be one of those silly pieces of fluff that tells women to get manicures and go shopping to feel better about themselves. It is funny, but actually has advice for how to find a date. I tried out one of the "approach tactics" while I was on the subway and it worked! I was single for almost two years and now I'm happy to say, I snagged myself a hottie thanks to her book! It's also got this really cute guy-to-english dictionary that's hilarious!

                5 out of 5 stars Field Guide...or more??.......2003-11-22

A friend of mine bought me the Official Hottie Hunting Field Guide for my birthday this year. I thought it was hilarious, insightful, and actually helpful -- I got a date by using one of the tactics. I didn't think much about it again until another friend forwarded me this email from some crazy guy claiming that the book was encoded with all these secret messages by the government. I definitely read it again, but didn't see anything strange. Maybe I have a copy of a really rare secret government document! Stranger things have happened!

                1 out of 5 stars Hunt less...........2003-06-23

I did not care for this book, although it is well written and cute, because of its overall message of promiscuity for women and treating men as objects to be hunted. The author is well versed and entertaining, but I disagree with the message. Only for those interested in getting a man in life.

5 out of 5 stars The bible of dating.......2002-06-25

Dr. Gilford has revolutionized the world of dating. For many years, women have heeded conflicting advice and poor strategy when 'hunting' potential mates. Dr. Gilford's education and experience will prove invaluable for any hottie hunter.

The world of hottie hunting can be dangerous and intimidating for an amateur. This field guide shifts the advantage to the hunter, as they can identify the hottie from a distance, and the guide presents a plethora of approach options at the hunter's fingertips.

Personally, I fear for the hunters that don't possess Dr. Gilford's guide. Don't hunt without it!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the ladies..........2002-06-11

This book is an insightful and humorous take on the oft- overlooked area of pre-dating. While it appears that this book is intended for the hottie huntress out there, my friends and I found it useful for determining our own categorization. It was also invaluable as a guide of 'what-not-to-do' in efforts to appear attractive to the opposite sex. Now while I am sure the author has written this guide with her tongue planted firmly in-cheek, I can't help but marvel at the real-world practicality of it. With humor and whimsy, Ms. Gilford seems to have achieved what no other 'dating' book could - she forced us to not take ourselves to seriously. This book makes a great gift for the girl who keeps dating the wrong guys, or the guy who can't seem to get any girls.

As a nuts-and-bolts operagoer's guide, Denis Forman's book is richly incisive. It's equally satisfying as a tart, effervescent take on the solemn world of opera.

The author--a British television executive and former deputy chairman of the Royal Opera House--covers most of the likely offerings of your local repertory company, with a few questionable omissions (Peter Grimes) and inclusions (The Threepenny Opera). For each he provides a synopsis, musical highlights, critical remarks, and historical information (the premiere of Il Trovatore: "stupendous"; that of Norma: "a flop"). Another section offers comments on everything from the craze for authenticity to the practice of booing.

Forman's opinions sometimes run athwart of convention. Falstaff "has no sex appeal and no heart, and opera demands both these qualities"; Tristan und Isolde is the creation of "the Wagner that liked to spend time stroking velvet." His tone, especially in the synopses, is often evocative of Anna Russell's opera parodies: "It really is too bad of you Tristan to die on me like this. She passes out."

The prose can be cute, but that fits Forman's approach of puncturing the inflated atmosphere of opera while glorying in it. Though he is most entertaining when he's daring to shout in church, his enthusiasms are as illuminating as his barbs. "Traviata is the first grown-up opera about contemporary life," he says, adroitly locating that work in operatic history. In Don Giovanni, "Mozart brought terror to the opera stage for the first time." It's the book's greatest pleasure that Forman's passion is matched by his knowledge. --David Olivenbaum

                Book Description

With an encyclopedic knowledge of opera and a delightful dash of irreverence, Sir Denis Forman throws open the world of opera--its structure, composers, conductors, and artists--in this hugely informative guide. A Night at the Opera dissects the eighty-three most popular operas recorded on compact disc, from Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur to Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. For each opera, Sir Denis details the plot and cast of characters, awarding stars to parts that are "worth looking out for," "really good," or, occasionally, "stunning." He goes on to tell the history of each opera and its early reception. Finally, each work is graded from alpha to gamma (although the Ring cycle gets an "X"), and Sir Denis has no qualms about voicing his opinion: the first act of Fidelio is "a bit of a mess," while the last scene of  Don Giovanni "towers above the comic finales of Figaro and Così and whether or not [it] is Mozart's greatest opera, it is certainly his most powerful finale."
The guide also presents brief biographies of the great composers, conductors, and singers. A glossary of musical terms is included, as well as Operatica, or the essential elements of opera, from the proper place and style of the audience's applause (and boos) to the use of surtitles.
A Night at the Opera is for connoisseurs and neophytes alike. It will entertain and inform, delight and (perhaps) infuriate, providing a subject for lively debate and ready reference for years to come.

3 out of 5 stars Sound bites about opera.......2007-02-06

The author seemed to want to be cute and quotable rather than offer a reasoned perspective on opera. At times I felt he even became condescending in his attitude. This could have been a misguided attempt to counter the widely held opinion that opera is only for snobs, but people with that opinion wouldn't read his book anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible and entertaining opera guide.......2007-01-09

An excellent source for budding opera buffs. Enjoyable, pithy, informative.

                5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2006-12-12

I see no reason to bore you with a longish disquisition on the merits of this entertaining book. (The reviewer 'Starmoth' has selected some nice bon mots from Forman's work, and he's reviewed it in a long review that outlines its strengths and weaknesses, such as they are, without inducing boredom.) Forman is both witty and insightful. He gives the reader useful information, as well as less useful information (e.g., when he tells us what to listen for, according to his tastes). But most of what he says is conveyed with humour and commonsense. Keep in mind that it is far too huge to serve as a guide; it requires a briefcase or backpack and not a pocket.

Are there problems? Well, sometimes he's pretty flippant. And there are a considerable number of great operas -- not just ones I like but ones in the repetoire of all major opera houses -- that don't get treated. Perhaps these are not fair complaints. For one thing, Forman's flippant remarks are often entertaining and interesting. And for another, it IS his book, so who am I to complain about omissions, or about an author who states in his subtitle that it is an irreverent work?

                5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Gift!.......2006-11-10

This book is the perfect gift for a new opera fan. It does a great job of describing each opera, including history and reviews, but in a language anyone can understand. Seasoned opera buffs will enjoy the light-hearted overviews and insights. Fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars This is amusing and fun!!.......2005-11-19

This is still one of my favorite opera books in a comprehensive collection of huge, serious, books on opera. What fun I had reading it from cover to cover as I love the humor Forman sticks in everywhere. Maybe you need to have more than a beginning knowledge of the sport to get the most out of this book. It's just extremely amusing and well worth adding to your collection along with the Kobbe, etc., etc. Opera is my favorite sport and this is one of my favorite authors. I'd love to sit in a group, glass of wine in hand, and listen to him give his opinions on all things operatic - come to think of it, reading his book is like listening to a great conversationalist on the subject. If you know opera, you'll chuckle throughout the book.

                            Book Description

'No division has contributed more to the downfall of the Axis Powers and to the total defeat of Germany. The Desert Rats saw service in the Middle East when Italy declared war on Britian in 1940. They fought with great distinction all through the long campaign which culminated in the victory of Alamein. They took a leading part in the pursuit of Rommel's defeated forces and in the final breakthrough to Tunis. The division was the first British Armoured Division to land in Europe when it took part in the assault landing at Salerno. It served through the Italian campaign till brought back to England early in 1944 to prepare the great assault on Western Europe.' So wrote the GOC of the Desert Rats, Major General L.O. Lyne, in Berlin during the Allied victory parades. The Desert Rats, the 7th Armoured Division, wore its famous insignia of the jerboa, the long-tailed rodent, with pride. The 7th, the most famous British formation of the Second World War, was Winston Churchill's favorite. Patrick Delaforce presents numerous first-hand accounts of the terrible struggle in Normandy including Operations 'Goodwood' and 'Bluecoat' and of the break-out and great 'Swan' to liberate all northern France and Belgium. He describes the taking of Ghent, and the long months of fighting in the Peel country in the Netherlands; Operation 'Blackcock', the crossing of the Rhine and the advance through Germany; the capture of Hamburg, and the Allies' final triumphant entry into Berlin.

                                Book Description

This is a compelling behind-the-scenes account of the extraordinary Castro brothers and the impending dynastic succession of Fidels younger brother Raul. Brian Latell, the CIA officer who has followed Castro since the sixties, gives an unprecedented view into Fidel and Rauls remarkable relationship, revealing how they have collaborated in policy making, divided responsibilities, and resolved disagreements for more than 40 yearsa challenge to the notion that Fidel always acts alone. Latell has had more access to the brothers than anyone else in this country, and his briefs to the CIA informed much of U.S. policy. Based on his knowledge of Raul Castro, Latell makes projections on what kind of leader Raul would be and how the shift in power might influence U.S.-Cuban relations. Woven into this story is a riveting account of what life was like as a U.S. undercover agent in Cuba.

                                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not much about Raul.......2007-09-09

This book is mostly about Fidel. There are only two chapters that hone in on Raul. Even Latell, who surely knows more than he could reveal in his own book, didn't reveal too much. He avoided the Bay of Pigs. He didn't say much about Cuba's interference in other Central and South American countries.

Still, it's a good read for laymen wanting to know the basics about Castro and Cuba. Who will take over the island once Fidel dies? Even Latell could only speculate, mentioning a few top ministers from the brothers' group (Raulistas).

Although I didn't gain much insight about Raul, I did learn interesting tidbits about Fidel: the entire clan were illigitimate. Fidel himself has his girlfriend (and their children) set aside. That both Fidel and Raul have a deep hidden side should be no surprise. After Fidel gave the reigns over to Raul in August 2006 there were rumors that Raul would be a ruthless dictator worse than his brother. That hasn't occurred.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of insight.......2007-09-08

Excellent book. Well written and full of insight. Few have the depth and breadth of knowledge that Latell demonstrates in this book.

1 out of 5 stars After Fidel badly written.......2007-03-14

After having read a number of books on Fidel, I found Latell's book badly written, and worse than that, full of conjecture. The other reviewers who claim that Latell is not biased are way off base. Latell's distaste for Fidel is evident on every page. He also borrows quotes from other books. If you want to read a good book about Fidel, one which Latell obviously borrowed from heavily but then added his own interpretations, read "Castro's Cuba, Cuba's Fidel".

5 out of 5 stars AFTER FIDEL provides all the historical and psychological analysis needed for an informed consideration of modern Cuba's future........2006-12-11

AFTER FIDEL: THE INSIDE STORY OF CASTRO'S REGIME AND CUBA'S NEXT LEADER is an important assessment given Fidel's recent health issues: it provides both a political history of Fidel's regime, an analysis of his approach and impact, and new information on his brother, their family life, and how Raul is growing more powerful. In analyzing Fidel and Raul Castro's relationship and evolving influence on Cuban history and culture, AFTER FIDEL provides all the historical and psychological analysis needed for an informed consideration of modern Cuba's future.

5 out of 5 stars More Bio of Castro than Discussion of the Aftermath.......2006-09-04

This is a well written bio. No histronics, no preaching, no selling of a viewpoint. The author is a former CIA officer and current teacher of the Cuban Revolution at Columbia U. He credits his sources by name, noting each person's relation to the events, which is welcome for the layman. While the title implies that the book is about "After Fidel", this topic comprises less than 1/4 of the text. While to predict the future, you need to know the past, the subtitle works better.

Latell defines how Castro, through extraordinary intellect, a sensitivity to competition and a lack of moral restraint was able to take over a small island country and make it his fiefdom. He was a svengali to his brother, Raul, who's unacknowledged skills were necessary to Fidel's rise and continued dominance. Raul, like the rest of Cuba, is compelled for pyschological and practical reasons to cater to Fidel's paranoia.

Raul ascends to head the military by demonstrating his loyalty through leading ruthless prosecutions including that of a good friend and confidant... a popular and successful general... who's crime was to "dis" Fidel in a private conversation. Unlike Fidel, Raul has a modicum of conscience regarding this particular execution. Raul had been known to have shown some humanity at least once before, in visiting his father while the revolution expropriated the family homestead. Raul is not seen in public and the author says he's an alcoholic. If Fidel were to die today, w/could the 75 year old Raul be the Deng Xiaoping of Cuba?

The situation of Lina (Castro's mother) and her children (Fidel, Raul + 5 others) living in a shack while Angel (father) and his legal wife live in the comfortable "big house" is reminiscent of a pre-Civil War US plantation. Eventually the children are recognized by their father but, I presume, the psychological damage had been done.

Latell gives details of some things of which I was only vaguely aware. One was Casto's early obsession with "liberating" Puerto Rico. Another was the group of "non-aligned" nations, which through design Castro leads. Fidel and the entire organization are later sidelined by his necessary statement of alignment with the Soviet Union when it invaded Afganistan.

There are insights on the workings of international information systems. I didn't know that the lack of coordintion of the FBI and CIA was that FBI cases lead to criminal trials and CIA material, witnesses, etc. must be confidential. A Cuban mole, now in prison, provides information to Fidel, and disinformation to us, for 8 years. An anecdote about a mango tree illustrates, not only Fidel's inability to deal with criticism, but also how international information systems keep tabs on each other.

While there is little text on the eventual succession, I recommend this highly readable bio. I don't know how it measures up to the many other Fidel bios, but the author has an interesting and clear style. He is precise in his language and labels what is known and what is speculative.
