Excellent primer for young artists!.......2002-04-23

Using an easy to read format for both kids and their teacher or parent, 1-2-3 Draw is a wonderful resource for budding young artists ages 6-10. Throughout the book, the author uses practical tips to teach techniques (sketch lightly, store work in order to save it for later), getting organized (a materials list is provided at the beginning of the lesson), and an index for those quick art activities.

I found the lessons to have a consistent format and style, which is crucial for self-directed study or art lessons from a novice instructor such as parent or older child.

A must-have for every household library!

17th century French royal Garden design.......1999-01-13

This is a specialized book for those interested in architecture and/or period garden design from 17th century France. Marly was a favorite creation of The Sun King, Louis XIV. Built in a secluded narrow valley not far from Versailles, it tried to create an informal palace where the King and favored courtiers could live a more informal existance not governed by strict court formality as practiced at Versailles. The main features were a Royal Pavilion for the King and his family and a series of small square buildings for quests from the court. The iconology was based on the Zodiac. The facades of the buildings featured "painted" architucture. But the main features were the gardens.

This book has a very brief description of the Royal Pavilion with two elevations and partial floor plans. The real focus is on reproductions of hundreds of color drawings (created in the 17th century) of the multitude of walks, bosquets, fountains, pools and open air "rooms" created by the "gardener king" Louis XIV. There are even multiple plans of the same sites as they evolved over time.

A well done volumn, but again of very specialized interest. There are very few books on Marly as a chateau, as it did not long survive the French Revoultion. Today the site is used a public park, but the elaborate gardens, statues and palace are long gone.

A Genealogist Dream Come True!.......2005-11-01

This book is a wealth of information for any genealogist trying to date a photo taken in Pennsylvania from the years 1839-1900. The information is concise and to the point and literally within minutes I was able to date 2 photographs based on the photographers name stamp to the year 1890. Ries and Ruby have done an excellent job researching photographers from the 18th and 19th century who worked in the state of Pennsylvania. I have previously purchased "Dating Old Photographs 1840-1929" and "Uncovering Your Ancestry through Family Photographs" and this book blows the previous two out of the water!!

An Essential Children's Musical Activities Resource Book.......2000-01-20

In this book Amelia and John describe loads of different musical activities and games that are easy to use and fun for all involved. The games are aimed at children, but it's possible to adapt them to suit the needs of different groups. There is a clear guide to useful musical resources, but many of the activities do not require lots of musical instruments.

The great thing about the activities described is that as well as encouraging musical creativity, Amelia and John also describe developmental goals associated with the games. These include developing social, communication and motor skills. Don't worry - the book is not a theoretical therapy manual and the activities are presented clearly in an easy-to-follow format that allows you to get straight to the practicalities and purpose of each game. There are also plenty of nice illustrations.

This book could be useful and inspirational to all sorts of people working with children or people with developmental disabilties - nursery teachers, school teachers, occupational therapists, activity group leaders, parents and carers.

As a music therapist working with children with special needs I frequently refer to the book for ideas - so far all the activities I've tried have worked well in practice!

Wonderful reading!.......2001-12-04

When I ordered this book back in 1995, I wanted to know more than
the history of the US Naval Academy. The Academy's alumni is a
Who's Who in American military leadership and command presence.
I only wished I had attended Annapolis. Anyone who loves our service academies should not miss the opportunity to buy this wonderful book.

Why was the UN a bystander during the Rwandan genocide? Do its sins of omission leave it morally responsible for the hundreds of thousands of dead? Michael Barnett, who worked at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations from 1993 to 1994, covered Rwanda for much of the genocide. Based on his first-hand experiences, archival work, and interviews with many key participants, he reconstructs the history of the UN's involvement in Rwanda. In the weeks leading up to the genocide, the author documents, the UN was increasingly aware or had good reason to suspect that Rwanda was a site of crimes against humanity. Yet it failed to act. Barnett argues that its indifference was driven not by incompetence or cynicism but rather by reasoned choices cradled by moral considerations. Employing a novel approach to ethics in practice and in relationship to international organizations, Barnett offers an unsettling possibility: the UN culture recast the ethical commitments of well-intentioned individuals, arresting any duty to aid at the outset of the genocide. Barnett argues that the UN bears some moral responsibility for the genocide. Particularly disturbing is his observation that not only did the UN violate its moral responsibilities, but also that many in New York believed that they were "doing the right thing" as they did so. Barnett addresses the ways in which the Rwandan genocide raises a warning about this age of humanitarianism and concludes by asking whether it is possible to build moral institutions.

Superb Account of the UN Role in Rwanda.......2003-01-09

As stated above, Barnett was a staffer on the U.S. Mission to the U.N. in 1994 and thus had a first hand view of the workings/failure of the Secretariat, the Security Council, the United Nations and the international community as a whole.

Unlike so many other books about Rwanda, Barnett refuses to simply write off the UN or the international community as uncaring or unconcerned about the unfolding genocide in Rwanda. Rather, he shows that those involved were deeply concerned but trapped by their own rules and internal bureaucratic logic, leading eventually to paralysis and inaction.

Coming fast on the heels of Somalia and Bosnia, Rwanda was left to implode because everyone involved operated on a logical/ethical plane seemingly far removed from the actual humanitarian crisis on the ground. With the UN overstretched and concerned about its reputation/survival, the members states of the security council unwilling to send troops or supplies into a raging anarchy, and UN rules dictating when peacekeeping and intervention were justified, Rwanda was left to fend for itself.

Barnett does a great job of presenting the facts and their corresponding arguments and explaining just how impossible a situation the UN was facing. As he says, none of this justifies UN inaction, but it does help us to understand how and why the world stood by as nearly 1 million people were slaughtered.
