5 out of 5 stars Great bed skirt.......2005-09-10

Bed skirt is a great compliment to any of Rachel Ashwell's quilts and sheets.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone!.......2004-12-04

This book is by far one of the best decoupage cut-out books I've owned. There is something here for everyone, from the beginner to the most experienced decoupager. Almost every page is a delight, shapes come in many colors and variety of styles and sizes. One added bonus of this book is that the paper is of the best quality, making it easy to handle, cut images, and glue them successfully.

5 out of 5 stars Good pictures.......2003-08-31

Lots of variety, good images that seem to have been scanned in from original postcards. I found them quite useable, the majority are crisp and clear. They are pretty easy to cut out too in terms of not having too many sharp/difficult corners. Subjects range from people to flowers to animals to buildings/castles. Some are comic in nature (big heads, small bodies) others are victorian looking. Excellent collection, and like I said earlier - lots of variety to play with.

          Book Description

This fun espionage thriller overflows with geopolitical intrigue. Written with obvious relish by Rucka, author of the Atticus Kodiak novels, and rendered in stark b&w, cinematic panels by Fernandez, this work finds the British security team S.I.S. in a post-September 11 world, ready to strike at any potential terrorist threat. When a Lebanese citizen walks into a British embassy in Cairo and says he has information about a potential attack on British citizens, the unit moves into action across the globe, from Sarajevo to Rome, before finally tracing their villain in Osaka, on the verge of unleashing poison gas at a World Cup match. This book's pleasure lies in following the chase's twists and turns. Rucka and Fernandez accomplish this almost as well as any novel or film of the genre.. --Publisher's Weekly

          Book Description

A FEAST OF FRIGHTFUL FLICKS WAITING TO BE REDISCOVERED

As the leading name in the world of horror, Fangoria magazine has been the source of information for fans of fright flicks for more than twenty years—covering feature films, video games, comic books, collectibles, and all aspects of horror entertainment. Working closely with Fangoria’s experts, including Editor in Chief Anthony Timpone, Adam Lukeman has compiled a must-have guide for casual horror fans and hardcore horror junkies with Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Films You’ve Never Seen.

With a brief synopsis for each of the included films, lists of cast and crew, “Terror Trivia,” and little-known facts about these lesser-known but must-see gems, Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Films You’ve Never Seen offers a feast of gruesome information. Featured here are flicks that were dumped by their distributors or were initially flops, like Cherry Falls, Manhunter, and Pumpkinhead, foreign winners such as Cronos, The Vanishing, and Funny Games, and straight-to-video sleepers waiting to be discovered, including Shadowbuilder, Jack Be Nimble, and Nomads. There are even surprise entries directed by industry giants—movies like George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead, Brian De Palma’s Sisters, or Dario Argento’s Opera—that are frequently overshadowed by the filmmakers’ other, better-known works but are worthy of further examination.

Entertaining and informative, Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen offers more than a hundred reasons to look beyond the often ho-hum Hollywood hype fests . . . when you’re really in the mood to feel your flesh crawl.

4 out of 5 stars Good book .......2007-09-29

I'm a huge horror movie fan and I found this book very enjoyable. All entrys are well written, short reviews and are in alphabetic order and have a few pictures. I bought ten dvds after reading some of the reviews for the films. Two of my favorite films are including in this book: The Changeling and The Dentist. Ive seen at least tweleve movies or more in this book and some movies aren't worth watching once. Some movies dont even sound that great, making me wonder why the put it in there. Then again, everyone has there own opinon to what they like. I got critized once for not liking a horror film and someone said I didnt like horror movies at all because I didnt like one film. Idiot. All in all, a good pickup for a horror movie fan who wants to see something they have not yet.

4 out of 5 stars A Handy Friday Night Reference Tool.......2006-12-16

Ever step into a movie rental store wondering what movie ya might want? Reading this book definitely comes in handy for situations like that one. This guide has a phenominal list of horror movies and great information about all of them. The blurbs about each title are all well-written and informative without giving away anything about the endings. Although you may not agree with how good each movie is that's been listed, they're all definitely worth checking out at least once. I've bought/rented many of the titles from this book and enjoyed most of them. Adam Lukeman's list of horror movies is invaluable for those moments where ya just don't know what flick ya feel like checking out.

5 out of 5 stars All Lukeman Is Saying...Is Give These Flicks a Chance!.......2006-07-23

Adam Lukeman's 101 BEST HORROR MOVIES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN: A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD'S MOST UNHERALDED FRIGHT FLICKS is a great resource for fans of the horror genre, and younger fans or those new to the genre--that is, those who don't have the time or resources to go back and check out every obscure horror flick of the past--might especially find it helpful.

Of course, hard-core genre fans are sure to find some entries in the book with which they are very familiar (probably even some cherished favorites). GINGER SNAPS (2001), EXORCIST III (1990), and George Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) are a few notable examples. I am a life-long horror fan, however--one who is now staring the age of 50 damn near straight in the eyes--and I am not the least bit ashamed to report that this book spurred me to check out at least a dozen great flicks that, for various reasons, I might otherwise have forever passed over. For example, I've been a longtime admirer of auteur Frank Henenlotter's quirkily campy classic BASKET CASE (1982) and his 1990 Frankenstein send-up FRANKENHOOKER, but I'd never heard of his even better sci-fi satire BRAIN DAMAGE (1988) until I picked up a copy of Lukeman's tome. And though I'd heard a bit of buzz about maverick independent director Larry Fessenden, I'd never been motivated to actively seek out any of his movies until I read Lukeman's review of Fessenden's 2001 opus WENDIGO. The review intrigued me so much that I secured a copy of WENDIGO on DVD and immediately gave it a serious screening. I loved that flick so much that I went through a lot of trouble to get copies of Fessenden's two earlier flicks NO TELLING (1991) and HABIT (1997)--both of which were well worth to effort to locate--and he has since become my all-time favorite indie director.

No doubt many longtime genre fans will disagree with some of the reviews in this book. In fact, some will argue that a few entries are downright dogs that don't even belong in the book at all. But it's unlikely that Lukeman or the FANGORIA editors expect every serious genre fan to see eye-to-eye with them on every film mentioned. Instead, Lukeman and his cohorts simply hope to expose fans to some good--and, in some cases, really great--horror flicks that have been panned by fans and critics in the past.

And isn't that the point? I don't know about other horror fans, but I read the articles and reviews in FANGORIA and other horror magazines and web sites to help me weed out some of the genuine stinkers at the box office and the home-video store. I mean, I just don't have the time and money to watch everything offered up in the name of horror. But realistically, I know that every once in a while, a good flick falls through the cracks and doesn't get a fair shake. With Lukeman's 101 BEST HORROR MOVIES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN: A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD'S MOST UNHERALDED FRIGHT FLICKS, some of those deserving flicks will get a second chance at life...and death!

3 out of 5 stars Don't Be So Quick To Rent or Buy Some Of These.......2006-06-10

I agree that there were several films listed in "Fangoria's 101" book that I wasn't familiar with, but to be honest I'm not really anxious to run out and buy those based on quite a few reviews here of films that I am familiar with. While I agree with stellar reviews of "Pumpkinhead", "Exorcist III", "The Vanishing", "The Stepfather" and quite a few others, it's the inclusion of films like "Pin", "The Ugly", "Wendingo" that has me not trusting the films I'm unfamiliar with. Anyone who can give a glowing review to a borefest like "Pin" has to be questioned. I've seen most of the flicks listed here, and while some are pretty decent, they aren't going to displace "Halloween" on anyones faves list.
I didn't have an issue with the writing style as another reviewer pointed out, but I wasn't really looking for crisp prose here, just a chance to discover some forgotten fright flicks. The reviews are decent and concise, and I really liked the "Trivia" sections following each review. It's the perfect kind of useless information that fills my head.
I still think the best horror reference guide is "Legacy of Blood: A comprehensive guide to Slasher Movies" by Jim Harper. It had the best mix of known and unknown titles, and well written reviews.

          4 out of 5 stars 101 Best Horror Movies You've Never Seen.......2006-06-01

Solid good informative book on more obscure horror films. I watch a lot of horror and out of the 100 mentioned I only saw about 25-30. The rest were obscure yet interesting films worth checking out. I would name them all here but that would take the fun out of reading the book. The book contains more than just the names, it gives descriptions, what sub-genre they're classified in such as ''slasher'', ''supernatural, etc.. it also gives the actors in the film, a brief description of the plot plus cool pictures from the films.

Here's some of the more common ones in the book you might have seen already, especially if you are a big horror/suspense fan.
          The Changeling
          Maniac
          Last House on the Left
          When A Stranger Calls
          Pumpkinhead
          Stir Of Echoes
          Exorcist 3

Then some more obscure ones ive never heard of until I read the book such as..
Funny Games- I just purchased this one and all i can say is wow, i wouldve never found this one if it werent this book most likely. ''An Austrian Horror Film''
Cherry Falls- a lower budget film with some of todays young stars
          Luther the Geek
          Christmas Evil and tons more

This book covers all kinds of suspense/horror films from all different countries. In this book you will find some foreign gems and underappreciated works. Highly Recommended. Enjoy.

          Book Description

Phil Lynott's Thin Lizzy brought an amalgam of hard rock, glam, drugs and a rock 'n' roll lifestyle together resulting in some of the finest pop songs of their era. Former band members and associates tell the full story, from the early days in Ireland, their peak with the multi-platinum Live and Dangerous album and Lynott's sad drug-related demise.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-08-03

Not for the faint of heart...I must say. This is a tell all tale of a great musician brought down by an insatiable lust for herion. Phillip was an extraordinary talent, always pushing the limits. Always the "Hero". Always striving for the best. But he lost it all to the allure of hard drugs.
The story behind Brian Robertson's departure is finally revealed and leaves one wondering why Phillip never asked him to return. I still see this incident as the beginning of the end, regardless of what anyone else thinks. Brian Robertson could never be replaced and Thin Lizzy became know as the revolving door for guitarists.
Ultimately Phillip's demise was of his own accord and that is a hard pill to swallow. He lost everything he set out to achieve. Everything except his loving loyal family and fans. His achievements were many, I only wish he saw it that way.

          3 out of 5 stars Not Enough!!!.......2005-07-12

As a die hard Thin Lizzy fan, I felt that this material was only scratching the surface. The author would introduce an idea, give a quote, and that would be it. I kept hoping for more detail. There was quite a bit of information here I didn't know, but it seemed to leave more questions than answers. It would be nice if the author would go back and fill in all the gaps for the 2nd edition.

Also, I didn't like the way he put the information. Too many quotes. it reminded me of a "Behind the Music" episode where the narrator, Jim Forbes, would say something and then they would show a clip of the guys giving a quote. Fine for a documentary, but a book should not be written in this way. I kept wishing I had interviewed the band and written a book as I think i could have put it together better than this.

If you're a Lizzy fan, sure it will fill in some info (assuming it is correct) but the definitive biography has not been done!! (Maybe I SHOULD interview the fellas and put this together!) However, read Phyllis Lynott's (Phil's Mom) book "My Boy", which is just fantastic! Now if we had a book like that about the entire band.....

          3 out of 5 stars it's alright.......2004-09-15

Having just become extremely interested in the band a few years ago, I was interested just in being able to get my hands on any book concerning them. It was difficult being that they were never that big in America. The book seems well researched & focuses on Phil Lynott's incessant touring & recording throughout his whole career. Philo has always been the main object of any Lizzy-related material, but I would think that Gorham or Downey might figure in a bit more. Call it morbid curiosity if you will, but I was hoping it would go a bit more into "the dirt" behind Phil's drug use and the reason & introduction behind it. Yet another horrible waste of talent & youth on drugs & alcohol. It seemed purposefully vague on this count & towards Gorham as well. Perhaps it was out of respect for Phil's mum? I guess since I just got through reading the Stephen Davis account of Jim Morrison "Life, Death, Legend" that I hoped it would be as interesting as that was; it isn't. Not quite as interesting to read, but I'm glad I got to because it gave a decent overview of Lizzy's career. Hope this review helps anyone who might be curious about the book.

            Book Description

Kids love animals as much as they love puzzles and silly word games. Barnyard Games & Puzzles follows the success of Horse Games & Puzzles for Kids and The Petting Farm Poster Book. Full of lively drawings, it offers page after page of word games and picture puzzles, as well as jokes, riddles, and word play.

              Book Description

In Only the Lonely (1991), Ally Sheedy appeases prospective mother-in-law Maureen O'Hara by going along to see the 1939 film How Green Was My Valley-starring Maureen O'Hara. Richard LaGravenese, slighted by critic Gene Siskel over his screenplay for The Fisher King (1991) wrote an unsavory character named Siskel into The Ref (1994).

Movies and television shows often feature inside jokes. Sometimes there are characters named after crew members. Directors are often featured in cameo appearances-Alfred Hitchcock's silhouette can be seen in Family Plot (1976), for example. This work catalogs such occurrences. Each entry includes the title of the film or show, year of release, and a full description of the in-joke.

Of all the body's unconscious functions--those that occur whether we think about them or not--breathing is the one we're most aware of, the one we feel we have the most control over. That's why asthma, which makes breathing increasingly difficult by trapping air in the lungs, is one of the most terrifying diseases. And it's increasingly deadly, claiming more than 5,000 lives a year. Irwin Polk believes that the rise in deaths comes, in part, from an overuse of drugs to manage the disease and an underuse of breathing exercises to help release trapped air. All About Asthma lives up to its title: it explains how air gets trapped in lungs, why it happens (allergies, environmental pollutants, exercise, stress), and all the strategies known to alleviate it, including breathing exercises.

                  Book Description

Sylvanus Cadwallader, a war correspondent for the Chicago Times and later for the New York Herald, was attached to General Grant’s headquarters from 1862 to 1865. He enjoyed rare access to personalities (Lincoln, Sheridan, and Lee) and events (Vicksburg, Chattanooga, City Point, and Potomac), and he makes them come alive here. Cadwallader also includes information about his own role in constraining and concealing Grant’s drinking. Through his pages the real Grant emerges. The manuscript of Three Years with Grant was edited and annotated by Lincoln biographer Benjamin P. Thomas and first published nearly a century after the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate portrait of General Grant.......1998-06-12

This is a controversial book because of one reason: the author maintains he witnessed Grant getting drunk during the Vicksburg campaign in 1863. Why this is particularly contentious with Grant supporters is a trifle mystifying, but Grant fans still vociferously contend the author "embellished" or "lied" about the drinking binge. Never mind that two other people who were also with Grant corroborate the drinking story. Never mind that his chief of staff specifically wrote about the binging in a private letter.

Aside from this drinking anecdote, the book is a warm, rich portrayal of General Grant from a man with a discerning eye. Cadwallader relates many small incidents of Grant's everyday life as a man and as a general that are fascinating and not to be found in other first-person narratives.

Cadwallader truly loved Grant and his book shows his regard and his profound attachment to him. It's a pity that so many people denigrate such a fine book simply because they feel the author's memory was fallible or because they refuse to see Grant as a multi-facted man. A man with his share of human frailties and weaknesses, but still a towering individual: a great general and a man of uncommon moral fiber and decency. If you know little about Grant, this is a good place to begin a journey in seeking to know him as a man and as a great soldier who saved the union.

5 out of 5 stars Let's review the BOOK and not the President.......2007-10-01

It's kind of amusing that people have reviewed the book and probably never read it. They just see that Bush wrote it and gave it one star. People must have really sad lives when they get pleasure of giving a bad review for the book because they don't like Bush.
He does have a very strong faith and the book is a good read. I would tell anyone to read it unless they are a closeminded liberal who can't see past politics and read a book.

4 out of 5 stars Makes Jesus Look Like Gheghis Khan.......2006-06-23

Wonderful book written by a half blind emancipator of people, Bush tells the history of his clan, which is said to be a roving tribe of yokels from Nuthrembra that somehow found its way to a small town in the middle of nowhere.

In this book he reveals that he had fantasies about a flying contraption out in his home town of Marfa Texas, that he fostered an "angry" attitude at his imaginary pet, and that he was once said to be the son of a witch doctor named Klaus. In a remarkable passage he also speaks about how he was touched by god after stumbling upon a discarded piece of trash in a dumpster near a train track after a drunken binge. I almost wept at his confession.

He then goes on to state how he became interested in politics, after being sent to prison for a check fraud charge, and intervening between two angry convicts fighting over toothpicks. Preaching the word of the lord was his business in jail, where he gained a few converts, namely crooked, rough nose scalawags and oil execs. After numerous failed jobs, brushes with the law and ordinary day jobs (including selling broken eggs), his father ushered him into the state race at Texas where he won by the hand of Jesus. Never had Texas seen so much amiable additions to the wall at the State capital until he took office, it is said to this day a portrait of "Tabrutha", his aunt, is still on the wall.

He quotes passages from the bible that I didn't even know existed and his speeches are humbling. A wonderful read, created by think tanks and bible bumping bumpkins, influenced by the hand of god himself, I suggest you pick this up along with some beer at the local Wal-Mart and have your head examined after reading it because it is so spiritually enlightening.

1 out of 5 stars Bush probably reads the 5 star reviews and laughs at your gullibility.......2006-05-29

Would'nt it be a better world if this nut actually followed the teaching of Jesus? Just think about the people in New Orleans. When they were starving and their city was under water little Bush was on vacation. On the other hand Jesus fed, and cured the poor.
I understand why people think he is tough on terror if you watch the nightly news. The truth is far from the news you see everynight.
The majority of the 9-11 families along with member's of the CIA, scholars, respected politicians in other countries as well as millions of americans know that 9-11 was carried out by our own govt. ( see my reviews for the books,The New Pearl Harbor, and 9-11 Inside Job)
Now I dont want to give little Bush the credit for this because we all know he probably cant even tie his own shoes.
Informed people know that the president really has barely no power at all. The country is really run behind the scenes. He is just a PR man speaking for a currupt Oligarchy that has fooled us into believing we live in a democracy. I know you are laughing, but think about this for a second.
Over 90% of americans are against sending our jobs and industry overseas.
Over 90% would like our borders to be secure.
And nearly everyone wants the oil barons to stop price gouging are fuel.
If we lived in a democracy we would have our way.
Their is real proof that the bush family supported the Nazi's before, during, and after ww2. (namely Prescott Bush, and George Herbert Walker)
Bush is not really a pro lifer. At home he talks the talk. However the Bush family(as well as other presidents have supported population control in other countries) He only uses religion to fool people into voting for him.
He also is a member of Bohemian Grove, and Skull and Bones. Both of these institutions have large ties to the occult.( so much for him being a christian)
And on a funny note He leaked National Security Information to a gay prostitute( Jeff Gannon)
Now we know what he means by Mandate. LOL
I hope I didnt offend anybody, We all really need to wake up. It doesnt matter if we are Right or left, Christian or Atheist. They are not looking out for any of us.
If not next time there is a major terror atack we will go running to little bush so that he can protect us by taking away our freedom of speech, by more domestic spying, by a martial law police state. Than he will be the dictator that he said he wishes he could be. We will be cannon fodder so that he can invade more countries. You will wish you paid better attention. It will be too late for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars not "rarely" but FREQUENTLY goes to church.......2006-05-22

No matter what you think about this President, or that his opinion may differ from yours...one cannot say (as a review recently did) that this man "rarely goes to church." In respect for the President... and people protecting him... I will say that when the prez is in D.C. (more weeks out of the year than he is not) he goes to church...how do I know this? I have been there, worshipping with him.
I cannot tell you what is in his heart when he is praying or taking communion...just as he cannot tell you what is in mine...or any of us guess what is in yours.
I may not have voted for the guy...but we do our country a better service to disagree with respect than to paint each other as inhuman.
I used to hate it, when visiting Evengelical churches to hear Clinton referred to as the "devil," and on that same vein refuse to brand anyone else like that.
With that, we all have the right, especially as Americans, to have our opinions and expres those, but I feel we all do our country a better service by respecting all of God's children...all of us.

1 out of 5 stars As a Christian, I found this book offensive.......2006-03-05

and I think it might be banned from the public libraries where children might get a hold of it.

How a man who rarely goes to Church, started a preemptive war, and cuts funding for programs for the weakest and poorest among us has ever gotten the reputation for being a "good Christian" is one of the greatest mysteries of the milennium. Maybe it is because he said God "talks to him" and told him to start the Iraq war? Regardless, this book is either an awesome satire on the false piety of our president, or is the most obvious piece of propaganda nonsense around. Book Description

Mrs. Chicken can't see her wings in the puddle, so she walks down to the river where she can admire all of herself. She doesn't know that Crocodile is there, waiting for dinner-and a tasty chicken would do nicely! To save herself, Mrs. Chicken tells Crocodile that they are sisters. But how can a speckled chicken and a green-skinned crocodile be related? Mrs. Chicken had better prove that they are, and fast, because Crocodile is getting hungrier . . . The authors and illustrator of Head, Body, Legs join together to create another lively retelling of a popular African folktale.

The storyteller's voice is delightful and compelling and makes this tale perfect for oral telling or read-alouds. The illustrations are a perfect complement to the text and the full effect is even better than the sum of its stellar parts.

We just got this book last week. When my kids take turns choosing books to read, this one comes first, regardless of whose turn it is. On the first reading my easily scared 4-year-old sank deeper and deeper into the couch as Mrs. Chicken got closer and closer to being eaten by Crocodile. When she actually SNAPPED on her leg, he couldn't watch. But as Mrs. Chicken's clever plan unfolded he started smiling and by the end he was laughing at what he called the coolest trick ever. He loves it.

                        5 out of 5 stars A tasty animal tale.......2004-03-20

"Mrs. Chicken and the Hungry Crocodile" combines a text by Won-Ldy Paye and Margaret H. Lippert with illustrations by Julie Paschkis. The book jacket notes that this is a retelling of a Liberian story, and that coauthor Paye is from Liberia and was trained as a storyteller by his grandmother.

The story tells how Mrs. Chicken, while trying to see her reflection in the river, encounters the toothy croc of the title. Mrs. C tries to outwit the croc in order to avoid becoming a chicken dinner. This is a great story: it's funny, features a high stakes conflict between two strong female characters, and has suspenseful plot twists. There is a delicious irony throughout. Paschkis' colorful drawings perfectly complement the story. The artwork has a whimsical quality and clever visual touches; the main characters are particularly well realized.

5 out of 5 stars A book adults will enjoy reading to children.......2004-01-18

This is a wonderful wacky folktale. The children will enjoy listening to this story and the adults will love reading it to them. In this story, a chicken finds a most unusual way of outwitting a rather gulliable crocodile. I have read this book to many kindergarten classes and I have given it, as a gift, to many young children. The response is always a happy one. The kindergarten kids will ask me to please read it again.

I own a safari camp in Liberia next to Sapo National Park, near where the author did a lot of his research. We use this book in our camp for our safari clients to help in identifying birds and for our native guides to learn the English names of birds. This is an excellent book and has become extremely important to our camp. For anyone going to Liberia or any nearby country to Liberia, who is interested in birds, this book is a must to have in your backpack in the field.
