Great book, lots of info and great pics. i just wish the print was alittle bigger

2 out of 5 stars Excellent text, horrible format.......2005-06-05

This is an excellent textile history survey and a welcome addition to any costume/textile library. However, the changes the publishers have made in producing this edition are deplorable (check the dimensions in the product specs). The book is much smaller than the original edition and difficult to handle when one is reading and taking notes. The font is miniscule, probably about 6 point, and makes reading difficult and unenjoyable. The illustrations - which in the older edition are wonderful - are scaled down to such a small size that their impact and usefulness is diminished considerably. Publishers should keep in mind when they are making changes in format to cut costs that the reader's experience does not suffer.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fish Carver's Look at Bob Berry's Book.......2002-07-18

This is the second edition of a very good primer on fish carving by one of the world's best fish carvers. All of the necessary techniques to produce a convincingly life-like fish carving are illustrated. The paint schedules are easy to follow and the addition of the colour section on step by step trout painting is excellent. The book contains a number of projects that build on each other. It is profusely illustrated and the instructions are easy to follow.
Patterns (side view only) are provided for all of the projects in the book, plus several additional species. If the book has a major fault, it is that top view patterns are not included: a beginning carver will have difficulty in getting the top view proportions correct. Otherwise, this book is a good investment and I do, in fact, recommend it to my carving students.

3 out of 5 stars An Introduction that is not for beginners........1999-03-22

I found Bob Berry's book informative, however, it assumes that the reader has had some experience or previous knowledge of carving and painting techniques.

    5 out of 5 stars NL-S Approved Book.......1999-03-05

Fish Carving: an introduction by Bob Berry is the best fish-carving book I have ever read.

This book is a how to book on carving fish out of wood. The book is neatly organized, so even a beginner wood carver could understand it. The book covers all the areas of carving fish out of wood. Easy to follow step by step pictures and explanations also make this a very user-friendly book, because of this it makes your carving experience that much more enjoyable. Berry walks you through the process of selecting wood, general carving and even painting and finishing the carving. There are lots of patterns and color pictures of his award winning woodcarvings to inspire you and help you along your way to becoming a fish carver.

I have found that this book is one of the best of its kind if you wish to learn to carve wooden fish. He is also very thorough when it comes to explaining difficult steps in your fish carving. This book has helped me greatly in expanding my carving knowledge and expertise. This book will not disappoint you. I would recommend this book to junior high students and older.

5 out of 5 stars This book is instructive and easy to use........1998-02-01

Bob Berry has produced what is arguably the best fish carving book on the market. There are several good instructive books; but this one has very easy to read instructions. The book itself is not lengthy but packs a tremendous amount of information in it. The instructions are well witten and the pictures excellent. I still find this book, after reviewing most of the others available on this subject, the one I refer to the most.

5 out of 5 stars what you need to know.......2007-04-10

this book really sets you up with the information you need to know about funding. it's nice that there is an example of a grant in the book to help you understand exactly what you need.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for ALL film producers........2006-02-08

If I ever meet Morrie Warshawski, I will probably embarrass us both by giving him a huge hug. In 97 easy-to-read pages (plus another 60+ helpful pages with sample grant proposals, budget forms and a bibliography), he succinctly lays out a viable process for successfully seeking grants for film and television projects.

What struck me about "Shaking the Money Tree" was how it is actually a basic primer for all fundraising projects, not just film. Warshawski starts with the basics: developing mission and vision statements (Chapter 1 - "Laying the Foundation: Your Career"). While these steps should be obvious to any nonprofit organization, this is new territory for many independent filmmakers. Warshawski asserts "funding problems are almost always routed in a basic set of unresolved career issues." Not only does he contend that mission and vision statements are necessary, but that filmmakers must identify a set of values by which they choose projects and people with which to work. All of this, claims Warshawski, adds focus to filmmakers' efforts, and keeps them from wasting time on projects for which they have no vision or passion. Valuable lessons for any nonprofit organization.

For the rest of Chapter 1, Warshawski takes the reader through a series of career development steps: articulating major short and long-term goals; identifying people and organizations with which to interact in order to succeed; evaluating progress against the career goals; acquiring promotional tools to spotlight the filmmaker and his/her projects; and networking to avoid isolation.

In Chapter 2 ("Where's the Money?"), Warshawski provides an overview of the various categories of funding potentially available to a filmmaker (individuals, foundations, corporations, government agencies, other nonprofits). He correctly points out that there is an abundance of funding sources (not to be confused with an abundance of funds), but the challenge is determining which sources are appropriate for the particular project. He recommends creating a fundraising plan, identifying the most suitable prospects and determining the most effective way to formulate and make the request. (Again, a sound methodology for any nonprofit.) Warshawski identifies the upside and downside to each category, reviews how to find them and, generally, how to approach them (more information on research and proposals is provided in subsequent chapters).

Chapter 3 ("Patchwork Quilt - Putting Your Project Together") was one of my favorites. Warshawski points out that a major impediment to successfully finding funds is beginning fundraising before the project is fully developed and thus not being able to completely answer all of a potential funder's questions. He highlights the difference between "this is a story that must be told" and "this is a story that must be heard." As is the case with all fundraising, one must start with the need. Warshawski runs through the elements of a solid plan, and explains the questions that must be answered. He also points out that fundraising will take longer than a filmmaker might expect: one to two years to complete the funding is not unusual.

The remaining chapters - 4 ("Getting Personal - Individual Donors"), 5 ("The Paper Trail - Foundations and Government Agencies") and 6 ("All the Rest") explain the types of funders, their motivations and how to research them. He offers some excellent tips that the novice fundraiser/filmmaker might miss, such as Chapter 5's recommendation that, when researching foundations, don't just research "film/video/media/TV," but look for funders of the issue area(s) that the film is tackling. Most foundations are not really funding the film, but are funding the visibility to the subject matter that the film is providing. The last two pages of Chapter 6 provide "Morrie's Maxims" - sound advice for fundraising for any type of project.

I did have some quibbles with the book. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is not a government agency. The address for the Foundation Center in Washington is out of date (the book was published in 2003, and the Center moved to 1627 K Street, NW in 2001). Foundation giving levels are directly affected by economic trends: foundation endowments slump when the stock market declines and the effect is often felt for several years after the stock market starts to recover (Warshawski makes it sound as though foundations are relatively immune to economic shifts, other than facing increased requests for support). And finally, it would have been helpful to mention that the National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Arts will provide, upon request, samples of successfully funded film proposals under the Freedom of Information Act. But these are minor blips in an otherwise superb book.

There are two positive outcomes for a filmmaker who reads Warshawski's book and puts his words into practice: a funded project, and a successful second career as a fundraiser. "Shaking the Money Tree" should be required reading at all film schools. But even beyond that, it offers extremely helpful information for anyone who needs to raise money for a project.

5 out of 5 stars How the financial side of the film business really works.......2004-04-03

Now in an expanded and updated second edition, Shaking The Money Tree: How To Get Grants And Donations For Film And Television by Morrie Warshawski is a ground breaking instructional manual in the art of fundraising for the financing of noncommercial film and video projects. Presenting the basics of how to apply for and earn grants and/or donations from individuals, foundations, government agencies, corporations, and more, Shaking The Money Tree combines direct decorum with an invaluable insight for how the financial side of the film business really works, as well as being peppered with useful grant forms and superb grant writing examples. If you have a film or television project that you need to finance -- begin with a close and careful reading of Morrie Warshawski's Shaking The Money Tree!

          5 out of 5 stars Must Read!.......2003-07-08

This is a great book...after searching high and low and all over the internet, I found a concise, informative and helpful resource to walk me through the complex world of fundraising for media. I'm applying Morrie's suggestions to my movie's business plan. Everyone interested in film/video should read this book.

              Book Description

Fictional depictions of Native American concepts of justice, crime, and the investigation of crime are explored in this original work. Shaman or Sherlock explores depictions created by Native American authors themselves, as well as those created by outsiders with mainstream agendas. The most successful of these writers fuse authentic Native American culture with standard genre conventions, thus providing an appealing, empathetic view of little-understood or underappreciated groups, as well as insight into issues of cross-cultural communication. Dealing with such significant concepts as acculturation, regional diversity, and assimilation, this unique study evaluates over 200 detective stories. Though the crime novel began in Europe as a manifestation of Enlightenment rationality and scientific methodology, the Native American detective story moves into the realm of the spiritual and intuitive, often incorporating depictions of non-material phenomena. Shaman or Sherlock? explores how geographical and tribal differences, degrees of assimilation, and the evolution of age-old cultural patterns shape the Native American detective story.

                          Book Description

Drawing together hundreds of images, Hitler's Sky Warriors presents a unique examination of the German airborned soldier in World War II. Comprehensive and authoritative, it includes chapters on the corps's recruitment and training, its specialized equipment, its operation in the Low Countries in 1940, its seizure of Crete in 1941, and its combat on the Eastern Front and in Italy. This is a book that fills an important niche in the World War II library.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative & interesting, but unexceptional.......2002-04-20

HITLER'S SKY WARRIORS is a very informative and well documented review of the Fallschirmjager (parachute hunters, literally) during the second world war. There are more than 250 excellent black and white photos with detailed descriptions about any peculiarities associated with them, such as uniform or weapons variations. This is one of the highlights of the book.

The exploits of these paratroopers are examined from their inception and training through all the major campaigns until their eventual demise in May 1945.

Where the book lets down, from my view, is not what it says, but what it excludes. It is a rather detached, textbook style approach to the subject matter. Many readers contemplating this book would be aware of much of the basic subject matter Mr. Ailsby (the author) rehashes. He goes to great lengths to describe which particular officer was commanding a particular element during a particular battle even at the platoon level.

I'm not inferring that this is not interesting particularly to historians, but there are very little first person accounts or individual exploits covered. The Fallshirm were an elite and very effective fighting unit, yet this book does little to leave you with that impression.

We are told little of how effective they were in combat or how respected they were by their enemies. For example, we are told they were stubborn in the hedgerows of France but are given no clue as to how they were effective, how they were deployed, how they used their weapons, or the casualties they inflicted. More time is spent instead describing their defeats and casualties.

Ailsby is quite right in stating that German units in general were defeated primarily due to overwhelming allied superiority in air power and material resources, rather than allied military superiority.

Inspite of the books weaknesses, I still recommend it because it is still informative and has many interesting and heretofore unpublished photos. And I did learn that Max Schmelling (you remember him) was a Fallschirmjager volunteer and served during the Crete campaign.

I thought I understood what WWII was about and what the soldiers on both side must have gone through. But I was wrong. This book showed me a group of elite soldiers I knew nothing about, and I was amazed by their dedication and performance. Somehow we always want to think of the "enemy" as a group of uneducated rabble, but after reading this book, I'm amazed that the Allies did as well against this elite force as they did. Thank you Mr. Ailsby for continuing my education!

Taken in dall smoses, this self-proclaimed "billy sook" is a fun-filled new (posthumously published) offering from children's poet Shel Silverstein, creator of Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and other favorites. Completed prior to the poet's death in 1999, Runny Babbit was a work in progress for more than 20 years, and is populated by the likes of Runny Babbit, Toe Jurtle, Ploppy Sig, Polly Dorkupine, and Pilly Belican (who owns the Sharber Bop), all denizens of the green woods where letter-flipping runs rampant. In this madcap world, pea soup is sea poup, Capture the Flag is Fapture the Clag, and snow boots are bow snoots. Each poem incorporates the same kind of switcheroo wordplay found in "Runny's Hew Nobby:" Runny Babbit knearned to lit,/ And made a swat and heater,/ And now he sadly will admit/ He bight have done it metter." (Here, in one of many winningly simple line drawings, R. B. sits knitting one very long sleeve, which is labeled as such.) Children who have some fluency in reading will enjoy this bonsensical nook the most. (Ages 7 to 12) --Karin Snelson

This book is the last that Shel Silverstien wrote, it took him twenty years. When you see how this book is written, you will understand why it took him so long. After he died his family compiled the entire thing as a project of love.
I highly recommend this read, my children love it and it is eduactional. Since it is all backwords, it forces children to think about every word and how it should be instead of how it is. It is fun to read as is and switch around and read as it should be. I had to add this to my children's collection, since it is a one of a kind and Shel's final book.

So READ IT! Recommended for kids who love jokes.

My son is Autistic, so we weren't sure if he'd "get" it or not. Boy did he get it!!! He loves this book, and we play the "index" game with him. We find something in the index, he finds it and figures out what page it's on, opens the book to that page and we read it. After we read it, he 'decodes' it, and we talk about it. It's been a great tool for us to help him with his language, comprehension and conversation skills. Besides that, it's funny, and fun to read!
