A real treat. They break up some of the "stories" instead of putting them one day after another, but overall it's a great calendar.

        Book Description

Film buffs explore the world of noir cinema in a Los Angeles context with this guide to noir films and their California settings. This book illustrates how these films use L.A.'s diverse cityscape and architecture to convey a unique vision of urban corruption and existential fatalism, in both the gritty downtown area and the outlying affluent communities like Malibu and Beverly Hills. Dozens of noir and neo-noir films are featured including classics such as Double Indemnity, Kiss Me Deadly, Sunset Boulevard, and Touch of Evil and more recent films such as Mulholland Drive and Pulp Fiction. More than 150 photographs—many never before published—further illustrate the rich and constantly changing backdrop of these movies.

4 out of 5 stars Film Noir in Los Angeles, and Vice Versa, 1942-2004. .......2007-03-08

In "L.A. Noir: The City as Character", film noir historians Alain Silver and James Ursini take a different approach to the films that they have written so much about in other books. This book looks at film noir, both classic and neo-noir, for which "Los Angeles and its environs serve as essential elements in the invocation of the noir mood." Silver and Ursini discuss over 40 films, noting their themes and characters, with an emphasis on the role location plays in the movies. The book is organized into four chapters: "Hollywood", "The West Side and the Coast", "Downtown Los Angeles", and "The 'Burbs". A brief history of the area introduces each chapter, and some films are included in more than one section.

Locations don't mean much if we can't see them, so "L.A. Noir" is packed with pictures. There are about 150 black-and-white photos, including production stills, behind-the-scenes photos, and 64 location photos. The location photos are also indexed in the back of the book with thumbnails and precise locations, so you could find the places yourself. Reproduction quality is good. To accommodate the photos, the book is much wider than it is tall. That would be fine in a hardback, but it's a minor annoyance in softcover, as the book flops awkwardly when open. I can't say that "L.A. Noir" is essential for film noir enthusiasts, but it goes over old territory with a different emphasis. Film noir aficionados living in the Los Angeles area may find it particularly interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Explore the dark side of the City of Angels!.......2005-12-31

Due to the ever-increasing popularity of film noir, the amount of books on the subject seems overwhelming at times. Thus, it's up to writers/historians like Alain Silver and James Ursini to shed new light on the neglected categories of film noir. This book focuses on L.A.'s important role in film noir, and especially why it makes such a great setting in these dark crime stories. It takes you to the actual locations that were used for such classic noirs as "Criss Cross", "D.O.A.", "Double Indemnity", "Gun Crazy", "In A Lonely Place", "Kiss Me Deadly", "Mildred Pierce", "Night Has a Thousand Eyes", "Pitfall", "Quicksand", "Shockproof", "Sunset Boulevard", "T-Men", "This Gun For Hire", "Touch of Evil", and "White Heat". The book also shows locations used for modern noirs like "Devil in a Blue Dress", "Heat", "Impulse", "L.A. Confidential", "Mulholland Drive", and "2 Days in the Valley".

The best feature of this book is the pictures of course, as much of the text is merely recycled material from earlier work by Alain Silver and James Ursini. This book is generously illustrated with lots of photos from noir films, as well as photos of the actual L.A. locations used in the films as they look today. My favorite picture is the photo on the title page, a beautiful nighttime shot of the San Fernando Valley in the 1980s. I wish there'd been more focus on the older noir films. In fact, the section on "Blade Runner" shouldn't have even been included, especially when actual noir films like "The Crooked Way" (set in L.A.) were completely ignored. How do you confuse science-fiction with film noir?!? Anyway, although it's far from being a definitive work on the subject, film noir addicts will probably enjoy it just for the great photos, if nothing else.

3 out of 5 stars Locations, locations, locations.......2005-11-04

The book doesn't quite live up to its subtitle: "The City as Character," though the authors do a whole lot of talking about L.A. You have to admire the effort that went into tracking down all these film locations, though many of them ("Present-day tunnel through Bunker Hill where Steve Thomson is dropped of in Criss Cross") are of the "so what" variety. Lots of film stills, but on the whole the book didn't seem worth the price. If you absolutely must have every book connected with noir films, then you might feel differently.

I bought this book when it was first published, and I still go back to it from time to time. Just the Rogers drumset on the cover was enough to grab my interest. This is an interesting read complete with pictures of some '60s heroes playing the kits everyone is bidding on ebay for!

        Nice one, Bob!

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Respectful Book.......1999-09-24

I appreciate this book because drummers often don't receive the praise they deserve, and the 60's produced some of the world's best drummers. I'm glad the author wants to print an updated version. I was delighted to see my favorite drummer of all time, the late B.J. Wilson of Procol Harum, included under the Honorable Mentions. I do want to point out an error in the book that's unfortunately all too common: Bobby Harrison did NOT play on the hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale" -- that was the great session drummer Bill Eyden, who certainly deserves to be in this book. Come visit the WebPages devoted to B.J. Wilson and Bill Eyden via the FEATURES menu at the Procol Harum Website -- email me for the URL if you can't find it.. And enjoy this Book!

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book for wannabe attacking players.......2007-06-12

Before reading this book, I played chess like a scared chipmunk, obsessing about little details like whether pushing this pawn would weaken my position by a picounit. This book helped me see that the way to win games at the amateur level is to attack, to be aggressive, to go after the enemy king like he is your nemesis, to crank open his position like a sardine can and commit regicide.

The book's title is somewhat misleading in that the book is very narrow in scope (a full book on how to beat dad would have to include discussion of openings, endgames, and more general chess strategy and tactics). Rather, it contains fifty practical checkmating patterns that frequently come up in real games. If the basic mating patterns (e.g., how to mate with a King and Queen versus a lone King) are the alphabet of checkmate, this book is the grammer of checkmate. The patterns consist of beautiful 3-5 move combinations that you will have opportunities to apply in many of your games.

If you are looking for a beginner chess book, get the Idiot's Guide to Chess. That is the best place to start from square one. Then learn some very basic tactics (e.g., Pandolfini's Beginning Chess). Then get and read this book. Over and over. With these patterns ingrained in your mind, you will spot them in the far distance during games, aim for them, and go in for the kill. Sure, sometimes you will crash and burn, but that will only make you more prepared for the next game.

Thanks to Chandler for writing this book. It has made chess fun for me again.

            4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-04-27

This book isnt really about how to beat your dad at chess, because your dad could be bobby fischer or not even know how to play chess (just wanted to clear that up for u guys)

This book has 50 mates and its about pattern recognition, that means pretty much just pounding it into your head so u can remember to use it when you have the chance. its a really good book, i would get it.

4 out of 5 stars Chess Nuts Boasting.......2007-04-18

Great book. I love the premise- and the careful way the Mr. Chandler explains it- which is that pattern recognition is a more powerful tool than in-depth computation analysis. It serves as a nice illustration of Gladwell's "Blink" theory, that less information can be more when the brain is finely tuned in to the right information. Chandler points out that a human chess pro is better than a computer because our brains can quickly filter out the irrelevant info and just recognize the broad pattern, such as a set-up for a standard mate possibility. The computer is inferior, per the author, because while it might come to the same conclusion, it has to do it by generating every single possible move with every single piece on the board, following out hundreds of thousands of possible subsequent sequences to arrive at the checkmate. Of course, I would suggest that the computer is actually superior in this respect because, even though it has to analyze hundreds of thousands of possibilities, it really doesn't mind. It doesn't get bored, fatigued, or seduced by a bold capture. But, still, I appreciate his point.

The author gives examples of fifty standard checkmate motifs, and uses good illustrations to help recognize the pattern when it is there and understand the sequence of events. My only beef with the book, for which I've docked a star, is the sexist title. I can't help but comment on this in this post-Imus era. The author tells us from the start that it is really a book on how to beat anyone in chess so the title is just an eye-catcher. But I don't want to reinforce the many messages that young girls get about what they should or shouldn't be good at. Okay, to be truthful, in all the chess playing families that I can think of off the top of my head, it is in fact the fathers who are the chess nuts, who hand the game down to the next generation. But lets not reinforce the not uncommon notion that men are naturally superior chess players. I've even read the likes of Camille Paglia, in one of her faux-academic pieces, use the fact that chess champions are all men as evidence for a male superiority in spatial and mathematical reasoning. Without going too far into what is a complicated and emotionally loaded argument, I would just direct people to do a little internet search on Judit Polgar if you are not already familiar.

Still, overall, thumbs up. A good book, really for beginning to intermediate chess fans of any age, which will increase your arsenal of offensive tricks and improve your defensive vigilance.

5 out of 5 stars A must for kids with rating up to 600 (approx).......2007-04-08

We purchased this book for my two kids, and saw an immediate improvement. It is written in a very easy to read style, and it goes to through a lot of the tactics needed to improve their game... The only disadvantage was that I had to improve my game too to keep ahead of them!

5 out of 5 stars Well-organized and useful to players of any ability.......2006-12-31

This is a very well-organized and highly readable book on various types of checkmates. Since this is the whole purpose of the game, it is an obvious area of emphasis from both offensive and defensive perspectives. In other words, if you want to be a winner you need to always be looking for checkmate whether you are on the "giving" or "receiving" side! I think the author is correct to be emphasising this early and teaching people to recognize patterns than come up that lead to checkmate. This will both prevent you from being checkmated by surprise and to see checkmate opportunities in real game situations that you might otherwise miss.

The other reviewers are correct in their observations that this book is suitable for players of any age. In fact, I would say it is even a bit misleading to position it as a book for kids. It seems to me that one would need to be at least 12 years old to fully appreciate and benefit from the contents. It might be a difficult read for younger kids, but one they can grow into over time. I wouldn't buy it for someone is 6 years old, but it certainly is a possiblity for a bright 9 year old.

I don't really have anything critical to say about the book. It gets to the point quickly and focuses on principles and patterns that come up again and again in chess. If you are serious about chess, but haven't really studied it, this would be a great place to start. The contents are not overwhelming and the book covers a lot of ground without becoming boring.

Finally, if you are a beginning chess player and you really want to beat your dad, this book will help enormously. The other books by this author are also very good. In addition, I would recommend getting a good chess program. This is one of the best ways to improve your play.

As someone who was there at the beginning of Star Trek and then saw it grow from a small to a mass movement, I am well aware of the role of fan letters in the expansion of interest. Some of that is clear from the letters highlighted in this book. Unfortunately while some of the letters are quite literate, many are not. They are crude and really do not demonstrate the power of the tsunami that turned Star Trek into a mainstream ideal. Some people wrote letters that were a blatant attempt to become famous and others were just trying to pitch a lame story idea. The best letters by far were from people who praise the role Star Trek had in motivating them to achieve more and figuratively reach for the stars. That is truly what Star Trek was all about and it is unfortunate that the selectors lost that focus when they were sifting through the documented mountain of mail generated by viewers of the show.

Letters to Star Trek, written by Gene Roddenberry's assistant Susan Sackett, gives us a great look into those exciting, hope filled days before all the movies and new series'. Read letters from loyal fans and friends of Star Trek, along with the replies from Gene Roddenberry and from the stars of the show. 8-page section of 15 color illustrations 11 b/w illustrations 3 maps 6 x 9 "McGuire writes with such spirit and such a sure mastery of telling detail that it's as though he were there himself. This is first-rate military history." -David McCullough In the years since the Revolutionary War, legend has obscured the story of the Battle of Paoli, better known in history as the Paoli Massacre. For this first-ever full-length treatment of the battle, the author has uncovered never-before-published primary documents to tell of British General Charles Grey's brutal attack on Anthony Wayne's division of 1,500 men in September 1777. The detailed account follows the action from the arrival of Wayne's division south of the Schuylkill River, near Paoli Tavern, to defend Philadelphia against Howe's encroaching troops to Grey's discovery of Wayne's position, the bloody battle that ensued, and the subsequent court-martial of Wayne, who had been accused of negligence. Thomas J. McGuire teaches American history at Malvern Preparatory School, near Paoli, Pennsylvania, and is the author of The Surprise at Germantown. He is Vice President and Historian of the Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund and has lectured extensively on the battle.

5 out of 5 stars A detailed look at a long overlooked event........2005-08-19

Thomas McGuire brings to life the events leading up to and including the "surprise" attack near Paoli Pennsylvania. It is clear that a lot of research went into this book that reveals that what appeared to be just another early revolutionary war lost battle for the continentals was more than what appears on the surface.

3 out of 5 stars The Learning Curve of War.......2005-02-21

The Battle or Paoli (September 21, 1777) or the "Paoli Massacre" is one of three tactical engagements in the 1777 Philadelphia campaign in which General George Washington's army was out-maneuvered and outfought by General William Howe's army. Yet while the other two actions - Brandywine and Germantown - are fairly well known, Paoli has slipped into obscurity. Thomas J. McGuire, a history teacher in Pennsylvania, sheds much light on the Battle of Paoli in this book, which relies heavily upon primary source documentation (including previously unused sources). Yet while McGuire's approach is erudite, he lacks the narrative skill of a writer like David Hackett Fischer and much of the book meanders along until the moment of battle arrives. McGuire also lacks the military skill to analyze the Battle of Paoli and examine its tactical meaning and operational implications. Nevertheless, McGuire's book is useful for its examination of this battle and its effect upon the defeated commander, Brigadier General Anthony Wayne.

McGuire organizes his volume into 26 chapters, most of which cover a period of 24 hours or less. Unfortunately, McGuire seems unconcerned for the necessity of chronological order in historical narrative and his first chapter covers September 26, 1777, then the second chapter jumps backward to August 24, then the third jumps ahead to September 14. While McGuire then steadies on course toward the Battle of Paoli on 21 September, his narrative is further obscured by the lack of decent maps. Washington detached one of his best divisions of continental troops under Anthony Wayne to harass the rear of Howe's army (McGuire spends little effort questioning this order, but splitting one's force in the face of a skilled enemy seems highly questionable), and there was considerable maneuvering in the period 14-21 September 1777 by both armies. Frankly, I had a great deal of trouble following McGuire's "they marched from this tavern to that tavern" kind of narrative, particularly with the one inadequate map he provides (which depicts no tactical movements). Aside from an inadequate tactical narrative, this first third of the book is quite weak for several reasons. First, McGuire spends little effort discussing his central characters - Anthony Wayne and British Major General Charles Grey; instead, they appear almost as ciphers. Second, McGuire seems completely unconcerned with anything going on beyond eastern Pennsylvania and ignores the strategic implications of a protracted campaign around Philadelphia. While Howe was inflicting three defeats upon Washington around Philadelphia, his army was not available to support Burgoyne's army in upstate New York, which at that moment was getting into serious trouble. Howe was so focused on his tactical battles that he lost sight of the "big picture" and Burgoyne's subsequent defeat and surrender at Saratoga owes something to these battles around Philadelphia.

Once McGuire gets to the Battle of Paoli itself, the quality of his narrative improves considerably and it is clear that this was the author's main emphasis. In short, the British discovered Wayne's division lurking in their rear and dispatched a picked brigade under Charles Grey to crush it. Quite unusual for the period, Grey's force conducted a fast night march and night attack upon the American camp and dispersed Wayne's force with considerable losses. The actual tactical action at Paoli was humiliating for the reputation of American arms and Wayne, with some of the best continental regiments offered up as bayonet practice for the British. While the question of whether or not Wayne was caught by surprise - and it appears that he was - is open to debate, the clumsy handling of American troops is not. Wayne's troops were bottled into their camp, which lacked any real defenses, in a trap of their own devising. McGuire does not bother to ask why Wayne thought it prudent to bivouac his entire division in such a small, congested area. American commanders still made many mistakes at this point in the war and unfortunately, Paoli was part of that learning curve.

The last several chapters cover events after the Battle of Paoli, including the American defeat at Germantown, the investigation into the battle and Wayne's court martial (of which few records have survived). McGuire displays the orientation of a local historian in these final chapters, spending great effort discussing the care of the Paoli Battlefield and various local inns after the war. While this may be charming for local readers, it means much less to someone outside Pennsylvania. Larger issues, such as Wayne's reputation, get much less attention. Indeed, one suspects that the reason Paoli became obscure was the possible blot that it represented on Wayne's early career and that, as he went on to later successes, this early defeat and court martial was conveniently ignored. Certainly McGuire should have asked the question, did this defeat at Paoli make Wayne a better commander in the future?

5 out of 5 stars Battle of Paoli by Thomas McGuire.......2002-08-06

The following excerpt is from a review in the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club Quarterly, January, 2003, Vol., XVI, No. 1.

"The Battle of Paoli" provides a long awaited in-depth analysis of the movements of the Continental Army and the British Army in September 1777, both preceding and after the Battle of Paoli, more commonly referred to as the "Paoli Massacre". The TE History Journal carried two well researched articles on the subject by Franklin M. Burns, our local historical authority, in its April and July 1940 editions. The articles provide an interesting departure point for a review of Mr. McGuire's book.
The battlegrounds themselves are in Willistown Township and in the present borough of Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania. However, much of the activity before and after the battle took place in Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships. We will particularly review these events as described in the book and attempt to identify the present locations in Tredyffrin and Easttown where the activities took place.
"POSITION OF THE BRITISH ARMY AT
TREDYFFRIN THE 19TH OF SEPTEMBER 1777"
The British troops which overwhelmed Anthony Wayne's two brigades on September 20-21, 1777 were encamped in Tredyffrin Township along the north slope of the southern ridge which defines the Great Valley. Their positions are shown in a manuscript map made by Captain John André of the British Army and another beautifully reproduced map which shows the same positions as "drawn by an officer on the spot." Franklin Burns prepared his own map, TEHCQ, Vol. II, No. 2, p. 33, (the Burns map) on which he endeavored to combine the data from the published maps with "the traditional sites and the cartographer=s knowledge of the terrain." The maps commonly show the positions of many units of the British Army but not all units are commonly shown. Comparing positions shown on the three maps and relating them to known present day locations is a fascinating exercise.
The topography shown on the Andrè, the "officer on the spot", and the Burn's maps conform quite well to the present topography considering the absence of a scientific survey for the old maps. The encampment maps reproduced in the McGuire book show four small hills along Swedesford Road and three larger hills extending west to east further to the south. These hills are discernable to the present day viewer with a little imagination.
Today the area is covered with office parks, retail centers and housing developments. However, it can be viewed from the bounds of Swedesford Road, Valley Forge Road, Hickory Lane, and Howellville Road. Tea Garden Park, D'Ambrosia Park and the Little League ball fields are on the site of the British encampment and Cold Stream Drive runs through the center of it.

                        GENERAL PAOLI TAVERN

This tavern was a reputed gathering place for local revolutionaries including Anthony Wayne, whose home, Waynesborough, is less than a mile away. It is mentioned in the McGuire book as a place the British Army passed on their way east toward their encampment in Tredyffrin and as a place that Colonel Musgrave's forces passed going west toward his defeat of Anthony Wayne's forces at Malvern.
The site of the Paoli Tavern is on the north side of Lancaster Pike, adjacent the present train station, about where the present post office is.

                        BLUE BALL TAVERN
The old road to Lancaster had regularly spaced taverns at which travelers stopped for the night. The Blue Ball was the next one east from Paoli.
McGuire's book records the march of 10,000 British troops eastward on Swedesford Road through the Great Valley in September 1777. Cornwallis' troops passed the General Paoli Tavern and continued two miles further east to the Blue Ball Tavern.
The 1777 Blue Ball Tavern, today, is a private home at the corner of Conestoga and Irish Roads across the street from Conestoga High School. In the 1790's the Blue Ball Tavern moved to what is now a meticulously maintained little gem of a house on Old Lancaster Road just north of the Daylesford train station.
                        NEWTOWN ROAD, EASTTOWN TOWNSHIP
British Colonel Harcourt made an excursion from the British encampment in Tredyffrin Township to collect horses. He went east on the Lancaster Road toward Philadelphia but came back to the camp through Newtown Square. Easttown residents, Robert Stephens, Casper White and Peter Ubles each reported losing a horse to the British and Michael Bingers reported losing three mares. McGuire quotes British Captain Montresor as saying that Colonel Harcourt took "two Creators (creatures) worth thirty-six pounds" from William Burns. One wonders if the plundered William Burns was a relative of our local historian, Franklin M. Burns or of the Burns family who were instrumental in building Berwyn.
The locations of these residences are unknown to the author but Newtown Road follows approximately the same path that it has always followed.

                        WAYNESBOROUGH
According to McGuire, the ancestral home of Anthony Wayne was searched by a squad of British soldiers hovering near the Paoli Tavern about the time of the Paoli Battle. Waynesborough has been restored recently to a splendid condition. It is located on Waynesborough Road just south of Paoli.

                        THE CHURCHES
The Anglican Churches, St. Peter's in the Great Valley and St. David's, had a loyalist pastor. On the other hand, the Great Valley Baptist Church and the Presbyterian Church in the Great Valley were the centers of the colonialists who were rebelling against British authority. A Hessian officer later wrote that the war was really an Irish-Scotch Presbyterian Rebellion.
All of these churches are in the same location, in approximately the same condition, and house the same denominations as at the time of the Battle of Paoli.
Mr. McGuire's book is a "must-read" for a wide range of people from serious students of the Revolutionary War to local residents who will be intrigued by actions which took place in our own back yards.

5 out of 5 stars 'No Flint' Grey.......2001-06-16

This is the type of military history that makes someone sit up and take notice. Superbly researched and carefully written, it is an excellent account of the British night attack against Anthony Wayne's bivouacked troops at Paoli, Pennsylvania.

Attacking at night with the bayonet, the British task force under General 'No Flint' Grey (called such as he reportedly had the troops take the flints out of their muskets so there wouldn't be any accidental discharges of their weapons), hit the American encampment, overran the pickets and outposts, effectively silencing them, and proceeded to wreak havoc on the relaxed American units.

Using plenty of primary source material the author has given us a rousing account of one of the most enigmatic fights of the Revolution and has demolished myths about this 'massacre.' In doing so, he has done us all a great service.

'Mad Anthony' must have learned from this experience, for his later bayonets only assault on the British fortified position at Stony Point New York, below West Point on the Hudson River, had its dash and was just as effective, albeit on a much smaller scale. He was deadly serious in this action, threatening with death anyone who fired before it was time to do so. Perhaps Thomas McGuire can have that as his next project-that or the bayonet assaults, one American and one French, against redoubts nine and ten at Yorktown at the end of the war. Mimicry is the greatest form of flattery, and the American Continentals learned their lesson well.

                        This book is highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars A lot of myth has grown up around the Revolutionary War.......2001-04-08

And nowhere, probably, as much as in the Philadelphia area, where I have spent my life. McGuire has used the papers from the court of inquiry into the Battle of Paoli to debunk some of the myths surrounding this particular episode. He shows, for example, that it was not the "Paoli Massacre," as it has come to be known in our area, and that neither madness, drunkeness, nor a mercurial temper, on the part of Anthony Wayne, were responsible for this tragic defeat.

I will admit that part of the excitement, for me, in reading this book is that I live a mere five miles from the site, and often travel the same roads as the Continental and British armies (albeit, in heavy traffic). Indeed, I thought one of the most poingnant parts of this work was contained in the epilogue. On the placement of the monument, forty years after the battle, Maj. Isaac Barnard noted "...in a few short years the place of their internment would have been in doubt and uncertainty...fruitless would have been the zeal of the patriots..." The same words could have been repeated just two years ago, when the site of the Battle of Paoli was just barely saved from developers. Thank heavens for people like Thomas McGuire who remind us of the treasure trove of historical sites we are in danger of losing.
