Book Description
An Anecdoted Topography of Chance is arguably the most important and entertaining "Artist's Book" of the post-war period. This edition is the definitive appearance to date of a unique collaborative work by four artists associated with the FLUXUS and Noveau Réalisme movements, and is substantially larger than the three previous versions published in France, the USA and Germany.
What is the Topography? Hard to explain an idea so simple yet so brilliantly executed. Following a rambling conversation with his dear friend Robert Filliou, Daniel Spoerri one day mapped the objects lying at random on the table of his room, adding a rigorously scientific decription of each. These objects subsequently evoked associations, memories, anecdotes; not only from the original author, but from his friends as well: a beguiling creation was born. Many of the principal participants of FLUXUS make an appearance (and texts by Higgins, Jouffroy, Kaprow, Restany, and Tinguely are included, among others). It is a novel of digressions in the manner of Tristram Shandy or Robbe-Grillet; it's a game, a poem, an encyclopaedia, a cabinet of wonders: a celebration of friendship and creativity.
The Topography personifies (and pre-dates) the whole FLUXUS spirit and constitutes one of the strangest and most compelling insights into the artist's life. From out of the banal detritus of the everyday a virtual autobiography emerges: of four perceptive, witty and eloquent members of the human species.
The map of the table-top has been reproduced as a fold-out at the back of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Why has no one reviewed this?.......2005-12-09
This is a supremely lovely book, an accumulation of comments made over time, space, and multiple languages. Here is roughly what happens. Daniel Spoerri had a very messy table. He wrote down the name of everything that was on his table and described it anecdotally. His friend Robert Filliou added some comments which he added as footnotes. Emmett Williams translated the book into English and added his own anecdotes; Dieter Roth translated it into German and added more. Roland Topor added illustrations at some point, and I think there are a couple of footnotes by Alastair Brotchie, the editor of this edition, the Atlas Press edition of 1996 (not sure why it lists Serpent's Tail as the publisher here). I believe there are more recent German and Italian versions which, presumably, add more comments. This sounds like a mess, and it is a mess, but it provides an unmatchable portrait of the lives of a number of important figures in the European avant-garde from the early 1960s.

Definitely the first book you should buy on ice carving........1998-03-09
This book covers all the basics of modern ice sculpture and is leagues ahead of the more popular American beginning books. While it is still slightly behind on modern tool usage, it does cover basic sculpture theory that is not in other books. This book does not cover "snow blown" logo technique which is a major omission in my opinion. Also, the carvings are created for Japanese ice blocks that are a different size than the standard block here in the states. But, it is a beautiful book that offers much.

SAD STORY OF 1/2 OF ABBOTT & COSTELLO.......2007-07-25
Starts with his early years.
The beginning of Abbott & Costello.
21 years later , the break-up of Abbott & Costello.
They were two opposites.
One didn't drink, one drank heavily.
Offstage: one loud jokster, one quiet & reserved.
Both gambled heavily.
Lou's long illness.
Death of Lou's son. Plus More.
Lou the Saint......?.......2007-07-22
As a book written by his daughter it is very selective in its memory of Lou Costello...second hand memory mostly since she is Lou's youngest child and only witnessed his final 10 years in a somewhat lucid manner.
Nevertheless there is a lot of love that comes out of her description of Lou's complex life. A love that she obviously gets from an idolizing and idealised image she has formed of her parents...losing both of them at a very early age and not being on the best of terms with a lot of the rest of the family(a somewhat glossed-over fact, only tentatively described in the very last pages of the book)she writes in a rather simple somewhat scattered and disjointed manner(even though helped by a ghost writer who obviously can't do much better)about the life of her famous parent. Totally uncritical, Lou comes over in these pages as somewhat of a saint, so good it is hard to believe...somehow I feel there is another book that can be written about this elusive character..but that was obviously not the goal of Chris Costello. She does tackle the strains on the family relations, particularly the problems between Lou's overbearing italian clan and her mother and the latter's alcoholism.
Still, it is a labour of love, and for all its faults and glossing-over it is in the end a catartic book for the author who hints at a paradise lost she all too briefly inhabited in the confines of the luxurious pleasure dome her troubled and much lamented parents provided for her....
Lou's On First.......2006-02-25
I loved reading this book. Very insightful. Book came in great condition and in a very timely fashion. I tried finding this book elsewhere, but everyone else had it as out of print.
Lou's On First- First Rate!!.......2006-01-19
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about one of the greatest comedians of all time, Lou Costello. The book traces Lou's life from childhood to meeting Bud Abbott to his untimely death at such a young age. Chris Costello does not sugar coat the story and manages to give the reader an honest look into her fathers fasinating yet often troubled life. This book is a MUST HAVE for any Abbott and Costello Fan!
A touching look at the real man behind the laughs.......2004-08-02
This is a wonderful story of the real Lou Costello.
You will love him even more after reading this obvious labor of love by his youngest son. A real tribute to a special human being who enlightened all of our lives.

Book Description
How do major labels manage different genres, artists and staff? How do takeovers affect the treatment of artists? Why and how did EMI Records attempt to change their corporate culture?
Music Genres and Corporate Cultures reveals how the creation, circulation and consumption of popular music are shaped by record companies and corporate business styles. Negus examines the tension between rap's public image as the "spontaneous music of the streets" and the practicalities of the market, and asks why country labels and radio stations promote top-selling acts like Garth Brooks over hard-to-classify artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter, and how the lack of soundscan systems in Puerto Rican record shops affects salsa music's position on the US Billboard chart.
Customer Reviews:
VERY INTERESTING.......2004-03-23
This book will introduce you to the political side of the music industry while exposing you to the formulas for success that many major record labels use. It is NOT an easy read. The author's writing style is very clinical and at times, not very reader friendly. But if you are starting a label that you want to compete with the most successful ones, this book will provide you with some eye opening information about the processes used.
Excellent insider's view of the music industry.......2001-07-12
Negus, a culutral studies-oriented scholar wrote an excellent book called Popular Music In Theory: An Introduction in 1996. He continues his thorough, informed approached in this fascinating sociological, economic and ethnographic look at the recording industry.
He clearly explains the intricacies of portfolio management, marketing and targeting, resource distribution and cultural attitudes regarding the way music is created and distributed. He uses specific examples from his own primary research regarding genres like rap, country and salsa.
I am working on my Ph.D and I found the book challenging and accessible. I would recommend this to anyone who wants insights into music marketing.

Dark Cloud 2 has a lot of depth and any help you can get, even imcomplete, is appreciated........2007-03-29
There are very few RPGs that have as much depth as Dark Cloud 2, it is one of those rare PS2 games that realizes the true potential of the PS2. I can't imagine how big a complete guide would have to be for DC2. Even if this guide had only helped me a little I would have been happy, but it helped me a lot. I'm one of those players that don't like to use guides but when I do I want it to hold my hand and walk me through it and this is the only thing that keeps this guide from being 5 stars.
good information.......2006-03-25
This guide provides me a good strategy on how to progress through different stages, how to beat the boss and also have a pictoric preview of the stages I am going to walk through. This guide also have lists of photo ideas in each area and creature items list. I think this guide is valuable. I will keep it.
Helpful, Inaccurate, Incomplete.......2006-01-08
This strategy guide is extremely helpful for first time play-through, and as a reference for subsequent play-throughs, but there are a few wild inaccuracies, and some sections seemed to me to be incomplete. It contains detailed charts on fishing, weapons, photo scoops, and inventions that are invaluable and mostly accurate. It's well worth purchasing if you remember to take its information with a grain of salt.
Mediocre.......2003-10-27
This strategy guide is informative of what items you will acquire during the game. They do let you know when an inside scoop is coming up on the particular level you are on. That's as far as i can go though. Alot of info is left vague as far as step by step dungeon walk thrus which I think is why you want a strategy guide in the first place. So you don't miss key items in the game.
Evil Rabbit Seeks End of World.......2003-05-26
Dark Cloud 2 is one of those games that desperately need a strategy guide. The game simply has too much going on. While not knowing something is rarely fatal, you will miss a fair number of things if you play from the ground up. This means going back and redoing stuff when you finally figure out what is wrong (if you figure out that something is wrong) or overcompensating by extensive leveling up.
It is no surprise that this guide is over 200 pages. Prima has a high standard for attractive packaging, and this is no exception. The material is generally accurate (I did find a few glaring mistakes) but is less successful from the viewpoint of clarity and coverage. This is one of the few guides I have read where so much effort has been made to avoid spoilers that the authors forgot that a strategy guide is supposed to be part spoiler. Because of this quirk, fairly straightforward information has been obscured or left out.
Take maps, for instance. Unfortunately, there aren't any. This is a game that always rearranges its dungeons, so maps can generally be done without. But, there are fixed locations where maps would help. These areas are important sources of supplies and character improvement materials. Just the place where a little help could go a long way to ease the craziness of the game.
Another example is improving weapons. As you move along in the game, it gradually comes clear that your weapons are never strong enough. It took me a while to realize that powering up is much more complicated than either the manual or the guide indicate. If you don't catch on to this, the last parts of the game can get very frustrating.
So, this is a mixed review. I couldn't have done as well as I did with the game without the help provided by the guide. In that sense it is a great success. But what was left out contributed to a great deal of my frustration. I'm coming to the conclusion that guides are becoming too fixed on large amounts of supplemental, cool, (and basically useless) materials (to compensate for being expensive and of limited use) and less on making sure that coverage is good. Even so, I don't think the buyer is going to be disappointed, but be prepared for a lot of unexpected quirks.

A Celebration of the Power of Teaching
There is a moment for most teachers when the lure of working with kids surpasses all logic: You know, you just know, that you are meant to teach. But in the day-to-day crush of details and bus duty, politics and paperwork, or kids without their homework for the eighth day in a row, life can erode passion and distract you from your sense of purpose. This collection of stories from teachers everywhere will remind you of those magic moments when a light goes on in the eyes of a child, when resistance breaks, when hearts connect—moments that make the challenges of teaching worth every second and remind you of why you are here in the first place.

Teachers Say The Darnedest Things.......2000-01-13
Thank you for the delightful book. I am not a teacher, but I know many and know what a challenge teaching can be in this day and age. I loved the inspirational stories, but was entranced with "Labor of Love." It was a true analogy of what so many of my friends are experiencing. I hope you have the inspiration and time to write further on this subject.

Book Description
"Why do you teach, Pete?" Simple enough question, but an incredibly challenging one to answer. Peter Beidler, in the most thoughtful and honest of ways, delivers his answer in this special book. Read his words and you will have the opportunity to stop and relfect on life, contemplate why you do the things you do, and rediscover where your life takes on meaning. Beidler writes about lifelong learning through teaching, innovative teaching methods, and how teaching is rewarded continuously as former students go on to do good and useful things. Beidler says, "I teach because, being around people who are beginning to breathe, I occasionally find myself, quite magically, catching my breath with them." This book will inspire anyone who reads it. It's a wonderful keepsake to cherish and the perfect gift for any teacher, past or present, who deserves to be thanked and commemorated. Why I Teach is an essay Beidler wrote in 1985 and was later printed in Chinese textbooks for education majors. The essay is mandatory reading for 2 million students each year at 1,900 colleges in China. Beidler thinks the Chinese value the piece because it extols the benefits of public service.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful essay from a wonderful teacher.......2002-08-18
Peter G. Beidler has been the recipient of numerous accolades throughout the last several decades, a testament to his role as one of the finest educators to have ever graced this country. His essay is wonderful and deeply touching, filled with universal truths regarding the world's most important and noble career: the education of youth.
If you wish to give a small gift of appreciation to the teacher that's made the greatest impact on you, this is the book.

From the supplier: The wealth of teachers can never be measured in financial terms. Their greatest treasure lies in their students who tell them day after day that they are loved. Their reward is measured in the number of times they are praised by children or complimented for their wonderful smell. Receiving gifts, such as cheap rings and sticky candies, is another reason why most individuals develop a passion for teaching. Motivating people who are considered by others to be unfit to learn is also an encouraging thought for teachers.

Book Description
One of the most sophisticated armoured fighting vehicles in the world, the M2/M3 Bradley is the United States equivalent of the British Warrior, combining the role of personnel carrier with the formidable armament of a 25mm cannon and TOW anti-tank missiles. With a maximum road speed of 66kmh it also has a degree of manoeuvrability dreamed of by other armoured vehicles. In this book Steven Zaloga examines the different variants of the Bradley in detail and looks at the changing tactical requirements of the US Army for an armoured personnel carrier.
Customer Reviews:
Steven J. Zaloga Shines In M2/M3 Bradley.......2004-02-02
This is a deceptively small book...containing a library of information. Zaloga starts with the armored personnel carriers of the 1950s, the birth of mechanized infantry combat vehicles in the Soviet BMP and West German Marder in the late 1960s, the faltering fits and starts of American MICVs of the Vietnam era, the merging of the armored cavalry and mechanized infantry requirements into one vehicle, and even mentions why heavy infantry carriers using converted tank hulls are shunned by most armies of the world. That's eleven pages of armored infantry carrying vehicle progress before Zaloga even begins to describe the Bradley Fighting Vehicle!
Zaloga leaves no stone unturned. He quotes production figures per fiscal year. He describes the difference between the M2 infantry and M3 cavalry versions down to seating capacity and ammunition loads, with plenty of accompanying photographs. He describes when these vehicles were first fielded, and when the A1 and A2 models came out. Considerable detail is given to the weapons system, fire control, ammunition (including penetration stats!), even armor and its composition and thickness. This level of detail on a vehicle still in service is unprecedented.
The only nits I could find was that Zaloga transposed H-series and J-series organization, and considering that the book was written in the mid-1990s, he doesn't mention the reorganization of Bradley squads around 1989-1990 when the six-passenger A2 series was fielded. On pages 33 and 34, he fails to mention that the 197th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized), attached to the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized), apparently never got Bradleys and went to war with M113s with Mk 19 40mm automatic grenade launchers. The figures for the armored cavalry regiment on page 34 are also off; it should be 123 tanks and 125 plus Bradleys in the regiment, with 41 of each in three squadrons, each squadron made up of three troops of nine tanks and 13 Bradleys each and one tank company of 14 tanks.
Color plates for early-to-mid 1980s plain vanilla Bradleys are also absent, but not really missed as the overall Forest Green is pretty close to the grey in the black and white pictures. One thing I really would have liked to have seen is a list of when each unit upgraded to what model of the Bradley, but that's me.
This book has an incredible amount of useful information in it about the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Technical data precise enough to be useful for wargamers, exterior and interior detail photos model builders will find most handy, evolutionary development and Gulf War descriptions for history buffs, this little book has it all. Dating from the mid 1990s, more recent developments are lacking, but still a most useful and fact-filled tome. Outstanding value for the money.

Book Description
A stirring anthology of writings about peace and nonviolence from Buddha to Arundhati Roy As you read this, America is at war. President Bush declared a "war on terrorism" and 90 percent of the American people believed he was doing the right thing. But is there another way? From Buddha in the pre-Christian era to the most recent declaration of peace principles by Nobel laureates, nonviolence has always been an alternative. With an introduction by Howard Zinn about September 11 and the U.S. response to the terrorist attacks, The Power of Nonviolence presents the most salient and persuasive arguments for peace in the last 2,500 years of human history. Included are some of the most original thinkers and writings about peace and nonviolenceÂBuddha, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience," Jane Addams, William Penn on "the end of war," Dorothy Day's position on "Pacifism," Erich Fromm, and Rajendra Prasad. Supplementing the classic voices are more recent advocates' arguments for peace: Albert Camus' "Neither Victims Nor Executioners," A. J. Muste's impressive "Getting Rid of War," Martin Luther King's influential "Declaration of Independence from the War in Viet Nam," and Arundhati Roy's "War Is Peace," plus many others. Arranged chronologically, covering the major conflagrations of the world in the last hundred years, including the war in Afghanistan, The Power of Nonviolence is a compelling step forward in the study of pacifism, a timely anthology that fills a void for people looking for responses to crisis that are not based on guns or bombs.

Nice addition to the library.......2007-05-05
Reading through the writings of the included authors, you learn that their message is truly -timeless- and is just as relevent today as it was then.
This compilation truly brought to my attention that history repeats itself, especially if we allow the same force of violence to repeat itself.
A Must Read.......2007-01-10
This book offers good food for thought about the issues facing our world today. Even though there are works that were omitted, the ideas presented here are very worth reading.
Strong selections.......2004-01-28
I must admit that I am a bit surprised that this has received two poor reviews in a row. A quick look at the original book shows that The Power of Nonviolence was a true revision of the 60's book. The previous volume, with over 100 selections, was a haphazard affair with so many pieces that you got lost trying to keep the thread of the argument. I think that Professor Zinn should be commended for cutting out a lot of dead wood from the old book. It is curious that previous reviews have pointed out the selections because as I compared the two books I noticed that many of the selections picked out as poor choices were, in fact, part of the original volume carried over to The Power of Nonviolence.
I think the selection are top notch...I mean who really has heard of Tim Wise other than in this anthology? Which brings me to my last point: That it is the easiest criticism of any anthology to critique what it left out. By definition, an anthology should be judged by what is actually included...or so it seems to me. As a first step toward the study of nonviolence, it should be read and considered a success.
Thrown Together?.......2004-01-23
I stand second to none in my admiration of the writings and life-work of Howard Zinn. But I'm afraid this anthology is a sad disappointment, reading as if it were thrown together with too little forethought and too much regard for quick marketability. Some of the selections are more judicious than others: the Penn essay is a gem, and Emerson on war is both good and little-printed.
But many of the other selections have been printed so often that one wonders why they need to be trotted out in yet another anthology. Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" and Camus' "Neither Victims Nor Executioners" immediately come to mind. Not that these essays aren't worthy of being read; it's just that they're utterly predictable--and badly edited, at that. Other selections are so abbreviated that they appear mangled. Selections from the Buddha, Gandhi, Ikeda/Pauling are examples here. Finally, other selections seem absolutely ... well, irrelevant. Scott Nearing's selection, and Zinn's own piece on Vietnam fit into this category. Writings on Vietnam, in fact, are way over-represented in the anthology, once again causing one to suspect that old standbys were conveniently trotted out for this anthology.
There are many other better anthologies--e.g., David Barash's *Approaches to Peace.*
selections disappoint.......2003-05-24
I was tempted to chime in after reading a previous review that commended the author for his selections. I read the book and had the exact opposite reaction.
Perhaps I'm getting more conservative as I get older, but if this collection is the best representative writing from the defenders of "peace".. sorry, but I'm very worried.
Most of the selections (esp. the ones by Emerson, Thoreau, Gandhi etc.) are not their best pieces. They are either rambling or too short, and do not defend their positions adequately. In particular, they leave open the questions of "when is use of force justified?" and "how can one respond to a corrupt/despotic ruler that insists upon killing his/her opponents?" Personally, I think the author has hastily cobbled together writings from these "famous" writers, rather than actually examining/reading other pieces to cull the best defense. Granted, these writers are distinguished by their prodigious output, and selecting their best writings on peace is no easy task, but that's what I was expecting that Howard had done when we scanned and picked this book for our book club.
I was disappointed.

Book Description
EASTERN NATURALIST IN THE WEST:DALLAS LORE SHARP 1912 is an edited, enlarged reprint of an important 1914 book, WHERE ROLLS THE OREGON by Dallas Lore Sharp. During the period between 1895-1920, Dallas Lore Sharp was an extremely successful author of books on natural history subjects in North America. Aside from his books, he wrote hundreds of magazine articles for many of the popular publications of the era.
In the summer of 1912, Sharp traveled from his home in Boston to join William L. Finley in Oregon. William Finley was also a noted writer, but was better known for his wildlife photography. During that summer Finley took Sharp over a wide area in Oregon. Most of the locations they visited were areas in which Finley had done most of the photography work which made him famous.
Sharp and Finley made the dangerous climb to the sea bird colonies on Three Arch Rocks off the Oregon coast, crossed the high desert to famed Malheur marsh, rode horses into the Wallowa Mountains looking for the few remaining bighorn sheep, tried to bring a load of trout across the high desert to stock streams, and climbed Mt. Hood, all within that summer.
Dallas Lore Sharp was a keen naturalist and among the most popular nature writers of his time. Anyone with an interest in our natural history, and especially birds, will surely enjoy EASTERN NATURALIST IN THE WEST: DALLAS LORE SHARP 1912.
