Book Description
A unique assembly of Calle's own thoughts and photographs of her belongings juxtaposed with objects from Sigmund Freud's personal collection, still kept in the house where he lived.
"In February 1998, I was invited to create an exhibition entitled 'Appointment' at a house at 20 Maresfield Gardens, London, where Dr. Freud lived and died. After having a vision of my wedding dress laid across Freud's couch, I immediately accepted. I chose to display relics of my own life among the interiors of Sigmund's home."Sophie Calle
Appointment features fragments from the artist's own fascinating life story, characteristic texts that reveal intimate secrets and unravel some of Calle's childhood memories as well as her adult relationships. Calle's references to certain mementos and the emotionally charged events with which they are associated have many parallels to Freud's own psychoanalytic theories and his passion for collecting. 80 illustrations, 50 in color.

Diverse international look at decorated pottery.......1999-11-29
Brenda Pegrum has put together a very interesting collection of historic and contemporary works by artists dealing with surface decoration on pottery. Chapters are done by technique (Painting and Drawing with Slip, Painting in the Glaze, Painting with Lusters and Gold, et al.) and feature some historic background and a number of contemporary artists. All illustrations are color, thankfully, as use of color is very much a feature of the works.
Selection of approaches has been very diverse, and I think high-quality work. Everything from Ann Agee's portraits and paintings in cobalt on porcelain to some very expressive non-objective slip wares by John Pollux. Short paragraph explaining the artists views and general methods (although not a technical treatise)
The diversity of personal style and content provides a lot to discuss. Not a 'how-to" book, but fodder for considering content and decision-making in artist's work. Much to look at and consider. Highly recommended.

Description:
The use of inorganic membranes in pollution treatment is actually limited by the cost of such membranes. Advantages of inorganic membranes over organic ones are their chemical, thermal and pH resistance. In this study, low cost ZnAl"2O"4-TiO"2 ultrafiltration membranes were tested for removing Cd(NO"3)"2, Pb(NO"3)"2, Cr(NO"3)"3, methylene blue and orange acid from water. The electrical interactions between ionic species and surface material govern the rejections of heavy metals and charged species. Retentions of dyes methylene blue and orange acid are also important but the adsorption of the species leads to fouling when the concentration increases.

The Popeye origins.......1999-03-05
Contrary to what this says,vol.5 contains daily strips of Thimble Theatre from 1928-29.Those only familiar with the anmated Popeye will be quite surprised to learn that he began as a one-shot sailor for the story A Voyage to Dice Island. Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy were the main stars of Thimble theatre then.see how Popeye gradualy assumed star status, fell in love with Olive Oyl and became Castor's friend and companion.there is even a reference to the beginning of the Great Depression that year.(See the strip dated Oct.29, 1929)Popeye was much more humane and a lot funnier than any of the cartoons depicted him in later years.(Believe it or not,in this book there is absolutely no reference to spinach.)
Book Description
Robert M. Young's critically acclaimed 110-minute film Alambrista (1977) depicts the harsh realities of Mexican life on both sides of the border. Following the birth of his first child, a young Mexican slips across the border into the United States in search of the American dream for himself and his family. He finds heartbreak, exploitation, and disappointment, but also friendship, affection, and help along the way.
When first released, Alambrista received critical praise and a number of awards, including a Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. For the University of New Mexico Press release, a distinguished group of scholars has packaged a new director's cut of the film with a book of essays devoted to immigration and the U.S.-Mexican borderlands. These scholars include Albert Camarillo, Richard Griswold del Castillo, Daniel Groody, Teresa Carrillo, Howie Movshovitz, Bill Ong Hing, José Cuellar, Cordelia Candelaria, and the editors.
The director's cut includes new scenes, an improved sound track with a totally new musical score by "Dr. Loco and Los Tiburones del Norte," English subtitles, and interviews with the director and other participants. Also included with the book and DVD is an enhanced CD of the sound track.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, multi-dimensional primer on Mexican migration, and a great buy!.......2006-06-03
When I purchased this book (with accompanying dvd and cd)for a course I teach, I never expected to get so much for my money: I've just spent the better part of a day exploring just some of the resources it provides. In one beautifully-produced package, it contains the newly-enhanced "director's cut" of "Alambrista" a wonderful full-length feature film first made in 1977, which is still extremely timely and which I believe everyone in both the U.S. and Mexico should see; on the same dvd, a fine documentary on migrant children ("Children of the Fields") and amazingly substantial interviews with filmmakers, musicians and scholars. PLUS, another cut of the feature film, with a voice-over by the musical director explaining the process of designing the new soundtrack. AND, a separate song-by-song, scene-by-scene view of the music. All that, along with the book, Part One of which explores the historical and political context in well-researched, lively essays by such fine scholars as Albert Camarillo and Teresa Carillo: Part Two offers equally valuable essays on film criticism and analysis as they relate to the project. Every single element is profoundly informative, captivating and stimulating: I learned much more about immigration, border and gender issues, filmmaking and music than I ever expected. I can't wait to share the film, and its multimedia exegesis, with my students -- as well as my colleagues, family and friends. All in all, a treasure trove for anyone wishing to better understand migration in these troubled times.
Book Description
American composer John Cage (1912-1992) was without doubt one of the most important and influential figures in twentieth-century music. He spent much of his career in pursuit of an unusual goal--"giving up control so that sounds can be sounds", as he put it. As well as composing around 300 works, he was also a prolific performer, writer, poet, and visual artist. This Companion celebrates the richness and diversity of Cage's achievements and provides readers with a fully rounded portrait of a fascinating figure.

more than i expected.......2007-01-16
i'm a backgammon player for more than 20 years and this book has given me many solid and useful insights in statistics, common situations during the game, strategies etc. I loved it! Not to mention that the writer has a great gift of putting his ideas clearly and objectively.
Increased my rating on FIBS by 100.......2003-05-14
I had been stuck below 1500 on FIBS internet backgammon server for over a year. After studying this book for about a month, my rating increased by 100 points. I have since read Bill Robertie's other books, and I am now at 1650 on FIBS. The basic tips highlighted in this book are worth the cost of this book alone. To get the most out of this book, you need to use a backgammon board and play along with the diagrams, and compare what you would usually do compared to what an expert would do in the same situation. Great for beginners and intermediates!
As the title suggests, best for serious players.......2002-02-19
Dr. Robertie presents over 100 backgammon situations in this book. All of them have serious analysis. Not for the novice, but if you're a backgammon hound, it's worth the read. His analysis of the end game is especially good.
easy to read, fast progress results.......2001-02-11
I didn't know anything about backgammon: notation, strategy, etc. I read this book and found it was easy to follow the games and his annotations. Then I started beating people who previously would easily beat me. 'Nuff said.
Good lessions for medium level players.......2000-11-29
Don't wait to find here great secrets or crunch positions to study, in this this book, Bill Robertie reviews 5 whole games, between top flight players. There are good tricks on then, as he chose particular matches with diferent points of strategy. You will find basic rules of the modern way to play backgammon, by reading Robertie's reviews, but if you already mastered basic strategies and want something more instigating, look for Kit Woolsey's New Ideas in Backgammon.

If you want to laugh until you cry, then read this book! Phillip Done captures all the joys of teaching and expresses it in a way that is hilarious. As I tried to share passages with my family, I couldn't get it out because I was laughing so hard. Anyone who has taught or is starting their first year of teaching should definitely read this. Entertaining!.......2007-06-19
If you teach, this is a MUST read!
wonderful.......2007-03-13
Mr. Done was my fourth grade teacher. I was positively THRILLED when I realized he had written a book. He was, by far, one of my most memorable teachers to this day. His book is amazing, and brought back a lot of awesome memories I have of elementary school. Excellent read.
A wonderful book.......2007-03-09
I recommend this book highly for readers of just about any age. It will be enjoyed by anyone who is a teacher, was a teacher, or ever had a teacher! Many times I had to stop reading to wipe away the tears of laughter.
Great Teacher Gift.......2007-01-19
We purchased this book as a gift for our son's third grade teacher at the beginning of the school year. She really enjoyed it and is sharing it with other teachers. It is a good read for new or young teachers that will appreciate the anecdotal funniness of this author in describing a job that is often thankless.

Book Description
He was a Soviet Top Gun-yet left all of the power and glory behind when he engineered the most audacious act of defection in Cold War history. On May 20, 1989, Soviet Air Force Captain Alexander Zuyev escaped from an air base in Soviet Georgia. Under the threat of Russian air defense missiles, and with other fighters in hot pursuit, Zuyev carried out a real-life flight to freedom even more breathtaking then classic works of fiction like The Hunt for Red October and Fire Fox.
Customer Reviews:
Fulcrum: A Top Gun Pilot's Escape from the Soviet Empire.......2007-07-28
This is one of the most powerful books I've ever read. Alexander Zuyev's escape in the stolen Mig 29 in incredible, and his integrity to leave the USSR, when he was in a position to have all the wealth you could ever want, makes him a big hero.
The obstacles he overcame in his own life, to become a fighter pilot, is also inspiring.
Great book, when it sticks to its story.......2003-02-15
"Fulcrum" tells the story of Alex Zuyev, a Soviet fighter pilot who flew his MiG-29 fighter across the Black Sea to Turkey in the spring of 1989. An experienced and gifted aviator, Zuyev was never enamored with communism long enough t become disillusioned with it. "Fulcrum" recounts Zuyev's childhood, joining the VVS, training for fighter pilot duty, and managing to miss Afghanistan (though he lobbied hard to go into a combat unit, his skills made him a natural choice for the first slot chosen to fly the advanced MiG-29). At every turn, Zuyev is beaten down by the rigors of living in the CCCP - mindless dogmatism dominate much of the citizenry, while corruption and cronyism typify life among the higher-levels. By 1985 and Gorbachev, the Soviet Union is terminal - with the economy in shambles and Afghnanistan bleeding the cream of the Russian military blind. Even Gorbachev's good intentions backfire (like an experiment in prohibition that only invigorates the black market for Vodka, and drives everybody else to kill themselves seeking more dangerous substances to feed the national tradition of alcoholism). Frustrated with the Soviet government, and fearing that he might be ordered to fly strike missions against civilian unrest, Zuyev decided it was time to get out. Though admitting he knew safer ways to escape the Soviet Union (he openly scoffed at the myth that the Soviet frontier is an impassible wall), Zuyev decides that his defection will be spectacular. Concocting an elaborate plan involving a cake spiked with sleeping pills, Zuyev plots to steal one of his squadron's MiG-29's, along with its advanced missiles. Nothing goes according to plan, but Zuyev manages to get his jet to freedom (only to see it handed back to the Russians, missiles and all once he is granted asylum in Turkey).
"Fulcrum" is both enlightening and disappointing. Certainly we've got a more inside look at the insides of Soviet life and the red military machine than we've had before, but the resulting story is one we've read about or heard about countless times - that life in the CCCP was a dispiriting grind between corruption and greed in the inner circles and robotic communism and deprivation everywhere else. Doubtless, the Soviets deserved their bad rap, but there's little point to writing a book that does more to feed our biases than informs them. Zuyev gives us an unparalleled look into the VVS, the branch of Soviet Military dedicated to long-range, offensive air operations (The Soviets had no single branch of the military for their Air Force, much as our AF was little more than a branch of the army until 1947). At that point, "Fulcrum" rules, surpassing "MiG Pilot", the true story of Viktor Belenko who flew to the west in the seventies. The novelty of concentrating on characters who otherwise exist as missile-fodder in Dale Brown novels is worth the price of the book. Unfortunately, book seldom focuses on dedicated red fliers and their cranky MiGs - frequently interrupted to more anecdotes about the nightmare of soviet life. Worse, when Zuyev does get back to being a fighter pilot, Zuyev never conveys what it's like to actually fly one of those amazing machines we call tactical aircraft. This is especially annoying because Zuyev's background provided an excellent method for fleshing out the experience of flying the MiG-29: his prior experience flying the older, faster but less agile MiG-23. Each plane is so distinct from the other, that each also provides a perfect counterpoint to the other. Zuyev manages to entirely skip the sensation of first flying the -23, his first combat aircraft (while the -23 was not new when Zuyev first completed flight training, his class was the first to skip the older MiG-21). Though stories of soviet life are necessary to frame the context of Zuyev's story, Zuyev turns that aspect of the story into the main story, one that overshadows even the wonder plane that becomes Zuyev's future. Instead the story of being a MiG pilot (the one I cracked open this book expecting to read) is painfully abbreviated. We don't even get a meaningful look into the flaws of the new jet (which had the directional instability common to contemporary aircraft of the west, but lacked the computer-augmented fly-by-wire controls standard in such aircraft; Zuyev mentions a flaw in the -29's early radar, but apparently one rectified earlier, since he never details it in his own plane; though gifted with supreme agility for a dogfighter, the MiG-29's small size meant it had painfully short range, while its pilots lacked the unobstructed visibility enjoyed by western pilots, and otherwise essential for dogfighting). Zuyev further muddies the book when taking another path entirely - detailing a list of now revealed Soviet secrets, including those dealing with the fate of American POWs, and Soviet decisionmaking in the 1983 KAL shootdown. While those subjects are important, the book places far too much importance on Zuyev's perspective merely because he is a Soviet, even though his personal proximity to those secrets is only slightly closer than that of the rest of us. (I doubt very many Americans would accept a similar account on the Iranian Airbus incident or the Stark incident merely because they came from US sailors who were otherwise nowhere near those incidents when they occurred).
In short, "Fulcrum" is two books - a very often excellent book on an underserved topic, but an even more frequently frustrating book that gets in the way of the more interesting story.
What an amazing book!.......2002-03-17
...This book taught me a lot about life. There were so many obstacles he had to overcome. I have always been amazed by the strength and endurance this man had.I never knew a person could endure such hardships and still be so unbelievably focused. When I get depressed and feel I'M having hard times I always think back to his story and feel ashamed of myself for thinking so selfishly. He was truly a sensitive and beautiful soul... This book shows the determined and powerful side of Alex, and his story is truly incredible. I honestly hope you will take the time to read the book. It will take you on a trip that you never though possible. The adreneline rush, the tears, the love, and most important, the incredible adventures of Alexander Zuyev...
The world has lost a courageous individual........2001-06-13
I just saw an Associated Press news article telling of the death of Alexander Zuyev on June 10, 2001. He was only 40 years old. He and a friend died last Sunday when the Yakovlev 52 they were flying crashed in Washington state north of Seattle.
Read this book. It gives a fascinating description not only of growing up in the Soviet Union but of the difficulty of becoming a military pilot. It also gives a sickening picture of just how badly communism chewed up and destroyed its best people: Zuyev's own mother--whom he rescued--and some of his fellow pilots who weren't so lucky. His decision to defect was not made lightly or easily. The corruption and contradictions he saw were too much to take anymore. He had the courage to leave it all behind and take a chance with a nation he had been told so many lies about. The drugged cake was a stroke of genius.
Sadly, a plane crash has done what a sentry's bullet in the arm did not. This world is a poorer place. I never met him but I wish I had, if only to say "Thank you."
Truth is Stranger Than Fiction.......1999-02-10
I lived in Russia for most of this decade (1990s). While there I borrowed "Fulcrum" from a friend. It was exciting reading, especially while living in Russia. I found that the book accurately reflected the life I was experiencing everyday in Russia (a lot didn't change--even after the fall of the USSR.) This book is an absolute MUST reading for anyone who really wants to get behind the scenes and understand how life really works in the former Soviet Union. It is a pity that this book is no longer available and I seriously wonder if the KGB had something to do with it going out of print, as it is one of the most accurate books I have ever read. I hope that sometime soon this book can again be available and widely circulated.
Customer Reviews:
Zuyev reveals a wealth of insider's information on the USSR.......2006-11-13
This book is about Captain Alexander Zuyev's life and carreer and the reasons that made him to escape from the USSR in May 1989, taking a MiG-29 to the Turkish airport of Trabzon. The reader can follow the whole life of Zuyev and all the important events that shaped it, starting from his childhood in Samara and going till his new start in San Diego, California. There is ample materila here for the fans of military aviation, like the tactics that the Soviet pilots used in air combat, description of MiG-23 and MiG-29 fighters and their strong and weak points and a lot of facts about the corrupted environment of the Soviet military and political system of the '80s. Some of the reasons for Zuyev's escape had to do Zuyev's escape (and probably not the less important) had to do with his failed marriage and his desire to set free from a worsening situation in his personal life. The escpape flight takes only a few pages in the last chapters and his life in the US is described in a couple of pages, since the book was written in 1992. It would be ver interesting to know Zuyev's opinion of the American way of life after some years in the US but the book was published very soon after the escape. Unfortunately, Zuyev was killed in June 2001, when his civilian plane crashed near Seattle. The book has some black and white photographs but there is none of the MiG-29 nor a map of the escape flight.
Book Description
Congressman Weldon exposes a deeply dysfunctional culture and perverse political agendas in American intelligence that are endangering American security. He also explains why the recent restructuring of the intelligence agencies will do nothing to fix our broken and failing intelligence services.
Customer Reviews:
The greatest intelligence failure of them all .......2006-11-03
It may turn out that the greatest American Intelligence debacle in recent years has been its failure to understand exactly how Iran was secretly building its own nuclear terror-option, and establishing proxies to help further its aim of destroying Western Civilization. In their refusing to speak with the Iranian exile Ali the US Intelligence agents seem to have been doing a self- defeating thing. James Woolsey has written that a good Intelligence operation is open to outside sources, and does not rely on its own closed cadre of informers. According to Weldon on this grounds alone U.S. Intelligence in recent years has proven sorely lacking.
It is a year since Rep. Weldon published this book but in that year we have seen an increasingly defiant Iran continue to push towards nuclear weapons, continue to threaten the destruction of Israel, and eventually the United States. Protected by Russian and Chinese vetoes at the U.N. Security Council Iran is scorning Western demands that it not move towards nuclear weapons.
There is a real question of whether poor Intelligence might diminish greatly the effectiveness of a US preemptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
Another element of the danger presented by Iran is its connected to Shiite groups in Iraq, and its influence on the raging civil - war in that country. There is even here suggested a connection between Al - Quaeda and Iran with the common aim of making a major terror strike against a U.S. city.
Again though it is impossible for the layman to know which of the threats raised in this book are 'realistic ' ones it is clear that the U.S. Intelligence Community must make new efforts to attain detailed information on what is going on in Iran. And in that cannot afford to dismiss sources like the one upon which this book is based.
Iran is our #1 foe - ad infinitum.......2006-07-02
A very bothersome book. As the other reviews indicate, this is Congressman Weldon's plea to the American people to give him the fair hearing that he lacks in the intelligence community. Weldon derives his stuff exclusively from an Iranian national under the former Shah whom Weldon met in Paris. Every page of this book is a recurring laundry list of Iran's policy of destruction against the U.S. via nuclear armaments (internally or from N Korea) or through Iraq. Over and over the same thing with differing degrees of passion. These familiar reports are peppered with frustrations within the intelligence community and with pleas to us the American reader to listen where the CIA and/or FBI won't.
Weldon then finishes his book by summing his cure-alls for the intelligence community. He condemns the 9/11 commission for "butchering" the community, but then he recommends sacking most if not all of the senior brass in the community to make room for suppressed but worthy subordinate agents who are not politically motivated or inflexible in method and analysis (claiming this move will not shake up the community as much as it might seem). He goes on to urge human intelligence over signals intelligence (something stressed in the 9/11 report and in other FBI writings of late). All in all, he wants us to listen to him, or rather listen to Ali through him.
I found the laundry lists familiar through daily or weekly news reports via other media. I found them boring page after page, and I disliked Weldon's infallible omniscience in prescribing Weldonesque fixes for America's intelligence and security problems (and his "I told you so" tone, citing his own warnings about security prior to 9/11).
Not worth the price, barely worth the reading.
Give Congressman Weldon your ear please........2006-03-10
He trid to tell people that Muhammed Atta's cell in Brooklyn was known a year before 911, deaf ears. That is why he wrote this book. Give him a chance to tell you what he found! Weldon writes even better than he speaks. A presentation last month in Phoenix was moving, full of personal anecdotes about 911. But in order to move on, learn, and prevent, we need facts, dates, and names. This book provides those in abundance. Also happens to be a "thriller" to read (except, real life!).
This a.m. on CBS News: "Iranian-backed militias running death squads in Iraq." .......2005-11-18
Creepy...I finished the book last night and woke up to the aforementioned CBS News report, something that Rep. Weldon's insider "Ali" had been reporting all along.
Unfortunately, for Weldon's critics and all Americans, this is just one more example "Ali's" warnings being proven true. I can only pray that our geniuses in Intelligence will quit their posturing long enough to thwart Al Qaeda and their planned arrival of the "12th Imam", a scenario that is Islam's equivalent to Christianity's Apocolypse. As for the rest of us, it may be time to start practicing how to "dive and take cover"...
No, Thank You !!! I'm Full.......2005-11-11
I find it pretty shameful that after all that "evidences" of WMD in Iraq and sham of US and UK intelligence agencies, some politicians still want to make a fool out of public, pushing their rubbish down people's throat; so, No thank you !!! I'm already full from Iraq.

Iranian VEVAK has already ridiculed West's intelligence agencies through the so called "visionary" politicians and their credible channels enough; let's just for once leave CIA do its job properly without Alis or Chalabis.

Customer Reviews:
excellent!.......2007-08-23
The pictures are wonderful! I have a bird feeder outside my window and have seen many birds that I didn't recognize. The pictures are perfect! I now know what type they are. Other bird books have either drawings or the pictures aren't very clear, or show a terrible likeness...with these pictures I know exactly what I'm looking at! And the information about them is very interesting.
