Book Description
More a “how-to-see-it” than a “how-to-do-it” book, this edition explores the disguises and characteristics of shapes and forms in nature, and it examines the visual elements and the relational, moving, and emotive forces that constitute the language of drawing.
Clear and objective, this book offers an intensive examination of vital drawing processes and concepts, an in-depth analysis of exceptional drawings by old and contemporary artists, and suggested exercises to enhance the readers' grasp of important measurable and dynamic phenomena.
For the art student, the art teacher, the interested amateur, and the practicing artist.

Excellent insight into Master artists drawings.......2006-08-27
I love this book; re-read from time to time. The comments on the classical drawings by the early Masters are insightful and inspiring.
How to see drawings.......2004-04-17
I have used this book for years as source material for the college level drawing courses I teach. Its greatest value is the high calibre of master drawing examples by everyone from Michelangelo to Rembrandt and Watteau, as well as appropriate and sensitive student examples. Mr. Goldstein breaks down the approach to drawing into contour line, structural line, shape, gesture, volume, combination drawing. The book is dense with writing as this is largely a verbal analysis of visual issues in which each drawing example is discussed in a very detailed manner. Some may find the approach too verbose, and indeed this is not a "how-to-draw" book in the "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" category, but more of a guide to conoisseurship and the philosophy of drawing. In fact, there are precious few exercises described for the student. I think that for the drawing student who does not have the benefit of a teacher, this book paired with a more practical "how-to" guide would be a terrific resource. This is the kind of book you will find yourself dipping into over the years. I always have it on an easy-to-reach shelf.
Goldstein is Gold.......2001-07-12
I bought this book for a college drawing class. And later on, because of scheduling reasons, I was unable to take the class. However, I kept the book and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The pictures are great...although I thought the spectrum of drawings could have been a little broader. Most pictures are black and white. Commentary is good--a nice balance between words and pictures. Goldstein has done well with this book.

Book Description
"I'm going to Troy!"
With these simple words, the poor cowherd Paris lights the fire which will become one of the most famous conflagrations of all time--the legendary Trojan War. When Paris reaches the magnificent city of Troy, he discovers a lifelong secret hidden from him by Troy's king, Priam. From that moment Paris begins a daring journey that will lead him to the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta.
Helen's fateful decision to forsake her homeland and join Paris brings sorrow to thousands--to her husband Menelaus, deserted without cause or explanation--to the young king Odysseus, who faces decades of separation from his wife and infant son--and to the priestess Thetis, whose son, Achilles, must choose between long life at home and glorious death battling before Troy.
Drawn from the myths and legends of centuries, A Thousand Ships presents anew for the twenty-first century the complete prelude to the Trojan War--each sensual touch, every savage blow, the smiles and tears, the lust and betrayal, the entire tapestry of drama and action. Eric Shanower's historically accurate illustrations and compelling dialogue bring new life to this ancient epic.

good as supporting material.......2004-08-15
I never thought I'd be pleased with a comic book of any kind. I'm just not the type. But after reading great reviews of this project in an archeology magazine, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. Yes, it's simple; it's written for young folks. But it's strength lies in its ability to help the reader track the many players in this epic. A straight reading in a standard text can become confusing due to the many characters with unusual names who flit in and out. Here, by adding the concrete pictures, it becomes easier to stay focused on the main themes without getting bogged down by "now, who was that again?".
A Great Book with a Great Premise.......2004-04-09
Being a Latin scholar, I find myself drawn to all things Classical. Being a teenager, I find myself drawn to the more "slacker"-y things in life. This book combines the two elements perfectly! The book was reccomended to me by my latin teacher, and I read it swiftly in less than one day. My only warning would be the slightly explicit scenes in the book which elicited giggles from my (oh-so-very-mature) AP Latin class.
Average at best........2003-04-02
I have loved ancient history and mythology since I was a wee pup. Unfortunately I found "Age of Bronze - A thousand ships" somewhat disappointing. The Bronze Age feel to the drawings was interesting but they were not terribly artistic. The quality of the dialogue is fair but way below any classical Greek literature, which helps to make the story drag (quite unlike the original Iliad). The lack of Gods or spirits (as such) also helps to squeeze out the magic. The [explicits] and violence is PG-13. The glossary of names, genealogical chart, and bibliography are very good.
Great mix of ancient myths, modern storytelling.......2002-09-17
Even though the Trojan War is one of our oldest stories, almost every generation since Homer has felt the need to retell it in its own way. This new version by Shanower is one of the best in a long, long time. Visually it is spectacular -- he spent a great deal of time studying the ruins of Mycenean Greece, Troy, the Hittites, and so forth to give as accurate a portrayal of the people and places as possible. Gone are the classical fashions, weapons, and architecture... what we have is the real, much earlier bronze age. And the storytelling is fantastic. It's clearly a modern take on the story, but this does not mean the characters speak with hip come-backs or slang. Instead, we see political intrigue, rounded characters, strong women, and a serious attempt to rationalize some of the more outlandish aspects of the story. He draws from Greek, Roman, and medieval sources and manages to weave together a highly informed, vivid reading experience. I started reading this on the suggestion of several accomplished archaeologists, but keep reading because it is so enjoyable.
Brings to life the legend of the Trojan War.......2001-07-05
In A Thousand Ships, graphic novelist Eric Shanower brings to life the legend of the Trojan War, gathering the many different versions of the fabulous Greek myth into a single, illustrated and dramatic story line. What sets apart Shanower's graphic novel is the attention to historical detail, a superb talent as an artist, and a powerful flair for storytelling. A Thousand Ships is a gripping presentation perfectly suited to a modern readership and brings this age-old tale to a whole new generation of readers. All the fabled Greek characters are here, from Paris (a Trojan Prince), Helen (whose beauty precipitated the most famous war in Hellenic history); Achilles, Odysseus, Hector, Ajax, and the rest. Focusing on the events that led up to the war, A Thousand Ships is the debut volume in a planned series. If you only have time for a single graphic novel this month, make it Eric Shanower's A Thousand Ships!

Doesn't really give me a process.......2003-06-15
I've read many screenwriting books, and this book didn't tell me anything I haven't read elsewhere. Walter has no real insight into the writing process, just some knowledge of the business which you can pick up from the other books. A disappointment.
Another book from a professional TEACHER.......2002-12-24
Richard Walter is, once again, very good at rehashing other people's ideas, whether it's from screenwriters he's talked to, reading the trades, or hanging out with other screenwriting professors. What he can't and doesn't do is bring his own insight and talent to the job, because he's not a screenwriter, producer or agent. This book is no worse than some other books written for absolute beginners, but you can learn more specifics and tricks of the trade by reading books by actual pro's.
A fat-free book.......2001-01-09
This book is not only helpful to screenwriters, but it's immensely helpful to beginning writers of fiction, too! It's one of the FEW I've seen where the author gets right to the meat without wasting page after endless page analyzing films or offering up screenplays of his own or those of students. If you want someone to get to the point about screenplays and storytelling, this is it! A must-read!
Cuts to the Chase -- Entertain'g Guide by Authority in Field.......1998-08-28
UCLA Screenwriting Program Guru Richard Walter has created an interesting, comprehensive guide to creating, reworking and marketing screenplays. Read Fields to get a few ideas and ground rules about act structure and plot points, read Walter to for a concise, entertaining orientation that leads you to write.

Customer Reviews:
Only for those who call themselves musicians.......2006-12-19
As a drummer in a progressive band, I'm always working to improve my playing in odd time signatures. This book has proved incredibly helpful in developing my musical vocabulary.
The book breaks each time signature down into several sections. It starts with simple patterns played by your hands, then on a snare, then on a snare with ostinato bass drum parts. Once these simple exercises are mastered at various tempi, the book takes a small number of examples and places them on the drum set. Each time signature has several drum set playing examples and a song chart. Each exercise and song is on a CD that comes with the book; each exercise is played twice through and each song has a version with drums and a version without that can be played with.
If terms such as ostinato confuse you, or you don't know what a song chart is or how to read it, this book is probably not for you. Odd time signatures cannot be learned overnight; only those with the mindset of a serious musician who are willing to invest time following the directions exactly will learn from this book. The author also expects whoever is using this book to write out their own riffs in each time signature, and to apply those riffs to drum set. This is an essential part of the book; it makes the student think of odd time signatures both technically and as grooves, and allows the student to develop their own drum parts.
With that said, if you are willing to invest the time in this book and want to learn, it is essential to have in your library. I've only reached the 7/8 section of the book, and already I can write out my own, fluent drum set parts in odd times, then transfer the notes on a page into an interesting and fun groove.

EXCENLENT.......2007-03-20
EXCELENT BOOK , very good quality paper and printing , and the guide is very clear , and handy
I'm going back to GameFAQS.......2006-09-06
I bought this guide and was very disappointed. I normally just read user made walkthroughs but thought it would b e useful to have a book with maps. My main complaint is that the book just gives the bosses main information and not any strategies to defeating them. Save your money and don't buy this.
Great Item.......2006-07-31
If you are looking for a good strategy guide for this game then this is the one for you. And when I got it it was in great condition. I suggest it to anyone who is in love with the Star Ocean series.
Fun RPG.......2006-03-12
This RPG was great fun if you enjoy picking your players and experimenting with weapons and magic. It starts in the future and travels into the past, ending back in the future. It has extra dungeons after you solve the game which really enhances play time. The only thing I didn't care for is in a battle you could only select one character at a time and the other two characters fight by computer selection which was not always a good thing. Other than that, if you love RPGs with a fun story this is a great game.
You Need This Book to Play This Game.......2006-01-15
If you bought Star Ocean recently and thought you could get away without having a strategy guide, you're going to get frustrated and toss the game. Or you may decide to just be frugal and use an online guide; but will get lost using it and eventually give up playing. You NEED this strategy guide.
Here are some reasons why:
-Locations in the game aren't marked on the map, they are color coded. This book gives you an area by area map of all the items and the locations to different zones. This helps a lot when you have to backtrack and forget which zone goes into where. (And you will backtrack several times)
-It helps BIG TIME with bosses who have high HP, but low MP. You don't always know what you're going against, and if you're prepared it makes things easier.
-In terms of the insanely intricate crafting system on Star Ocean, it's going to be a no-brainer that you'll be using the book non-stop. The guides on GAMEfaqs.com and IGN don't help you out well enough to figure out what items you need, and how to craft.
-Private Actions/Endings: The game can be beaten several different ways (I believe it's seven, much like Chrono Trigger). This guides helps you determine what endings you want to see first.
-Character Standings: This is another big thing the guide covers which online guides can't help you out on. This shows you what private actions determine your standing with that character, which in turn, determines how well they fight for you.
Like others have been saying, you'll be doing a lot of page flipping, back and forth checking the maps on where to go next. A good pullout page for the map locations would have been a lot better than the crafting system map they provided instead. Either way though, I couldn't have beat the game without this.
I've been playing RPGs for over 13 years, and I've never had to rely on a strategy guide as much as this one. I seriously suggest buying this book if you are really interested in beating the game. Stop being cheap and get a copy before they go out of stock.

Book Description
Air-dropping agents deep behind enemy lines in clandestine night missions during the Korean War, commanding secret flights into Tibet in 1960 to support the anticommunist guerilla uprising, participating in plans for the 1962 Bay of Pigs invasion---even before the escalation of the Vietnam War, Brigadier General Harry C. "Heinie" Aderholt worked at the heart of both the U.S. Air Force and CIA special operations worldwide. In 1964 he became commander of the famed First Air Commando Wing, fighting to build up special operations capabilities among the American and South Vietnamese airmen. In 1966 and 1967 he and his men set the record for interdicting the flow of enemy trucks over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and North Vietnam.
Drawing on official records, personal papers, and interviews with Aderholt and many who worked with him, Air Force historian Warren A. Trest relates the life of this unconventional and legendary figure of the Cold War.
Customer Reviews:
"Air Commando One".......2007-09-22
Having served under Heinie Aderholt in Thailand I can certainly vouch for the accuracy of the scearios portrayed. Although I wasn't an Air Commando in the strictest sense of the word (I was a broadcaster), I was aware enough of the problems with "higher headquarters" to be genuinely incensed at the treatments ... particularly in light of the tremendously effective mission performed in spite of "direction" from above. I absolutley loved the book, as it brought back memories I'd almost forgotten. Everyone who knew Heinie HAS to have this book!!
Air Commando One.......2006-02-27
Book arrived within a few days and was in the condition that it was described or better, very happy with there service.
The patron saint of unconventional warfare.......2003-01-17
During the Vietnam era, Heinie Aderholt was U.S. air force's patron saint of low-cost, bare-knuckled, unconventional warfare. He was one of two men -- the other being his longtime friend, the CIA's Bill Lair -- to put his personal stamp on the huge covert program in Laos, and had there been more Aderholts and Lairs, events might have turned out differently. As it was, Aderholt had to labor during his entire career under a military system that was not flexible enough, or responsive enough, for a man of his remarkable talents. But he did his duty, and then some. The Air Force historian Warren Trest has done Aderholt justice with this book; and there's some especially interesting material on Aderholt's loyal opposition, from within, to the way the Vietnam war was run.
A Man Who Makes A Difference: Always.......2002-12-14
Heinie is a legend but not from others tales of his exploits. Heine is leader respected for his legendary achievements; some of which yet remain classified. A leader formost who undertood his men because he always remained one of them. No matter how severe the circumstance Heinie created success by unique applications in unconventional operations.
At Nakhon Phanom for example, on the border of Laos, Heinie founded and commanded the 56th Air commando Wing into a unique force to interdict the flow of men and materials down the trails in Laos. Making the rounds nightly he remained close with his troops of all rank in a bond seldom seen where thoughts were exchanged because of mutual respect. Heinie slept less than most and almost always in his fatigues or flightsuit.
General Aderholt's life story is compelling and well written and he continues today to make a difference in Southeast Asia. In October 2002 returning to Nakhon Phanom, Heinie procured a container of medical and school supplies with the Thailand Laos Cambodia Brotherhood and to dedicate a monument being built to honor the fallen American and Thai forces in the Vietnam War.
The Legend Continues... read it.

A little disappointed.......2002-11-09
Having heard of Heinie Aderholt for years, I was looking forward to reading his autobiography. While the book is very informative, I was somewhat disappointed in the overall content. Maybe it's due to his age, but there were some assertions made that don't jive with the facts. He states that the Air Force misused the C-130s in Vietnam by limiting their gross weight. In reality, C-130s in Southeast Asia operated at their maximum allowable normal gross weights and payloads throughout the war - I was a C-130 loadmaster on two SEA tours and know the limitations. There is also quite a bit of personal horn-blowing, which is common with autobiographies. I found it rather ironic that Heinie's comments related to special operations are almost identical to those made by his former boss, General William Tunner, about how airlift was misused and should be a command of its own. There's also the constant refrain of "if they had left it up to us, we'd have won the war" but now that the facts are coming out, it is becoming pretty apparent that there was no way we were going to win it. Air Commando One is a good book for the military historian's bookshelf.

Book Description
Americans have a love-hate relationship with negative campaigning, claiming to despise it and ranting about how it turns off the electorate, while at the same time paying an increasing amount of attention to negative ads and tactics during ever-lengthening campaign seasons. Swint gathers the most compelling of these campaigns from the two "Golden Ages" of negative campaigning--1864 to 1892 and 1988 to the present--in addition to some that fall outside those demarcations, and ranks them in descending order, from No. 25 to No. 1. Mudslingers covers presidential, senatorial, gubernatorial, and mayoral races and chronicles the dirtiest, most low-down campaign tactics of all time. The list includes the presidential campaign of 1800, when the disputed outcome of the race between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had to be decided by the House of Representatives, and the election of 2004, in which George W. Bush beat John Kerry after one of the nastiest showdowns on record. The first round of negative campaigning in American history was driven by post-Civil War politics, the end of Reconstruction, an increasingly corrupt federal government, and a rabid partisan press. The current Golden Age of mudslinging and dirty politics is driven by huge increases in campaign spending, television advertising, decreased civility in public life, and a muckraking mass media. These fascinating stories from the annals of negative campaigning will entertain as well as educate, reminding us, the next time we are tempted to decry the current climate, that it was (almost) ever thus.
Customer Reviews:
Fun analysis of nasty campaigns, but some of the chapters are a bit thin.......2007-01-30
When I saw Mudslingers reviewed by John Fund in the Wall Street Journal I was intrigued. I love politics, and for political junkies like myself nothing beats reading about a nasty campaign. I waited a little for the price tag to go down, but since it was never lowered, I broke down and bought it. I was pretty happy with the book. Mudslingers attempts to rank the top 25 most vicious American political campaigns. The book is a very interesting read, but a lot of its analysis is pretty thin and leaves something to be desired.
Many of the campaigns the book looks at are pretty well known. These include presidential contests: Bush v. Kerry in 2004, Bush v. Dukakis, 1988, and Nixon v. McGovern in 1972. The author does a good job bringing up the salacious details from these campaigns like the Swift Boat and Willy Horton commercials. Reading about them is fun. But the best parts of the book are the campaigns that aren't known by most people either because they weren't national races or they occurred over 100 years ago.
Two particular favorites of mine which I vividly remember despite only being a kid at the time are from New York: the brutal 1998 U.S. Senate race between Chuck Schumer and Al D'Amato and the 1989/1993 mayoral campaigns between David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani. While these races were a while ago, they were incredibly memorable. I almost forgot about D'Amato's famous putzhead insult, and I loved the discussion of D'Amato's hard nosed (and often shameless politicking) which including going to synagogues with his own yarmulke stitched with the name Alphonse. The two close races between Dinkins and Rudy were also classics, and the book does well exploring how much they divided the Big Apple, especially in the wake of the Crown Heights riots.
Being a Jersey political guy, I also took a twinge of pride that several New Jersey races made the top 25 (how could the Garden State not be included in a discussion of negative campaigns?). The 1996 Torricelli-Zimmer battle was very bitter, though I was a bit disappointed the 1994 Lautenberg-Haytaian face-off was ignored as that race was legendary for its nastiness. There are some other gems like Harold Washington's groundbreaking run for Chicago mayor in 1983, the Edwin Edwards v. David Duke Louisiana governor's race, and the Robb-Ollie North Senate campaign. All of them are covered in pretty decent detail. Perhaps the best one was the 1990 Senate race between Senator Jesse Helms and Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt. If you don't know about the famous "Hands" commercial that cost Gantt the election, this book is a good read for you. That might be the most devastatingly effective commercial in a non-presidential race ever.
Mudslingers is a good read, though perhaps not worth the $45 price tag. I don't think the chapters are big enough to warrant shelling out that much money. Still, if you love politics and campaigning the book is definitely worth checking out, even if the analyses could have been thicker.

Turkeys, Joe Hutto writes, have gotten a bad rap for being, well, stupid creatures. In his account of a year spent studying a flock of wild turkeys in the loblolly pine woods of Florida, he aims to improve their reputation. They are, he notes, masters of disguise, blending in with their surroundings in ways so subtle as to make the work of predators--especially human hunters--difficult. And, he writes, they are "curious to a fault, want a working understanding of every aspect of their surroundings, and their memory is impeccable." His affectionate portrait may not convince English speakers to stop calling each other turkeys, but it will make welcome reading for birders and wildfowl enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT ANIMAL FRIENDSHIP BOOK.......2007-02-20
I loved this book about Mr Hutto spending a season with wild turkeys and befriending them. I read an earlier version of this paperback the year before last and I loved and absolutely enjoyed it. There should be more kindhearted animal loving people in the world like Mr. Hutto. I also loved the illustrations in this book. They are phenomenal. I loved the story and the photographs. Well written. If you love a book about wild animals, or animals period, this book is for you. Not only is this man a great writer but also a great photographer and illustrator/artist as well. A MUST READ.
Illumination In the Flatwoods.......2006-09-12
Although I could not afford to purchase this book, I was delighted to get a copy from my library. I love the animal/human relationship, esp. when taken to its magical realm; the doors that open when entrusted by an animal. The sketches are sweet, simple and relay so much feeling; they are art. For a human to reach for this level of relationship is remarkable and to have it returned by animals is magical. Esp. the last par.: "...by some language that we both understand but cannot speak, and I could say: 'I know you, old friend. I recognize you by your iridescence, your incandescence, your illumination - I recognize you by your loneliness-you must be my brother.'" This book is a sort of recollection of who we are - our purpose. I love the double meaning of illuminated.
A wonderful story.......2005-07-04
I believe this book is now out of print and I cannot imagine why. I have been a reader of nature oriented literature all of my life and feel that this is among the top 10 or 15. Extremely moving account of a biologists relationship with a group of wild turkeys raised and imprinted by the author. Read this!!
Joe Hutto, writer extraordinaire.......2003-11-14
This is an incredibly beautifully written book. I never thought I would find it so interesting and spellbinding. I was doubtful when first beginning the book that the author would be able to maintain his observer status, but he did so remarkably well, raising the turkeys to be real wild turkeys. As I read the final line in the book, I felt I was closing a chapter in my life in which I had personally been involved with the turkeys and the author. I was impressed with Mr. Hutto's dedication to these remarkable birds, his keen observations, and also with his obvious "connection" to them. I hope he will write again in the future.
Simply inspiring and heartfelt........2002-06-03
Beautifully written and truly amazing feat accomplished by Mr. Hutto. Many can raise wild turkeys in their own world, however, it took a man with great conviction and love for the bird and it's environment to reverse the process and let the poults raise him. I couldn't put this book down and fell in love with the characters. In closing, I truly admire Mr. Hutto for his dedication and am thankful I don't hunt anywhere near TurkeyBoy's range as I don't believe I could pull the trigger on a bird that has survived the perils he has faced throughout his life.

To be flipper-slapped by a bird whose wings are powerful enough to propel it swiftly through frigid waters? To look into the oddly expressive eyes of a penguin chick? With charming watercolors and intriguing journal entries, this book inspires our curiosity. Sophie Webb gives readers a vivid, frank, firsthand account of what it is like to spend a season in a land not yet affected by people, yet populated for centuries by true dwellers of the Antarctic the fearless, round-bellied, pink-footed, gliding, diving, utterly adept Adlie penguins.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for children and adults alike.......2005-03-20
Sophie has written a brilliant book for children and adults to learn about the amazing Adelie Penguins of Antarctica. Her illustrations and story are very well done and it will start a long love affair with the southern continent for you and your child, encouraging you to learn more about the Antarctic.
Sophie's well illustrated penguin expedition.......2000-11-29
Sophie Webb has applied her wonderful drawings to a travel log of her trip to the Cape Royds penguin colony on Ross Island, Antactica. Her drawings of the penguins in all their various activities are wonderfully accurate and delightful. She also recounts her experiences traveling to Antactica in a way that makes it very real -- I should know, I was there with her! The book is very well suited to kids as well as adults. However, note that she is quite truthful about some of the various fates that can await less fortunate penguins! Sophie has done a great job with this book.

A pleasant surprise.......2001-07-16
I read this book back in 1990, and I was quite surprised by it. I thought it was going to be a bland story about a guy raising birds, but it turned out to be a story about an air force officer trying to find himself. ... It is definately worth a read
