Book Description
Situated between Western Europe and the civilizations of Byzantium and the Islamic world, Renaissance Venice was uniquely positioned at the crossroads of East and West. In the beautiful Adriatic city, ideas and aesthetics were exchanged and developed in a remarkable age of cultural fusion. Venice’s distinctive architecture is already well known for integrating divergent cultural influences, but the impact of this synthesis on Venetian painting has not been fully explored. This gorgeous book focuses on the work of the remarkable Bellini family of painters—Jacopo and his sons Gentile and Giovanni—who transformed Venetian painting in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
The authors examine the influence of Venetian trade with the East on Bellini paintings; the Byzantine influence on Venetian art; the impact of a visit to Mehmed II’s court in 1479 on Gentile Bellini, as well as his effect on Eastern-trained artists there; and much more. The book is abundantly illustrated with the Bellini family’s paintings and examples of the Eastern objects that inspired them.

Book Description
Anyone involved in the world of painting, whether amateur or professional, is faced with the problem of authenticity and in times like ours, in which the prices of works of art have risen to dizzying heights, it is tempting to try to pass off fakes, which is not to say that such practice is anything new. R.H. Marinjnissen, long associated with the famous Institut royal du Patrimoine artistique/Koninklijk Institut voor het Kuntstpartrimonium in Brussels, provides both the layman and the expert with an exhaustive series of criteria by which a judgment about a painting can be made. His observations are confined to the painting of the Low Countries, with which he is thoroughly conversant.

Book Description
The sparkling memoir of a movie icon's life in the footlights and on camera, The Good, the Bad, and Me tells the extraordinary story of Eli Wallach's many years dedicated to his craft. Beginning with his early days in Brooklyn and his college years in Texas, where he dreamed of becoming an actor, this book follows his career as one of the earliest members of the famed Actors Studio and as a Tony Award winner for his work on Broadway. Wallach has worked with such stars as Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, and Henry Fonda, and his many movies include The Magnificent Seven, How the West Was Won, the iconic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and, most recently, Mystic River. For more than fifty years Eli Wallach has held a special place in film and theater, and in a tale rich with anecdotes, wit, and remarkable insight he recounts his magical life in a world unlike any other.
Customer Reviews:
Strong Marriage, Strong Career.......2007-06-01
Eli Wallach had a dream, and with his wife's help, he has achieved it. I listened to Wallach speak about his book earlier in May, and his efferevescent personality and humor made me glad I did. He and his wife make quite a team, and she helped him remember details as he spoke.
His book, too, is warm and pleasing. He and his wife worked well together in drama and movies, even when projects forced them to be apart. Somehow, they stayed together when other Hollywood marriages collapsed.
His stories about Marilyn Monroe, the Method Acting Classes, Elia Kazan and Laurence Olivier were new to me and enchanting. His range from portraying Asians, cowboys and tough gangsters was well explained and fascinating.
I'm so happy I saw him in person and read his book. Thanks for everything, Eli.
by Larry Rochelle, author of BLUE ICE, GULF GHOST and TEN MILE CREEK.
Thank you Mr. Wallach.......2007-03-06
I appreciate autobiographies like Eli Wallach's The Good, The Bad, and Me: In My Anecdotage because too often there is little attention given to the perspective of a character actor. As opposed to his contemporaries, some of whom Wallach new intimately; Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, George C. Scott, Steve McQueen, Montgomery Clift, Paul Newman, Tennessee Williams and Elia Kazan many books, authorized and not have been scribbled about them. As far as I could research no one had taken an interest in writing about Wallach. His story is certainly impressive, and not only for his success as an actor-for over 50 years now! But his experience in the military in WWII, his membership early in the Actors' Studio (has was on Inside the Actors' Studio? in it's 3rd season), his according success on Broadway and perhaps most notably, his relationship and marriage to Anne Jackson.
As one of the original "method" actors his experience and resume are valuable to read, for film, theatre and especially acting lovers. 90 year old character actors don't usually put out biographies. And it is also important to note that his success as an actor, on film, TV and the stage was achieved as a father and husband. To me that is as admirable as anything.
His writing and attitude clarify his success too. His fondnesses and compassion, appreciations and praise are fullsome here. It is little wonder why he has worked for so long, and is still going.
It is wise to note the sub-title In My Anecdotage, as Wallach, while staying mostly chronological, highlights certain markers in his career. Usually these are congruous with what he is know for: Baby Doll; The Magnificent Seven; The Misfits and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The details of these films are fun to read, i.e, the controversial Baby Doll seduction scene's off-screen realities, Yul Brunner and McQueen's competetiveness during Seven, etc. Of course, the pecularities and idiosyncracies of The Misfits is detailed, making for an excellent chapter on being in the middle of a production storm amidst Monroe, Clift and Clark Gable-a man whom Wallach holds very dear...
Some other goods are that Wallach was offered the role of Maggio in From Here to Eternity, but declined it to do Tennessee Williams' Camino Real. Ever after Sinatra would have a limo pick Jackson and Wallach up to bring them to shows in NY. The bridge explosion from The Good, The Bad was actually the second bridge, how his hat from Seven originated, who once baby sat his children, etc.
As of this review Mr. Wallach has another film coming out in with Diane Keaton later in 2007. An amazing career for a true first class (character) actor.
As I said earlier, I appreciate the perspective of actors like Eli Wallach. Likewise I'd love to read about actors like: Lee J. Cobb, Warren Oates, Thelma Ritter, Christopher Plummer, Donald Sutherland, Peter Boyle, John Cazale, J.T. Walsh, etc. etc. Long (save Cazale) and impressive careers, experience with some of the greatest directors, actors and films ever, but very little is known....
Eli Wallach...a mensch in any language.......2006-07-02
Eli Wallach grew up in my old neighborhood in Brooklyn several decades before my birth. Too bad...I wish I had known him...I wish I'm able to make his acquaintance, now. (I guess in a remote sense I have, by reading his book.) He's a kind of guy I always felt comfortable palling around with..and, a great raconteur, as well. The book's genre is kinda like sitting in a candy store booth over an egg cream or a lime rickey listening to the events of a lifetime spun by an old friend who's "been there". Eli's narrative is chock full of wonderful moments, colorful people, and insightful observations of a long and memorable life..and career. The book leaves you hankering for more...but, alas, it's getting dark and your mother is calling you home for supper.
His long and loving marriage to the talented Ms.Jackson is not only indicative of the kind of person he is...but what you can expect in his book (it ain't Hollywood Babylon). It's a "feelgood" book in all respects. I couldn't put down--and neither will you. I wish Mr. Wallach and his family many more years of Mazel and thank him for sharing.
Really good book I agree.......2006-05-21
But I would like to clarify to the readers a couple of things. One Eli wonders why army seargents are always so angry. Well, their stern attitudes are to keep their soldiers in check afterall their soldiers must not have cocky or lax attitudes when it comes to handling guns or tanks or someother powerful and being stern and angry is a way of getting the men to listen up and not disobey.
As for method acting (Eli's brand). Well, it was begun by Stanislavski in Russia in the early 1900's and despite undeniably helping some turn in good performances it has far too many downsides. Method actress Jo Van Fleet (whose in Eli's book) asked Kirk Douglas to really hit her for a scene in a movie so her reactions would be honest. No good! Method actors need to psych themselves up a lot before playing a role and find the character's motivation and if the method actor has little time between being told they got the role and doing the role they may not have enough time to either psych or motivate up for the role. Clearly not every actor can be a Stanislavski method one!
A Class Act Tells A Fascinating Story--His Own.......2005-08-02
How did a Brooklyn-born Jew who grew up in an Italian-American neighborhood wind up getting famous for playing Mexican outlaws in some of the greatest westerns ever made? What was it like working with Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe (both in their last pictures before death) and John Houston? How does a "method"-trained theater actor deal with the commercialism and quicker pace of filmmaking--especially down-and-dirty spaghetti western filmmaking? You'll learn the answers to these and more questions in this wonderfully entertaining, insightful, and charming memoir by one of America's finest actors--still alive, well, and working in his nineties!
The story is a love story, too--both of Wallach's love of the craft of acting and his love of his wife, Anne Jackson, and family. In a life that takes twists, turns, and zig-zags all over the creative and cartographic map of the world of stage and screen, you travel effortlessly through the pages with your "host" and get to know him well. Whether you're a fan of Mr. Wallach's great performances or merely a movie buff who wants to know "the way it was" in the golden age or a theater fan looking for Broadway anecdotage, you'll be satisfied with this perfect autobiography--and if you're an actor or know one seeking to "break in" to the business, this book should provide lots of inspiration and hope, too.
There are many showbiz memoirs in print--I've never read one with as much content for BOTH "fans" and professionals as this one. Buy it, enjoy it, and buy it for a friend or two, too.

The first of an exciting new line of D&D poster map products!
Fantastic Locations: Fane of the Drow features two double-sided poster maps designed for roleplaying and miniatures skirmish play. An accompanying 16-page adventure can be dropped into any campaign. Enemies consist of creatures from various
D&D miniatures. Miniatures skirmish scenarios are included for additional play options, written to allow Dungeon Masters to seamlessly integrate
D&D Miniatures into the adventure. The two poster maps, which are scaled for tabletop play, can be put together to form the temple of the drow, while the reverse sides feature other fantastic dungeon locations players can explore.
Customer Reviews:
Great for miniature battles........2007-04-01
The maps included work great with miniatures and classic D&D game scenarios. The module that comes with the maps is not that great, is a fair adventure scenario for new players. First: The enemies are just that... enemies, no twists or interesting plot that might hook the players more than killing guys. Second: It doesn't motivate the players or Dungeonmaster to work on the characters. It's just Hack and Slash. But the maps are GREAT! Two of them are favorites among my players.
another drow encounter..........2007-01-11
buy it with an open mind, good for beginners. advanced players can skip this...

Customer Reviews:
Good Pictures, but...........2001-11-17
I have purchased this calandar and really like it. There are pictures of each of the ten "regular" cast members (including both Jadzia and Ezri Dax) and the two primary "recurring" characters of Garak and Dukat. These pictures make up the tweleve months of the year. And in the center of the calandar, there is a picture of the Defiant in battle.
The cast pictures are very nice, with the possible exception of Julian Bashir - I think they could have found a better picture of him. With each picture is a quote from that character, and I think they picked pretty good quotes. Additionally, the Defiant picture is nice as well.
I'm not particularly crazy about the boxy look of the date boxes on the calandar...but I do like the fact that they put a notation on each DS9 cast members' birthday...kind of a nice touch.
I think the calandar is worth the money...especially if you are a DS9 fan!!
Very Nice.......2001-08-27
This DS9 calendar is actually very nice. The selection of photos is very good and there are some superb photos in the bunch. There's just a couple of little things that bother me. First, the colorful borders. I agree with other reviewers that the borders are rather...loud. Sometimes the color clashes with the colors in the photo. *But*... they do serve to draw your eye to the photo, all right. You can't miss it. Second, the photos are a bit small. If they had done the photos bigger and the border smaller, the bright colors would have been more tolerable. Lastly, I wasn't impressed with the print quality. On the photo of Kira, there are faint greenish streaks on her uniform, like their printer was running out of ink. Maybe it's just my copy, and fortunately it's barely noticeable. But, despite its shortcomings, this calendar has great photos and deserves 5 stars - and each photo is still going up on my wall as a poster. Pick this calendar up if you can!
Designed for the Aesthetic Sensibility of a Vorta.......2000-10-20
I bought the 2001 calendar sight unseen because I liked the 2000 Deep Space Nine calendar. I wish I had taken a look at it in a bookstore first!
On the plus side, the blocks for the individual days are larger and thus it will be easier to write notes in them.
Unfortunately, any pluses are greatly outweighed by one major negative: the obtrusive backgrounds. The muted gray-blue-black background theme of 2000 is replaced with garish colors which vary from page to page and which frequently clash with the colors in the photos. Additionally, the photo size was diminished this year, which renders the background even more annoying. There are some nice shots, but background colors and diminished size detract severely from all of them.
All in all, I recommend you preview before you purchase. It's a serviceable calendar, but not as pleasing to look at as last year's was.
Da**it Jim! It's a Trek Calendar, not a Pokemon Poster!.......2000-10-11
As a general rule, I love Star Trek calendars. And of all things Trek, I love DS9 the most. But I honestly hate this calendar. I can't even say whether or not I will put it up. I want my money back.
To be fair, the photography is nice and professionally done. This is Paramount, after all. But the photos are smaller than I expected. Why not blow them up a little more? It would be an improvement. I feel like putting the calendar on a firing range and blowing it up in real life too. I would be an improvement.
I have always seen Deep Space Nine as the most serious series of the Trek world. It is a fairly somber, almost dark series, or at least when compared with the saccharin sweet Federation goodness and wholesomeness of The Next Generation. (This calendar ranks up there with the annnoying Vik "Feel so good about yourself" Fontaine episodes of the last season which made my skin crawl!) So, what I think bothers me most about this hideous creation is the graphic design and color scheme. But, it's a calendar, after all... so what else does one rate it on?
The colors in this calendar, and the graphic design, are bright and cheery, for goodness sake! I cannot imagine what kind of drugs the artists were on when they decided to put Damar and Kira -- in a potentially tense moment -- against a sea-foam colored background! And Worf looks equally silly against his teal blue background. Tell me, who uses thick orange, fushia, yellow, and lime green borders for a Star Trek calendar? Why is Garak a happy boy, smiling gleefully, hands clapping, like an idiot? Tain would be mortified... At least the Klingons are set against blood red, and Odo's shot is nicely set against a stunning comm panel. But overall, it looks like a 5th grader put the thing together... or that it was designed for a 5th grader's bedroom.
Whatever drug that was, oh ever-confused and befuddled graphic production staff, I would like to try some myself!
Beautiful.......2000-07-10
This is a Calender, not a book. But the pictures in the calender are very beautiful. This Calender is from the Tv Show: Star Trek Deep Space Nine, which ended in 1999. However, the show still lives on through memories, and through this calender. The dates are setup easily, and it's not hard to navigate. I'd reccomend it for any Star Trek DS9 fan, or anyone who wants to buy it for one!
Book Description
Covering all Pacific islands involved in World War II military operations, this book is a detailed, single source of information on virtually every geo-military aspect of the Pacific Theater. Arranged regionally and, to the extent possible, chronologically according to when islands entered the war, entries provide complete background information. Along with island names, nicknames, Allied code names, location, and wartime time zones, the entries include such topics as the island's physical characteristics, weather, health hazards, historical background, native population, natural resources, and military value. Japanese and Allied strategies and operations, military problems caused by terrain, military installations, Japanese units and key commanders, Allied units and key commanders, and brief battle descriptions are also covered along with the island's postwar status. A valuable resource for researchers, historians, military history enthusiasts, and war gamers, the book provides complete background information on the geo-military aspects of the Pacific Ocean region, its islands, and the roles they played in the war. 108 maps provide specific information. Until now, geo-military information could only be found by searching four to ten publications on each island.
Customer Reviews:
Simply Excellent!.......2005-02-21
World War II Pacific Island Guide: A Geo-Military Study is a detailed survey of the Pacific islands which served as battlegrounds during the war. The author, Gordon L. Rottman, a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant and Vietnam veteran, served with elite units, such as the Airborne, Rangers, and Special Forces. Rottman is also the author of more than two dozen other books, including most recently: U.S. Marine Corps World War II Order of Battle: Ground and Air Units in the Pacific War, 1939-1945 (Greenwood Press, 2001) and Korean War Order of Battle: United States, United Nations, and Communist Ground, Naval, and Air Forces, 1950-1953 (Praeger Press, 2002).
The 477 pages of the World War II Pacific Island Guide are divided into three parts. In Part I, "Geo-Military Aspects of the Pacific Theater", Rottman briefly discusses the Pacific Ocean, physical categories of islands, health hazards, island populations and political dynamics, distances and dimensions, times and dates, military organization, and military ranks. In Part II, he provides a chronology of World War II in the Pacific. In Part III, which occupies the vast majority of the book, Rottman discusses (in detail) the islands themselves and the battles fought on or near them. This last portion of the book is itself divided into six sections - Central and Southern Pacific U.S. Possessions, South Pacific Area, Southwest Pacific Area, Central Pacific Area, Western Pacific, and North Pacific Area.
I can think of absolutely nothing that has been omitted from the World War II Pacific Island Guide and the only criticism that I can make regarding this superb volume is its prohibitive cost. I certainly do not blame the author and I realize that this is a specialty book, but $104.95 is an utterly ridiculous price. Unfortunately, the price will probably prevent many people from purchasing this volume, which is regrettable, because I believe that it should be on the shelf of anyone seriously interested in the Pacific Theater during World War II. I highly recommend this book and I am convinced that it will be a generation or two (if ever) before it is supplanted.
Excellent Work of Military Geography.......2002-01-18
This is a superb work of research and a must have for those interested in the WWII Pacific Campaign and military geography. This is indeed one of the best works of military geography that I have seen in many years. Rottman's book provides a detailed summary of each island in the pacific that was either fought over or used as a military base. Along with a geographical and historical background of the islands are summaries of the battles and/or operations that took place on each one. This book is a perfect compliment to Rottman's recent WWII USMC OB book.
Product Description
Promoting the rule of law abroad has become a major part of Western efforts to spread democracy and market economies around the world. Yet, although programs to foster the rule of law abroad have mushroomed, well-grounded knowledge about what factors ensure success, and why, remains scarce. In Promoting the Rule of Law Abroad, leading practitioners and policy-oriented scholars draw on years of experience to critically assess the rationale, methods, and goals of the rule-of-law policies and programs. These incisive, accessible essays offer vivid portrayals and penetrating analyses of the challenges that define this vital but often misunderstood field. Contributors: Rachel Kleinfeld (Truman National Security Project), Lisa Bhansali (World Bank), Christina Biebesheimer (World Bank), Wade Channell (independent consultant), Stephen Golub (University of California, Berkeley), David Mednicoff (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Laure-Helene Piron (Overseas Development Institute, London), Frank Upham (NYU School of Law), Matthew Spence (Truman National Security Project), and Matthew Stephenson (Harvard Law School).
Customer Reviews:
Much recommended.......2007-01-09
The Rule of Law has become more and more important in international relations over the past years, with vast sums of money spent on the training of judges, the building of courts, institutions of transitional justice and the drafting of legislation. This book is the best overview of these efforts and the rationale that underlies them that I've come across. It is based on extensive research by someone with long-term experience in the field, well-written and clearly argued. Much recommended!
