            Book Description

When it appeared in France in 1955, A Panorama of American Film Noir was the first book ever on the genre. Now this classic is at last available in English translation. This clairvoyant study of Hollywood film noir is "a 'benchmark' for all later work on the topic" (James Naremore). A Panorama of American Film Noir addresses the essential amorality of its subject from a decidedly Surrealist angle, focusing on noir's dreamlike, unwonted, erotic, ambivalent, and cruel atmosphere, and setting it in the social context of mid-century America.

Raymond Borde (b. 1920), founder of the Cinematheque de Toulouse, has written extensively on film history.

Etienne Chaumeton was the film critic of the Toulouse newspaper La Depeche until his recent death.

5 out of 5 stars The Book That Gave Birth to Film Noir Theory........2004-11-20

In 1946, French critic Nino Frank gave the cynical, existential, expressionist, and often erotic crime thrillers that Hollywood had been producing since around 1940 a name. He called them "film noir", after "série noire", the French expression used to describe crime and detective novels. In 1955, Raymond Borde and Etienne Chaumeton, film scholars from Toulouse, France, gave "film noir" an identity. They published "A Panorama of American Film Noir", which became the basis of all film noir theory that followed. This 2002 edition is the first time the book has been published in its entirety in English.

Noir theorist James Naremore has written a valuable new introduction to the book, in which is explains the reception that American film noir received in France in the post-war era, the Surrealist environment from which noir film theory emerged, and why "A Panorama of American Film Noir" was so influential.

"A Panorama of American Film Noir", attempts to define "film noir", identify its sources and influences, and to document its rise and fall. The first three chapters focus on definitions and sources, from the obvious hard-boiled crime novels to the events of WWII. "The War Years and the Formation of a Style" follows the genesis of film noir from 1941-1945. "The Glory Days" explores the apogee of film noir, when films such as "Gilda", "The Big Sleep", "Sorry, Wrong Number", and a trio from Alfred Hitchcock exemplified a fully developed style, 1946-1948. "Decadence and Transformation" traces noir's shift toward realism and location shoots in the period 1949-1950. And "The Demise of a Series" discusses some of the last true film noirs of the classic era, 1951-1953, as Hollywood moved toward escapism. Two chapters, "Influences" and "French Film Noir" discuss the role of psychoanalysis and crime films in film noir, as well as noir's influence on the cinematic traditions of Italy, France, and England. In the book's final chapter, "A Balance Sheet", the authors summarize the characteristics of film noir, its sources, history, and repercussions. They also explain "A Panorama of Film Noir"'s purpose, limitations, and methodology with impressive foresight. The authors added a Postface in 1979.

In the back of the book, you will find a chronology of major film noirs 1941-1954 and an alphabetical filmography that includes titles from the 1955 original publication plus those referred to in the 1979 postface. There is an index of films, books, periodicals, names and various related works of art.

The prose of "A Panorama of American Film Noir" can be awkward at times. Translator Paul Hammond has chosen, correctly, to convey the meaning of the French as closely as possible, if it means sacrificing fluidity. "Influences" and " French Film Noir" are particularly disjointed. This treatise was written for academics, not the average movie-goer, and employed a new vocabulary at the time, so I don't suppose one can expect it to be eloquent. "A Panorama of American Film Noir" is noir theory's seminal work and an insightful and essential read for film noir enthusiasts.

4 out of 5 stars The Pantheon of Noir.......2003-06-30

After all the controversy over the constitution of film noir, it can only be edifying to read the perspective of classic-period French critics. Indeed, it was Gallic mentality that first recognized and recorded the phenomenon, and--if these writers are representative of their ethnic mainstrem--surmised that noir was born of an infusion of angst into the cinematic puritanism of the Anglo nations. While American scholars have often seen noir as a reaction to good times (as comedy is a reaction to bad), the authors site only the related relevance of World War II in its capacity to desensitize audiences to stark screen violence. Furthermore, they label only a handful of films as true noir and assess many other features--such as police and psychological dramas--as merely possessing qualities of noir. The book discusses a myriad of these movies in a colorful but easily comprehended style that avoids becoming parched with pedogogic discourse. A lengthy, up-to-1979 filmography, which also includes non-American films, has been added to the text--and is of particular interest in listing features not commonly called noir, such as cartoons and sci-fi thrillers. (I always knew Soylent Green was black!) Digression aside--for those with amour de noir, this book is de rigueur!

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant critique of classic movies.......2003-04-08

Succinctly translated into English by Paul Hammond, A Panorama of American Film Noir 1941-1953 is a remarkable and collaborative work by Raymond Borde and Etienne Chaumeton which was originally published in France in 1955. A Panorama Of American Film Noir offers unique insights into the dark surrealism and ambivalent atmosphere of Hollywood's film noir glory days. A brilliant critique of classic movies and the American culture that created them; as well as a film noir chronology and filmography enhance this masterful work which is strongly recommended for personal, professional, and academic Cinematic Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - The writings that defined a genre!.......2002-12-31

Though often neglected today, Borde and Chaumeton's seminal piece "A Panorama of American Film Noir" was the book that first identified film noir as a genre. This piece, which is nearly 50 years old, is a wonderful way to explore the genre of film noir from the perspective of an audience member who was experiencing the films when they were released - not in retrospect.

This edition offers a great introudction by Noir expert and author, James Naremore as well as a chronology, filmography, and film stills. "A Panorama of American Film Noir" is a classic piece of film history.

5 out of 5 stars Application of Literary Theory to Music.......2007-01-06

Esti Sheinberg uses a multi-disciplinary approach to present a theory for the recognition of musical language that implies irony, satire, parody, and grotesquerie. Her approach includes elements of literary theory and semiology rather than traditional music theory. One should have some familiarity with the Russian Formalist (literary theory) and a basic understanding of semiology prior to reading this book, however, any lacking should not deter you from delving in. Knowledge of traditional music theory is not very important to understand this book, but one should be familiar with the elements of music and musical topics (especially waltzes and marches!)

In each section, Sheinberg uses literary theories to define each type of rhetoric (irony, satire, etc.) Since the subject is Shostakovich's music, the Russian Formalist ideas of these terms are examined. Examples are given in literature and (visual) art before looking at music. Sheinberg then lists the musical elements that point towards ironic/satirical/etc. meaning and provides examples of each. The musical examples are not limited to Shostakovich, demonstrating that Sheinberg's theories can be applied to the hermeneutical analysis of any music.

The theory itself is based on "incongruities," that is, musical elements that are somehow out of place. For example, a waltz played too fast or with a heavy bass, or excessive repetitons of simple patterns. When these types of things are recognized by the listener, the meaning of the original musical topic becomes altered, whether it be for any of the purposes in the title.

With regards to Shostakovich, most of the music the book is concerned with appears in his two operas, and some is in his instrumental music. Though there are some limits to the discussion in terms of volume of material examined, one could go on an apply the theory presented to more. A second weakness is that Sheinberg quotes from "Testimony" frequently, seemingly accepting it as true regardless of its questionable authenticity. To her credit, she does this in a different manner than the "Revisionist Camp" (e.g. MacDonald, Ho, Wilson) who seem to want to impoverish the value of Shostakovich's music by ascribing one purport (anti-Stalin/fascism art). This is clear when she writes: "I believe that Shostakovich is saying much more than that." (See page 318.)

I recommend this book to anyone interested in musical meaning. It is well worth reading!

Acclaimed historian and biographer Douglas Brinkley, the New York Times bestselling author of Tour of Duty and The Boys of Pointe du Hoc, returns with an in–depth biography of Father Michael J. McGivney, the Roman Catholic priest who stood up to anti–Papal prejudice in America and founded The Knights of Columbus.

"Father McGivney's vision remains as relevant as ever in the changed circumstances of today's Church and society."

                ––Pope John Paul II

Just about every day Catholic laymen bound in a common association gather to advance the welfare of their communities. They meet in harbor towns of Nova Scotia, suburban New Jersey, Mexican cities and Philippine villages. Some will help families pay off medical bills or secure aid for disaster victims. Others will help finance Catholic schools or independent living for people with disabilities.

They are the Knights of Columbus, the legacy of Father Michael J. McGivney. Since Father McGivney's cause for canonization began in 1997, the spreading of his story has increased. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. has added a stained–glass widow depicting his image.

Father McGivney dedicated his life to the spiritual and physical welfare of others, creating the Knights of Columbus to provide insurance for the protection of widows and orphans. Today, a growing number of schools, medical centres and social service agencies named for him associate their work with his charisma, and the Knights of Columbus insures the lives of more than 1.2 million men, women and children.

                "

""Father McGivney's vision remains as relevant as ever in the changed circumstances of today's church and society."" -- Pope John Paul II

Is now the time for an American parish priest to be declared a Catholic saint?

In Father Michael McGivney (1852-1890), born and raised in a Connecticut factory town, the modern era's ideal of the priesthood hit its zenith. The son of Irish immigrants, he was a man to whom ""family values"" represented more than mere rhetoric. And he left a legacy of hope still celebrated around the world.

In the late 1800s, discrimination against American Catholics was widespread. Many Catholics struggled to find work and ended up in infernolike mills. An injury or the death of the wage earner would leave a family penniless. The grim threat of chronic homelessness and even starvation could fast become realities. Called to action in 1882 by his sympathy for these suffering people, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, an organization that has helped to save countless families from the indignity of destitution. From its uncertain beginnings, when Father McGivney was the only person willing to work toward its success, it has grown to an international membership of 1.7 million men.

At heart, though, Father McGivney was never anything more than an American parish priest, and nothing less than that, either -- beloved by children, trusted by young adults, and regarded as a ""positive saint"" by the elderly in his New Haven parish.

In an incredible work of academic research, Douglas Brinkley (The Boys of Pointe Du Hoc, Tour of Duty) and Julie M. Fenster (Race of the Century, Ether Day) re-create the life of Father McGivney, a fiercely dynamic yet tenderhearted man. Though he was only thirty-eight when he died, Father McGivney has never been forgotten. He remains a true ""people's priest,"" a genuinely holy man -- and perhaps the most beloved parish priest in U.S. history. Moving and inspirational, Parish Priest chronicles the process of canonization that may well make Father McGivney the first American-born parish priest to be declared a saint by the Vatican.

Today in the US 62 Million people, nearly 1 in 4, identifies themselves as Catholic. Our ancestors, particularly Irish Catholics, who arrived or were born in America in the years following the Civil War were treated as poorly as recently freed slaves or Chinese immigrants of the time. For the many of us who have forgotten this, "Parish Priest" serves as much needed reminder of our roots.

The authors help us see the wretched conditions of 19th Century industrial America through young Michael McGivney's eyes as well as through Rev. McGivney's eyes and ministry. By understanding the times as he did it is easy to see how the lay order he began, the Knights of Columbus, filled an important need for the Catholics of his time. And the basis of the Order - charity, fraternity, unity - has stood the test of time as evidenced by the Knights of Columbus today, with over 1.7 Million members around the world.

For those who want to understand the heroic virtue that makes Father McGivney a Servant of God this is a must read. Thank you Brinkly & Fenster.

Good book. I recomend this book to any Catholic who wants to know more about the catholic faith in the 1800's

                5 out of 5 stars wow..........2007-03-21

This is a great little book, and a quick read. However, it is packed full of historical facts and interesting people.

What is most authentic about the book in my opinion is the depiction of Catholic life in Waterbury and New Haven at the turn of the last century. While times have certainly changed in 100 years, they haven't changed all that much. I spent quite a bit of time in Waterbury growing up, and I could almost feel the environment Fr. McGiveny grew up in. As I read, I became nostalgic.

I am a Knight, and the story of how the Knights began is personal and inspiring for me. I hope many read the book and consider joining the Knights. If non-Catholics read the book, I hope they consider joining other civic organizations. As Dr. Robert Putnam of Harvard University has pointed out in his excellent book "Bowling Alone," (which mentions the Knights and has a chart on Knights membership rates) social capital in this country has been in steep decline for the past 50 years. We must reinvigorate our great civic organizations to reclaim this source of social capital. Many folks who graduate college today and get jobs experience profound loneliness once they move away from the academic setting. This loneliness that characterizes modern life was not the norm 50 years ago or more. We are suffering and leading poorer lives because of a lack of social capital.

Fr. Michael McGivney was "just" a parish priest. However, he saw the need men had to connect with each other and spend time with each other. He saw that young Catholic men were being lured away by secret societies that at times sought to remove them from the Church. He saw that Catholic men seeking to make their way in a new and often hostile country needed a way to build social capital AND keep the faith, for if they lost the faith, the consequences were eternal. He provided all of this, even while he transformed the lives of millions of Catholic families, giving them access to Life Insurance and other benefits for the first time. Today, he is known as the man who founded what became one of the wealthiest civic organizations the world has ever seen. The Knights give millions away every year to charity and have billions in assets. They are, by all accounts, the largest private and religious charitable organization in the entire world.

Ultimately though, all this is not the best reason to buy the book and read it. At its core, this is just a biography of one good man who became one good and holy priest. At times like ours we are in need of reminders of what good and holy priests look like, act like, and achieve. Thank God the authors gave us such a portrait at such an important time.

5 out of 5 stars A STRUGGLE OF THE TIMES.......2007-02-24

I found the book gave an excellent account of life in the late 19th century. It left me with a feeling of what it would be like to lack insurance and reasonable health care, something that is widespred today. The lack of good health care coupled with the struggle of Father McGinvey to serve his community, made it clear his challenges were great. It was very interesting to see how he established the Knights of Columbus and worked at preserving family life.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Catholics.......2007-02-24

Brinkley and Fenster have written a must read for every Catholic. This biography depicts the struggles of Catholic Americans and immigrants in the 19th century. Fr. McGivney was a man of faith with a mission. He saw the discrimination and bigotry and created a faith-based organization to overcome them and their families. McGivney's short life (38 years) was filled with challenges. Through his vision the Knights of Columbus was formed. It is a legacy that will surely carry him to sainthood. As we face the current attacks on the Catholic Church, we must look to Fr. McGivney for guidance. His faith was strengthened by his trials and tribulations, so must our own faith be fortified by the frequent barrage of negativity we encounter today.

                  Book Description

                            Book Description

The Barbary Corsairs first appeared to terrorize shipping in the 16th century. These Muslim pirates sailed out of the ports of North Africa and, acting as officers of the sprawling Ottoman Empire, plundered the trading routes of the Mediterranean and sowed horror in the hearts of Christians everywhere. The most famous and powerful were the Barbarossa brothers, sons of a renegade Christian. The true founders of the Algiers regency, they initially preyed on fishing vessels or defenseless merchantmen before growing bolder and embarking upon more brazen expeditions - attacking fortified ports and cities; raiding and kidnapping inhabitants of the African coast; and hunting ships from the Christian nations. In this newly translated book, Jacques Heers follows the extraordinary exploits of the brothers, and those of other corsairs and profiteers, set against the turbulent backdrop of trade, commerce and conflict throughout the Mediterranean during the 14th - 16th centuries. It's an enthralling adventure, robustly written, and it brings to life an age when travel and trade were perilous enterprises.

2 out of 5 stars Poor read, poor research........2006-04-28

While there are many problems with this book, probably the biggest problem of all results from simple academic lethargy. While the author makes extensive use of Western European source, there are NO original Turkish sources used or cited! How can this be? This lack of original sources impacts the book by making it essentially a 'history' of European reaction to the activities of the corsairs, and not really about the corsairs at all. Most of the references and descriptions regarding the the city of Algiers and the other corsair bases are often irrelevant to the issue at hand, especially if that issue is the corsairs themselves, because the corsairs by all accounts constituted very much a separate entity unto themselves. Further, while the period discussed, 1480-1580 certainly involved significant activity, the corsairs were very active right up until the early 19th century, managing to get into active conflict with virtually every major European power, and the Americans as well. In fact, the period covered really doesn't deal with the corsairs as such, but with the activities of the Turkish Navy under orders from the Sultan. Only after the period discussed (post-Barbarossa brothers) do the corsairs begin seriously independent activity. In addition, although this purports to be a book about corsairs, virtually nothing is mentioned about their ships (galleys, xebecs, galliots, and a wide variety of other Mediterranean craft), their advantages, liabilities and uses. What makes this particularly egregious is the fact that there are some excellent sources for this kind of information from several modern French authors (Jean Boudriot comes to mind). As these craft are generally unknown outside of the Mediterranean area, it would be most beneficial for something to be said on this topic. Finally, the conclusions the author comes to vis a' vis the corsairs in comparison with the well-known pirates and privateers of the Caribbean are ludicrous at best! Caribbean pirates were often well-organised and formed fleets for large-scale land operations, just as did the corsairs. A quick look at the sacking of Panama, Cartegena, Maracaibo, Vera Cruz, Bahia, Santiago, Campeche, Portobelo, and many others, and all by large numbers of pirate ships operating in concert should indicate that these were not the actions of a few isolated sociopaths. And certainly there were a number of New World cities based on piracy as a major part of the economy, as well as semi-official collusion with European governments too. In any case, it appears that the definitive work on the subject of the Barbary Corsairs has yet to be written, and will apparently continue to be missing until someone bright spark decides to learn Turkish and go through the extensive records found in Istanbul.

3 out of 5 stars dry read about interesting period.......2004-11-21

I found this book to be a decent, but rather dry, read about an interesting period. The first thing to note is that this book only covers the period 1480-1580, so those interested in, for instance, the US dealings with the Barbary States in the 18th Century should look elsewhere.

While this book provides decent coverage of the historical events and personages in the relevant period and of the complex relationship between Christian and Muslim of this period, the book suffers from its organization: the first few chapters essentially run through a rather dry history of the period (X did so and so in year Y, etc.) with later chapters dedicated to overall topics such as "The Africa of the Corsairs", "Slavery", and "War and Propaganda." While the material in these final chapters is pretty interesting, the book as a whole would have been much more engrossing if the materials in these chapters would have been woven into the hisorical account instead of simply lumped into seperate chapters.

1 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes........2004-05-31

It is difficult to find in one book, apparently well written, so many crucial historical mistakes.
Just a few examples. The galleys denoted as belonging to Savona, then a small port of no consequence, were actually of the duke of Savoy.
During the war of Cyprus the Turks that landed in the island were at least 100.000 and not 2.000; Nicosia was lost to the Venetian in 1570 and the long siege that lasted until August 1571 was against Famagusta, defended by Marcantonio Bragadin, Astorre Baglioni and Luigi Martinengo.
In that period Sebastiano Venier was Provveditore of the island of Corfù and so he could not have been the commander of the Venetian fleet. Sebastiano Venier, in all his life, was never reluctant to attack, as it was clearly shown later in the battle of Lepanto.
As far as this battle is concerned Heers ignores that the victory, as acknowledged by Don Juan of Austria himself, was mainly due to the six Venetian galleasses.
Without any doubt Jaques Heers is an excellent professor of Medioeval History: not so, at least reading this book, of Modern History.

5 out of 5 stars Stomp your own snakes!.......2005-07-01

I read this book back in 1992 and met Paxton Quigley in Phoenix shortly afterwards. I obtained several autographed copies and gave them to my sisters and sisters-in-law. I collect books on "defense for women" and most of them are trash. It's a shame, too. I started collecting books on defensive techniques for women because if they worked for the physically and mentally soft, it would be even more effective for those who were physically and mentally conditioned to deal with the violent, ugly, and brutal parts of "civilization." Paxton Quigley's advice on bottom-line security is still first rate.

Women have to learn to stomp their own snakes for two reasons: criminals select helpless targets as victims; all too often, the woman's "significant other" turns out to be an abusive brute.

Even if you do not want anything to do with guns, taking a gun safety course and learning their limitations will still give you the information to make yourself safer. Someone waving a pistol at you from 100 feet away is usually not going to be able to hit you except by accident--so run to a place of safety! On the other hand, if you're confronted at five feet, you need to pretend to cooperate until you have an opportunity to get away.

Quigley evaluates defensive tools available in 1990 and makes recommendations based upon her experience. I am a large man (6' 3") and Paxton Quigley had to stand on an ammo crate in order to see over the sales counter and sign her books. In her book, she writes of carrying a whippy little steak knife for self protection. Quigley's idea of self defense is avoiding injury--certainly a worthy goal. I hang out with America's warriors and their idea of self-defense is hurting the other guy worse. Quigley achieves her goal, avoiding injury, by being alert to danger. She uses her handgun as credible deterrance--I have no doubt that she can shut down a hostile male attacker. Quigley projects this attitude without coming off as a phoney or hard-case. Her book, "Armed and Female," tells you how to do the same.
