    Book Description

Creativity: Theory, History, Practice offers important new perspectives on creativity in the light of contemporary critical theory and cultural history. Innovative in approach as well as argument, the book crosses disciplinary boundaries and builds new bridges between the critical and the creative. It is organized in four parts:

    · Why creativity now? offers much-needed alternatives to both the Romantic stereotype of the creator as individual genius and the tendency of the modern creative industries to treat everything as a commodity.
    · Defining creativity, creating definitions traces the changing meaning of "create" from religious ideas of divine creation from nothing to advertising notions of concept creation. It also examines the complex history and extraordinary versatility of terms such as imagination, invention, inspiration and originality.
    · Creation as myth, story, metaphor begins with modern re-telling of early African, American and Australian creation myths and -picking up Biblical and evolutionary accounts along the way - works round to scientific visions of the Big Bang, bubble universes and cosmic soup.
    · Creative practices, cultural processes is a critical anthology of materials, chosen to promote fresh thinking about everything from changing constructions of "literature" and "design" to artificial intelligence and genetic engineering.
Rob Pope takes significant steps forward in the process of rethinking a vexed yet vital concept, all the while encouraging and equipping readers to continue the process in their own creative or "re-creative" ways. Creativity: Theory, History, Practice is invaluable for anyone with a live interest in exploring what creativity has been, is currently, and yet may be.

        Book Description

Set many years in the future from the award-winning ongoing series, Conan and the Demons and Khitai marks Conan's first appearance as King in Dark Horse's best-selling comics revival of the legendary fantasy hero. When King Conan receives an invitation from the Eastern kingdom of Khitai to open trade in precious jewels and spices, he decides that he will travel into this long-mysterious land. Yet to do so is perilous, as those who have requested his company may have far more devious intentions, and beasts unseen by Western eyes lurk amidst the shadows.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Good Adaptation.......2006-10-19

As the other review has stated, Dark Horse has done an excellant job with the Conan storys. They are more vibrant and real than the old Marvel comics. And I say that as a fan of the Marvel series, having grown up reading them. The Dark Horse version of Conan is just more "alive" and fresh. The only complain I have about The Demons of Khitai was that it was over way too soon.

3 out of 5 stars SOLID ART BUT A FLAT, ILLOGICAL PLOT.......2006-08-21

Dark Horse has done a truly magnificent job since acquiring the rights to do Conan comics. The reprint editions of the original Marvel comics with re-mastered art and commentary by Roy Thomas have been fabulous. The adaptations of the original Robert E. Howard stories have been dead on, and their original material has largely been brilliant. Unfortunately Conan and the Demons of Khitai is a bit of a step backwards. The book reprints the four issue mini-series written by Akira Yoshida with art by Paul Lee.

The basic premise has King Conan leaving on a diplomatic mission to Khitai, the Hyborian Age's amalgam of Japan and China, to establish trade with the strange kingdom of the far east. He does this after receiving an invitation from a mysterious Khitan priestess who gives Conan a map to follow and yet somehow never gives her name. Now, Conan may be a barbarian but he's not stupid. Khitai is just about the furthest kingdom from Aquilonia, a journey that would take months to complete. Conan leaves his kingdom with only a handful of guards on a trip that will take him through many hostile and enemy lands. By this time, Conan is no stranger in the world. He's well known...he's a king after all. The idea that he would leave his kingdom, where he still has many enemies seeking to get this barbarian usurper off the throne, on a journey that will take months, and accompanied by only a half-dozen or so guards, certainly qualifies as fool-hardy. Now, perhaps this is an older King Conan and he's left his son Conn in charge but judging from his appearance, this is a youthful King Conan and I would place this story before the events in "Hour of the Dragon" where Conan first encounters the slave girl Zenobia who he would make his queen.

Conan's guards are set upon by a terrible beast and killed except for Pallantides, the Captain of Conan's Black Dragon guard who is severely wounded. Conan and Pallantides are captured by a band samurai-like warriors and taken to their city. Their ruler does not believe Conan's story, believing him to be a thief who stole the map to an ancient temple that is haunted by a demon warrior named Shinzen who stole Khitai's greatest treasure, a sword called the Blade of Balance. Forcing a blood oath from Khitai's ruler, Conan, Pallantides and a pair of hand-picked guards will now head to the ancient temple for a showdown with the Demon Warrior Shinzen.

It's not a terrible story but Yoshida erred by setting this during the time when Conan was king. Logic simply doesn't dictate Conan going on this folly of a journey himself when he could have easily sent other diplomats to foster a mere trade agreement with Khitai.

The story is saved by the art of Paul Lee whose art provides a lush, painted look with the kind of bright colors and hues one would expect from an exotic setting like Khitai. He also depicts Conan quite well---Brawny yet lithe like a lion, and full of barbaric rage when threatened. He paces the action scenes quite well. I'll give the story a 2 and the art a four a final rating of three stars.

4 out of 5 stars "Popeye appears to have served as Pope or President...".......2007-06-28

This is perhaps the first book I have ever read where the introduction was better than the book as a whole.

The first nine pages are pure genius - an alien archaeologist unearths an ancient script from the 20th Century. His introduction is priceless.

The remainder of the book, the script itself, is creative but is really just a compendium of things RAW has said before in other books. Because of the conceit of the script he is working within, he usually says it better where it first appeared. Also, it is a product of its time - 1992 - and the timely nature of his political quips (Quayle) seem dated even now.

Discordians and Subgenii will definitely want to find this book, as both religions are repeatedly mentioned and illustrated.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry, But It Just Didn't Do It For Me.......2004-08-23

First of all, I've read some of RAW's other work and have enjoyed it immensely. So it was with enthusiasm that I purchased "Reality Is What You Can Get Away With," particularly after seeing the glowing Amazon.com reviews. However, I was disappointed with this book in general. Oh sure, it had humor in a kind of over the top sort of way (although I know that RAW strived for more than humor in the book). But I didn't find that it tremendously "expanded my reality." Maybe that's because I've been in the "human potential," and "freedom" movements for decades. So what RAW writes in "Reality" was not all that shocking, mindblowing or new to me. The book is actually written as a screenplay and perhaps would translate better into the video, rather than the written, medium.

One more thing: based on the reviews of RAW's work I had expected him to be as libertarian as you could find. But there is a passage in "Reality," where he tosses insults at the U.S. because, among other things, it doesn't have a "national health plan." How could anyone who has even the slightest knowledge of economics, society and reality in general really believe that establishing a "national health plan" would, rather than destroying a large part of any economy (as Medicare & Medicaid have already done), bring a slice of utopia into society?

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK RULES.......2004-08-22

I love this book... it is one of my favorite R.A.W. books.... though i will now need to read Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy : "The Universe Next Door", "The Trick Top Hat", & "The Homing Pigeons" but it is all worth it.... his books kick ass!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, STOP please!.......2002-04-06

I laughed until I started coughing up blood. This is without question the funniest script I've ever read in my life, but if I told you why, I'd have to kill you.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever owned!!!.......2007-04-30

This is one I first read about 35 years ago and re-read every few years. I would have to say this is one of the books that helped me to become a master. (2227 USCF and 2217 Canadian Federation -2388 ICC) But better then that it helped me to understand how to plan in what seem like slow or dull positions. I have given copies of this to anyone I know who asks how to improve. The thought process is clear and explained well. This book is geared to players from just starting out to even average club players who just forget basic ideas and how they work together. A deal at $10 too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Descriptive Notations Need Not be an Obstacle in Chess Learning.......2007-03-01

Beautiful collection of games and also shows that good chess instruction need not cost a fortune. The ideal rating for the students is from 1200-1500, though anyone who likes reading good chess literature will enjoy it. In descriptive notation which means that you can learn to be "bilingual" and be able to comfortably read both descriptive and algabraic notations. This gives you the flexibility to buy any chess book out there because not all of them will be written in algebraic notations.

5 out of 5 stars A book to savor, not to gobble.......2006-10-07

I am partial to Chernev, perhaps because he is such a good writer and has such an engaging and entertaining style. But bias or no bias, this is a sparkling collection of games with a generally positional flavor, though that's perhaps a bit of a simplification as there are great endgames and much, much more.

This is a book to savor slowly, not gobble quickly. I recommend taking quite some time to go through each game, even if it takes months to complete the book. Spending a week or more on a single game (say 30-60 minutes at a session for five to ten days) is not out of line, if you want to get deep understanding. Using a computer alongside might help; if you look around the internet you can quickly find PGN for all the games. Now, given the positional nature of many of the games and the lesser positional ability of most computer programs, you need to use the computer with care, but it will help you step through the moves and explore variations to your heart's content --- which is exactly what to do and how to get the maximum benefit from this fine book.

Bottom line: the book combines good instruction with excellent entertainment, and puts us in touch with the sheer beauty of chess.... a welcome break from examining White's 9th move alternatives in the Yugoslav, for instance!

5 out of 5 stars Chess to Enjoy!.......2006-09-06

Irving Chernev is, along with Fred Reinfeld, Edward Lasker, and Al Horowitz, one of the great popularizers of chess. None of these fine chess writers have much to teach the elite classes of players rated 1900 and above, although even strong players will enjoy the sparkling wit and breezy style for which these authors are admired. What these writers offer is their infectious enthusiasm, and their talent to entertain, inform, and instruct painlessly.

It has been pointed out by other readers that this book falls short in the accuracy and bias of its annotations. If accuracy and unbiased annotation is what you need, then perhaps you should pass on this title. But, if you are like me and enjoy a little drama and color and yes, even one-sided praise for the winner, then this book should delight you.

Monsieur Chernev writes for the average player, and he understands the fine art of chess annotation. He doesn't burden his reader with deep ramified variations. Such ponderous analysis tends to do little more than suggest to the reader that the Master is omniscient. Instead, this author strives to present only the salient points; the strategic themes, the immediate tactical considerations, and sometimes the missed opportunities in the game. By sticking to the main ideas, the reader is better able to grasp the material and to enjoy it, for enjoyment is the real point, and Chernev never loses sight of that fact.

The games in this collection are chosen especially for their strategic instructional value. Strategy implies a closed game (usually a d-pawn or hypermodern opening). Consequently, these games are not fulminating with wild tactics and dazzling combinations. The tactics tend to lie under the surface but nonetheless influence the play. To call any of these games boring is to miss the whole point. From a strategic viewpoint all these games are beautiful, exciting, and instructive. The introductory text for each game gives a sense of the human element; a mix of history, personality profiles, time, place, and event, and an overall description of the struggle about to commence. I have a lot of games collections in my chess library, but I have not been able to finish many of them. I couldn't put this one down. Have fun while you improve. Read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good but onesided view.......2006-07-31

This is a book that contains a variety of different games that are supossed to be instructive. Some of the games are interesting and some are rather boring. The author takes on the side of the winner, showing with exclamation points the brilliant moves, but not the weaker moves when they are made, except by the losing side. Often a good defense or better move was available that is not pointed out. Personally I like this author's other book "Logical Chess Move by Move" and "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" much better that show the ideas behind every move and doesn't seem to take sides.
This is still a good book, but very biased toward the winner of each game that effects the quality of the analysis.

                              Book Description

Friendship is remembering all of those precious girlhood moments we spent with our dearest pals, a variety of shared experiences that helped mold us into who we are today. Heidi Wozniak's friendship-inspired gift book is the perfect token of gratitude for those friends who've been by your side all of these years, through so many ages and stages. Heidi's delicate watercolors blend beautifully with nostalgic prose, creating a perfect gift for the friends who've been there through thick and thin. Because as any good pal knows, the days would be much bleaker if it weren't for a little help from our friends!

From the author: This article comprises a longitudinal study of community activism and regeneration following pit closure in the small Nottinghamshire ex-mining village of Warsop Vale. Based on more than a hundred interviews carried out between z998 and 2004, the article highlights the significance of 'new' solidarities and alliances between residents and external agencies in the gradual revitalisation of a community once teetering on the brink of extinction.

Arthur Bryant's "The Great Duke" is an excellent and well written military biography of the Duke of Wellington. Even informed students of Wellington's career should enjoy Bryant's pleasurable writing style. Bryant follows Wellington's development from his youth in Ireland through his early military experiences, to India, the Peninsular War, and in an epilogue, the Battle of Waterloo. Bryant pays the most attention to Wellington's time in Portugal and Spain, where he came of age as a great commander. Wellington emerges from this portrait as a military professional in the most modern sense, a master of logistics, intelligence, and tactics, able to translate the strategic goals of the British Government into practical operational-level campaign planning. Bryant's Wellington has a keen sense of the practical limits of his forces, Britain's only major expeditionary force, deployed days by sea from the British Isles and employed in a theater of war where it was typically outnumbered by French forces. Bryant describes Wellington's success in the Peninsular War as based on his disciplined use of his forces, his painstaking approaches to logistics and intelligence, his effective diplomacy with his allies, and above all, his ruthless application of common sense. He consistently stands apart from his French opponents in Spain in his insistance on seeing the situation as it was and in refusing to indulge in grandiose anticipation. Although the author comes to praise his subject and not bury him, the Duke does not escape criticism. For example, Wellington often had little patience with his subordinates; his reluctance to trust and empower his generals meant that he had to run virtually every battle in person. This book is highly recommended to the serious student of the Duke of Wellington and of the Napoleonic Wars.

                                                    Book Description

In this moving account of the barriers between Israelis and Palestinians, leading journalist Isabel Kershner traces the route of the wall Israel is building and reports its profound effects on people living on both sides. She provides rich and insightful portraits of Israeli settlers feeling abandoned on the wrong side of the fence; Palestinian farmers angry at being cut off from their lands and groves; Arab families split up in a town now divided by the barrier; and Israelis protesting that it is an obstacle to peace. Exploring the reasons for the barrier and its political and moral implications, Kershner focuses on the people committed to their causes. As the future relationship between Israelis and Palestinians is being determined, this important book addresses one of the most controversial solutions.

5 out of 5 stars exposing the fabric.......2006-04-29

I picture the Israeli-Palestinian conflict like the graphic computer simulations of a black hole in space-time. What you see is a neat mesh of lines that, near the black hole, becomes wildly distorted. So, too, is there a similarity with Einstein's thought-experiment of travel near the speed of light...what the traveler experiences and what the "stationary" observer of that traveler sees appear unreconcilable, yet both the traveler and the observer could claim truth is on their side.

This book follows the strands of human life, the mesh of those lives near the black hole, the "holy land". The author lets us see different perspectives while easing us through the background of events and people that have created the situation and live with it.

Less than a year old (published late 2005), this book takes us up past the death of Arafat but ends before Sharon's stroke. We meet farmers and townspeople, the highly placed and the low, the wealthy and the poor, the bitter, the outraged and the complacent, the victims on both sides. You begin to understand the tragedy of the whole situation, of the dreams that end in nightmare, of the horrors that some wish to make reality, of those who are determined beyond the reach of reason, of those who work to destroy all hope while claiming to preserve it.

I am 55 years old and have lived through a good portion of the episodes of this tragic region, though at a far remove. I know reasonable people who, when this subject arises, become unrecognizable in their thinking. I expect my last breath will be drawn with it still unresolved. It is the place where the rock meets the hard place, where for every one who would make a concession, there is another who will give none and this book portrays it revealingly.

4 out of 5 stars The Barrier to peace?.......2006-02-19

I always wanted to know more about this "Barrier" and it's affects it would have in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I was not disappointed. The author shows both view points and it's relationship to the people lives on a daily basis. A must read for anyone interested in learning more about the middle east and the people who live there.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting book.......2005-12-18

Isabel Kershner does tell us quite a bit about the Arab-Israeli conflict. But she owes it to us to put it in better perspective. It's not "balance" to tell the truth some of the time and repeat lies some of the time. Israeli desires for peace are simply not analogous to Arab demands for war. If Arab aggression against Israel ceases, there will be peace between Arabs and Israelis. If Israel ceases to defend itself, not only will there be a catastrophe, but there still will not be peace.

Yes, it is true that many Arabs sincerely desire a return to the, um, good old days (if indeed they were all that good) when Jews had no rights. Some people want to return to the days in the antebellum South when Blacks were slaves. But society needs to put that behind it, not in front of it.

To Kershner's credit, she does explain that the Israeli security barrier is "less an expression of choice than a measure of last resort." Suicide bombers had killed and maimed plenty of Israelis and "posed an existential threat to the Israeli way of life." In addition, the suicide bombings precluded peace negotiations. So Israel came up with a barrier. She mentions that only 5 or 6 per cent of the barrier is a wall, with the rest being a fence. She interviews both Arabs and Jews, and we get plenty of information about what some of them think. And we see that for most people, the conflict is not about land. It is indeed about rights.

Also to Kershner's credit, she tells us that in general, Israelis do see the United Nations and the International Court of Justice as seriously biased. And that Israel considers the West Bank to be disputed territory, not occupied territory.

One can write books that describe the attitudes of terrorists and racists and their supporters. But I think that Kershner ought to have made it even clearer that it is not a mere opinion of a few Israel-lovers that Levantine Jews ought to have a right to life. It is an absolute requirement for them to have such a right if we are to support human rights for all. The barrier is not pleasant for the Jews and Arabs, but the way to get it removed is to stop the Arab aggression.

This book reminded me that we really need to oppose lies. Do we wink when a public figure states that two plus two is ten, take him aside and reprimand him privately when he says it is a hundred, and scream with outrage when he says it is a thousand? Of course not. These days, there is genuine outrage when public figures say that the Holocaust never happened, that the Jews of Israel must be moved to some other continent, and that those Jews who stay in Israel must be eradicated. But there's only a private reprimand for those who say that the Jewish temples never existed, that there was never a connection between the Jews and Jerusalem, that Jesus was an Arab, that Jews did not write the Old Testament, or that the Israelis poison Arab wells. And there's often just a wink of implied agreement when folks say that Israel is a colonialist, greedy, peace-hating and racist state whose birth was an international crime, or that Jewish land in the Levant was all stolen from the real owners.

This won't work. Lies need to be opposed. And perhaps the most insidious lie is that the very idea of Levantine Jews being allowed to have human rights is the ultimate in immorality and that Mankind owes all racists an apology for permitting such a thing to ever have happened.

Society will always have some tyrannical opponents. We ought not be shocked to find that it has some today. Nor ought we be shocked to realize that this battle is not about territory but about human rights. I think it is a very big mistake to regard the battle over Israel as simply one over territory, with the only people supporting Israel being those who are infatuated with this little state (as if all those who opposed Germany or Japan in World War Two were infatuated with Czechoslovakia).

Kershner does show that many of those who live in the region can't see a wall as a reasonable long-term solution. I think they are right. For global society to function, people will eventually need to have the right to live pretty much wherever they please. And in return, people will need to support the right of the nations they live in to exist and to carry out their charters. Yes, there may not be a way to get there from here right now. But we need to remind ourselves that this is the proper goal as well as one which is likely to be achieved (even if only in the distant future). And that reducing the solution to this conflict to the theft of a couple of hundred square miles of land from a land-poor Jewish state is improper, arbitrary, anti-strategic, immoral, totally absurd in the long term, and antithetical to peace.
