    Book Description

Dan Flavin (1933–1996) is considered one of the most important and innovative artists of the late twentieth century. The simplicity and systematic character of his extraordinary work, along with his relentless exploration and ingenious discovery of an art of light, established him as a progenitor and chief exponent of Minimalism. Uniquely situated outside the mediums of painting and sculpture, the majority of Flavin’s work after 1963 consists of art made from light.

This landmark book—the first retrospective publication of Flavin’s art since 1969—includes around 45 of the artist’s most important light works, beginning with a pivotal series of constructed boxes with attached incandescent or fluorescent lights, called “icons,” made from 1961 to 1963. Works spanning Flavin’s career are discussed in depth, including examples that integrate light with the surrounding space and show the particular characteristics of blended fluorescent light, large-scale installations, and constructed corridors. The book also includes reproductions of Flavin’s drawings, which show his thought processes and working methods.

New scholarship and interpretation of Flavin’s work appears in the form of three critical essays by experts, an extensive chronology, comprehensive bibliography, and exhibition history. In addition, Flavin’s seminal text “‘. . . in daylight or cool white.’ an autobiographical sketch,” originally published in Artforum in 1965, is included.

Exquisitely designed and produced, with many new stunning color reproductions, Dan Flavin: A Retrospective captures the brilliance of this artist’s contribution to and challenges of the art world and will be the authoritative volume on Flavin for years to come.

2 out of 5 stars Everything but the film.......2007-01-10

This book was written for those of us who aspire to work in the motion picture industry. The author assumes that the reader already understands the basics of communicating with motion and sound, and for the most part discusses skills such as script writing, working with actors, and networking with people who work (or are trying to work) in the film industry.

I am pretty much the exact opposite of the book's intended audience: a still photographer and musician who is looking to learn the basic nuts and bolts of video and sound editing, and how to shoot better video footage and make the most of my DV camcorder and editing software. I am not really qualified to review this book, as it was not written for an amateur like me. It left out all the basic stuff I want to know, like the basic rules of editing and how to integrate sound and music with moving images coherently, so my videos don't look so much like home movies.

With all due respect to the author, I picked the wrong book for my needs. It's fairly interesting for reading in the bathroom, though.

3 out of 5 stars A little air headed lacking depth.......2006-12-26

Should be entitled beginners writing handbook or script writing bascis and not film school etc.Obviously a book for quick cash or evience of those who teach dont do for a reason. What was good is the lists of resources for those who do like to write and he basic truth of trial and error in experimentation for film as arrt and sciebce which could not possibly be covered a such a simplistic overview as one little book.If you've never written anything before whether it be a short story, poetry,or novel it is a good reference for a systematic approach to such things. He does show various forms of the script such as treatments etc and points a difference between stage and screen(in his mind) and explains the reasons for the plethora of action film and horror makings.
I rated it lowly because I felt drained after reading it,a writeres blockj if will,I call it having ones brains sucked out thru the optic nerve and numbified to the flow of process building in creation of visualality in writing and imagery of words and their structures. It was like an unvolunteered clearing by Scientologists.
I would have appreciated more concerning cameras and such or manipulation of people to film in public areas or on locations, release forms, more on distribution services, lab workings, what to be careful of etc.Overall it lacks. But who can say what is certain in such things aside from it depends on who you know or how much monies are at your disposal unless your a true artist and or a hipnotit to control actrs and eviroments.

1 out of 5 stars Too much blab not enough substance.......2006-03-03

Sorry, but I was extremely disappointed by this book. The title is misleading. It's more of an motivational guide for high-schoolers which could have been condensed into a single page. With one exception, the sample screen play excerpts were intructive as to format layout and purpose, but otherwise those too could have been reduced to 3 or 4 pages. The book itself is portable... but I wouldn't pass it on.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner filmmaker.......2006-01-12

This was a great book for people who are just getting started. I've read a lot of books on filmmaking and made films, and I think there are better books on the subject. I was also alittle disappointed that a majority of the book talked about screenwriting. I was looking for something that talked more about the overall process. I figured something that talked about the things you learn in film school would discuss everything. But overall it is a good beginner book for the beginner filmmaker.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book to get you started.......2005-12-06

I purchased this book while attending an intensive film course at NYU, and this book was an excellent complement to the course material. This is my second book I've read by D.B. Gilles. If you want to write your first screenplay, I'd suggest picking up "The Screenwriter Within," as well. Basically, anyone with a video camera can pick up this book and begin making short films. There are some neat exercises to get your creative juices flowing, but ultimately it's up to you to make your film. While it's difficult to find the self-discipline to be an independent filmmaker, this book points you in the right direction. You really have to be your own boss and entrepreneur. There are no teachers, parents or employers to create that structure for you. You have to be willing to go out and take risks, and realize that you will fail and make horrible films at first, but this book definitely shortens the learning curve. Buy this book before pumping $30,000 a year into film school. Will be the best $15 you ever spent.

                          Book Description

Amid the controversies surrounding physician-assisted suicides, euthanasia, and long-term care for the elderly, a major component in the ethics of medicine is notably absent: the rights and welfare of the survivor's family, for whom serious illness and death can be emotionally and financially devastating. In this collection of eight provocative and timely essays, John Hardwig sets forth his views on the need to replace patient-centered bioethics with family-centered bioethics.
Starting with a critique of the awkward language with which philosphers argue the ethics of personal relationships, Hardwig goes on to present a general statement on the necessity of family-centered bioethics. He reflects on proxy decisions, the effects of elder care on the family, the financial and lifestyle consequences of long-term care, and physician-assisted suicide from the perspective of the family. His penultimate essay, "Is There a Duty to Die?" carries the idea of family-centered ethics to its logical, controversial, conclusion; comments upon this essay from Daniel Callahan, Larry Churchill, Joanne Lynn, and journalist Nat Hentoff offer differing views on this highly charged subject. As advances in medicine prolong patient's lives, the welfare of those ultimately responsible for medical care-the family-must be addressed. Hardwig's courageous and illuminating essays set forth a new direction in bioethics: one that considers the welfare of everyone concerned.

                            Book Description

Leading philosophers and bioethicists revisit the disturbing question raised in 1987 by Dr. Margaret Battin: Is there is "a duty to die" in order to guarantee a just cross-generational distribution of limited health care resources? The essays collected here-including a new article by Dr. Battin-discuss the topic in-depth, providing a critical review of the literature and many new arguments. The debate includes not only those who support such a "duty" and those who say such a "duty" cannot be denied, but also those who doubt such a "duty to die" exists or question whether-if it did exist- it could be implemented without severe problems. Is There a Duty to Die? offers a balanced discussion across a wide range of opinions on the meaning of "duty to die," examining every sort of argument for and against the idea. Medical ethicists, and those concerned with end-of-life care, including the hospice community, hospitals, lawyers, legislators, jurists, public-policy makers, and religious leaders, will find it essential reading.

From the author: Many people were outraged when Richard Lamm claimed that old people had a duty to die. Modern medicine and an individualistic culture have seduced many to feel that they have a right to health care and a right to live, despite the burdens and costs to our families and society. But in fact there are circumstances when we have a duty to die. As modern medicine continues to save more of us from acute illness, it also delivers more of us over to chronic illnesses, allowing us to survive far longer than we can take care of ourselves. It may be that our technological sophistication coupled with a commitment to our loved ones generates a fairly widespread duty to die.

The shock and slaughter of the Somme, Verdun and Passchendaele are a major theme of most books. Large scale battles, however, comprised the smaller part of soldiers' total time in combat. For 90% of that time soldiers fought small scale battles. These small conflicts were violent, continual and involved complex weaponry and specialised tactics. Yet, during small battles, soldiers could and often did, make choices not possible during large ones. From these choices, there evolved between enemies a curious culture of live and let live which constrained the war culture of kill or be killed in fundamental ways.

Ashworth's book is notable in the fact that he has done his homework and the book is rich in detail and flavor of the horrid conditions of trench warfare.
He compiles plenty of information regarding the 'live and let live' system between the warring factions. There are some humorous stories blended in with grim stories of trench raids gone bad. The daily life of the infantry is detailed and his writing style is brisk in some areas and very detailed in others.
Anyone interested in the actions in the trenches should enjoy this one.

                                Book Description

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist tells the amazing story of how a group of imprisoned boys won their freedom, found justice, and survived one of the darkest and least-known episodes of American history.

In the early twentieth century, United States health officials used IQ tests to single out "feebleminded" children and force them into institutions where they were denied education, sterilized, drugged, and abused. Under programs that ran into the 1970s, more than 250,000 children were separated from their families, although many of them were merely unwanted orphans, truants, or delinquents.

The State Boys Rebellion conveys the shocking truth about America's eugenic era through the experiences of a group of boys held at the Fernald State School in Massachusetts starting in the late 1940s. In the tradition of Erin Brockovich, it recounts the boys' dramatic struggle to demand their rights and secure their freedom. It also covers their horrifying discovery many years later that they had been fed radioactive oatmeal in Cold War experiments -- and the subsequent legal battle that ultimately won them a multimillion-dollar settlement.

Meticulously researched through school archives, previously sealed papers, and interviews with the surviving State Boys, this deft exposé is a powerful reminder of the terrifying consequences of unchecked power as well as an inspiring testament to the strength of the human spirit.

A must read for anybody. I am currently employed at one of the said institutions in MA and heard of this book through a co-worker. I have worked here for over 20 years, long after they stopped admitting people. The residents that currently reside there get the best of care available and the staffing ratios way outnumber the amount of clients residing here. I am in no way condoning what happened to Freddie and all the other state children, I just wonder how some of the residents would have turned out if not institutionalized. My supervisor and I have roamed through the old dormitories and found a wealth of info and pictures. Some of the pics show young children about Freddies admission age that looked scared to death, it brought tears to my eyes to think of what these poor kids went through and reading Freddie's story helped me better understand just exactly why these children were admitted. When I started working here, over 1,000 residents lived here, now we have under 300 and the remaining people really do benefit from the care they receive. I just could not comprehend why some of the residents were there 20 years ago, now I know. My family has welcomed in a former resident in the shared living program and it has been benificial to both him and my family. After reading the "State Boys Rebellion", my only regret is that I never got to meet Freddie Boyce. In my eyes, he and all the other state children are true heroes for surviving the great injustice done to them. In closing, I have to truly say that I have been humbled.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting biographical-type assessment of American eugenics.......2006-11-26

Michael D'Antonio has provided us with a very interesting book that he has subtitled "The Inspiring True Story of American Eugenics and the Men Who Overcame It". There is no doubt that he cares tremendously for his subject, but this is not a comprehensive history of the Eugenics movement or even of the the State Boys Rebellion at the Fernald School for the Feebleminded.

From a journalistic perspective, this is a tremendous piece of writing & investigation. Evaluating the events primarily through the eyes of Fred Boyce, the author skillfully weaves in the stories of fellow inmates at the Fernald school and the events leading up to the rebellion. Unfortunately, the key point that I see as the "rebellion" only gets about 4 pages of treatment, with regular references to the people involved in the riot throughout the rest of the book. Boyce's life is traced up through the time when the book was written, and is a compelling story.

From a historical standpoint, although there is no clear thesis, the book obviously was written to educate the reader about the Fernald school and a few key residents that were able to make great strides in their lives and lead a relatively "normal" life after being released from the institution. The most interesting argument the author presents is that some of the medical experiments conducted within the confines of the Fernald school were reflective of Cold War America, where government aims included furthering science in an effort to find a way to defeat the Communists.

Overall, this is a very interesting book and an easy read. The story is enthralling, and keeps the reader entertained throughout. If the reader is looking for a comprehensive story of the American Eugenic movement, this is not the book; I believe there are probably better scholarly works out there that address eugenics in America. I would recommend this as a book to start one's understanding of eugenics and how this one school in the Boston area plays into the bigger picture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book About State School Horrors.......2006-02-03

The State Boys Rebellion tells the story of the Fernald State School in Massachusetts. Michael D'Antonio does a great job of telling the story through the eyes of Freddie Boyce, a child that grew up in Fernald. The story is quite chilling, specially to those of us who did not live through that time period. It is disgraceful that we, the United States actually started Eugenics, although I was taught in school that Nazi Germany was the creator. This book should remind us that as a society, we sometimes leave out the bad stuff our forefathers did, even if they meant no harm. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone, but it will touch the heart of anyone with a child who is considered "special".

I never gave the imposing Fernald School campus much thought, even though the house I shared with my friends was literally across the street from the large brick buildings. It was not until I researched the effects of radiation on soldiers during the Cold War that I learned Fernald's dirty secrets. I immediately bought this book, and it filled me with rage and despair. D'Antonio's style is not preachy, nor does he editorialize. He allows the recollections of those who were there to speak for him. Wherever he can, he uses several sources to shade each event, from conversations with the boys, to the memories of the staff members, to the cold, un-enlightening medical records from the school. As others have said, the story ends not in misery but in triumph. It is a cautionary tale about society's complacency and willingness to let the horrors of our past remain behind the locked doors of our crumbling institutions.

                                5 out of 5 stars Required reading.......2004-10-03

I believe that this book is a must read for all. It should be required reading for everyone entering the special needs field. People of normal intelligence continue to be sent to institutions for MR. I am just glad that everyone is treated a little bit better.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless children's classic of struggle and hope.......2001-09-18

Margery Evernden's Wilderness Boy is an engaging historical novel for young adults set in the summer of 1794, when sixteen-year-old Jonathon Garrett gets caught up in the Whiskey Rebellion. The uprising is in protest to a tax imposed on the new federal government and the first real test for the newly created United States of America. Originally published in 1955, Wilderness Boy has been newly reissued with a forward by Margaret Mary Kimmel and a one-page afterword. A timeless children's classic of struggle and hope.

                                  Book Description

In the decades before the Civil War, the miserable living conditions of New York City's lower east side nurtured the gangs of New York. This book tells the story of the Bowery Boys, one gang that emerged as part urban legend and part street fighters for the city's legions of young workers. Poverty and despair led to a gang culture that was easily politicized, especially under the leadership of Mike Walsh who led a distinct faction of the Bowery Boys that engaged in the violent, almost anarchic, politics of the city during the 1840s and 1850s. Amid the toppled ballot boxes and battles for supremacy on the streets, many New Yorkers feared Walsh's gang was at the frontline of a European-style revolution. A radical and immensely popular voice in antebellum New York, Walsh spoke in the unvarnished language of class conflict. Admired by Walt Whitman and feared by Tammany Hall, Walsh was an original, wildly unstable character who directed his aptly named Spartan Band against the economic and political elite of New York City and New England. As a labor organizer, state legislator, and even U.S. Congressman, the leader of the Bowery Boys fought for shorter working hours, the right to strike, free land for settlers on the American frontier, against child labor, and to restore dignity to the city's growing number of industrial workers.
