Book Description
One of this generation’s most popular cult fantasy artists, Brom has a distinctive and disturbing vision. 150 full-color reproductions offer a glimpse into the mind of this dark master whose work has enhanced books, comics, games, and videos, ranging from Dungeons & Dragons to Doom II. Among the material included are unpublished early works; covers such as the deeply unsettling Fire Clown and horror-filled Rat’s Den; and trading cards in a variety of genres, including the collectible Dark Age.

Macabre Fantasies.......2003-07-31
I saw this book in a store yesterday. The title, Darkwërks was what first caught my eye. So I picked it up, looked at the covers, back and front, and began to flip through the first pages. I was amused very much by the art created by Brom in his earlier years. For instance, when he was age 6, he drew quite a bloody scene; a body riddled with knives and sharp objects. So, I started to look through the pages. Immediately, I was captivated by his morbidity and uniqueness. The graphic beauty of each picture shot into my eyes and made my heart quicken. I had only planned to glance through the book, but within seconds I had become a slave to each work of art.
While definitely not for the....."Normal" person, anyone who loves the morbid and macabre will love this book with all their heart and soul. Beautiful, beautiful blood and violence. Femme nikita, freaks of nature, tortured souls and Dark Angels fill the pages of this magnificent masterpiece. BUY IT NOW!!! Hah...
Darkwerks: The Art of Brom.......2003-01-04
Just pop in some FrontLine Assembly, VNV Nation, Funker Vogt, and Apoptygma Berserk mp3s, and browse through this amazing collection of sci fi/fantasy artwork from the master known simply as Brom. Large, crisp, full-color photos of his amazing paintings grace this informative book. See sketches for some of his paintings in the margins, and view his talented early sketches from age 5, 11, and 20 years of age.
The Experience of Brom.......2002-12-22
Brom is the most amazing artist in the Fantasy genre. This book is a great buy if you love Fantasy art and you want to see a true master. Forget Frazetta, forget Vallejo, Brom is the one. This book portrays Brom's art to it's fullest. Beautiful, full color prints adorn every page, showing off Brom's masterful talent and attention to detail. Don't miss out on this one or it's sequal 'Offerings'.
Great Fantasy Art Book!.......2002-07-22
If you like to draw, like great art works, sci-fi, well fantasy art this book is for you. Brom his a great artist, very talented, his art book got lot of nice to weird art works. It had been a while since I search for a great fantasy art book and this one is the best I saw so far!
A collection of Brom's work.......2002-06-08
Brom is a fantasy artist who is best known for his work on his work Dark Sun, Deadlands, collectable card games, and book covers. He stands out from Boris & Julie as well as Frank Franzetta partially for the sole reason that most of (though not all) of his portraits contain people who wear clothing, albeit usually something fetish inspired, leather and latex. He has a very distinct style, painting very beautiful moon-skinned redheads and tan wild-elven creatures, which stand along detailed landscapes that insipre the imagination. Some of his work is disturbing (though not quite as disturbing as H.R. Geiger), and mostly very dark (what would you expect from a man who listens to Nick Cave while he paints?) but all of his work is remarkably well composed and masterfully detailed.
Brom has a larger influence than many people realize, for example the evil albino in the recently released movie Time Machine could very well have come directy from the pages of Darkwerks. To get an idea of how popular Brom has become, just type in his name in any search engine (Google works best). Darkwerks is a very good collection of his art, containing very little text and allowing all of the pages to be showcased in full-sized, full-colored glory.

Intriguing glimpse into the world of feature animation.......2005-03-12
This book is as beautiful as the background watercolors of the original movie The book takes a personal look at the stories behind the movie. Not necessarily linear in presentation, the chapters are broken into narrations by different creators of the film and either how they came to be involved or how they added to the film. The art that is scattered throughout each chapter is often beautiful.
I personally have two favorite images from the film, one a watercolor of a drainage in Hawaii, overgrown with native plants and the second is drawings of how the alien creature, experiment 626, would work showing his skeleton and structure.
This book is listed as for ages 4-8, total mistake. this is not a kids book but would be appropriate for early teens through adult. It is an excellent book for those interested in animation, or as myself, a fan of Lilo and Stitch.
a beautiful book!!!.......2003-05-19
this is a must have for any fan of the "art of" series books. it is as beautiful as the movie itself. it is splashed with all the beautiful rough drawings and amazing watercolor paintings that take your breath away. i wouldnt have asked for any more!!!!!!!!
Lovely.......2003-05-12
A charming, lovely book, a great compliment to the movie, and the perfect gift for any fan of Lilo & Stitch. If you count this gem among your favorite films (as I do), this book is a must-have for you, as it's filled with gorgeous sketches and watercolors, showcasing the development of the characters and setting. (I'm gushing, yes, but I can't help it.) And it's filled with little stories from all the key members who worked behind the scenes, reminding you of how very human animated films are. Personally, I think this is the best of the Disney "Art of..." books, but I'm biased, as Lilo & Stitch is my favorite Disney film. It's not hardcover, but it hardly matters. The book is unique, just like the film.
Like The Film, The Book is A Nice Departure.......2003-03-10
"Lilo and Stitch" was the perfect summer family film. Lighthearted and heart warming, it contained all the elements of the best Disney has to offer. The great thing about this film is that it did this without all the fanfare and majesty that, as of recently, has been dragging down the Disney films. This pseudo-making-of book offers the same unpretentious vision. As most fans of Disney animation know, this type of book is released for every feature. While quite a few have been really nicely done, most have been bogged down in the technical aspects of animation. While it is an awe-inspiring and often misunderstood process, hearing and re-hearing about the animation process gets a bit stale. These publications began to feel like the same book with different pictures. Thank goodness the creators of this book have taken a refreshingly different approach to telling the story behind the story of Lilo and Stitch. Personal accounts and artistic insights prove to be just as entertaining and engaging as the sketches and watercolors that fill this slim addition to the Disney Making Of Library. Like the film, the book doesn't feel the need to show off the technical merrits of the production. Too often authors of animation books come across defensive about the medium, forcing comparrisons with other more respected mediums (film, fine art, literature) as if there is a need to defend animation. In a way they are preaching to the choir. Most people who purchase these books already respect the process, the amazing artists, and the mountains of work that goes into each production. Lilo and Stitch the book finally offers some insight into the creative minds and, more importantly, hearts of the creative forces behind the magic. Let's just hope that Disney, particularly their Florida unit, continues to produce animated features with this simple charm and storytelling. With more films and books like Lilo and Stitch it would make it easier to overlook the occasional "Atlantis" or "Treasure Planet".
Excellent!!!.......2003-02-28
I could not put this book down...I read it all in one sitting. If you're a fan of the movie this is the book for you...strong recommended!

WHAT CAN I SAY, WHADDA GUY HE WAS........2002-08-28
Mr.Cab Calloway was one of a kind. I think I was the last person on this earth to purchase this thin paperback booklet. In this book, Mr.Calloway explains his childhood. In his words, he was the most rebellious, stubborn, unrelenting black S.O.B you've ever wanted to meet. In my words, his stubborn ways is what drove him to fame. This book tells how he got started in show business, watching his sister Blanche Calloway while on tour with her and her band. If you are a Cab Calloway fan, and want to learn more about his life and his journey through show business; then this is the book to read. Dempsey J. Travis captured Cab Calloway's true feelings and personality. Mr. Calloway also talked about his fondest memories of being on the road, performing. From the mouth of Mr.Calloway, his philosophy was: People should grab a hold on life and live it to the hilt. Life is a fleeing and old age is a creeping; you got to get to getting while the getting is good.

Interesting, but handicapped by blatant errors........1996-11-24
The TV Game Show Almanac is an okay choice for those who want to do light reading on the genre. It's main flaw is consistently blatant errors and other inaccuracies that can lead one astray. The Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows by Fred Wostbrock is a much better choice, and more interesting

Book Description
Healthcare organizations in the UK and the USA face a growing tide of regulation, accreditation, inspection and external review, aimed at improving their performance. In the USA, over three decades of healthcare regulation by state and federal government and by non-governmental agencies have created a complex, costly and overlapping network of oversight arrangements for healthcare organizations. In the UK government run National Health Service, regulation is central to current health policy, with the creation of a host of new national agencies and inspectorates tasked with overseeing the performance of NHS hospitals and other organizations.
But does regulation work? This book:
. explores the development and use of healthcare regulation in both countries, comparing and contrasting their experience and drawing on regulatory research in other industries and settings
. offers a structured approach to analysing what regulators do and how they work
. develops principles for effective regulation, aimed at maximising the benefits of regulatory interventions and minimising their costs
Regulating Healthcare will be read by those with an interest or involvement in health policy and management, including policy makers, healthcare managers, health professionals and students. It is particularly suitable for use on postgraduate health and health related programmes.

Book Description
In August 1793 Republican France teetered on the brink of collapse. On every front her enemies' armies swept forwards across her borders – the very survival of the Revolution itself was at stake. In Toulon, the strategically vital home port of France's Mediterranean fleet, a coup had overthrown the Republican government and handed over the city to the blockading British navy. In this, perhaps her darkest hour, France's saviour was at hand in the shape of a Captain of Artillery whose name all Europe would soon know - Napoleon Bonaparte. This title describes the Republican victory at Toulon that not only saved the Revolution but also saw the young Napoleon Bonaparte begin his meteoric rise to power.
Customer Reviews:
Chaotic collisions and opportunities siezed.......2006-07-18
The infant French Republic was in trouble. Internal revolt and enemies on all frontiers could have spelled the end of France as a nation. One flashpoint was a major French naval depot on the Mediterranean, Toulon. Admiral Hood had been directed with neutralizing the French Mediterranean fleet when an anti-Jacobin revolt virtually handed Britain that fleet. Spain, allied with Britain because of the anti-Catholic, anti-monarchical bent of the French Republic, sent the bulk of allied ground and naval forces to Toulon--with a slightly different agenda. There were also contingents from the city-states of "Italy" (not quite a nation at the time) and other European states--including several anti-Jacobin French factions. The French forces were not much more united.
A young artillery captain from Corsica, Napoleon Bonaparte, stepped into this stew of intrigue and opportunity. The French Republic had dual command chains, a fore-taste of the Soviet political commisair, the "representitives on mission"--a neccesary evil because the "true believers" of the Republic often lacked military skills and the professional military officers didn't always demonstrate adequate loyalty to the Republican government in Paris. Robert Forczyk achieves something unusual in popular histories--he does not chose a side in the campaign. It is rare that a historian treats all the antagonists as humans. The normal thing is to label one side "the good guys" and demonize the other. This even-handed approach is usually more accurate because chosing sides frequently means ignoring the "hero's" many flaws and playing up any petty little vice of the "villians." Both sides in the Toulon campaign had their share of vices. Napoleon, for instance, started off as a minor officer who had been more-or-less AWOL since being commissioned. Napoleon made connections with the Republican government and played up his own successes. At the end of the campaign, as a wounded war hero, Napolean's star was ascending.
I don't know much about the era of Napoleon--World War Two is my specialty. However, it seemed that everyone wanted to be the next Napolean. Santa Ana of Mexico was the Napoleon of the West. Adolf Hitler was an admirer of Napoleon. The old joke is that mental hospitals are filled with men who think they're Napolean. Somewhere in my library resides "Napoleon's Maxims," a reprint of a popular American Civil War manual. Forczyk painted Napoleon as a subordinate officer during Toulon--Napoleon didn't remain subordinate!
Illustrator Adam Hook's dramatic "The Storming of Fort Mulgrave" and "The Batterry de la Montagne Opens Fire on the Allied Fleet" add visual drama. On of my reasons for buying Osprey is the fine illustrations. The reproduced drawing on Page 24 depicts the ragged nature of 18th Century "uniforms."
Page 12's chronology, like the maps, helps organize the campaign's chaos for the reader. Battles take place over space and time: use maps and time-lines. I'm still involved with military operations, and even minor training exercises get confusing due to the complexity of many moving parts going in different directions. Don't ask me to tell you about my National Guard drill of last weekend--I don't have a good timeline to explain the entire thing. Isn't it funny that the events of two centuries ago can be more "clear" than last week's adventures? Don't overlook the Order of Battle (pages 29-32).
"Toulon 1793: Napoleon's first great victory" has a bibliography (with many of the sources in French rather than English) and a useful index. Seven maps and two "bird's eye view maps" helped me make sense of the confused and chaotic fighting that took months to resolve. Photos include some taken by the author at the Musee de la Marine in Toulon and the Musee de l'Armee in Paris (including the Musee de la Relief in the attic of The French Army Museum at Les Invalides)--worth the extra time and cost for military historians visiting Paris). Many of the illustrations are period paintings--photography was in its infancy and battlefield photographs were in the future. Speaking of "future," Forczyk devotes a short chapter to Toulon of today. The copyright date is 2005, so if you visit the French Meiterranean you can see the battleground yourself. Forczyk writes that there isn't much left, and that the museums are open only part of the year. I can vouch for that! When I visited the Hotel des Invaildes, Napoleon's Tomb was undergoing renovations and closed to the public. Warning to tourists: Toulon can be dangerous to the careless visitor. Take the same basic security precautions that you would when visiting any major American city.
Most of "Toulon 1793" is about the battle for the port city of Toulon. Napoleon's rising star is but a part of this battle. Historians do not like to speculate "what if" because "what was" isn't always clear. Forczyk comments on logistics and the failure of the British to interdict coastal supply routes. He provides many examples of poor politics, inept strategy, operational incompetence, and tactical errors. When the British and allies evacuated Toulon, they failed to destroy the French fleet and port. It's all part of the friction of war. History helps lift some of war's fog, but after the fact.

Yellow by Frank H. Wu is an eclectic, incisive investigation-cum-meditation that, though focusing on Asian Americans, recasts the United States' ongoing debate about racial identity in all forms. Wu suggests that the widespread stereotyping of Asian Americans, while "superficially positive," is inherently damaging. Mixing personal anecdotes, current events, academic studies, and court cases, Wu not only debunks the myth of a "model minority" but also makes discomfiting observations about attitudes toward affirmative action, what he calls "rational" discrimination, mixed marriages, racial profiling, and the "false divisions" of integration versus pluralism and assimilation versus multiculturalism. Though its conclusions are unremarkable, Yellow is thought provoking. The book's strength--besides its clarity and thoughtfulness--is a lack of tendentiousness. Wu prefers to suggest, not posit; muse, not shout; and ask questions, not necessarily answer them. --H. O'Billovitch
Book Description
A leading voice in America's Asian community tackles what it means to be Asian American in contemporary America.
Writing in the tradition of W. E. B. Du Bois, Cornel West, and others who confronted the "color line" of the twentieth century, journalist, scholar, and activist Frank H. Wu offers a unique perspective on how changing ideas of racial identity will affect race relations in the twenty-first century.
Wu examines affirmative action, globalization, immigration, and other controversial contemporary issues through the lens of the Asian-American experience. Mixing personal anecdotes, legal cases, and journalistic reporting, Wu confronts damaging Asian-American stereotypes such as "the model minority" and "the perpetual foreigner." By offering new ways of thinking about race in American society, Wu's work dares us to make good on our great democratic experiment.

Excellent Resource on Being Asian and Asian-American........2007-09-06
My only concern with this book was that it felta little dragged out, like perhaps a better editor would have made it more concise. Nonetheless, I managed to make my way through the entire thing and it was well worth it. While I don't have the energy to write a very intense and long review, I must say that his chapters on the model minority myth (coming from a victim of the stereotype and one who believed it to be true) and on the dangers of rational discrimination are both extremely enlightening. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book that doesn't leave non-blacks or non-whites a little left out of racial discourse in America.
Superlative Overview and Introductory Book.......2006-09-30
My only claim to understanding Asian-American racism in the US is being a victim of it. I am no scholastic expert in the field, not even a closet scholar. My father immigrated from Taiwan. My mother suffered the indignity of the internment camps during WWII. But I didn't learn about my ethnicity, or racism, from them. Born in the US, I learned as many of my generation did- through experience. So from this perspective, Professor Wu has done a magnificent job of accomplishing two great tasks in a single, readable book: he has outlined a superb historical account of Asian-Americans in America with respect to racism, and effectively defined and explained the complex manifestation and quandaries of racial issues for Asian-Americans.
There is, of course, an accounting of the most egregious cases of racial bias and outright bigotry in the history of our country. But even more importantly, Professor Wu effectively summarizes the history of Asians and Asian-Americans in the US to help explain how the model minority stereotype is a two-edged sword that actually in many ways exacerbates the problem and in some ways enables the problem to proliferate, particularly by playing such a stereotype off against the stereotype of Afro-Americans. Make no mistake, Professor Wu strongly espouses coalitions among not only Asian-Americans, not only all minorities, but all peoples. It is, he argues, the only way to bring resolution. But the conundrum of racism, as he effectively describes it, is truly one of color and the perception of color. Being white in America is perceived by many as the ideal, the epitome.
For example, when the issue of my ethnicity came up in my office, recently, one of my staff, attempting to be gracious, remarked: "I never noticed you weren't white." (Firstly, the fact that I am not white is obvious.) Unintentionally, and without any malice, she was inferring that being white was, if not the expected standard, at least the preferred state. Wu explores this phenomenon in some detail, with numerous examples. To me, it became equally important a concept as the more overt examples of discrimination and bigotry, and I concur with Wu that in some ways this perception is more dangerous, because it is more prevalent and insidious-- and in many ways it is true. Which is part of the problem.
Wu continues by exploring cultural traditions and and perspectives, and how those differences can lead to both misunderstanding and contribute to the phenomenon of the "glass ceiling" faced by some Asian-Americans. He also discusses the phenomenon of assimilation-- and particularly here draws upon the histories of all immigrants to our country-- as part of the equation. In summary, the conflict is balancing integrating into the "American" culture (something which is itself evolving, if ever so slowly) and maintaining one's own native cultural identity.
I got a little bored as Wu delved into the intricacies of the differences between "pluralism" and "multi-culturalism" and other such semantics. But I took his meaning.
I enjoyed his personal exploration of his own immigrant parents' perspective-- that their dreams and expectations and cultural background would have shaped their perception of racism somewhat differently than mine and those of my generation. It helped me understand my parents better, and that is a true gift.
Finally, I was also intrigued by his expounding on the blending of Asian-Americans; not only the implications for the future, but the fact that in inter-racial relationships, the Asian culture tends to become submerged, whether the non-Asian partner is white, Afro-American, or other. Witness Tiger Woods-- who is by percentage genetically more Asian than Afro-American. Culturally and in appearance, we tend to forget this.
All I can say was that I found this book the perfect introduction to the history and the concept for me-- just someone looking for more insight, some answers. It generated substanial profound thought, in addition to the expected outrage and mourning... it has dramatically improved my awareness. And made me appreciate my parents, and understand more my role as a parent to Asian-American children.
Thank you, "Mister Frank."
A Good Book, Even if It Doesn't Say Much That's New.......2006-03-24
I admit a love-hate relationship with books about Asian-American issues. Too often, they recycle the same points - the Yellow Peril, the Japanese-American internment, the Vincent Chin murder, the "model minority" myth, the L.A. riots - and, too often, they offer much discussion but little solution. Let's face it: we live in a nation founded by displaced Europeans and driven primarily by greed and marketplace. It's unlikely that anyone who doesn't fit easily into the mainstream can or will succeed fully, no matter having a claim to moral high ground.
As a group, Asian Americans have done better than some others, but not without significant barriers, and in a country where the fire of national debate on black and white issues is stoked routinely by self-serving pundits, politicians, and pop stars, the tribulations of Asian Americans are considered trivial. The irony, of course, is that worldwide, Asians are the majority, and despite NASA's assertion on the Voyager probe that Earth men look like the da Vinci drawing, the reality is that most men look like Wu. Or me, half-Asian though I am.
So, while there is a place for books like Wu's, I'm just not sure where it is. Wu is a good writer, even if many of his points are the same ones I've heard since entering college in 1986. His premise that Asian Americans historically and routinely face discrimination, even violence, is an important and all too real one. But I don't know who he's writing to. Is it other Asian Americans? Unless we're in denial or brain dead, we already know the score. Is it non-Asian Americans? Oddly enough, there's a similar problem. Those people thoughtful enough to care have probably heard the issues before. Those who aren't don't want to. Of course, I'm exaggerating here, but without a national platform, all the books in the world about Asian-American issues won't make much of a difference. And there is no national platform to speak of.
I say all this having been born the same year as Wu, grown up a stone's throw from him in Toledo, and faced much of the same bigotry that he did (and still does). I probably watched Johnny Sokko with him on WXON-TV, Channel 20, though I remember the show being in color. I recall my parents teaching their children the right values, and more importantly, actually living them. I'm even an academic. As nostalgia, Wu's book makes a connection for me, and perhaps this is its greatest value: allowing people who've had similar experiences to realize they're not alone. But that gives it more therapeutic than pedagogical or political value. After all this time, I'm ready for the latter.
A Monumental Tour de Force.......2005-09-15
This is an incredible eye-opener on the civil rights movement as it pertains to Asian Americans. Professor Wu covers the breadth of the Asian American movement, highlighting the immigration patterns of our forefathers from the Asian continent. He also delves into the civil rights issues of not only the past, but the modern era as wel--such as affirmative action and the perpetual foreigner syndrome afflicting those of Asian descent.
Its All Been Said Before.......2004-01-29
This was a disappointing book. Besides being long-winded and self-indulgent, if not downright egotistical, the book repeats that which has long been at the core of Asian American Studies scholarship. However, the book oversimplifies and overgeneralizes in ways that reputable scholarship never would. One thing is clear from the book -- Professor Wu really thinks highly of Professor Wu.

Birds-that eat the flesh of other animals! OOOO, chilling!.......2005-07-28
This book is quite good. If you have a thing for birds of prey, you need this book. The information will help you learn many facts that you never knew before(I bet)and the photos of these beautiful and feathery creatures of the sky will take your breath away. My very favorite of these birds is the perigrine falcon, but that's just me as you know. You read this book, enjoy it, and decide which bird of prey is your favorite of all time. I think you get the message.
