The Artist Returns.......2001-07-11
Parts of the person's heart and spirit, along with very personal ideas, find their way into THE ARTISTIC TOUCH. Artist Christine M. Unwin organizes artists' commentaries on their works in acrylic, collage, mixed media over monotype, mixed water media, oil or watercolor. This nicely illustrated book gives great ideas for painting abstract; animals; boats; buildings; flowers; land, sea or sky scapes; machines; Oriental themes; people; pictures with a message; the Southwest; still life; and travel. The quality is high on every page, such as the author's "Cappuccino" and "Roman wall"; Virginia Blackstock's "Copper & brass II"; Mary Braukman's "Down under"; Al Brouillette's "Dimensions VIII"; Jeanne Dobie's "Lady Gullah"; Nita Engle's almost photo precise "Beachy head"; Marsha Heatwole's "Punda milia kuja na kwenda"; Danguole Jurgutis's "Starry night"; Lena Massara's "Really spring"; Lorraine Chambers McCarty's "Departure"; Edward Minchin's "Japanese landscape"; Carlton Plummer's "Haitian light"; Joan Ashley Rothermel's "Spirit"; Susan Vitali's batik resist painted "Orchid series #2"; and Donna Vogelheim's "Tea & fruit with old bags," with her hallmark painting in some of her son's marbles. The entire book is hands-on applying what readers find in Angela Gair's ARTIST'S MANUAL, Carole Katchen's 200 GREAT PAINTING IDEAS FOR ARTISTS, and Ralph Mayer's THE ARTIST'S HANDBOOK OF MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES.

"When legend becomes fact, print the legend."
Director John Ford's quote prefaces Based on a True Story: Fact and Fantasy in 100 Favorite Movies, a book that digs into the facts behind 100 movies that were--supposedly--based on true events including popular fare as Hoosiers, Ed Wood, Seabiscuit, and Erin Brokovich. Previous books of this lineage were usually written by historians who looked at every foible of a film. Here, authors Jonathan Vankin and John Whalen come from a more movie-centric position. They know filmmakers must telescope events, create composite characters, and give the Hollywood treatment to other elements to simply be produced and enjoyed. They are movie fans who can praise The French Connection as a grand film with terrific action sequences, but note the true events were far less visceral (leading to the book title's asterisk "but with more car crashes"). More modern films are examined in these 3-5 page segments with excellent further reading notes including Web sites. The authors also question how truthful a film should be, even great films, praising the accuracy of Ghandi and GoodFellas and delivering harsh blows to Monster, Braveheart, and A Beautiful Mind. Besides the usual chapters of factual films (war, sports, biopics), they also search out films "based" on paranormal incidents that can't keep the "facts" straight. Mentioned often, and placed at the end of the book, is Oliver Stone's JFK, the movie that "gave birth to this book." In one sense, the film "must be the most fact-heavy film in Hollywood history" but the sources materials are so questionable. Perhaps Stone realizes the power of Ford's quote better than any other Hollywood filmmaker. --Doug Thomas
Book Description
Exposing the real stories behind 100 hit reality-based movies, this captivating resource offers interesting facts about some of the most well-respected and much-loved films. For both film buffs and casual moviegoers, this invaluable guide explores Hollywood's ardent and often uncomfortable relationship with the factual accounts it converts into fantasy. Illuminating films such as A Beautiful Mind, Adaptation, Apollo 13, Black Hawk Down, Catch Me If You Can, Erin Brockovich, The French Connection, The Perfect Storm, and Titanic, this work reveals how Hollywood alters history for movie fans, leaving filmgoers often unable to tell the difference between fact and fiction. A riveting examination, this volume focuses on alterations to the "true story" such as concocted love affairs, annoyingly obvious character motivations, trumped-up endings, bigger explosions, more car crashes, and spontaneous songs, all created for the sake of entertainment.

Informative and Accurate.......2006-05-03
Great book because it gives the other side of the "based on a true story" movie. Makes you look at movies in a different light.
Disillusioned - Over and Over Again.......2005-08-25
The authors do meticulous research and supply ample source footnotes in their reviews of one hundred movies dating from the seventies to many quite recent releases. Their analysis is so straightforward despite the liberal interjection of sarcasm that it is impossible to conclude that the great majority of Hollywood filmmakers couldn't honor truth if you paid them to, even though in many cases they apparently enjoy pretending to while being paid.
If you are a movie fan and look at cinema as a strong forcefor "truth and beauty" in the world this book will cause you to thing again. Is it possible that all the failed would be blockbusters are an indication that the audience has enough continuous access to viewing video products that even the most uncaring are better able to instinctively sniff out obscured incredibility and turn their noses up?
The fascination with mere flickering images may be over. We will see what happens as the means of production goes all digital and the price of entry into movie making goes down by orders of magnitude. It may be that everyone can get a shot at being a star. We also may be on the receiving end of many opinion pieces masquerading as documentaries. Yes I know, at least Michael Moore cares and believes passionately about his subject matter.
If you really want to hear about an instance of dishonest and ludicrous audience manipulation do an internet search on "lemmings to the sea" and find out about Disney's cruelty and venality in the 1958 production "White Wilderness". Suffice to say that lemmings never hurled themselves off cliffs committing suicide.
An antidote for psychic pain at the multiplex.......2005-08-15
As an historian who is also a film buff, I try to be lenient when faced with a movie that bends the facts more than necessary. Anyone who has ever tried to write a screenplay, even one based on a novel much less on a real person's life or a real historical incident (and I have), knows you do indeed have to adapt a story (or real life) to the medium of film -- but there's a limit, and some flicks are just too much to take. The authors, talented entertainment-journalists, know this, for the most part. They obviously loved *Shakespeare in Love* and admit that it stuck close to the exceedingly few facts that are known about Shakespeare; likewise *Girl with a Pearl Earring* (a gorgeous film), since almost nothing is known about Vermeer. And they'll accept the rather minor biographical changes made in *Erin Brockovich* and *Norma Rae* as being simply unavoidable. But they really rake Mel Gibson over the coals (deservedly, I think), both for the perversion of English history committed in *Braveheart* (the Christ-like martyrdom of Wallace, they suggest, was practice for *The Passion*) and for the equally perverted treatment of the American Revolution in *The Patriot* (which pissed off a lot of people on the other side of the Atlantic with its suggestion of Nazi-style behavior on the part of the British). They come down hard on *The Hurricane* for claiming that Carter won fights that he actually lost, merely to reenforce the theme of racism, nor have they anything good to say about *Elizabeth*, the 1998 version, in which Cate Blanchett portrays a young queen so insipidly naive and trusting, "she wouldn't have lasted longer than a fortnight (or whichever ye olde calendar notation ye prefer)" -- in which they'll entirely correct. (I hated that movie.) They don't have much use for Spike Lee's egotism, either, especially in *Malcolm X*. They reserve real venom for the fact that *Amistad* not only jerks history around, the production company, Spielberg's Dreamworks, actually had the nerve to send out study guides to schools promoting wholly made-up characters as actual historical models to be emulated. In other cases, the authors simply wonder why liberties with real people were taken unnecessarily, as in *Seabiscuit* or *The Elephant Man*. Some of the biopics the pair analyze, such as *American Splendor*, probably don't belong here (Harvey Pekar is hardly "historical"), and some, like *Communion* and *The Mothman Prophecies*, don't belong anywhere, but they presumably had to come up with an even hundred. However, the film that led to this book being written is Oliver Stone's *JFK*, the most vilified film ever made -- before it was even released. As the subsequently published "documented screenplay" demonstrates, every voiced opinion in Stone's film came out of forty years of assassination research. "To its critics, *JFK* was a film that offended their deeply held view of the world. Stone questioned their religion." This is a good book to keep at hand while browsing through your DVD collection.
It Needed More "True Story" and Less Opinion.......2005-04-07
Based on a True Story tells the "real facts" behind dozens of movies that are supposedly based on real people and stories - from blockbusters like Erin Brockovich to more obscure films. The stories are often fascinating and revealing. But the authors' analysis often left me frustrated - they obviously give certain films more leeway than others when it comes to bending the truth. One film might ignore inconvenient facts, and it's dismissed as "blatant pandering", but another movie might do something almost identical and it's called "fulfilling the director's vision". It's quite obvious which types of movies the authors like and which ones they don't. I enjoyed the backstories behind the films, but after a while I started skipping over the authors' harangues.
Fun Read but...........2005-02-01
"Based on a True Story" is an immensly enjoyable mini-survey of the "real" story behind many of the fact-based films of our time with particular emphasis placed on how much "fact" there is at each films base. The breezily written accounts of these films are always fun to read and, if they don't "expose" many new factual mis-steps (How many film fans are there who don't already know how "fictional" the purportedly fact-based "A Beautiful Mind" is?)they do offer intelligent, brief, discussions of films that (wonder of wonders!) actually merit them. One major quibble though: For a book that is dedicated to exposing falsehoods in films of all sorts, it perpetuates one of the greatest. This is not the first book that attributes the line from "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" ("When the legend becomes fact, print the legend") to John Ford. Ford DIRECTED the movie. The screenplay was by James Warner Bellah & Willis Goldbeck, from a story by Dorothy M. Johnson. While it is notoriously hard to tell who did what in a film, one would think that the Screenwriters should at least be credited with the DIALOGUE!

The ultimate restorer's guide.......2005-12-03
This book is a must for anyone contemplating the purchase of an antique automaton singing bird box. The late author was THE world-renowned expert in restoring these miniature works of mechanical and artistic wizardry. Divided into sections based on the manufacturers or country of manufacture, each section is extremely informative and clearly written. The mechanisms are shown in various stages of disassembly and detailed information on proper functioning and repair are provided. Whether you own or plan to own one of these amazing boxes, the book allows you to appreciate the technical aspects of these marvels and makes you comprehend why they command such high prices. Fabulous pictures of boxes from private collections. With knowledgeable restorers being almost non-existent, this is an asset to the owner of a box or to would-be restorers. A+++++

This book describes how to do anything and everything you could ever want with an xbox.
It starts of very simple by describing how to open up the xbox and take out the parts. But by the end of the book you will have covered such things as;
-Installing Mod chips on all versions of xbox
-Choosing the right dashboard
-Learning the Xenium OS
-FTP your computer and xbox
-Flashing a bios and installing a dash board
-Customizing your own dashboard
-Replacing the case
-Installing hard drives over 137GB's
-Custom lighting
-Xbox Media Center
These are just a few of the many things that fascinated me about this book. A person who has never seen an xbox before could pick up this book and read it and have a completely pimped out xbox in a week.
It is FULL of very detailed explanations and it has tons of very useful photographs.
I would HIGHLY recommend this for ANY one who is going to open up their xbox.
very handy book.......2006-08-30
This book is very helpful if you are contemplating making any hardware changes to your Xbox. My primary reason for buying this book was to replace my Xbox DVD drive which started giving me read errors about a year after I bought it. While DVD drive replacement is not one of the topics fully covered by the author, there are sections in the book that will help you get most of the way there and you can find the rest on the web. The author does cover installing a mod chip and upgrading the hard drive, and he does this very well. The book is full of illustrations and step-by-step instructions. Above all, the book helps you get more out of your Xbox while keeping it legal, as piracy is not condoned by the author, nor does he show you how to do anything illegal. This was definitely a good purchase for me.

Book Description
What is family time and what value do we place on it? How many families today have time to be families? How do families view, use, and seek to control time, and how successful are they at it? Caught between a public world speeding along on information superhighways and their own private desire to preserve the family as a rest stop, family members look for new and efficient ways to protect, control, and manage their time. The concept of time is central to the study of families and is used in several different ways: families have changed through history, families experience the passage of time as they age over the life course, and families negotiate time for being together. Families & Time is the first to synthesize these differing concepts of time into a broad theory of how families understand time. In this important volume, Kerry J. Daly examines time as a pervasive influence in the changing experimental world of families. The book opens with a discussion of the various ways time can be conceptualized, in general, followed by an examination of how families have experienced time throughout history. Subsequent chapters examine the social construction of time in families; as well as such specific topics as time and technology in the home; controlling time; and the societal, gender, and intergenerational politics of family time. Though at its heart a theoretical book, Families & Time consciously focuses on the practical aspects of this theory in understanding the power in the family, the family life cycle, and work/family conflicts. Scholars interested in the development of theory of the family, examining gender and work issues, and exploring various perspectives on time will find this book indispensable. "In this compelling portrayal of the patterns and politics of family time, author Kerry J. Daly has produced a masterpiece. Destined to become a classic, Families & Time will alert scholars across disciplines to the breadth and depth of interdisciplinary family studies. Accessible to everyone, Families & Time can be read for knowledge and pleasure, as a new contribution to family theory construction, a mediation on the pervasiveness and value of time in family experience, and a wellspring of creative ideas for families who want to gain control over their perceived loss of time in an accelerated society. Scrupulously documented in a writing style that combines metaphor, narrative, and empirical findings, Daly succeeds in offering a new consciousness and theory of family time. I will read and recommend this book to others over and over again." --Katherine R. Allen, Ph.D., Family and Child Development, Virginia Tech

Propaganda on Propaganda.......2007-05-18
After reading Nicholas John Cull's "Selling War" (1996), I was happy to see that he had authored a subsequent book. I commend his efforts and those of his colleagues to produce an encyclopedia on propaganda and mass persuasion. As a former lecturer in European Modern History, I liked the introduction by David Welch, Director of the Centre for the Study of Propaganda at the University of Kent until he failed to question the U.S. government's conspiracy theory in which they alleged that 19 Arabs carried out the twin towers attack on September 11, 2001. Much to the dismay of the 9/11 truth movement, Welch failed to consider the likelihood of another "Reichstag fire". David Ray Griffin's "The New Pearl Harbor" (2004), available at Amazon, addresses the many holes in the government's conspiracy theory, suggesting a faction within the U.S. government itself orchestrated the attacks and blamed it on Arabs.
After identifying a real phenomenon--the fakery of "information" by government, the authors' attempts to catalog government propaganda are irritating in their omissions. For example, there are entries for "Propaganda, Defintions of" (p322) and "Psychological Warfare" (p323). But there is no entry for 'information warfare' or even 'Hollywood' - propagandists who played a major role in Cull's book "Selling War". Further omissions are noted within the definitions where there are entries. For example, under Cull's entry "Iran", he tells us "...in 1953 the United States, which had now succeeded Britain as the dominant foreign power in the country, stepped in, with the CIA backing a coup to restore the shah to power" (p185). All true, but he neglects to tell us that Ayatollah Khomeini had been stashed in France by CIA as a backup man in the event that the shah could not maintain his grip on Iran. When Khomeini did take over after the shah was ousted by the Iranian people, Cull does not tell us that his takeover was orchestrated by Khomeini's U.S. bosses. Khomeini's Islamic rhetoric duped many, but tens of thousands of Iranians were not duped and had to flee. Cull does not tell us that Khomeini's "Great Satan" speeches directed against the U.S. were little more than PSYOPS upon the Iranian people to camouflage the fact that U.S. AWACs helped Iranian F-4 fighters against Iraqi MIGs from 1980-88, surveillance sites on the Soviet/Iran border were still being maintained, and oil flowed to Europe and Japan. In short, if one was to plug their ears and trust their eyes, little changed in Iran from shah to Khomeini where Western interests were concerned. Cull's entry for "Terrorism, War on (2001-)" is a disappointing rehash of government propaganda. Nowhere does Cull tells us that a faction within the U.S. government pulled the twin towers and Building 7, which housed the CIA's New York Section office, after flying commercial airliners into them. Readers are not told that Marvin Bush was in charge of security at the Twin Towers, or that the power went off for one hour on 9/10, which was ample time to plant the explosive devices that took down the towers. Stanley Hilton, a former aide to Repubican Senator Bob Dole, collected affadavits from witnesses who heard the bombs go off, then claimed someone broke into his office and stole them. The government blew up the Twin Towers and blamed it on Arabs and Afghans, but Cull pretends that governments do not do such things.
Much of Cull's problem in separating truth from propaganda is that he relies on secondary sources. Doesn't Cull know that CIA publishes thousands of text books and other so-called authoritative books to keep the general public, even the intelligentsia, from knowing what is really going on? Congressman Frank Church uncovered that aspect of CIA's information warfare back in the '70s. Why is Al-Qa'idah known as Al-CIA-dah? Cull has repeated so much propaganda here that his encyclopedia, rather than distinguishing propaganda from fact, is more propaganda. I don't know why he succumbed to this. Perhaps when he was giving lectures to the British military, he was made to sign the Official Secrets Act and he can no longer say what the government did without facing some gaol time. Given my expectations, this book was a disappointment.
Book Description
With the reconstruction in Iraq under way and the distraction of the U.S. presidential election behind us, focus will once again turn to a gathering threatThe Islamic Republic of Iran. A charter member of the "axis of evil," this rogue terrorist state and the mullahs who govern it are on a collision course with American and European governments that seek to end its development of nuclear weapons. The influence of Iran cannot be discounted, however, because it has perfected the art of oil price manipulation in order to fund its nuclear endeavors, terrorist activities, and strategic contributions to key U.S. politicians who, in turn, work diligently at normalizing diplomatic and trade relations between the two nations.
In ATOMIC IRAN, Jerome Corsi, co-author of the best-selling UNFIT FOR COMMAND, uncovers the true intentions and practices of the Iranian regime and gives light to the aid and comfort being supplied by some key U.S. politicians. Uncovered is a web of pro-Iranian financiers who make significant campaign contributions to political leaders who affect U.S. trade policy towards Iran and are able to work at normalizing diplomatic relations, thereby legitimizing the rogue republic. This poses an immediate security threat to the United States. It allows the regime to take advantage of relaxations in the Patriot Act to begin importing terrorists under the disguise of diplomatic personnel.
Also revealed is the manipulation of world oil prices by Iran. Its restriction of supply has the dual effect of hindering the growth of world economies and increasing revenue for Iran, which is then used to fund international terrorism and its own deadly pursuits. Dr. Corsi warns that a nuclear Iran would devastate the Middle East through its tyrannical policies and threats and would have a significant impact on the world by using its control of 40 percent of the global oil supply to hold nations hostage with oil prices rising to over $100 and even $200 per barrel.
ATOMIC IRAN is a wake-up call to Americans. It is a call to pay attention to the growing crisis with Iran and to hold U.S. politicians accountable for their relationships with and efforts on behalf of the Iranian regime. By understanding the events that led to Iran's arrival at the verge of nuclear statehood, the intentions of the mullahs, their connection with American politicians, and the severe repercussions to be suffered from allowing the regime to proceed with its plans, readers of ATOMIC IRAN will be equipped to take the debate to their local communities and to the officials they have entrusted with their safety and security.

An urgent read.......2007-04-24
Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (3/07)
Jerome R. Corsi has written "Atomic Iran" in an effort to give the American people a wake-up call to the crisis facing our country. He presents a strong case, advocating that the Iranian mullahs are supporting terror internationally. And that these same mullahs are already at war against both Israel and America. Israel is in danger of nuclear retaliation from the Shiite Muslim's of Iran, under the presidency of Mahmouid Ahmadiejad.
Corsi further warns that Americans have been lulled into a false security, influenced by the mainstream media. Behind the scenes the Iranian mullahs are influencing our politicians. Iran, a nation with a terrorist mindset, a nation rich in uranium resources, is on a collision course with America and the governments of Europe who are seeking to end the development of nuclear weapons.
Differences among congressional leaders on diplomatic and economic issues make it difficult to take an unbiased and objective stance while reading Corsi's work, however, since the book was first published in 2005 in the hardcover edition, many of his predictions have taken place and even the most skeptical are taking another look at the message of "Atomic Iran."
This is a book, urgent in its' disturbing message, well-documented, and timely. "Atomic Iran" should be read by every voting American. Corsi has presented a clarion call to the American people to become informed and to wake up to their responsibility as a citizen.
Great reporting and analysis of the Iranian problems we face.......2006-09-04
Iran is in the news nowadays for very important reasons. It is ruled by a regime that is bent on creating its own atomic weapons and has the expressed intention of doing harm to us and our allies. Additionally, it is supporting the Shiite side of the struggles within Iraq and actively undermining our efforts there and the Iraqi attempts at self-rule and democracy. Iran is also supporting Syria and through them Hezbollah and their attacks on Israel and the West.
The book is divided into three parts. The first presents five chapters on the way the Iranians are trying to influence our political process. Both sides of the aisle are compromised by these efforts, but in different ways. The huge amount of money that Iran and other Muslim nations make from oil gives them great power and they use that to influence those who would like to share in that wealth. Jerome Corsi lays out the facts and you can decide for yourself how disturbing you find this information. I found it not only revolting, but a cause for serious concern.
The second part presents five chapters on the terrorist activities sponsored by Iran and what their future strategies might be. It is clearly exporting terror to undermine the West since Khomeni took over in 1978. We simply have to listen to what they say and take the direct meaning of their fundamental goals seriously. The filigree about peaceful purposes for the nuclear efforts are clearly said to create diplomatic space for them to continue their work on their fundamental goal of being a nuclear power that threatens Israel and the West. Their ability to extort the West with oil will also increase once they demonstrate a nuclear weapon. What then?
The third part consists of two chapters on two approaches towards dealing with Iran. The first chapter deals with the variety of military threats and options we could use. It turns out that none of them are much good and the Iranians know that. They are not good for a variety of reason that have to do with geography, our weak allies in Europe, our quasi friends / enemies in Russia and China, and the willingness of the radical Muslim mind to take hurt in order to achieve their larger aims. Iranian leaders have stated that one nuclear bomb in Tel Aviv could destroy Israel, but a nuclear attack on Islam cannot destroy it.
The second chapter lays out the argument that we should increase our efforts and spend treasure on undermining the regime in Iran and encourage that significant but repressed portion of the Iranian population that wants to be a moderate nation that is free of the mullah tyranny.
The conclusion of the book draws all the points of the book together and the epilogue deals with events in Iran and the rise of Ahmadinejad in the "run-off" election against the more moderate Rafsanjani. These events occurred since the hardcover was published in 2005.
Good reporting and interesting analysis. Corsi doesn't provide simplistic solutions nor is a raving or partisan attack as some (who probably haven't read the book) claim. Read it and decide for yourself.
Wake up call?.......2006-08-21
This book was informative as far as explaining who some of these groups are in the middle east. But it adds to the aggravation of being told the same old fairy tales over and over again which by now have been proven not to be the truth! When are these people "in the know" going to get it?
The American hard stand against Iran is not a matter of oil, democracy, or geopolitics. It's about the security of Israel........2006-06-23
The book is very informative regarding the nuclear ambitions of Iran and gives horrific details about repression in this country and the multitude of crimes commited against the women and anyone who does not support the theocratic regime. Mr Corsi goes far beyond this though, accusing the Democrats that they "endorsed the mullahs" and even took money from them for the Kerry-Edwards campaign of 2004. He is very caustic against Kerry for his suggestions that the US must first gather support from its allies and use diplomatic means and sanctions against Iran, before choosing the military option, but this is exactly what the Bush administration has done so far! The author has the view that the US are in clear danger of suffering a nuclear catastrophe of terrible proportions if it allows Iran to build nuclear weapons (the vivid description of a hypothetical nuclear detonation in New York is really shocking!) but he does not hide that the US must also fight to prevent an attack on Israel, which he calls "the canary in the mine". Mr Corsi explains with honesty why Israel may decide to strike first, why it may risk wholesale destruction (the "Samson Option") in order to take out Iranian nukes and how it manipulates the US decision-making through the loby and the Evangelical church. The chapters against Kerry and the Democrats offer little to the knowledge of the Iranian crisis, and as a European, I think that describing the US Democratic party as "Left" is a little absurd, to say the least. If we believe Mr Corsi's book, Americans must be ready to fight and die for Israel because this country is a democratic bastion in the Middle East, but is this really a matter for US policy? Washington also supports dictators worldwide, like General Musaraf of Pakistan and the military junta that really rules Turkey for the last 80 years.
Mad Mullahs live in a virtual world.......2006-06-05
I am an Iranian, and the Atomic Iran unfortunately is a true story.
I would encourage Dr. Jerome Corsi to write about the human rights violation or political prisoners in Iran that causes by the mad Mullahs. I am willing to provide you with substantial documents that you may need to start another book.
