In a gay heaven, the choir robes would be designed by Gautier after drawings by Tom of Finland. Even on Earth, utopia must be approaching when the musclebound torsos and bulging baskets of Tom's manly men attract a full-length critical study. Art historian Micha Ramakers, who previously edited a monograph of Tom of Finland's drawings, argues persuasively for the influence of these hyper-masculine figures on gay culture since the mid-1950s, when the artist's renderings of fantasy men first began to appear in American beefcake magazines. Although the consistency of Tom of Finland's technique and themes over the four decades of his working life doesn't leave Ramakers much room to discuss the development of his subject's talents, he makes ample use of his few opportunities (like the introduction of more black figures in the mid-1980s, after the artist spent six months in the U.S.). More rewardingly, he uses the pornographer's work as a lens for examining the evolution of gay masculinity since the 1950s. --Regina Marler
Book Description
In this groundbreaking study of the art of Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991), better known as Tom of Finland, Micha Ramakers explores the incredible and defining impact Tom's work has had upon the culture at large. It is work whose erotic and emotional power remains unabated to this day. Lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs, Dirty Pictures is a lively and entertaining book encompassing the rise of the gay movement, the world of fine art, and the function (and the functioning) of pornography. For the millions of fans of Tom's work throughout the world, as well as readers unfamiliar with his work, this study brings uncommon insight into Tom of Finland's decidedly uncommon work.

A Must for Your Coffee Table.......2000-07-22
"The art of Touko Laaksonen (1920 1991), famous throughout the world as Tom of Finland, has had an incredible and defining impact upon the culture at large an impact that arguably exceeds that of any other artist working in the latter half of the 20th century. It is perhaps even more remarkable that Tom of Finland was not a traditional fine artist his work was most commonly regarded as gay pornography, and rightly so. Yet it is art that not only had a tremendous impact upon the emerging gay culture worldwide but whose erotic and emotional power remains unabated to this day. For millions of fans throughout the world, as well as those unfamiliar with Tom of Finland¹s art, this book brings uncommon insight into a decidedly uncommon body of work." - text excerpt from Stonewall Inn
Tom Tom Tom.......2000-04-10
If you love Tom of Finland, you will absolutely love this book. Seemingly hundreds of his prints, even such rarities from his early work, grace this book and give it a flavor that seems to be lacking from other pictorials. This book is utterly delightful and insightful as to the man himself. It was wonderful and I'd recommend it to anyone. Five stars all the way!

Very useful.......2006-10-12
This book presents some fine instruction and some fine illustrative paintings. The best part, for me, is that Ms. Lewis shows many color mixtures used to achieve many of the specific colors shown in her paintings. You can learn from this book.

Book Description
Independent filmmakers by nature are creative individuals whose primary tools are their imaginations and ingenuity. They are cinematic storytellers. While some independent films take the film festivals by stormdistribution deals, sales to video outlets and cable televisionothers fall short. Luck and timing play roles in most success stories, but many independent filmmakers have taken the next step: They have carved out a clear-cut plan of actiona business planfor their projects and careers, analyzing them for what they truly are: businesses.
This work helps to connect the creative process and the business side of independent filmmaking by providing a practical guide for assembling a business plan that filmmakers can present to producers and potential investors. A sample business plan and interviews with independent filmmakers and industry executives are included.

It's all in the plan..........2007-06-18
This book has two sections: the first outlines the requirements of a business plan, and the second is a sample business plan, with the intention that you copy it and fill in the blanks.
The first section is very helpful in giving you an overview of what is expected in a business plan, and why. Most crucially, it gets you thinking about your investor and what they are looking for from the deal. Many projects that reach the business-plan stage fail because they to not acknowledge the business element of filmmaking, but focus on the artistic merits of the project. In reading the first section, you'll gain a good understanding of the steps to present your project to an investor. A slight weakness of this is the presumption that you'll have an army of entertainment lawyers to complete the funding process. This is advisable, but not always the case.
The second section, however, is where the book falls short. Reading through the business plan, it is laborious in its repetition - while there is a need to restate some facts or intentions, this plan goes overboard. It is also quite poorly structured: for example, half the plan is an overview of the filmmaking process that assumes your investor knows nothing about film. This information should be in an appendix - an investor should not have to wade through 20 pages of this before reaching the numbers and projections they're really interested in.
In summary, this is a good guide to the realities of presenting your project to investors, but it doesn't deliver as well on that promise as it could. Still a worthwhile read and a useful addition to any low- to mid-level filmmaker's bookshelf.
excellent reading for the about-to-be-indie-producer .......2006-12-19
The first thing you notice when you read Mr. Campisi's book is how well written it is. As a writer myself that means I will inherently respect this author and truly absorb what I am reading. Now, I must be honest, this is the kind of book that has always intimidated me, that I tend to shy away from - for I'm not exactly what one would call a natural with regard to matters of finance (as is my screenwriting partner who 'gets' this stuff quite easily). So it was rather pleasing to read this book and actually comprehend what Mr. Campisi was saying. He informs the reader without being condescending. He instructs without being pedantic. The second thing you notice is the warmth and humor: the book is actually fun to read. The cold, complex and harsh worlds of finance and Hollywood are anything but inviting and amusing yet Mr. Campisi manages to embroider his sage advice and interviews with charm and an eloquence that confidantly invites the reader in and says, "Hey, learn from me... I went through this too, you can do this... if you want... if you work hard... IF you are willing to take the time to learn and dispense with the pretense and attitude that will surely drive investors away." My writing partner and I recently decided we wish to produce our first project. We might not have made that choice to produce ourselves were it not for becoming familiar with this well-organized, smartly written book and its knowledgeable author. This is recommended reading for any first time indie film producer who dares to dream, who dares to ponder swimming in those frigid, uncharted waters of the industry. Don't be afraid to jump in - this book is a terrific vessel to get you ashore. The Sample Indie Business Plan alone is worth the money.
from soup to nuts.......2006-12-17
Infused with real-world examples and humor and just a little Hollywood edge, Campisi takes you through (from a to z) how to prepare a business plan for investors that even a film-world neophyte can understand and learn from. It's not easy to have your pie-in-the-sky ideas shot down, if you were thinking in vague terms of what a business plan should be. But over and over enthusiasm for the indie newbee and a you-can-do-this attitude make rolling up your sleeves to do the hard work you need to do to wade into the choppy waters film finance, not as hard as you think. I'm using it like a bible right now,as I step into those choppy waters myself and need to catch that Campisi life-preserver he throws into the current now and then. Watery metaphors aside, I highly recommend this book. Besides the appendix rocks with a distilation of the book into a business plan - its worth it to work your way through the book, just for the appendix.
Extremely disappointed.......2006-10-24
I was extremely disappointed in this book. It told me nothing I didn't already know and nothing that isn't available in numerous other books of the same subject matter. Considering the nearly $ 40 price, I thought I was getting a definitive book on the subject matter and I would hardly call it that. Oh but the cover is beautiful. Smart marketing.
Essential.......2005-08-13
Gabe's book "The Independent filmmaker's Guide to Writing a Business Plan for Investors" is a must for any indie film company. While many books exist on the subject, Gabe's is able to package complex information into an easily digestible format for all readers. The book understands the changes taking place in the film industry.
Anyone not using this book will have to work harder to find the critical information needed to be a success is this competitive industry.

Book Description
Americans love the convenience, speed, price, and taste of fast food, and the introduction of combo meals has made ordering even easier. But while the fast food chains have been combining menu items and adding up the prices for us, nobody's been adding up the fat and calories. Many popular combo meals have more than 1000 calories per meal—and they're loaded with fat. You can enjoy the convenience of your favorite fast food restaurants without sacrificing health. This innovative guide makes it easy to order lower-calorie, lower-fat meals by putting foods and exact amounts to order at your fingertips. Smart Fast Food Meals includes 48 different meals from the top 12 fast food chains—all totaling 700 calories or less, with less than 30 percent of calories from fat.
Customer Reviews:
I loved this book!.......2003-11-13
This book does not make any pretense of being a tome about the evils of fast food meals--and it doesn't need to. We all KNOW the nutritional disadvantages and the risks we run of eating at fast food places too often--and too much. Ms. Reinart obviously lives in the real world and gives some real world ways to minimize the risks and circumvent the problems. Like, bring an apple or an orange with you. Make sure your home meals are as nutritious as possible. Hold the mayo. Simple? Sure. I knew that. So did you. And yes, we would probably all be healthier if we NEVER ate fast food. But for those of us living on Planet Earth in the third millennium, this book is a handy, portable reminder that maybe we don't need the extra mayo on the Big Mac, and it IS possible, though perhaps not easy, to save the money on fancy restaurants--which are no more nutritious anyway--avoid the boredom of brown-bagging, and maintain our health and weight.
Thanks, Ms. Reinhardt!
Disappointed..........2000-07-12
I purchased this book for my husband, who had heart surgery several months ago. I thought it would be helpful if he had to use a fast food restaurant for lunch. This book is NOT for the serious-minded person who wishes to truly eat healthfully. If you are "addicted" to french fries and burgers and not willing to try the salad bar or baked potato offerings in say, Wendys, perhaps you'll find this book useful. Otherwise, don't waste your money. The author is not a dietitian so I should have known better.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but a lot of filler........2004-07-15
The book gives a decent overview of 'Special' or 'Elite' forces, and their role in modern day warfare and counter-terrorism; all very interesting and timely. However, I found the contents amateurly structured and VERY repetitive. At times I thought I had accidentally lost my place and was re-reading whole chapters. With each new heading, much of the same information was reiterated, without actually casting much new light on the topic. There are also a few redundant instances of numbers being thrown around for the sake of sounding 'scientific'.
Also, if I'm paying good money for a hardcover book, I expect someone to have done more than a cursory MS Word spellcheck, like maybe proofread it before it goes to print...
Other reviewers have also noted some factual errors, and I noticed some topics the writer dismissed as "murky" (especially if casting Special Forces in a negative light), and declined to comment further. I found this odd, since some of these topics are well-known to anyone with any interest in the post-Viet Nam military and a matter of public record.
In short, this book would have benefitted from a good editor.
If you're new to the topic, you could do worse, but I would recommend Tom Clancy's Special Forces for information, and Robin Moore's The Hunt for Bin Laden and Charles Beckwith's memoirs concerning Delta Force for both information AND a good read.
Not Definitive, but a good survey with reservations.......2004-03-29
Dunnigan's book is certainly timely. Special Operations Forces (SOF) from all US services (USCG included), and allies have been making headlines in Afghanistan and Iraq for almost two years. The "Quiet Professionals", contrary to US Media propaganda, generally eschew ANY sort of public attention. For the reader with an interest, and little background, in Special Operations then, finding surveys/histories is problematic. After giving a history of special operations forces and their derivation, the author shows how some of the selection methods are applied to many first-world nation's volunteer forces; thus making them also "perfect soldiers" into the 21st Century. His best work is the short history of warfare, where "warrior cultures" are bested by military professionals (US military bureaucrats spouting about "warrior ethos" take note). His descriptions of operations in Vietnam, the Gulf I/II and Afghanistan are quite good as well. The "reservations" I refer to above have to do with some of his linkage and conclusions. While it's probably fair to link the fieldcraft of neolithic hunting parties with that of SOF (John Keegan's belief is that the arduous selection and training is designed to reinstill those skills that our ancestors grew up practicing.), it's going too far to consider them "commando/SOF" units in any sense. WW1 Stosstruppen were simply line-infantry given some retraining in tactics and new weapons, no special selection or skills in operating behind enemy lines was given or expected. Also, the author gets some details wrong, details that could've easily been corrected had the manuscript been reviewed by someone with SOF experience-but this is minor.
Overall, some good information, but some stretching of history to fit his thesis, keeps me from recommending this book completely.
JFD again delivers "approachable" military history & info.......2004-03-07
No work on a subject this involved can possibly be all things to all people. That is not James F. Dunnigan's goal with this book...or any other book he has ever written. The excellence of this book is its capacity for exhibiting military data in contexts that the average reader can understand. Nearly all of Dunnigan's writing is pursued with this goal. To demand that one must have "lived" a military background in order to write about it accurately and compellingly can be argued in another forum. This book delivers what it sets forth to achieve, doing so in a way that readers who do not have exhaustive military backgrounds will both appreciate and comprehend.
who are you ,John Rambo ?.......2004-02-18

Book Description
More than half of the world's population lives in Asia and the Middle East-and is becoming more and more alienated from America. Now a uniquely qualified Asian writer explains-provocatively-why.
After publishing articles in leading American journals over two decades, Kishore Mahbubani was described as"an Asian Toynbee, preoccupied with the rise and fall of civilizations" by The Economist. Trained in philosophy in North America and Asia, and well-experienced in realpolitik as a diplomat on the world stage, Mahbubani has unusual insight into America's ever more troubled relationship with the rest of the world.
In Beyond the Age of Innocence Mahbubani reveals to us the America that Asia and the rest of the world see. We are a country that has given hope to billions by creating a society where destiny is not determined at birth. After the Second World War, we created a global order which allowed many nations to flourish. But when the Cold War ended, America made a terrible mistake. We started behaving like a normal country, ignoring the plight of others, indifferent to the consequences of our decisions on others. America was imprudent in its policy towards two large masses of mankind: the Chinese and Muslim populations. Guantanamo damaged our moral authority, but Abu Ghraib, paradoxically, may have demonstrated the accountability of American institutions. Still, disillusionment with America has spread to all corners.
To allow any lasting gap between America and the world, Mahbubani argues, would be a colossal strategic mistake for America and a huge loss to the world. But there is still time for the US to change course; and in this thought-provoking, visionary book, Mahbubani shows us how.
Customer Reviews:
The twisted mirror image of America.......2006-04-21
Kishore Mahbubani is an avowed admirer of America and what it stands for. When the European empires crumbled in the aftermath of the Second World War, it looked as if America was going to deliver mankind from servitude and oppression and faciliate every nation's right to self determination...and for the longest time, America was that beacon of light to which all free men gravitated. So how is it that within a short span of less than 50 years, the world's most powerful and admired nation has become the world's most misunderstood and disliked nation by a surprisingly large number of otherwise friendly nations ? In this excellent treatise, Mahbubani laments that America has forgotten the adage that with power comes responsibility, that as the world's only superpower, it cannot afford to behave like any ordinary nation and act only in its own narrow interests. The tragedy is that America's low level of self awareness and appreciation of the extent of its power and influence over the lives of the rest of mankind has led it to behave insensitively - even parochially - towards the rest of the world thereby inadvertently sullying its own image. If America has sinned against the world, it has done so unknowingly but that's no excuse when the stakes for the future of mankind are as high as they are. Mahbubani argues that the tragedy being played out is not irreversible and urges America to take stock and reconsider its stance on inter-civilization and strategic policy issues to become yet again the great nation the world once admired.
"Beyond The Age of Innocence" is an astoundingly intelligent, well argued and relevant treatise on a subject that must be on the minds of most citizens of the world. Read it.
America, there is a world out there!.......2005-12-27
Mr. Mahbubani's book is a valuable resource on foreign policy. He hopes the book will help "make American society aware that daily, billion of pairs of eyes are watching, studying and judging America." - xix. Mahbubani came from a poor Hindu family in Singapore and luckily got a scholarship to university. His perspective is very interesting because of his view from having been poor AND privileged. He also looks to America as a shining example in the world, but has some problems with some of our policies of the past thirty or so years.
I first saw him on "Foreign Exchange" with Fareed Zakaria and it should be noted that his style of writing is very similar to that of Zakaria and Thomas L. Friedman, both of who he quotes a great deal. The book is very strong in the beginning when he talks about how America has helped and harmed the world as well as America's relation with Islam and China. Mahbubani's chapter on China where he suggests that having China become the major dealer with Islamic countries is VERY interesting:
"Even though China has a sizeable Muslim population of its own, this Muslim minority has not dictated the terms of China's engagement with the Islamic world. As a consequence, without any historical baggage (unlike, say, Islam with Christianity and the Crusades), there is no natural antipathy between Islam and China. Instead, there has long been admiration of the great Chinese civilization within the Islamic world. If China successfully modernizes, its success may have a powerful ripple effect throughout the Islamic world. Many Islamic thinkers are reluctant to use the West as a model for Islam to emulate . . . But these same thinkers would have no hesitation to use China as a positive example." - pp.125-126
Toward the end, Mahbubani starts to sound like a NY Times columnist like Kristof, Dowd or Krugman attacking (and repeating) how America has harmed the world with farm subsidies, Iraq, Kyoto and the IMF. He has lost some of his great faith in America and you can see this.
One of his biggest wishes (and I am in full agreement with him) is that regular Americans need to know more about international affairs. According to Mahbubani, Americans (and even many government officials) rarely know how their actions in international affairs have ripple effects on others around the world, in many ways they never would know or realize. Many Americans have no idea how a good deal of the world holds them in contempt for things America didn't necessarily think was bad at the time, but may have turned out differently later on. This is his main point of the book: America has to implement its policy while examining ALL of the possible effects on others, because it could come back to haunt you. Sure, one policy might not be favorable to another group or groups, but you must be cautious and wise.
Two movie quotes would sum up this review: Spock (from Star trek II) said, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one." And from Spiderman (and Mahbubani uses this): "With great power comes great responsibility."
Overall, a recommended book on what America can do to re-shape it image in the world while also dealing with the rise of China.
America.......2005-12-24
Mr. Mahbukani should know that "America" is a continent and not a country. He should have titled his book "Beyond the Age of Innocence: Rebuilding Trust Between the United States and the World.
If you are not with us, you are against us.......2005-10-14
Kishore Mahbubani's book provides, in uncluttered prose and through a balanced lens, a wake-up call both for current/future architects of U.S. foreign policy and for the ordinary bewildered U.S. citizen. This book details the flaws in current U.S. direction and manages to do so in a fair and balanced manner, which never smacks of the shallow and often uninformed anti-Americanism that is so trendy at the moment.
Mr. Mahbubani clearly loves America and so his stark criticism of its behaviour is the honest and earnest admonishing that one sometimes hears from a true and trusted friend.
George Bush's offensive words: "If you are not with us, you are against us." came to mind as I read this book. At a governmental level, many countries must give the appearance of being with America; it is economic suicide to do otherwise. At a societal level, however, America has few allies.
This is worthy reading.
A Super Power to Beat All Without Intimidation........2005-08-26
America has done more than any other country to change the world, according to Singapore's Ambassador to the United Nations. This is the story of America and the world from the Asian viewpoint. He served in theSingapore Foreign Services for thirty-three years from 1971-2004. He lavishes praise on the support of his mother, saying that she has tremendous strength and resolve, courage and fortitude. Now if Jeff would say the same about me.
He calls these difficult times we live in. He says that America has alienated hundreds of millions of European colonists, which is the reason the Muslims hate us and want to cause mass destruction. If they hate us so much, why are so many living in the United States now?
"In your face" is an American term for when a person's personal space and sense of dignity are violated. He gives personal experiences and examples comparing what has happened to him to how "people" feel about the American government: "it is park on their toes." Read the book to see where that comes in!
He discloses that there are rising levels of anti-U.S. (6 billion people) around the globe, particularly the Asian and how they feel about the American power (not good, too bad!).
So he spent some time in New York at the United Nations, and yet he looks down on the reputation of the United States, writing that our beneficiaries react with anger or bitterness (as I did the privation of one Arthur Friend into my life uninvited).
American power has both beneficial and harmful dimensions, and affects every human being on the planet. Who would have thought we were so popular to keep them coming back for more? They hate and despise what we do and write but keep on keeping on. Why don't they decide to hate Russia or Spain. He is the author of CAN ASIANS THINK? I think not.
