Customer Reviews:
Condensed Century.......2005-07-07
How did the DK staff manage to condense a century of Disney into 124 pages? This is a great coffee table book. It has enough colorful pictures to keep a preschooler occupied, and enough text to satisfy adult fans. I liked the index in the back--makes referencing quick and easy. Well done, Russell Schroeder! Disney television, Disney theme parks, Disney cruises, Disney stage productions, and of course Disney movies and merchandise fill this image-rich book. If you had to purchase each image on postcards, they would be smaller--and cost a whole lot more.
An excellent visual survey.......2002-11-15
Disney: The Ultimate Visual Guide will make the perfect family Christmas present for families already interested in Disney's wonders. Disney has touched lives for decades: Disney: The Ultimate Visual Guide provides an excellent visual survey of the extent of the animated creator's works and the logical progression of Disney talents and creations. A fine oversized picture book the entire family will enjoy.

Great book for freelance artists.......2007-09-24
This is a great book of sources for freelance projects. It has interesting articles and tons of people to contact. You do need to read through carefully to pick publishers who are more likely to need your services.
must have.......2007-08-14
essential to the start-up freelancer or the old pro who wants new contacts for work. I wish they had this when I was starting out...
Don't Waste your money........2007-06-21
Don't waste your money. As an art-rep I think this book is depressing and does not give a complete view of the choices that artists have. I found many mistypes and I believe that their sources are not a good spread of the market. My advice is to get it from the library and explore your options on the web. Just like anything start at the bottom, be nice, willing to learn, and stick to it. It is possible to make it.

Despite the Synopsis..........2003-04-24
Don't let the inaccuracies in the on-line synopsis (scathingly detailed by Christenson below) prevent you from acquiring this book. The author has researched and accurately described life in the Klondike/Yukon, and selected great images to accompany his text. The portions dealing with Larss' life outside the Yukon are similarly well done.
Excellent history of the Gold Rush.......1999-07-18
Excellent reading. Highly recommended to all interested in the gold rush. Although some facts may be incorrect, the majority of the book is very well written.
Synopsis corrections and review........1999-02-05
The synopsis is incorrect about some things. Gold was DISCOVERED in the Klondike river area in 1896 -- not 1898. Although prospectors who had been in the Yukon for years learned about the strike very quickly (and staked the best claims pronto), it took nearly a year for word of the discovery to reach the "outside world" (e.g., the contiguous United States) in a way that captured the public's imagination -- especially when the SS PORTLAND landed in Seattle in July 1897 with the now-famous "Ton of Gold" from the Klondike area. The first stampeders arrived in Alaska in the fall of 1897, followed by thousands soon after. Most stampeders went over the mountains into British Columbia and then the Yukon Territory via Dyea (over Chilkoot Pass) or via Skagway (over White Pass) during the winter of 1897-1898. The synopsis is blatantly incorrect that thousands of stampeders "arrived in blinding snowstorms"; this is absolute nonsense. Arrived WHERE? The bulk of stampeders arrived in Dyea or Skagway. While it does snow there, it does not snow all the time. It rains a lot. To imply that all stampeders arrived ANY where along the Klondike gold rush route in "blinding snowstorms" is unnecessary hype -- and simply not true.
This book provides a well-rounded look into the life of P.E. Larss, especially about his life before and after the Klondike gold rush. Photographs have been well-selected to illustrate his craft and the events he was involved in.
Gary Christenson

Customer Reviews:
I don't know if it deserved the Academy Award, BUT ..........2006-05-15
I can say that this is a great script, as I've been reading some pages around the internet and I'll surely buy this book very soon. The dialogue, as well as the whole script, is very realistic, and also very enjoyable.
I can't say if it really deserved the Award, but I can say that this script deserves to be read by every screenwriting fan.
This script deserved the Academy Award.......2006-03-11
Dan Futterman is a genius. It is pure magicianship how he weaves the texts of "Capote" the biography, "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote and whatever other research material he depended on, (not to mention his own witty imagination) into this gripping, thorough, and accomplished story. I am so sorry he got knocked down by the "Brokeback" voters - I've read both screenplays and their source materials and have seen both movies and this is by far the more insightful and entertaining. A must for any student of film writing. I look forward to Dan Futterman's future works. JPN, Bronx, NY

Middle Limit Holdem Poker discusses holdem strategy for the $10-20 through $40-80 levels (the middle limits). The book discusses over 400 hands, nearly all taken from actual play. This extensive use of practical examples has set a standard for poker writing that many subsequent poker books have attempted to emulate.
Customer Reviews:
Good Read.......2007-10-02
The book is quite enjoyable to read and discusses how to play 400 typical hands that arise in everyday poker.
The discussion is very logical and teaches you how to think properly on every betting round. It advises you on how to get the most value out of your good hands and to minimize losses when you are beat. When to value bet on the river, and when to check raise, etc, etc.
I can't say that I picked up a tonne of tips from this book, but it did revise a lot of good principles that I already knew.
To a weaker player than myself you could pick up a lot of good tips.
The rules set in this book can't be applied to low limit games with weak players who play totally illogical, it is written for middle-higher limit games. Thus only 4 stars
Middle Limit Holdem.......2007-03-20
I have added this book to my current libary and think that the book is a fine addition.
Another great book on poker.......2007-01-25
Very good poker book for middle limit. Takes it to another level.
No Frills, Just Sage Advice. .......2006-12-09
If you're somebody who's used to the graphic presentations of cards and hands in many of the Two Plus Two books then you might be initially disappointed upon opening Middle Limit Holdem because this edition will never be confused with a Power Point presentation. However, if you're looking to learn limit or substantially improve your game, then this is definitely the manual for you. The authors created over 300 pages of densely packed information which was broken down into 40 logical subtopics. What they offer here is an old school approach to the game which is both low in reflexive aggression and low in variance, and, for me, anything which decreases variance is totally welcome. I'm not one of those reviewers who thinks that certain styles are obsolete as I find that differing viewpoints enrich my game. Personally, I'd place Middle Limit Holdem in between Ed Miller and Lee Jones in terms of the type of play it advocates. If you don't know limit, then I recommend learning it as increasing proficiency across the strains of poker can only thicken the bankroll in the long run.
BEST EVER~!.......2006-09-29
Having many of the limit holdem books myself ( Championship Holdem, Lee Jones Low limit holdem, Small stakes holdem 2+2 pub. and the best Limit book Weighing the Odds in holdem poker by King Yao) Having just got this book today, I can say that this is the best Limit book ever and the best book on the right thing to do.

Couldn't Have Said It Better.......2005-01-26
The discussion about being at home full time to raise our children is often heated and impossible to resolve in one sitting. Keavy's book addresses the many facets of the choice to come home with unrelenting conviction, yet full of the compassion that proves she understands the sensitivities associated with a move homeward. The reader hears the point, then experiences genuine understanding of the myriad circumstances seemingly in her way (spouse, finances, etc.). After all, she's lived it! Keavy offers sound, principled argument, with love, compassion, AND with creative solutions and rich humor!
The blessing of being home with my children is impossible to share with anyone to the depth to which I feel it. And the grief I feel for moms who want to come home, but don't believe they can is heartbreaking ...until now. Carey Keavy has written what we all want to say to our dearest friends, but we're afraid of risking the friendship. Now all we need to do is giftwrap the book and present it at the baby shower!
Keavy gently restores women to their honorable status as queens of their homes through creative ideas that are easily applied. Also nice is the book's format; it provides time for reflection and self-discovery, encouraging a personal walk through a very sensitive subject.
Carey Keavy has written a book that, hopefully for us moms, will not be the last we hear from her!

Book Description
Oliver Otis Howard devoted his life to the service of his country, both as a distinguished army officer in two wars and as the founder of two universities. Oliver Otis Howard was a graduate of Bowdoin College and of West Point. Being reared in a pious New England (Maine) atmosphere gave him a deep sense of obligation to lead a Christian life, for the good of others and for the development of his own best self. He was often disturbed by the conflict presented him in his dual career in peace and war.General HowardÂ's strong sense of duty to his country brought about his distinguished career of command during the Civil WarÂat the Battle of Chancellorsville, itself a disappointing rout, and at Gettysburg, where he recovered any reputation the earlier defeat might have lost him. Under General Sherman, in the Atlanta campaign, and as a leader of the Army of the Tennessee he won special distinction. In total, Howard fought at the First Bull Run, Fair Oaks (where severe wounds forced the amputation of his right arm), Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The same strong sense of duty made him accept the commission of the FreedmenÂ's Bureau and the promotion of AfricanÂ-American education. Following his service in the Nez Perce Campaign of 1877 he was superintendent of West Point and the founder of Lincoln Memorial University. His greatest service to education, however, was as founder and president of Howard University, where his name and career are held in honor.

The American Way of Death Revisited is almost unforgivably funny. Jessica Mitford's exposé of the funeral industry, a number one bestseller upon first publication, is a model of muckraking--an almost incredible description of how undertakers in the U.S. assault people's souls and wallets. Before her death in 1996, Mitford devoted most of her energy to this revised edition of her masterwork, which zeroes in on funeral prepayment (the chapter is titled "Pay Now--Die Poorer"), the new multinational funeral corporations ("A Global Village of the Dead"), and the Federal Trade Commission's failure to enforce the laws the first edition of this book helped bring about. The book's greatest treasure is probably her shocking and hilarious description of exactly what happens in the process of embalming. Equally impressive, however, is her chapter called "The Nosy Clergy," which describes the collusion and competition between America's undertakers and its preachers. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
"Mitford's funny and unforgiving book is the best memento mori we are likely to get. It should be updated and reissued each decade for our spiritual health."--The New York Review of Books
Only the scathing wit and searching intelligence of Jessica Mitford could turn an exposé of the American funeral industry into a book that is at once deadly serious and side-splittingly funny. When first published in 1963 this landmark of investigative journalism became a runaway bestseller and resulted in legislation to protect grieving families from the unscrupulous sales practices of those in "the dismal trade."
Just before her death in 1996, Mitford thoroughly revised and updated her classic study.
The American Way of Death Revisited confronts new trends, including the success of the profession's lobbyists in Washington, inflated cremation costs, the telemarketing of pay-in-advance graves, and the effects of monopolies in a death-care industry now dominated by multinational corporations. With its hard-nosed consumer activism and a satiric vision out of Evelyn Waugh's novel
The Loved One,
The American Way of Death Revisited will not fail to inform, delight, and disturb.
"Brilliant--hilarious--A must-read for anyone planning to throw a funeral in their lifetime."--New York Post
"Witty and penetrating--it speaks the truth."--The Washington Post
Customer Reviews:
Way of Death Well Worth Revisiting.......2007-05-07
I was thrilled when I found that Jessica Mitford's seminal work The American Way of Death was available once more. It is wonderful, even if a little alarming, to find that it is just as relevant in 2007 as it was when first published in 1963.
Ms Mitford, or Decca to her friends, is inspirational. She combines wit, intelligence and thorough investigation with humour to make this book informative and a joy to read. One cannot help wondering however how we as consumers have been seduced by the promise of 'eternal slumber' for so long.
It is my hope that other works such as The Trial of Dr Spock, Kind and Usual Punishment: The Prison Business and Hons and Rebels will also be revisted.
The American Way of Death should be compulsory reading for all because we will all face the death of a loved one and will have to make decisions in a vulnerable state and because her actuity will ensure you never look at anything the same way again.
REREAD AFTER LIFE EXPERIENCE.......2007-04-04
While I love Jessica Mitford's writing style, I must admit that now that I am older I can say I see the value of a nice funeral. They are for the living and I think even the lowliest life deserves memorial. However, this book does point out things to be wary about and shows the options (many available due to Ms. Mitford's first book).
Wickedly witty, wonderful, and wise.......2006-08-20
I never read the original (1963) edition of this ground-breaking expose of the "death care industry" (to use that industry's own euphemism), so I can't compare the "Revisited" (1998) edition to it. But it seems, since Mitford primarily addresses methods and practices, that much of the earlier work has been preserved. As other Amazon reviewers have noted, it can be confusing when trying to distinguish the "then" from the "now." Sometimes you simply have to guess based on the prices being discussed. But sadly, the reader can't help but realize that in most matters regarding the disposal of our dead, what was true then (the lying to customers about the "necessity" and "benefits" of enbalming; price gouging on caskets; secretive pricing and resistance to providing itemized price quotes and invoices; etc.) remains true today.
Mitford's writing is enjoyable in its own right. Her description of what happens during enbalming is downright poetic and her witty put-downs of funeral directors (who are by turns whiney, self-justifying victims and sly exploiters of the emotionally distraught). She also gives ample evidence of being an intrepid and relentless researcher; she seems to take special delight in being able to quote some of the nasty things funeral directors have said publicly about her personally.
While Mitford gives some good advice on how to plan for the disposal of a loved-one (avoid making pre-need funeral arrangements; know that most funeral homes have a "don't walk" policy which means they will come down in price if you try to walk out during the negotiations; enbalming isn't necessary or required by law; consider cremation without burial; contact your local not-for-profit funeral and memorial society), this is not "Funeral Planning for Dummies." It's more of a critique of American culture on the par with other great social activist writers of the 1960s and 70s, Vance Packard, Ralph Nader, and Tom Wolfe. Read, gasp, guffaw, and generally enjoy!
Jessica Was An Original.......2006-07-01
The late Jessica Mitford enticed me with the original "American Way of Death" in the 1960's. Her graphic description of the embalming process would later inspire me to follow in her work, as a muckracker and consumer advocate. One thing Jessica did was give me an out, if I didn't want to read about the embalming process she directed me to another page. I thought that was a great move on her part because some people just couldn't handle it.
Yes the book takes some focus and you have to want to learn about the subject matter, it's not like reading Mad Magazine. But even in death Jessica endeared herself to so many of us with her wit and wisdom. She opened my eyes, she helped start a movement and she was the inspiration for a whole new generation of muckrackers.
In every industry there are some bad apples. The funeral industry has a few of their own, but I think the point I want to make is that I am not anti funeral, just anti bad funeral director and anti greed.
I believe that Jessica simply wanted to warn us about those who do take advantage of the bereaved and she wanted to educate those of us who were curious about what goes on behind that formaldehye curtain. I, for one, am grateful for the education.
Over-written but Thought-provoking!.......2006-06-11
A verbose, over-written book. Some say the original book was great; perhaps they're right. I don't know. I've only read this one, and through each chapter I kept wishing that the writer would get to the point and lay the facts on the table. I often found myself out of patience and skimming large sections. As for the funeral industry, I came away from the book thinking that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Yes, they'll take you, (and some funeral homes are probably very shady) but the funeral industry is a business too, and a necessary one that not too many of us want to do. And, of course, there are some morticians who doubtlessly see the business as their calling. The book has definitely persuaded me to think carefully about a burial plan and to research the funeral homes in my area. It didn't persuade me to steer away from a pre-need plan. I disagree with the "Buy now die Poorer" philosophy. I certainly don't want to put a $6,000+ bill on my kids. At any rate, this book will make you think seriously about your final earthly bill.

Fascinating Bird Facts & Useful Info for Birders.......2003-09-27
In "The Bird Almanac", ornithologist David Bird has attempted to create a reference volume packed with a wide variety of information that bird enthusiasts of every level of expertise will find interesting and useful. The first 213 pages of this 460-page book is a World Checklist of Birds, which lists all of the world's bird species by their order and includes notation as to their threatened, endangered, or other status where it is applicable. This is followed by 70 pages dedicated to information about the birds themselves. There is a useful chart giving American and British equivalencies in names of birds. There are diagrams, definitions, and many fascinating statistics on bird anatomy and physiology. There are more diagrams and statistics relating to eggs and incubation as well as statistics on mortality and avian diseases. And there are several pages listing truly amazing world records among birds that are sure to make a trivia buff out of you. The next 142 pages contain information about birding, past and present. Included is a Who's Who in Bird Biology and Conservation, information about major ornithological organizations, the birding codes of ethics from both the American Birding Association and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and tips for attracting and feeding birds. There are also extensive listings of bird-watching and bird-banding organizations around the globe, birding hotlines, magazines, newsgroups, festivals, and tours. And there is a glossary of terms in the back of the book. Most of the information in "The Bird Almanac" pertains to North America and Great Britain. The book might have been more aptly named "The Birding Almanac", since it contains more information on birding than about the birds themselves. But the bird information that is here is quite fascinating and has been gleaned from so many different sources that it would be difficult to find elsewhere. Where else could I learn that a peregrine falcon can dive at speeds of 117 mph (wow!), that the largest nesting colony contained 136 million passenger pigeons (scary), or that a group of cormorants is called a "gulp" (funny)? Ornithologists, birders, backyard bird watchers, students, conservationists, and those whose curiosity is stirred by fascinating facts are sure to find something of interest in "The Bird Almanac".
This book belongs in every bird watcher's library........1999-03-22
The amount of information in The Bird Almanac, and the diversity, is staggering, and there is far too much to cover in a short review. The information covers both birds and bird watching, starting with a complete checklist of the world's birds. There is a chart showing the suggested fossil history of birds. The sections on anatomy include not only the traditional bird diagram, but also labeled drawings of the skeleton, digestive system, brain, eyeball, feather tracts, and other systems. There are charts on heart rates, metabolic rates, hearing range, and number of taste buds in various species, and dozens of others in the physiographic section. There are also charts on wing loading, flight speed, daily flight distance, average altitudes of migrating birds, and the ability of birds to transport prey after capture. The mortality section includes charts on the relative occurrence of a long list of diseases and lists of threatened and endangered birds.
There is a section on biggest, smallest, longest, most traveled birds, etc. A section on who's who in bird biology and conservation includes not only the expected names, but important figures less well-known. Do you want to know who was president of the AOU in 1938, or any other year? Who are the recipients of the Elliot Coues Award? It's all here, as well as which teams have won the World Series of Birding and who has won the Duck Stamp competition. There is a section on resources for bird watchers that includes a list of the world's bird watching and ornithological organizations, with addresses, lists of Internet resources, a compilation of the world's bird watching magazines, lists of rare bird alerts, tour companies, CD ROMs, and on and on.
This is one of the most impressive, and useful, one-volume collection of information about birds and bird watching available anywhere. Readers will find themselves delving into it for pleasure over and over, and it will be one of the most frequently used references on the shelf. My copy is going on the shelf next to the Birder's Handbook and the small set of references that are my first line of defense whenever anyone asks a question or I need a quick answer. This book belongs in every bird watcher's library.-Eirik A.T. Blom
