I use it all the time.......2005-06-03
Even though the information in this book is almost nine years old, it is still relevant and useful. People tell me so, and I find myself going back to see what I said when I get questions about label length, typesize, levels of information, or how long it takes to write. Do not buy the other book listed here, Making Museum Labels, because it is out of date (and out of print), and all the good content is in this one.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!.......2002-07-18
I love old photo-history books, and this is one of the best. It shows photographs of the Salt Lake Mormon Temple, taken by various photographers at different times during its construction. Many historic photos are contained here. Also, much of the history of Utah as a Territory can be learned by the photos and the text.
I gained a greater appreciation for the pioneers and their legacy, by reading this book.

Inside Sunset Boulevard.......2005-09-21
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Staggs other venture in to "All About Eve," All About "All About Eve," so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with this book. The way he dissects the entire movie without the result being so cut & dry that you feel like you've spent the whole day reading a phone book. I knew that Mae West was once considered for the role of Norma Desmond, but never knew that version was slated to be a comedy, how right on target they were with that thought!

When this author talks about the making of the film and the interviews with people who worked on it this is fascinating. However halfway through the book he sabotages it by writing as if Sunset Boulevard was the greatest thing ever put on film (it's not) or the best piece or literature ever created. (again..not) He actually gives sunset boulevard credit for inspiring ever other film, play or book ever written. Waaaaayyy too carried away.
Yes it's true that the lines of dialogue and Norma Desmond imagary has had a big impact on our popular culture. He could have just explained this but listing quotes or examples for a few pages was excruciatingly boring.
I wanted to stop reading it at that point. Fortunately the part about the musical (and all that drama) was next so it was worth getting through.
This author obviously loves film and certainly "Sunset Boulevard" and "All About Eve" are classics that are unequaled especially for their writing. However someone should have told this author when reverence becomes obsession. Couldn't they convince him to edit this????
I hope his next novel isn't "The Poseidon Adventure: More important than the Bible" or something!

Although I've never even watched Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder's dark and biting satire/tragedy about the dark side of Hollywood, I have enjoyed reading Sam Staggs' riveting look at the making of -- and cultural impact of -- a bizarre-sounding film about a Hollywood has-been, a dead monkey, and a gigolo who ends up face down in a swimming pool.
Close Up On Sunset Boulevard: Billy Wilder, Norma Desmond, and the Dark Hollywood Dream covers not only the nitty-gritty of the making of the 1949 film, but delves into the long partnership of writer-director Wilder with screenwriter Charles Brackett, the personalities of the stars (Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stronheim, William Holden, Nancy Olson), and even bizarre facts about the supporting cast (who'd have thought Jack Webb, Dragnet's straight-laced Sgt. Joe Friday, was into bondage?).
Staggs also tells the long journey of Sunset Boulevard from the screen to the stage, starting with Gloria Swanson's long and eventually failed crusade to buy the rights from Paramount Pictures and concluding with the almost Byzantine tale of how Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber finally adapted the story of Norma Desmond, Joe Gillis, Betty Schaeffer, Max, and yes, the dead monkey into a musical.
Staggs, who also wrote All About All About Eve, clearly knows his film history and it shows, but his prose is not without its flaws. He blasts Wilder's Stalag 17 as being a "misbegotten" World War II satire/concentration camp comedy. While he is entitled to his opinion about the quality of his movie, he is confusing his terminology, since a Stalag was a military-run prisoner-of-war camp subject to the Geneva Convention, while a concentration camp was under the jurisdiction of the SS Death's Head organization.
However, while I'm still not sure whether I'd ever watch either the film or musical, I did enjoy reading this 2001 expose of one of the landmark films of Hollywood's Golden Age.
A Little Dishy, But I'll Take It.......2003-02-10
Stagg is a very good writer with a very worthy subject. The research is meticulous and the information he presents on the film and the people who made it make this book a winner- just like his companion study of "All About Eve". Some of the complaints here, though, are the same as with that very worthy book. Stagg gives at least equal weight to the film's afterlife, particularly the lightly-regarded Broadway version, as to the mega-classic 1950 Wilder film. And once again, the tiresome emphasis on certain obsessions- camp, divas, catfights, and cross-dressing- not that there's anything wrong with that- do tend to distract from the work as straightforward film history, at least for those of us less titillated by those aspects of the film's following. And finally, Staggs attacks Billy Wilder- the greatest filmmaker of all, in my opinion- with a preposterous theory that Wilder's work after ending his collaboration with Charles Brackett (including "Stalag 17", "Sabrina", "Witness For the Prosecution", "Some Like It Hot", and "The Apartment") doesn't hold up!
What makes this book a must-own anyway is the great information about the film itself- the art-directors, musicians, actors and actresses, designers, and shooting locations, as well as the behind-the-scenes look at Paramount in its heyday. The interview with Nancy Olson is a particular highlight. And if you're into camp, divas, and catfights, change that rating to five stars.
Sunset Blvd deserves better.......2003-02-05
Sunset Blvd is my favorite movie, and I came away from the book terribly disappointed. Despite having access to Nancy Olsen and (the author claims, although I saw no evidence of it) Billy Wilder, as well as many others who knew those involved in the movie, there are few or no details about the making of the movie that haven't been revealed elsewhere, particularly in Ed Sikov's excellent Wilder biography. And a lot is omitted -- for example, though Staggs mentions Gloria Swanson's youthful appearance (as well as a pointless & tactless rumor about it), he doesn't mention why she looked so young -- because Swanson avoided going out into the sun.
The structure of the novel is likewise confused. The first part bounces back and forth between analysis of the movie and the making of it. The analysis is thin and uninteresting. Of the many questions that a serious discussion of the movie would include, one of the few that is asked is: why does Joe Gillis push away Betty at the end? Staggs' answer: because of the production code. Please. The last part of the book is dominated by an extended, boring discussion of the musical made from the movie.
There's a theme to the book, and it isn't subtle: that Wilder's best work needed Charles Brackett. This leads to some strange passages. Staggs has some faint praise for Some Like It Hot but his criticism of Stalag 17 is bizarre (a "misbegotten" mix of comedy and drama?), to say the least, and the comments on The Apartment are worse. Staggs calls The Apartment "dated" (wrong, of course) then goes on to gush about what is possibly the most dated of Wilder's movies, The Lost Weekend. And while there are legitimate criticisms of The Apartment, of all the criticisms, valid and invalid, I've ever heard, "threadbare" surely qualifies as the most inane. Needless to say, in pursuing this theory, Staggs doesn't try to explain Double Indemnity, also made without Brackett. As far as I'm concerned, and I don't think I'm alone, Double Indemnity, Stalag 17, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment are all better than any of the Brackett & Wilder works except Sunset Blvd.
There's decent discussion of movies that followed Sunset Blvd that imitated it, but the glaring omission of Network, with its many parallels to Sunset Blvd, is inexplicable.
All in all, the book just isn't worth the time and effort it takes to read it, let alone the money needed to buy it.

Scary book if you've met the people........2006-12-21
Having known some of the people mentioned in this book it makes me want to get out of the industry, or at least go it on my own. At least now in the digital age that is possible. Hopefully the industry has been cleaned up, but I know a lot of it still goes on.
Stench of Corruption Leads To Reagan's Justice Department.......2004-04-04
Knoedelseder's "Stiffed" is the definitive book on Record/Movie Industry politics. The book reads like a mystery novel, but is all true. The book centers around a bunch of "cutouts," these are records that did not sell due to over supply and were returned to the record company. Cutouts are usually sold to a second party at a steep discount and end up on the
shelves of Walmart for $2.99. The artist does not receive any money, no royalties
whatsoever on these items.
"Stiffed" tells the story how millions of "cutouts" were sold, by way of mafia henchmen
working out of the offices of MCA records in Universal City, California. This is a story
of "follow the money." And a story of how Reagan's Justice department interfered in the
process of trying to prosecute MCA record executives.
At one point in the book, a prosecuting attorney wonders if he is stepping on the toes
of some strange alliance of some sort of MCA/Mafia/CIA/Iran Contra connection as
Reagan's Justice department puts the kibosh on his investigation.
Every student of politics should have this book as a reference book. You will see how
"spin control" is really worked in government, and in a powerful corporation.
I recommend this book highly.
Why the music business can be hazardous to your health..........2001-08-10
The sordid story of how MCA Records got "mobbed up" during music biz mogul Irving Azoff's tenure as company president. Knoedelseder starts off with a powerful narrative, but as it shifts from an industry expose into a Mafia fetish, and then into a trial book, it starts to drag. Still, the first third tells you a lot about the underside of the record business economy, in particular, how "cutout" records and counterfeits get into the stores. After that, you'll learn that mafia strongmen and government prosecutors can both be bad for your health and livelihood, lessons which are always good to keep in mind, even though they're almost self-apparent.

Review of Contemporary Parenting:Challenges and Issues.......2006-08-04
I purchased this book as I needed to write a paper on current parenting and the issues facing parents today. While it was a fairly well written book, I felt it centered around a fairly traditional type of family set-up and even though it embraced divorce and re-marriage, the diversity of parents in the community is far broader than depicted in the book. I feel it needed to be more "rounded out" to truly represent parenting today. having said that, I did enjoy this book and would recommend it as a general interest read rather than a text.

Taking up its position astride the Peking-Mukden [Beijing-Shenyang] railway beginning in January, 1912, the United States Fifteenth Infantry Regiment was engaged in protecting American interests in China. The 1000 man force was especially challenged during the 1920s, those tumultuous years when warlords struggled to gain ascendancy in the Chinese Republic. Although Chiang Kai-shek established a measure of control in China by 1928, the regiment remained in China—partially to counter Japan's increasingly aggressive actions—despite considerable misgivings within and outside of the United States Army as to the feasibility, desirability, and ethical appropriateness of the policy retaining it there. The success of the Japanese in conquering much of eastern China finally compelled Washington to withdraw the regiment on March 2, 1938.
This work recounts and assesses some aspects of the involvement and service of the Fifteenth Infantry Regiment during its fateful quarter of a century in the Orient between the World Wars. Also detailed is the Army's service in those years in general. Many insights are provided regarding the self-perceptions of a key generation of U.S. military personnel deployed there.

HAARP- A CONFUSE BOOK.......2007-01-27
THIS BOOK DEALS WITH CONSPIRACY THEORIES, SPECIALLY CONCERNING THE HAARP PROJECT IN ALASKA. THE AUTHOR SAYS THIS PROJECT AIMS IN CONTROLLING THE WEATHER AND THE MINDS OF THE PEOPLE, BY EMITTING RADIO WAVES IN THE VERY LOW FREQUENCY RANGE. THE AUTHOR MAY BE RIGHT ALL THE WAY. BUT THE BOOK IS QUITE CONFUSE AND MANY FACTS ARE REPEATED. WORTH READING, SPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A OPEN MINDED CITIZEN.
More food for thought.......2006-08-24
Personally, I prefer to follow the subject of U.F.O.'s, but now and again I find an interesting sidetrack... HAARP; The Ultimate Weapon of the onspiracy is one of those interesting side tracks. Jerry E. Smith has shown, once again, that the government can spew out the lies, and almost everyone that hears them will acccept them as gospel.... It's time to open not your eyes, but your minds...this book may help you do just that!
H.A.A.R.P........2006-03-01
Jerry E. Smith presents us first with the facts and details of H.A.A.R.P installation in Alaska. He explains the governments intended purpose and then he starts offering what he believes H.A.A.R.P is and why it is there. Smith tells that it's a little scientific research toy which has the ability to affect weather, wipe out the user's enemies (real or fancied), and if the evidence is true, even control our minds. Some feel that this project is sponsored by a New World Order and this will solve all earth problems of war and enemies. I rather liked this book because it offers you another conspiracy that some government or governments are pondering to take action against each other. Great book!

If "they" run this device full-power, they'll stop at nothing! Most of the reviewers got it right....eye-opening and thorough and immensely readable. I couldn't put it down.
Recommended reading.......2005-12-04
I have to agree with just about everything all the others have said. It was a great read and I really couldn't put it down! It certainly makes you think "what if it's all true?"
There are two flaws with this book -
1) When the author quotes at lenght from sources, sometimes it was hard to determine when the quote ended and when the author's narrative continued, simply because it wasn't always so clear cut. It would have been good if the author or publisher had further indented the quote so that it stood out from the rest of the text, and he should have used quote marks.
2) Where's the bibliography?? Granted, he mentions in the text where he quotes from, but even still he should have added a bibliography so that readers could see where he sourced his material from, should there be a desire to seek further information.
In my student days, if I had neglected to address the above issues when writing assignements, I would have been penalised and accused of plagiarism.
As I said, these were the only problems that I had with a book I found informative and enjoyable to read, even if HAARP turns out to be nothing more than what it's officially claimed to be for. A must read for thos who love a great conspiracy theory or for those who want to know what's going on.
