fashion rendering with color.......2007-01-16
Would have been useful if 98 % of the book was actually in color, not black & white. Was extremely expensive for such a short book printed in this way.
Great Reference Book.......2006-02-22
I just started learning how to render with markers, and this book comes in handy everyday! Great, but simple explanations on how to render different fabrics. Never confusing. A must for every beginning fashion illustrator!
Childish illustrations.......2005-01-19
I bought this book because it had such good reviews, but I was very disappointed with the contents. The title is fashion rendering with color, but most of the illustrations are black and white (very misleading). Plus the illustrations don't look very professional in my opinion. If you have no drawing skills but want to become a fashion designer, then this is the right book for you. Otherwise, don't buy it.
Great for starters.......2004-07-22
Bina Abling's Fashion Rendering with Color is a great source of information and consultation for starters on fashion design, and drawing in general. I've just started fashion design lessons, and I do not have many resources regarding this specific subject in my country, so I turned to Amazon.com to find the best, and I did. I've presented a collection of 30 dolls, using some of the styles on this wonderfull book, and I'm doing great, so I recommend this book to anyone who is starting, or just wants to know how to render with markers, and other materials.
I hope you find this review helpful, and have a nice day!
A Reference to help teach the Designer.......2000-09-08

Book Description
Throughout the Renaissance, artists and poets were drawn to Mary as an icon of grace, purity, beauty, and eternal motherly love. In Glory presents a number of breathtakingly beautiful paintings of the period, including masterpieces by da Vinci, Bellini, Cranach the Elder, Botticelli, and Holbein the Younger. Literary excerpts inspired by the Holy Mother also grace these pages, among them "Ave, Generosa - Ymnus de Sancta Maria" by the Abbess Hildegard of Bingen, "The Nativity of Christ" by Luis de Gngora, and "Ode to the Virgin" by Francesco Petrarch.
This is a volume to treasure. Its ethereal Madonna and Child images, Florentine end-papers, stunning graphic ornaments, and calligraphy-inspired type lend this miniature gift book an intimate, jewel-like quality that reflects the spirit of the Books of Hours-those illuminated manuscripts so cherished in the late Middle Ages. Now, on the eve of a new millennium, this very special collection of images and words is a true celebration of the unique and timeless essence of the mother of Christ.

"I run all the studios," 38-year-old Lew Wasserman boasted in 1951 when turning down an offer to run MGM. Indeed, he did. As president of MCA, the most powerful talent agency of its time, Wasserman gained unprecedented artistic and financial clout for Hollywood's top stars, hastening the end of the studio system. Not that he did it out of the goodness of his heart. The canny, ruthless Wasserman was famous for inventing new ways to increase MCA's percentage, most notably by bundling clients into packages the agency produced for the burgeoning television market--a glaring conflict of interest that finally prompted a Justice Department investigation. Veteran movie journalist Dennis McDougal (author of Fatal Subtraction: The Inside Story of Buchwald v. Paramount) uses Wasserman's career as a case study in how the entertainment industry has changed over the course of the 20th century. He chronicles MCA's evolution from a band-booking business in wide-open Jazz Age Chicago (where persistent rumors about the company's Mob ties began) to a postwar movie and TV powerhouse to a Japanese-owned subsidiary in the 1990s. Seamlessly blending biography, business reporting, and juicy celebrity anecdotes, this is first-rate showbiz muckraking. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Now in paperback-the Los Angeles Times best seller: the acclaimed and decidedly unauthorized portrait of the "Godfather of Hollywood."
The reviewer of the Boston Globe said point blank: "Over the years, I've read hundreds of books on Hollywood and the movie business, and this one is right at the top." As the elusive, tyrannical head of the Music Corporation of America (MCA) until the 1990s, Lew Wasserman was the most powerful and feared man in show business for more than half a century. His career spanned the entire history of the movies, from the silent era to the present, and he was guru to Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, and Jimmy Stewart and to a new generation of filmmakers beginning with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. For more than four years, Dennis McDougal interviewed over 350 people who knew the man with the giant dark horn-rimmed glasses-colleagues, relatives, rivals-and drew on tens of thousands of pages of documents to produce this extraordinary and first-ever portrait of a legend and his times, a book that the New York Times Book Review called "thoroughly reported and engrossing" and that the Daily News called, simply, "a bombshell."

A workout of a good trip through an amazing man's eventful life.......2007-09-08
Fantastically well-researched, exhaustively detailed book that is a treasure trove to anyone lured by the business of Hollywood. There is so much to this book that the inter-weaving of vaudeville, television, film is made to appear seamless, which at MCA, was the whole plan. One learns of Wasserman, MCA, and a whole lot of other trivia, stories and tidbits from the golden era of television and film. Like so many biographies, the latter years of the subject's life become the most scant and in need of some more fleshing out. The author keeps in good balance his personal feelings toward his subject, but is downright toxic with most other individuals in the show business field. Where this near contempt seems to come from is not clear, its viciousness actually conspicuous, but overall it doesn't pull down the enjoyment one gets from a story, heavily-populated with names of so many we've heard so many times before, but now in new settings and with different rules of the game. Lew's rules.
Fantastic.......2007-06-09
If you are only vaguely interested in how Hollywood was really ruled in the 40s - 70s, buy this book. Great insight. A must read for anyone in the industry.
Not my kind of book.......2005-09-25
What is so bad about people starting a business that mushrooms and has some control over an industry and the people it represents? This author had something against Jules Stein, Lew Wasserman, their wives, the employees, you name it-right from the beginning. And he is determined to prove I guess how awful they were and how big and corrupt their business is. I don't think there's any reason for a expose of MCA and the people who ran it. If it wasn't them it would have been someone. Plus, I do not like books that go on and on about politics in government OR within a company structure and I don't care about courtroom hassles and lawsuits. So this book wasn't really for me. I glossed over the majority of it and read the parts about the Wasserman's and Stein's and still wonder if they are as bad as he makes them. Doubtful.

The Best.......2007-03-14
I can provide only a brief review as my time is limited. In a nutshell this is a book that any Luthier would benefit from. It is obvious that Mr. Teeter is a very precise craftsman whom does not take shortcuts. The information presented is the correct way to do whatever needs to be done. I would have to consider this the best of the books on lutherie that I own.
learn to repair a guitar , for understand how to build a new one........2005-08-14
In my opinion this book and the volume naturally 2 represent a guide to face the reparation of the guitar and at the same time to have the necessary notions to be of assistance to whom will purchase' our new tools.
All it takes is building a tool it says Cumpiano, but it also needs to be able to repair it.
Then a good guide to integrate the know how of whom wants to build a guitar.
Excellent the section of the jigs and tools that allows to save many money.
Good book for anyone who cares about their acoustic guitar.......2003-02-03
A good book for the unplugged guitarist. This book will teach you all the basics you need to know to care for your acoustic guitar.
The Bible.......1999-12-28
This is the definitive book on guitar repair. Everyone, from a novice to a seasoned luthier will learn something from this work.

Family Fun.......2007-01-21
We have two pre-teens and love to play games, especially while camping. We had an old Hoyles book and started to go through different variations of poker, and the kids ate it up. Now they each have their own books, and they experiment with different games together all the time. IMHO, this is so much better for them than video games or TV that words can't express my appreciation for this gaming institution.
a great buy.......2006-12-05
I bought this book because, although I love card games, I play pretty infrequently and often forget the rules. This book contains rules and generally clear descriptions of play for an incredibly long list of games. In addition to card games, the book covers many board games, such as Scrabble and chess, and even a few computer games. There is no question that there are books that cover individual games in much more depth, but it's hard to argue with the low price of this volume when it comes to the sheer number of brief descriptions of games that it offers. Highly recommended to have on hand.
Perfect.......2006-06-04
For anyone who plays card games and other popular games, like backgammon, checkers, and chess, this book is absolutely essential. This book is next to the table so whenever anyone plays cards in my family the book is at hand. Any time I have a question on how many cards to deal for a game or how to total points or anything, we use this book. Recommended.
Hoyle's Rules of Games, Third Revised and Updated Edition.......2006-02-26
Great Book of games, only problem is the print is very tiny.
Sine qua non.......2000-12-13
Unless you have been part of a weekly poker game, you may not understand why I like this book, particularly the section on "ethics and etiquette," so much. There really is some honor among thieves. Life really is more fun (and chaos more enjoyable) when we adhere to the letter and spirit of the rules.

The Custer Reader.......2007-10-04
I recommend this book for anyone that is interested in the life of General George Armstrong Custer. I found this book to be the most insightful reporting of his life before, during and after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25,1876. As always anything written by two of the greatest western and Custer historians of all time, the articles by Mr. Utley and Mr. Hutton are excellent. Because of number of articles written by so many authors you get a different outlook on what Custer's life was like during and after the Civil War. I own and have read upwards of forty books and articles on Custer, having started when I was a youngster and I was greatly suprised to find this book later in my life. I don't know how it slipped by in my Custermania. If there was only one book I could say offered a little bit of everything in Custer's life this is it. People tend to forget what a great Civil War hero he was and dwell on his great defeat in Montana that fateful day.
Wonderfully eclectic.......2007-06-08
I am fairly baffled by the negative review below. This book is a great collection of materials -- both primary (19th c.) and secondary (20th c.) -- covering the whole of Custer's life. It's not a comprehensive argument, but a collection of reprints, but many of the things here are hard to find elsewhere. If you have an interest in Custer or the Indian Wars, this is a terrific resource, not only for learning the history but for understanding the mythologies that have come out of it. If there's a fault in the book it is that it could be revised with an expanded edition to include new material. How about it, Professor Hutton? A second edition? Please!
Boilerplate.......2004-04-13
Must us old Custer Buffs be subjected to a rehash of everything we read on the subject dating back to the 1930's and wonder why the same old ground is plowed over and over. I think I know. It makes reputations for PhD's who find it easy to send their graduate students to the library to assemble a (new?) book for them.
It reminds me of Victor Borga's famous act in which he excerpts scraps from the Blue Danube and Shubert's Serendae, plays them, sometimes backward, pastes the scores together, we are told a he goes along, and finally plays the result, which he calls Blue Serenade by Strubert. At least he made no bones about it. Happily it is nearly impossible to compose original music in a library, and unhappily it is easy to appear to compose an original book in a library.
I am waiting for the day that an "uppity" and enterprising graduate student notices that he can use the Library's computers to find relatives of Custer and those who were his associates and do a book about the survivors and what they may be able to find in the attic that hasn't yet been published.
They will have to look for a new "advisor" and perhaps a new school to get their Graduate Degree, but they may get famous in the process.
A Great Collection of Custer Material: A Truely Fun Read.......1999-12-30
This book is unique in that it provides essays on the numerous facets of Custer's life not only by the participants that knew him but from Custer himself including notable historians that know Custer best. It also covers fascinating facts such as Custer's First Stand at Trevillian Station, a Civil War Battle where Custer was surrounded by Confederate Calavary. Hutton, himself a notable Western Historian, is one of a number of well written essays on the Custer Myth including a critical look at how movies and art portrayed Custer over the years representing the pathos of the nation at that time. The change of view from Erol Flynn's "They Died with Their Boots On" to Richard Mulligan's portrayal in "Little Bighorn" takes a well versed explanation. One of my favorite parts of the book is an essay by Hutton where he explains why in movie director John Ford's "Fort Apache" version of Custer's last stand, John Wayne's character Captain York praises the gallant loss of Colonel Thursday (Custer,) who he actually hated, because York "realized that society understands little of the true motivation of heroes but still needs to idealize them as figures to emulate". This is just not an interesting read but a reflection of how changes in society change perceptions of men and history. By the way, its a fun read!

Book Description
Global Values 101 grew out of one of the most popular courses ever offered at Harvard University, in which some of the most original thinkers of our day sat down with students and explored how ideas have made them-and can make us-more engaged, involved, and compassionate citizens. They addressed the topics of war, religion, the global economy, and social change: Amy Goodman, host of the popular radio program Democracy Now as well as the author of The Exception to the Ruler, speaks about the role of the citizen and the media in a free society; Lani Guinier reveals that students' SAT scores more accurately describe the kind of car their parents drive than the grades they will earn in college and shows the way to a more equitable college admissions system; Juliet Schor, author of Born to Buy and The Overspent American, discusses the evolution of personal responsibility in a consumer culture; and Robert Reich, author of Locked in the Cabinet, tells us to get involved in politics because, if you want to see change, you have to make change happen. For anyone who has been moved by idealism and wondered how to become an engaged citizen, this collection offers a range of stories on how progressive ideals can inform, inspire, engage, and ultimately change lives. Other contributors include Harvey Cox, Katha Pollitt, Howard Zinn, Diana Eck, and Naomi Klein.

Great Thoughts Made Accessible.......2006-10-04
This book summarizes the conversations held between Harvard students and some of our most innovative thinkers. The students were asked to read and analyze works by these guest speakers and pose thoughtful questions to them. This relatively small book contains astute insights into politics, the economy, environmental issues, and human rights. It is written in precise, accessible language without over simplifying the concepts which are explained.
Great book - fantastic ideas!.......2006-07-31
I picked up this book not really knowing what it was about and discovered a gem. It interviews great activists and thinkers in an informal, intelligent style that brings out the best in them. Katha Politt's interview was one of my favorites. I recommend this book to any serious students of the world. It deals with the idea of a global morality that passes over religious, ethnic, or racial lines - something crucial in these times of globalization.
Surveys all kinds of issues and connects social change to global values systems.......2006-05-21
GLOBAL VALUES 101 isn't just the title of a book; it's a course which proved one of the most popular ever offered at Harvard University, in which original thinkers sat down with students and explored how knowledge and ideas contribute to better world citizens. From ideas of success and achievement to issues of war, religion and social change, GLOBAL VALUES 101 surveys all kinds of issues and connects social change to global values systems. Perfect for classroom discussion - even at the high school level.

Great Reading.......2006-03-07
"Democracy is what the people do; it's not what the government does" - H. Zinn.
I was amazed that three pages into this book Zinn touched right on the point my Anthropology teacher was making in class the night before.
Any chance to read thoughts by Zinn, Goodman, Chomsky is definately worth every penny.
Fun interviews with global thinkers.......2006-03-02
As a college student interested in the state of the world, this book caught my eye. It is full of interviews with the superstars of current debates about globalization, war and peace, work and family and religion. People like Paul Farmer, Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky, Juliet Schor, Robert Reich, and Howard Zinn. I had read many of these guys before, but what struck me is that they are even more interesting in interview format than in their own books. More spontaneous and funny, and you get to see them struggling with some difficult questions. And they were interviewed by young people (in a super-popular course at Harvard), which means that you get some really wild questions; I found myself thinking at times, 'Who would have been so stupid and rude as to ask THAT?!' This makes for lively reading. My main complaint is that the book only includes 16 of these interviews (plus an introduction), when many more were done in the course and would have been welcome in the book. But it makes for good reading on a long plane flight, when you want to think about the troubles and joys of the planet you are flying over, rather than about the screaming infant in the seat behind you.
