A trip down memory lane.......2005-03-04

When I first looked at this book, it was like going back to my childhood, well, sort of, it was so neat to see posters of some of my favorite films from back then and a lot from movies that I never knew they made. The artwork on those posters is most certainly something to see and admire!!! If you love art and or movies this is THE book to get you won't be disappointed!

Like the other decade books in this series Film Posters of the 70's is a sensational buy. You could either keep it intact as a collection of posters in a book to show and discuss with friends, or cut the book up and actually have a vast number of posters up on your wall. This book is about a third the size of your standard film poster and most movies are full page colour. Any of them would look great up on the wall.

The 70's gave the world Star Wars, Grease, The Godfather, Mad Max, Alien, Taxi Driver, Texas Chainsaw Massacure, Halloween, Rocky and a very blood thirsty shark who changed human perception of sharks for decades to come named Jaws. These films along with other greats fill this book. Roger Moore also took over from Connery as James Bond and Clint Eastwood made a heap of Westerns. Find them here as well.

back in the day this was the best visual present.if the poster was cool then the movie would get Love.a picture can tell a thousand words.and the 70's had the coolest posters and arguable the best films in Movie History.before video tape you walk to the movie house and see the poster and the reaction you felt led you or back the other way.a solid must have book.

Fetch a Big Stick.......2004-07-23

First, I love the title, Bark Softly. I just dig it a lot.

I know that doesn't sound very erudite, but it's true.

Stacy Lloyd's illustrations of her friend Jupiter are extremely eye-catching and fun. I, for one, am looking forward to the comic strip that one of the syndicates would pick up in a hurry. This book is definitely worth a look

Bark softly is a brilliant must have for anyone who loves their pet, and ever wondered what they were thinking.

Jupiter's prose offer insight into the canine mind. Theres not a dog owner among us who won't laugh knowingly at these poems, and illustrations from the dogs point of view. Also- a writing dog... what a great idea!

This really is a very, very cute book. It's pefect for our guest's bed side table ( a feel-good read before turning off the light), the coffee table, any where really. It would make a terric gift for anyone who has a pet. It's one of those books that makes you smile, even if you've had a bad day. A friend told me about it and I'm glad I bought TWO. I'm anxious to see other books from this author; I love her sense of humor. I expect to see Bark Softly in stores all over; it should be there now. Great little book. I recommend it to every one!!!!!

Cliche Story of Black America in the 1950's.......2000-05-30

I kept thinking something new and original would happen, but it didn't. The characters are very stereotpyical; the courage of moving into a white neighborhood (that an aspect of the book deals with) is no different than what one would expect from any work of fiction about Black America. One character relationship I did find interesting was Beneatha and Lena (Mama). They have several interesting interaction/ conflicts over religion and Beneatha's looking for her African identity. Perhaps novel in its time, this work is outdated.

i though that the raisin in the sun was a very informative play. It touched on many themes that touched eveybody. Such as the false pride that money brings. Walter lee's obession with money was clearly stated and illustrated. My expectations were that walter lee would sell the house and obtain the money,but it did not happen. He was a bigger man and realized that his dream of becoming rich was nothing compared to the actulaziation of a sane mind. Walter lee is a man in all of us. He is the common man of today

The reviewer who was confused about the counting of tiles for each player at start of play and use of dice obviously is challenged. The counting is very easy. I sometimes get confused on who should be what "wind" or methods of goulash but building the wall,and starting the game is easy after you do it a few times. The terminology is clear and easy if you have ever played Rummy as a child. Thompson's writing is clear and easy for a novice.

After a shipping problem at the beginning--the set arrived several weeks later than it was supposed to--I am very pleased with what I received. It is everything that I hoped it would be including the great aluminum box it is packed in.

I find it this way, if you learn something wrong from the beginning, you will have to forever unteach yourslef to reteach yourself the correct way to play.
I couldn't get past page 19, step 8 (Dealing) which is the whole reason I bought the book. I understand the first set of 4 tiles for each player but where and how do they get a total of 12 tiles?
Where do the next 2 sets of 4 come from? Then it says: "East ... takes the next tile from the top row..." What "next" tile? What top row? From where? His own or someone elses? From the 3rd layer at 2 and 7 from South's? And where in the world did the tile arrangement illustrated ( presented on the same page) come from (6. Breaking the wall -place on a 3rd layer of tiles at 2 and 7?

It might be great on letting you know what a Pung, Kong and Chow is but then again how am I to know? I mean, if it's obviously wrong in places I can identify, how am to know what else is wrong. 2 dice? Come on, even I know it's played with 3. And the game goes from East, North, West, South. So I ask, "who knows what else is wrong?" I can't rely on this book.

Good Book on Mah Jong.......2007-04-18

This is one of the better books on mah jong, but I'm still left with a few questions that need to be cleared up where she wasn't specific enough. Other than that, great pictures, very clear diagrams and good explanations of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taiwan, and 12-tile Mah Jong. And it's written by a native Mah Jong player, not just a westerner who's been there once or twice; someone who has been playing it for her whole life in China.

Classic Mah Jong.......2007-01-27

There are two excellent books, about the same size and illustration value, which focus on the Classical game, not the myriad of foreign add-ons with their complex & peculiar hands: this one and The Happy Game of Mah-Jong (Paperback) by David H. Li, native Chinese mathematician and scholar (translator & editor of the fine Anelicts of Confucius with its priceless, concise, notes). These fine books together make a superb set. Amy Lo writes with the modern feminist (a misnomer, to be sure) "social statement" English, "he and/or she", &c., ad infinitim, but this affectation does not spoil the book. Miss (Ms., Mrs. ?) Lo and Mr Li cover the same traditional game from different perspective which, together, offer the reader a stereoscopic view which aids understanding. The classic game is complex enough in the motion of congenial sociality without desperate recourse to "special hands" Western variations which became popular in the 1930s with the various coffee clutch set.

Good guide.......2004-12-03

This book describes most of the basic combinations for Asian style Mahjong and I have used it with several classes. There are a few problems that should have been edited but are easily corrected. I like the book because it explains the rules and scoring of Mahjong and provides pictoral references of dealing, set up of walls, and scoring hands.

A Must Have..........2004-02-27

...if you intend to play the game the way the majority of the people on the planet play it. Oddly this is the only book readily available in English that does so. She could do a better job explaining the seemingly arcane scoring system, but for the most part this was a much appreciated addition to my library.

This book has excellent graphics. Good introduction to the 3 variations of the game without all the complications added by Western players using the American/Jewish or Officers Wives clubs.

A group therapy program for treating addiction tailored to the unique needs of women and written by the expert who designed the Women's Treatment Program at the Betty Ford Center. Brief Description: This program for treating addiction is designed especially for women. The program consists of two components: 1) the Facilitator's Guide, written for the practitioner running substance abuse groups for women, and 2) A Woman's Journal, a personal guide for the recovering woman to use outside of the group. This program is groundbreaking in its recognition of the special needs of women in recovery. Programs for treating substance abuse have traditionally been based on studies done with men, but men's and women's issues with addiction often derive from very different life experiences. Women's substance abuse is typically related to psychological trauma stemming from emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse, and any successful recovery program needs to deal openly with women's issues of trauma. The program is organized into four modules that reflect the major areas in a woman's life that need attention for recovery to happen: Self, Relationships, Sexuality, and Spirituality. Everything in this program is carefully guided for easy and comfortable use by the practitioner and the participants. For every group session, the Facilitator's Guide offers a Session Overview as well as an actual script with suggested language the practitioner can use if he/she chooses while running the group. Well-written biography.......2007-10-01

General David Hunter may have achieved more off the field of battle than directly on it. After serving as commander in Kansas, he was appointed Commander of the Department of the South, where, after Ft. Pulaski, Georgia, fell to the Union in April 1862, he freed all the slaves in his department. A gutsy move, but one that Lincoln annulled two weeks later. Undeterred, a short while later he formed the 1st South Carolina Regiment, consisting of former slaves - a move that the Confederacy so detested that it declared Hunter a "felon to be executed if captured." In 1864, after initial successes against Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley (especially at Piedmont), he was repulsed by Jubal Early and driven back into West Virginia. After the war he accompanied Lincoln's body to Springfield and headed the commission that tried Lincoln's conspirators in the assassination. He died in 1886 in Washington.

Edward Miller's biography is detailed and scholarly, without being numbingly so. He is an excellent writer, and his account of Hunter's life is straightforward and competent. A good biography of this forward-looking general.

Now pitching out of the Yankee Bullpen..........2007-07-10

Every now and then, the Union high command reminds me of baseball. There are some generals who seem like middle relievers. They come in out of nowhere, pitch an inning or two and then vanish with little glory or fanfare. Or in the case of a general who has been on my mind these days, he commands an army for a week and then vanishes only to pop up a few weeks later leading a courtmartial.

I'm talking about David Hunter. Hunter's odd career is examined by Edward Miller in this solid but somewhat disapointing biography. Hunter is best known for his command in South Carolina in the Summer of 1862 where he issued orders abolishing slavery (without checking with Lincoln first) and his only other major service was leading raids in the Valley between Siegal's and Sheridan's tenures there. Miller, a VMI man, spends considerable time exploring Hunter's raid in the Valley in 1864.

But look closer. Hunter was one of the few Republican officers in the Old Army and he had ties in Virginia, Chicago and New Jersey. He knew Lincoln on a social level and started corresponding with him in 1860 before the nomination. Lincoln took Hunter along with him on the train ride from Springfield to Washington along with Elmer Ellsworth, John Pope (another Republican from Illinois whose dad was close to Lincoln) and that old bull E. Sumner. Hunter led the guards at the White House and got himself wounded at First Bull Run. After recovering, Hunter went out to Missouri where he kept Washington informed on what Fremont was up to and took Fremont's place in command for one whole week before Halleck appeared. After stints in Kansas and South Carolina, Hunter ended up back in Washington, leading the controversial and highly partisan Fitz John Porter Trial. In 1863 Hunter did not hold a command. Instead Hunter seemed to show up out of nowhere, dropping down on Union generals. He serveed as Washington's eyes and ears, meeting with Grant twice, scouting him out for high command. Hunter also showed up to lead courtmartials on Gen. McCook (from a very prominent family in a key border state), Gen. Crittenden (ditto as his father was the most prominent politician in his state save Henry Clay), dropped down on General Banks to see what's up in the Red River (Banks was a former Speaker of the House and a prominent politician from Massachusetts) and of course ended up chairing the military tribunal of the Lincoln assasians.

Now I can't think this is all a coincidence. Hunter, one of the few Republican generals and a Lincoln protoge, kept on leading politically sensative invesigations where things can get swept under the rug or disposed of. He was very much Linclon's troubleshooter in the army high command. The problem is Miller touches on all of this and fails to connect the dots. He looks at Hunter as a battlefield commander and downplays Hunter's role in the bigger picture. That's what proves frustrating about this book though it certainly offers light on a mostly obscure subject. Miller does an excellent job of dispelling a number of myths about Hunter. Still, while Miller provides a basic narrative, he does miss the bigger picture and his writing is a bit dry. Civil War scholars will profit from the book but it really can not be recomended for casual readers.

Pretty good insight into how the civil war was prosecuted........1999-01-10

Although General Hunter wasn't an abolitionist in the sense that Frederick Douglass or Garrison were, he may have been the highest ranking military officer to have issued orders freeing southern slaves without authority (before the Emancipation Proclamation) because he believed southerners who seceded were traitors and he needed every soldier INCLUDING BLACK SOLDIERS he could get. Hunter's bland history as a "paymaster" during the Mexican war and the Frontier Indian wars is an added bonus, as the job was much more than it seems. Miller's recounting of how Hunter decided which of the homes of "rebel sympathizers" to burn down is also highly instructive of what it must have been like to conduct a "war" in your own backyard, with family names you know. Hunter was a personal friend of both Jefferson Davis and Abe Lincoln and routinely went around normal military channels to make his points. Miller doesn't try to present Hunter as a hero, but an interesting character in the Civil War who was well in front of his fellow Republicans on the issue of freeing the slaves and enlisting them into the war. (They didn't all want to be free, nor did they all want to fight.) The prose is a little dry, but the story carries it along well. Civil War buffs should particularly like this viewpoint of the Virginia campaign. Recommended.
