Book Description
This innovative book presents a fresh view of fifteenth-century Netherlandish art and the significance of its contributions to contemporary Italian art, notably in such areas as oil painting, landscape, and portraiture. Focusing on Florence, a prime center of Renaissance culture, the book explores for the first time the profound impact of Netherlandish works on Italian painters including Leonardo, Perugino, and Ghirlandaio.
Paula Nuttall discusses Italian ownership of Netherlandish paintings in the fifteenth century and the shared artistic concerns of Florentine and Netherlandish painters. She examines in depth the various means by which artistic contact occurred, the growth in demand for Netherlandish art in Florence, and the holdings of the Medici and other collectors. With particular emphasis on the period 1460–1500, when the vogue for Netherlandish painting was at its height, the author shows that the consequences of Italian exposure to Netherlandish art were far more sweeping than has been understood before.

Japanese Designs Coloring Book (Dover Pictorial Archives)
ASIN: 0916144550 |
Book Description
Chinese Cut-Out Designs from Nature, by Ramona Jablonski, is a collection of fanciful flowers, birds, butterflies and many other creatures from the world of nature, authentically drawn from the unique and ancient art of paper-cutting, as practiced by Chinese artists, with simply a knife blade and a block of dyed paper. These designs can be used by craftspeople, students of art, folk art devotees and those who love coloring for its own sake. The designs can be used, much as the Chinese people have used them over the centuries, as patterns for woodcarving, fabric designs, embroidery and other crafts.

Customer Reviews:
Great pictures,lousy text........2006-03-23
The pictures are the main selling point here. Unfortunately the text is shaky . It offers a cursory study of the films of the decade and the writer appears to have used poor research methods as evidenced by a profile he offers on George Kennedy in which he mistakenly states that he played a sadistic prison guard in the 1967 COOL HAND LUKE. Kennedy actually won an oscar for that film and played a slow witted prisoner . The introductory interview with Peter Bogdonovich is also pointless as the director doesn't recall seeing many movies from the decade and shoots down the writer's thesis when he states that filmmakers of the period weren't any more a close knit community than directors of previous decades.
Beautiful and Fascinating.......2006-01-14
Growing up during the 70's, I saw many of these movies but was oblivious to their histories and the prevalent themes of the time. Hogan's writing is elegant and he takes on the subject with a thorough directness suited for any reader. Overall this is a beautiful book, the photos are gorgeous -- it makes me want to rent movies I had long forgotten and introduces me to a number of new ones.
Coffee Table or Serious Reading.......2005-11-15
It's not just a coffee table book, though, if you're in the mood to flip through for fun when you can't find your reading glasses, it will certainly do- but it is a serious text about the why and who of this era or film- odd-ball details, quotes and special pages for the BIG stars (even Charlton Heston, who was a main crush of yours truly before I learned about his politics).
This is the kind of book you can buy for a friend who loves movies or buy for yourself. Either way, leave it out when people come over. You will talk, laugh, and if you're old enough- remember that date who talked through Vanishing Point so you had to go see it again to savor Barry Newman without interference. Highly recommended.

The best compilation from Martin Gardner's Scientific American mathematical games column.......2006-07-19
"My best mathematical and logic puzzles" presents 70 of the best of the brain teaser that Martin Gardner published over a period of 25 years in his Mathematical games column at Scientific American. It some cases references to new developments related with specific puzzles have been added.
Martin Gardner was always especially careful to present in his American Scientific column only new and unfamiliar puzzles that have not been included in classic collections before. Now you can challenge your solving skills and rattle your ego with a compilation of his best mind-benders.
Here is an example of what you can find inside this book (31. The absent-minded teller}:
"An absent-minded bank teller switched the dollars and cents when he cashed a check for Mr. Brown, giving him dollars instead of cents, and cents instead of dollars. After buying a five-cent newspaper, Mr. Brown discovered that he had left exactly twice as much as his original check. What was the amount of the check?"
One of the best things about Martin Gardner books is that a carefully explained solution follows each problem, this way you learn and add new abilities to your problem solving skills, that will sure be helpful in solving real life problems, while entertaining yourself with a good and challenging reading.
The best of one of the best.......2004-04-26
Martin Gardner is the grand old man of puzzles and recreational mathematics. I recommend this book for intermediary and advanced puzzle enthusiasts - beginners might find some of these too challenging.
Intermediary puzzlists will find the pleasures of often working at the upper edge of their skills. The solutions at the end of the book are complete enough so that even those who didn't get it right the first time will get aha insights.
The book is well worth its price even for puzzle enthusiasts. Even I knew many of the puzzles beforehand - classics indeed - but the notes in the solutions often add a twist, a clever solution or a human interest point of view.
The age recommendation of amazon.com - 4-8 years - is probably either an insider joke or a typo. I'd recommend this book to people between 14-80 years of age, and even over.
Puzzles requiring intermediate mathematical skills.......2001-03-26
Marvelous book. I found it better than many books but my friends, who were not that conversant with intermediate mathematics did not like it much. Though this book doesn't require a knowledge of calculus, people who have this level might appreciate the book more. But it has more to do with mathematical 'thinking' rather than mathematics itself.
So get this one if you are good at mathematical thinking and want to challenge yourself. If you are weak in math and would rather read puzzles that require only logic, cleverness, and lateral thinking only, this may not be the one for you.
A Question.......2000-08-16
I just had to question this - the book is rated at a reading level for 4 - 8 year olds, but some of the reviewers mention going on technical interviews and keeping track of columns in Scientific America over a number of years?
Great collection of what it says it is: prepublished puzzles.......2000-06-05
This is a great collection of puzzles from the Master Of It All. However, the book is exactly what is says it is: It is a collection of Martin Gardner's puzzles previously published in Scientific America. That means if you have followed Gardner's column over the years, you will have seen many of these puzzles already. And precisely because they're the "best," chances are you still remember them. Of course my favorite (a monk leaves his monastery and goes up the mountain...) is in there, as are a number of other favorites.

Very informative, an essential guide to the first 2 seasons.......2001-07-11
I bought this book shortly after I began watching "The X-files" during its summer reruns for season three. It was essential in my current understanding of the show. I'm always on the lookout for another X-files book like this one. It offers all the details on only the important things. I bought it ... and have gotten more than I ever hoped or expected out of it. Even now, I still occasionally find myself leafing through it to look up some eposide or mythology fact that has eluded me. I haven't bought another book on he X-files only because I haven't found one that meets my expectations after reading this one.
x-files for the neophyte.......1998-10-26
Having just tuned in to the X-files this summer, I sought HELP in keeping the confusing episode timeline straight. This book has incredibly detailed, fascinating episode descriptions & lots of great trivia. A much funner read than the official website. My only regret is it only goes through Season 3. Highly recommended.
Informative.......1998-08-24
Very informative on the stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, also informative on many episodes, also gives mistakes, and dossiers on Mulder and Scully

Super detailed view of pirate life in general and Kidd in particular.......2006-09-04
Great detailed book about pirates and privateers and how they lived. Written by a true historian with careful attention and loving zest for the pirate life. Want to know what careening really meant? And why they had to do this to protect their ships? Find out here. Want to know about trade winds in the Indian Ocean? Find out here. Comes with a nice index at the back for future reference. A must have for your pirate library.
Avast me hearties.......2000-11-10
A great subject and not much covered except by Daniel Defoe 250 years ago. Good bios of the major characters. Very good explanations of the period, the hows and whys of piracy. Since piracy by its very nature is a secretive profession there isnt much in print either contemporary or historical. The author certainly has done his research, the notes and bibliography section of this book runs over 60 pages. The Madagascar pirates must have been the most successful thieves in history and the author is able to convey to us today just how much booty they managed to steal, billions in todays values. And many of them got away with it. The book is facinating yet doesnt read like a novel nor is it only a dry scholarly tome. Where able the author conveys both motivations and personalities of his characters. A very good read esp, if one is interested in the development of Madagascar.
Book Description
Book-by-book examination of the Bible by pioneer in women's rights movement places events in their historical context, interprets passages as both allegory and fact, and compares them with myths of other cultures. In the tradition of radical individualism, Stanton's attack on religious orthodoxy represents a political treatise rather than a scholarly work.

Interesting despite unsound critical technique(s) used.......2005-07-12
It's an interesting read, and may be considered thought provoking.
Having said that, there are some things of which a prospective buyer/reader should be aware. The authors (as it was Cady's project, but there were a number of contributors) of the critiques in this book used (English) translations of the Bible, rather than using source text(s). Secondly, only "relevant" sections of the Bible were critiqued (ones that made mention of women). In other words, sections were pulled out of the Bible -- removed from their context and sometimes distorting their meaning -- and then critqued/deconstructed. Also, this means that much that should come under scrutiny does not. Lastly, I'm certainly no biblical scholar, but being exposed to the Reformed tradition in Christianity for only about 3 years to date helps me answer some of the questions/arguments posed in this book. I was disappointed in the unsound critical methods used: I had higher hopes. Still, worth a look.
Into her mind.......2004-09-26
I was so excited when I got this book and read it. Even if your only reason for reading this book is to peer into the mind of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, it will not be a waste of your time.
I was always very curious about what motivated her to challenge the other sex's views of her sex, what she thought of the Bible and God, what reasons she had for being a feminist, whether she hated men, etc. This books answers so many questions about her, because it is written by her and over 10 other women. These women respond to every place that the Bible mentions women, in the form of an essay.
Whether we agree or disagree with her, we as women are endebted to ECS's, because her views and beliefs and efforts are what made us free.
I feel that many men (and women) even today do not understand the women's right movement; many are still trapped under the old views about women, or are ignorant of how ECS and other feminists from the 1800s shaped the liberties of women today. And this causes problems between the two sexes. The only way to understand the women's movement, and the people behind them, are to read their own words.
