I thought that this book sheds a different kind of light on the how and why, of design. Written by a true master that understands every aspect of what he did, and why. He delivers the message as astutely as he designed. Read it, you will not regret it!

Where do we go from here?.......1998-11-24

I love the simplicity of the book which is a consistent reflection of Paul Rands style. However, I can't help but question his analyzation of so-called primitive art and design. For example he compared early african art to that of childrens art (in a positive way). And while he attempted to praise the art, I think he only succeded in confusing it. African art as well as other artistic expressions by early cultures cannot be analyzed by the same Western eye that we use to scrutinize our own creations. While we would like to think that we understand other cultures the fact is we can't Unless, we are personally involved with that culture. I don't think Rand understood this. He seemed pre-occupied with the mathematical beauty in all the example work, but I think for Early cultures it went way beyond mathematics. Furthermore, while I love his passion for design, I can't help but wonder if he speaks about Design as Art or design as a COMMERCIAL tool. Certaintly, Clients are more concerned with the Marketing component of design as opposed to how beautiful it looks. This is not to say I am against good design. But as more designers confuse Graphic Design with Personal Art, I find that most work is being designed with other designers in mind (and awards) as opposed to the client and his/her customers. Rosser Reeves had the same argument about Copywriters wanting to write elegant prose instead of Sales material. Rand is a great. This book is definitly a must read. But I wonder how many people go along with his philosophies simply hecause of who he is.

Why, it's fantastic!.......2000-07-26

Who would have guessed that such a simple, straightfoward musical would be the longest running show in New York history? Read this copy of the libretto, and you'll know why. The show is very simple and very honest. It has drama and lighthearted comedy in just the right amounts to create what is, in many ways, the perfect musical. This volume also contains lots of extra information about the show, including the lyrics to a new song written for the show in its later years, and a number of photos. The music is missing, of course, but even without the OCR to the show, you get a great sense here of what makes The Fantasticks so, well, fantastic.

It never fails to amaze me that Jones & Schmidt were capable of such powerful poetry while still studying for their masters degrees. This thesis show is a powerhouse of simplicity and a panorama of minimalism. Sound oxymoronic? It is. The show is so disceptively simple, but the stories it tells are universal, and they are guaranteed to ring true for even the most tarnished audience member. One read, and it won't be hard to "try to remember" this show for a long time!

This is one of the most wonderful musicals ever. It has a wonderful story and plot but the best part about it is the music. The music is absolutely FANTASTICK! The musical contains a wide variety of songs, each with its own mood and purpose. There are funny and amuzing songs, ominous songs, loving songs, wishful songs... there's something for everybody. I first saw the Fantasticks in New York and fell in love with the music. I have almost all the songs completely memorized and I am working on putting a few of the song into my audition repertoire. This is music that every true musical fan should have. Its brilliant.

An amazing look at the long life of The Fantasticks........1998-09-02

It has been two years since I was first introduced to The Fantasticks. Ever since I saw the show I have been captivated by its remarkable story, lyrics, and music. It was only recently that I read this 30th anniversary edition and truly found out how amazing this show is.

Tom Jones' personal account of The Fantasticks shows the reader what exactly goes in to a show before it actually debuts. The first section "Try to Remember" is well set as the first chapter of the book. The reader will benefit more from reading this chapter before the show.

The third section (the second was the libretto) is a look at the actors really shows you the life of the longest running Off-Broadway show.

It was delightful to read and look at. Since I also enjoy reading movie scripts- it's even better to SEE what's going on in the movie at that time. Plus, there's a load of deleted scenes, and fantastic movie pictures as well. This is a MUST for all MirrorMask fans.

If I had to sum up MirrorMask in one sentence, I would describe it as 'an allegory about Individuation'. This was Jung's term for the process by which we integrate or align the personal with the universal consciousness and ultimately become whole.

If Neil's script seems lacking in emotional fluidity at times, it is probably a deliberate mechanism to convey the varying degrees of emotional shutdown that people experience when transitioning between developmental states.

Just as with Alice In Wonderland, Snow White, Peter Pan and The Wizard Of Oz, the story involves a young female's transition to womanhood and all of the pantheon of archetypal combatants that invokes.

While Dorothy needed the mechanism of the ruby slippers (the moonblood of the Sacred Feminine) to get back 'Home' and restore order - the sacrificed Feminine - it is the magic of the MirrorMask itself that enables the healing of spiritual wounds (identity/alienation) in Neil and Dave's visually striking masterpiece.

The bottom line? Oz is Kansas.

Lord knows when I'll get to see the film, but having read this stunning 'guide', I can't wait, damn it. Ten stars.

Helena in wonderland.......2005-09-22

Writer Neil Gaiman has crafted dozens of dark fantasy books and graphic novels over the years; the only thing to expect from him is stuff that is a bit twisted and bizarre. In a good way, that is.

But in 2001, he embarked on a different kind of creative journey: Penning "Mirrormask," a Carroll-ian fantasy movie, directed by book illustrator (and Gaiman collaborator) Dave McKean. While the movie isn't yet out, the screenplay is a lavish affair with concept art, photos and background information.

Helena is a bored young girl in the circus, wanting a taste of real life. But then real life strikes: During a performance, her mother falls seriously ill and is hospitalized. Unhappy and directionless, Helena falls into another world -- a bizarre place full of masked people, griffins, orbiting giants and malevolent shadows.

She is soon told by the Prime Minister that an evil princess (who resembles her) has stolen a magical charm, sending the Queen of that city into a coma -- and her city into chaos. With the comically mercenary Valentine at her side, Helena finds herself sent on a dangerous quest to find the charm -- the mysterious Mirrormask.

Half of "Mirrormask"'s appeal is the eerie presentation, along with an archetypical heroine and opposing light/dark kingdoms. And it's a credit to both McKean and Gaiman that their screenplay is a good read on its own, letting eager fans know what to expect when the film finally sees the light of day.

What sets "Mirrormask: The Illustrated Film Script" apart from most screenplays? The fact that Gaiman and McKean included storyboard pictures with the dialogue. It's not easy to visualize what's happening in a movie just by reading the script, and so the storyboard images let the readers follow the dialogue more easily.

And of course: the photographs -- weird ones, usually patched together with surreal CGI, computer animation and wild makeup. Valentine's masklike face in particular is odd, but strangely convincing. There are even some behind-the-scenes photographs, including bluescreen shots and faux-aged pictures of anti-Helena.

To add to the wealth of information, the correspondence between McKean and Gaiman about this film, abbreviations and grammatical errors intact. "Fantasy stories rely on cliche too much, fairy stories about fairies I think are pointless, fairy stories about the people who need to believe in fairies I think are fascinating," McKean writes in one letter.

"Mirrormask" seems to be what one would expect from a Gaiman creation: Weird, strange, and surreal, yet also funny and touching. And for anyone anticipating the film, "Mirrormask: the Illustrated Script" is a must-have.

excellent book idea! Whole script and storyboards........2005-08-12

This is a great book, not similar to illustrated graphic novel of McKean or a text book from Gaiman but this book has entire script and storyboards of the film. What a great share what a great book idea thanks. Very useful source for both cinema and design students or professionals beyond to get taste for makin of this magic film.

The World of Magic.......2005-07-08

First of all, i must say that i'm a big fan of fantasy, horror, and sci-fi book's, film's and graphic novel's.
As a painter, short stories writer, and graphic novella's author i may say that the Mirrormask is a great ''drive trough'' the world of magic, fantasy, and imagination of today's acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman, and my favorite painter, photographer, and one of a kind artist Dave McKean.
I'll make this short.
All of you that are interested in a way of making a good scenario, and a great storyboard, you SHOULD have this amazing book!
It helped me to see and to realise how to think, and how to make my own ideas come true!
Dave McKean is one of my favorite artists, and trust me, you'll like this book!
Also, i want to recommend you his earlier work, such as Violent Cases, Black Orchid, and Batman - Arkham Asylum.
So much about this now, and be well my friends!

each page appeared to be to busy, which made me exhausted, not motivated for whatever of interest on that page. there were not going to be any hidden secrets, so the art work and written contents could have been played with more to see how to catch a readers eye , who had been there and done that. i think with some help on these things the book will be of value to someone with back conditions.

Must read before treatments or surgery.......2004-09-13

I've purchased this book and her New Back in Action book as well. Both are very good; these books should be issued by doctors to every sufferer of back pain. Few if any doctors or chiropractors provide a thorough explanation of what causes back pain. Sarah Key's books are among the most thorough and informative sources on the subject. I only wish I had purchased them years ago. Before you have endless treatments let alone surgery, I recommend reading this book to 1) fully understand the mechanics of the back, 2) educate yourself on the causes of back pain and 3) learn some helpful exercises that may help you reduce or eliminate your back pain on your own.

Out of the Wilderness.......2004-09-08

After years in the wilderness I found Sarah Key and the Back Sufferers' Bible. I have been to hell and back with my back pain ....spent the last 2 years with a string of neurosurgeons, PTs, and Chiropractors and none has taught me more or helped me more than this book. Sarah explains how the back works (with great diagrams) and how it goes wrong and concrete steps to help yourself. I had a spinal fusion 10 months ago and have had a tough recovery. None of the exercises my PTs gave me provided the relief that Sarah's did. Following her protocol I had significant relief in a matter of days. It left me wondering where the hell has the rest of the "back world" been....she's got the answers. Noone else I have encountered gave me as much information or specific help....and she did it all the way from Austrailia! I am a true believer in her program and give this book and her methods my highest recommendation.

I have had a problem with my sacro-iliac joint, where the pain permeates into the lower back. I tried the exercises from the book which included using the backblock, for months. It did absolutely nothing for me.

A breath of fresh air.......2003-02-12

I just wanted to say thankyou for the back sufferer's bible. I have sufferred from minor back problems for years. Last year it got a lot worse and I spent many painful days getting many different opinions from doctors & trying to understand my problems. Unfortunately I didn't "discover" the back
sufferrers bible for many months. When I finally did (4 weeks ago) it was like a breath of fresh air as it really agreed with many of the feelings I had about my own problems and clarified a whole lot more. I sufferred from what was diagnosed as an L4-L5 prolapse and spondylolysis of L5, but feel that this is not quite correct or not the whole story. I was recommended for
surgery due to sciatica and loss of feeling in my left leg, but managed to avoid it by getting a second and third opinion. I am steadily getting better via self help, but have some way to go yet.

Walker's infantry division in the Confederate army was the largest body of Texans—about 12,000 men at its formation—to serve in the American Civil War. Walker's unit remained, uniquely for either side in the conflict, a stable group of soldiers from a single state from its creation in 1862 until its disbandment at the war's end. Richard Lowe's compelling saga shows how this collection of farm boys, store clerks, carpenters, and lawyers became the trans-Mississippi's most potent Confederate fighting unit, from the vain attack at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana, in 1863 during Grant's Vicksburg campaign to stellar performances at the battles of Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Jenkins' Ferry that helped repel Nathaniel P. Banks's Red River campaign of 1864.

Lowe evokes the trans-Mississippi theater, with its battles in the hills, prairies, and swamps of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas—vitally important and influential in the war's course even though outdazzled by eastern landmarks such as Gettysburg and Antietam. The author makes vivid the growing challenge that confronted the Confederate cause in 1862 and gave rise to the Greyhounds. Using a database of information collected on 2,200 soldiers, he calculates that Walker's enlisted men were somewhat older, more likely to be married, and more often heads of households than their counterparts, both Rebel and Yankee. Their financial assets and casualty statistics mirrored those of Texans generally, casting doubt on the slogan "a rich man's war and a poor man's fight." And although the Confederacy may have erred in not sending the division east of the Mississippi River to fight in larger campaigns, Lowe's book yields the poignant conclusion that the Greyhounds were content to remain where they were to shield their families from an invading enemy and the devastation of war.

Another great book to purchase for those in the History field, Political Science(Government), or just a nut like me that is proud of America and wants to know more. This book and the book on the constitution are great little books to carry and to learn from, great for school aged children and those that have graduated to higher learning. I keep this little book in my car. It's perfect for those times when you are waiting in line at the drive up bank, waiting for an appointment or any other occasion when you have a few minutes to spare. What better way to pass 5 minutes than to read a short biography or two about our founders?
