This is modern Galois Theory, straight from the horse's mouth! Galois Theory is taught today using field extensions rather than by actually solving polynomials, students also learn to view a field extension as a vector space over the smaller field; both of these things were pioneered by Artin. The book also has short, clear proofs of all the main theorems. The only problem is that there are no problems to work on, so I have to say this is only a good reference for Galois Theory.
Succinct exposition of modern Galois theory by a pioneer........2003-11-13
Emil Artin's short book gets a mention in most texts on
Galois theory. It is very short - only 60 odd pages. Yet
it is a very clear, complete and readable account of the
essential elements of modern Galois theory. It is based
on lectures he gave over 50 years ago but you might think
it was written only yesterday and is comprehensible to
anyone familiar with current abstract algebra terminology.
And the price makes it a bargain. There are no worked
examples, exercises or index here.

A friend of mine has a maxim: The shorter a math book, the more likely I am to read it. Artin's Galois Theory is certainly that. It is also an example of Artin's wonderful mathematical style. Gian-Carlo Rota, who took classes from Artin when he was at princeton, said that Artin's proofs were perfect, as though he had gone through all the available proofs to find *the* proof and that was the one he used. Rota felt that this left the student at a disadvantage in that he didn't know about the effort that went into the proof, nor why it is beautiful. I disagree: the proofs in Galois Theory have a certain indescribable beauty to them which left me awestruck at their simplicity. They seem to have all the requisite attributes (as laid out in Hardy's A Mathematician's apology) to be considered beautiful. These notes are by no means complete, but I would suggest them as a suplement to another treatment of field theory (for example, Dummit and Foote or Morandi even though they were based upon Artin's treatment).
Okay if you are interested in matehmatical "classics"........2001-05-14
I agree, to some extent, with the recent two reviewers: Nobody can deny that Emil Artin was a great mathematician, having done a very good job in algebra. That does not necessarily mean his textbooks should be praised *ad infinitum*. I understand some classics remain valuable for an incredibly long period of time ("Morse theory" by Milnor is one of such landmarks that comes into my mind), but I feel scheptical if this one deserves that claim. This book is okay if you are interested in his writing style of many years ago, but not quite so if your main concern is to study Galois theory (or algebra: that makes no difference for that matter) efficiently and effectively. In that case you should turn to more modern textbooks like Cohn ("Algebra" published by Wiley.)

This is a jaw-dropping volume of research from the world's foremost authority on the Monkees, painstakingly assembled and magnificently presented. I can hardly believe it exists! The only book it can be compared to is Mark Lewisohn's THE BEATLES RECORDING SESSIONS, which has (incredibly! impossibly!) been allowed to go out of print.
The lesson, Monkee fans? Grab it while you can. You know who you are.
The Richest Documentation Yet On The Monkees.......2006-04-12
The Monkees remains a lightning rod in music annals. Condemned as a "manufactured group" by certain music types even today, the group's following has never wavered, and the last twenty years has seen not only a revival of interest in The Monkees but some spirited rebuttals to the condemnation of the group's conception and the quality of their music.
Music historian Andrew Sandoval fills in multiple gaps with his day-by-day chronology of the group from their earliest struggles as individuals to make a name for themselves in show business on through the five-year-period within which they were brought together, created the television series that not only remains for the most part fresh and funny 40 years after shooting commenced but also accelerated the development of the music video concept, engaged in the creation of hit music, fought to assert creative control of the music, reached their artistic and financial peak, and then began the slow process toward eventual breakup.
A key to the book's completeness is that it wisely includes Michael Nesmith's First National Band period of 1970, for it best displays how much of a backbone Michael Nesmith truly was to the group, both in terms of leadership and also in terms of musical strength.
The book goes into perhaps the strongest detail yet on the pivotal January 1967 showdown with Don Kirshner and Colgems lawyer Herb Moelis in which an infuriated Nesmith punched open a wall and snarled "That could have been your face." Don Kirshner is allowed to tell his side of the story, both in terms of this incident and his overall involvement with the group, and it becomes clear that even 40 years later the incident still stings him. It also shows the truth in Micky's analysis at the end of the book - that The Monkees had undeniable charm and chemistry, but that it was like a nuclear fusion reaction; under the control of a conductor positive energy was channelled, but if left unchecked it could spiral out of control.
In addition to Micky, Mike, Peter, and Davy, the book features extensive quotes from many others involved in the group's heyday, including some quotes from Mike's longtime bassist John London before his death in 2000, and also from Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, creators of such hits as "Last Train To Clarksville" and "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone." There are also quotes from Mike's FNB drummer Johnny Ware which add insight into the short but artistically fulfilling life of Mike's post-Monkees act.
Chip Douglas also gives insight into the artistic battles that simmered even during the period of 1967 following the group's victory over Don Kirshner, going into detail about some of Peter Tork's recording antics and also detailing some of his disagreements with Mike.
Also very noteworthy are pieces and photos of The Monkees' and their closeness with The Beatles, who respected the Monkees as performers and often jammed with them when they visited London.
The Monkees' success proved important in pop music history and Andrew Sandoval shows how.

This book is as excellent as the game itself! It has INCREDIBLE art from the game, stuff that was drawn by the creators that shows the early stages of the game to the finished product, it has weapons pictures and character pictures.
The walkthrough here is one of the better ones I've seen. It is quite extensive and well explained! Anyone can follow it when stuck or all the way through if they like. It shows you tips and tricks most wouldn't find out for themselves if a casual gamer etc. It is a GREAT companion to the game!
One Great Leap for Mankind..........2004-01-28
The Sands of Time is a puzzle game with few real puzzles. Instead the problem to be solved is architecture - how one accomplishes the apparently impossible task of getting from on place to another. You have a simple palette of actions from which to draw, and are often leaping into space with a wing and a prayer. For the player who runs up and down walls, bouncing from point to point there is an exhilaration that can only be compared with flying.
Unfortunately, for the beginner faced with a monumental task there can be a lot of frustration. The game provides a quick flash of hints, and then you are on your own. Thanks to the built in replay facility one can try different solutions until the answer materializes, but every once in a while the right sequence simply eludes us.
This guide is for those moments. It provides a lucid, brief walkthrough with illustrations and maps. While the maps are sometimes hard to read, and the screen shots too tiny, I only found one play where the suggestions just didn't seem to gel. I had to resort to random action, but eventually did find that the guide had been correct, but elusive. I like the guide's style, which focuses on what is necessary and sufficient rather than trying to be a souvenir.
If you are having trouble, or just want to get the Prince aloft as quickly as possible, this is the resource for you.

Hailed as a great success, welfare reform resulted in a dramatic decline in the welfare rolls--from 4.4 million families in 1996 to 2 million in 2003. But what does this "success" look like to the welfare mothers and welfare caseworkers who experienced it? In Flat Broke With Children, Sharon Hays tells us the story of welfare reform from inside the welfare office and inside the lives of welfare mothers, describing the challenges that welfare recipients face in managing their work, their families, and the rules and regulations of welfare reform. Welfare reform, experienced on the ground, is not a rosy picture. The majority of adult welfare clients are mothers--over 90 percent--and the time limits imposed by welfare reform throw millions of these mostly unmarried, desperate women into the labor market, where they must accept low wages, the most menial work, the poorest hours, with no benefits, and little flexibility. I read this book over the Christmas holidays and it was definately a worthwhile read. This book puts a face on the issue of the poor in america, and helps to explain the feminization of poverty as well. Whether some of you belive it or not, this could happen to you. A definate must read for all women, and a great gift for the college bound.

I picked up this book to do a research paper on the topic of welfare reform. This book has been both enlightening and frightening in its information and the arguments put forth by the author. The research is amazingly thorough and well documented throughout the text. Hays points out many contradictions concerning the goals set forth by the Personal Responsibility Act.
The bottom line is that we are living in a society that is still grossly unequal in terms of sex, race, and class. I especially appreciated the realism that the ideals and provisions of welfare reform fall far below any sort of real hope of mobility in terms of the demands of an evolving global market place.
This book is not just about welfare reform; it is indicative of a society that we are becoming - one that undermines the care of our nation's children and welfare for struggling families and most especially the plight of single mothers.

Ignoring reality.......2004-04-26
This book critiques welfare reform by giving the reader a teary eyed story about people who have no money and have lots of kids to raise. Yet this argument simply ignores the facts. First of all this book ignores personal responsibility. How bout people on welfare taking responsibility for having unprotected sex and having ten kids without ever bothering to get married. How bout taking responsibility for not having a job. People that don't have jobs and can never find work are in that situation because they actually work to not find work. Most people that are unemployed love being unemployed and they love living off the government dole and being lazy. And this book simply ignores this fact. This book tries to make everyone feel so bad for people that are basically in a situation they themselves caused. Rather then trying to exhort these people to learn a new skill and not have as many kids instead this book blames the government because the government has dared to say `if you don't find a job in five years we might decrease your stipends'. Amazingly enough in countries that don't have welfare people manage to find work. If welfare ended tomorrow all these people would go get jobs, in fact it is welfare that pays them not to work and discourages them from having a honest job.

"Reform" Sucks.......2003-06-07
This book will prove enlightening to anyone who is concerned with the consequences of "welfare reform." Flat Broke, while "putting a face on" reform, provides the analytical tools with which to understand the crux of the welfare dilemma. The dilemma is not unique to those women who must turn to public assistance, it is one faced by all those that live within American culture. Work and family. We all know the struggle - at least in some form.
Hays does an excellent job illustrating how welfare recipients DO pursue mainstream ideals, DO foster mainstream American ideals. . . but are systematically denied the ability to live up to our cultural ideal of middle class. As always, those at the bottom bear the brunt of our cultural contradictions more than any other social group.
