vintage paperdolls.......2007-01-09
Cute paperdoll patterns that bring back memories of life in the 1950s and the glamour stars of those days.
Gorgeous Stars.......2005-03-16
The Glamorous Movie Stars of the Fifties Paper Dolls by Tom Tierney is a wonderful work with each lady lovingly portrayed by the artist. I especially loved Elizabeth Taylor in her famous silk slip from "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". She was at her most stunning in that film and the doll captures her beauty perfectly.
From the point of view of a paper doll enthusiast, I was disappointed that most of the dolls are fully clothed so that only their faces show through a hole in the costume. As a child I used to add costumes to my Marilyn Monroe paper doll by Mr Tierney, and it was a great way to improve my fashion illustration skills. Unfortunately, any budding illustrator today won't be able to do the same with the dolls in this book (eg Audrey Hepburn, Susan Hayward, Jane Russell, etc).
Also, I'd love to see whole books dedicated to two of the greatest stars featured in this collection: Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.
This is a lovely set of illustrations, but as far as paper dolls go, I preferred Marilyn Monroe, Galmorous Movies Stars of the Thirties and Glamorous Movie Stars of the Forties.
Not at all antiquated!.......2003-11-21
Paper-doll-making ninja Tom Tierney returns with another masterpiece: Glamorous Movie Stars of the 1950s!
Like all his other gorgeous renderings (Pope John Paul II, Grace Kelly, etc.), Tierney's two-dimensional figurines are delightful. The likenesses are spot-on, and the clothing options (flowing ball gowns, sultry set costumes) are divine! Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor...they're all here!
(You may ask why Marilyn Monroe isn't included...it's because she's got a whole book to herself!)
Being somewhat of a collector, I purchased two copies of this gorgeous book ...
susan hayward....WOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-09-17
tHE ARTISTRY IN THIS IS GREAT!Miss Hayward is perfectly captured in a very beautiful doll.Doris Day and especially Audery Hepburn
are perfectly drawn.Miss Reynolds and Jane Russell are outstanding, with Jane in the killer Red dress from Gentlemen prefere Blondes.Where's Marilyn is my only complaint. But each inclusion here is great.
Glamour in the 50s!.......2001-06-13
I loved this book - these are truly the most glamorous movie stars of the 1950s & I love having this in my collection.

There's a lot of hidden meanings in this comic book. It talks of the terrible things the government put on the world (machine against man type thing) The character, Atomika, sort of lives through the past wars which is so cool! It's done in a dark and gruesome way. I don't enjoy reading history books, but I love this comic.

Other Books.......2007-09-04
This is not a bad little tome.
Scalzi takes a pretty even-handed look at the movies, giving a literature background to start with, an introduction to films, and then listing his 50 important selections.
He also takes a look at tv, music, and important figures or characters from the various productions. He even mentions novelisations which he thinks are good (ET, and Buckaroo Banzai) and the Abyss, which I don't remember reading if I did, but I agree with the first two, and am still looking for a copy of Buckaroo.
Also a section on non-English films.
If you are quite familiar with all this already, you don't need this book, as you will have seen all of them and know most of it, barring the odd Mexican wrestler movie perhaps. Even so, it would be a useful reference, and certainly excellent as an introduction to those that are new.
It is also an annoying odd square shape to some degree.
Worth owning, but get his other books first........2007-06-14
I really like John Scalzi's work.
If you haven't read Old Man's War, you are missing a treat.
This is not a bad guide, and Mr. Scalzi's humor and wit come shining through. The edition I recieved is full of typos that seem pretty glaring, and I found them extremely distracting.
I enjoyed this book very much overall, but don't make this your frist Scalzi purchase. Get Old Man's War first!
Pretty good source, but not as good as it might have been.......2007-06-08
I picked this one up because (1) I'm a fan of Scalzi's fiction and (2) I'm a fan of science fiction films from way back. It turns out to be a very useful combination of obscure information, literary and cinematic theory, film history, and pure, unadulterated fandom. (I knew I was in the right book when the author paused at the very beginning to explain the difference, to fans, between "SF" and "sci-fi.") He selects fifty films from the past century as his "Canon" and discusses them in detail, pointing out the many interconnections and derivations, and tossing off scores of highly quotable lines; of _Buckaroo Banzai_ (one of my own favorites), he comments, "Don't be ashamed to laugh at this movie; just be aware of what that laugh says about you." But he also provides a "warp-speed" history of the science fiction cinema, which allows him to give brief mention of many other films, both good and bad (and very, very bad). Likewise, there's an idiosyncratic chapter on the "faces of sci-fi film," crossover films, the pseudoscience that backs them, and the state of SF film-making in various countries. There's a great deal of good stuff here and I began making a list at the very beginning of films I hadn't seen that I wanted to (not many of those) and those I'd seen in the past and now wanted to see again (lots and lots of those). It's a shame, then, that the copyediting was so poorly done; it's difficult to find three pages in a row without a horrendous typo, misspelling, or apparent missing word. (And, no, you don't capitalize every single word in an italicized title.)
Fun, light reading.......2006-11-11
This was a generally fun book. It is not designed to be read cover to cover, but picked at. It's lighthearted and I think it is pretty fair to the movies it covers. It also notes which movies (like Blade Runner) were very influential on those that followed. If you're a big science fiction fan, you probably won't learn too much that's new, but you'll learn some, and you'll have fun.
Decent if imperfect reference book.......2006-09-03
To someone unfamiliar with the genre, science fiction movies can appear to be a collection of awful movies that rely on little more than cheesy special effects. To some extent, it's true: to paraphrase Sturgeon's Law (he was a sci-fi writer), 90% of science fiction is garbage, but 90% of everything is garbage. There are plenty of lousy science fiction movies out there, but there are also some real gems.
The Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies is a decent, though not perfect, reference book about these movies. It starts with a brief history of science fiction literature and then gives a history of sci-fi at the cinema, from the early silent days through the serials of the 1930s to the "golden age" of the 1950s to the darker works of the 1970s to the special effects driven movies of modern times. Essentially, however, the history of sci-fi films can be divided into two periods: Before Star Wars and After Star Wars.
The Guide also provides what the author, John Scalzi considers to be the key 50 movies. As he admits up front, you may disagree with his choices as I certainly did, but many of his choices are solid ones: choices such as Blade Runner, Star Wars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey have to rate on the list of anyone familiar with the genre.
There are also sections on the faces of science fiction, the locations of science fiction and science fiction movies produced around the world, as well as a couple other sections. While not comprehensive, the book doesn't really neglect anything truly significant either. For a reference book, however, we do get a lot of opinion, and for a book that seems to be well put together, there are lots of typographical errors. This is not a great book, but it is good enough (maybe a low four stars) and for an introduction to these movies, it is more than adequate.

U gotta have this if you luv Outkast!!!.......2005-05-10
I always been a fan to Outkast since I first got introduced to them back in '01 (now makes my 4th yr. as a Outkast fan), I know they had albums put out back then be4 the 2 big breaktroughs of STANKONIA and SPEAKERBOXXX (2 of my best favorites to incl. along in my CD collection or music collection for example). They were the 1st rap songs to bring a lotta songs that deals w/ the cities of Atlanta and Jonesboro for example.
I once dubbed them as the Steely Dan of Hip-Hop b/c of the rock group back in the '70s (alongside Donald Fagen and Walter Becker). They a varied mix of jazz, R&B, funk, gospel, blues, funk, Latin, electronic, etc. They can do it all kinds. Believe I'm a real fan of music of all kinds myself. This will get you in the groove if u grab this if u're a fan to rap, R&B/old school, jazz, and/or other types of music.
If u're a fan to Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Barry White, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Charlie Parker, Steely Dan, John Mayer, The Roots, Tribe Called Quest, The Neptunes, Jay-Z, Goodie Mob, Kanye West, Nelly, Alicia Keys, Patti Labelle, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, N.W.A., Twista, Cee-Lo, R. Kelly, among others, u must-have this book if u're truly a fan to this group.
They both took home Grammys for Best Rap Album and Record of the Year from their multi-platinum best-selling double CD SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW, which means they taking on a new level in the world of music (black and white).
I'll love to checkout their latest movie which I been awaiting on "A Life an Idlewild" premiering on HBO ASAP. They probably had that change. Maybe not, we'll have to see about it. Well big up to my group Outkast for doing such a good job.
Good initial look inside one of music's legendary acts.......2004-10-08
Don't be deceived by the subtitle which says that "Hey Ya!..." is the `unauthorized' biography of the visionary Atlanta Hip-Hop group, OutKast. Don't expect any Kitty Kelley-style revelations. This is only unauthorized because it wasn't written in direct cooperation with the band and to attract buyers with enticing `unauthorized' label. In truth, "Hey Ya!" is nothing more than a 190 page glowing review of OutKast. None of this, however, is a knock against the book because, at its core, it's a fascinating look at the beginnings and evolution of one of the true landmark groups in music today.
From their earliest days after meeting in high school, Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000) and Antwan Patton (Big Boi) set out to make music on their own terms, seeking to be evolutionary and revolutionary. Whereas most hip hop acts were sticking to tired formulas and unoriginal beats and techniques, this duo (which quickly adopted the appropriately title name, OutKast) kept pushing the envelope and trying create something new. This biography deconstructs the group by showing some of their earliest musical influences like, understandably, Run-DMC and George Clinton and the more unlikely Kate Bush (a personal favorite of Big Boi's). It reveals how the two principles disparate styles didn't disrupt the music, but rather enhanced. It gives a nod a to OutKast's earlier supports like Atlanta's Dungeon Family studios and the Organized Noise studios. Most importantly, the author, Chris Nickson, spends most of his effort analyzing how OutKast evolved musically (and stylistically) with each progressive album. Instead of resting on what worked before, OutKast kept taking risks and it made a difference in how they were viewed and in their legacy.
While "Hey Ya!..." may not be a packed with amazing revelations, it still gives fans a good opportunity to get inside this seminal hip hop act. The information is strong and gives fans a stronger connection with this OutKast.

An Excellent Study.......2000-07-26
The Confederate army in the Trans-Mississippi Department has long been neglected by historians. Alwyn Barr wrote a wonderful account of the Texas brigade commanded by Camille Jules Marie, Prince de Polignac. Not only was his research meticulous, but his writing flows through the pages. Polignac's men fought in some of the largest battles west of the Mississippi--Sterling Plantation, Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Yellow Bayou--and proved themselves good soldiers. This book deserves to be on the shelves of anyone with an interest in the Trans-Mississippi Confederacy or in Confederate brigades in general.

The story that jolted the conscience of the nation when it first appeared in The New Yorker
Jonathan Kozol is one of America’s most forceful and eloquent observers of the intersection of race, poverty, and education. His books, from the National Book Award–winning Death at an Early Age to his most recent, the critically acclaimed Shame of the Nation, are touchstones of the national conscience. First published in 1988 and based on the months the author spent among America’s homeless, Rachel and Her Children is an unforgettable record of the desperate voices of men, women, and especially children caught up in a nightmarish situation that tears at the hearts of readers. With record numbers of homeless children and adults flooding the nation’s shelters, Rachel and Her Children offers a look at homelessness that resonates even louder today.
Customer Reviews:
Kozol Misunderstood.......2003-06-14
I have been reading several reviews of books by Jonathan Kozol and I am disappointed. For starters, everyone seems to be blaming minority mothers for their "out of control baby making." I think the point of his books have been missed. Kozol is always looking at how societal ills effect children. He is not apologizing for families that are larger than can be afforded - he is sympathizing with the children that are born to them. He is sympathizing (better word empathizing) with the children who attend horrible run down schools and like in welfare hotels. As a public school teacher in Chicago, his revelations are very real. We do teach in terrible buildings. We do have homeless children. Would I ever think to point the blame at them? Am I pleased with the choices their parents have made? Not always, but I am also not the one to judge -- I am there to teach their children.
As for all of the people who suggest all "these people" need to do is get up off their couches and get a job: I would like to know if you would be willing to hire these people with substandard educations and possibly no permanent residence. Middle and upper class America is quick to condem those without work, but also the last group of people to provide employment to those in most need. Before condeming the people in these situations, I firmly believe we all need to take a hard look at ourselves.
A Great perspective.......2002-12-12
Reading through the book Rachael And Her Children you are brought into a entirely new world. A world where the homeless are not just figures with hands held out asking for spare change. Kozol brings us into the lives of these homeless story by story case by case sharing his personal interviews with these misfortunate people. Instead of putting a empty face on what we normally walk by and think nothing of, Kozol shows us that these individuals were not just mere vermin but people whom grew up like any of us but for any which reason now are homelss. Kozol does an excellet job in showing us not only these poeples lives but also educates the reader in exactly how big of a problem homelessness in America actually is. After reading this book my understanding, knowledge, and compassion of how homeless are actually treated is rought into full perepective. The book has great readabillity and is compelling enough to keep you flipping the pages. I would recomend this book to anyone and think very highly of it
-Matt
Failure to Thrive.......2001-11-26
The term used in this book that describes the endangered status of an infant is "failure to thrive." As I translate the phrase, "failure to thrive" indicates the hopelessness of a child's future, the result of neglect from society, the dwindling of life. Jonathan Kozol's review of homeless families in America is a chilling depiction of the actual heartache and suffering endured by the homeless. So often does society lose sight of what it truly means to not have a place to call "home."

to mr. Westfall.......2001-05-23
This book was based on true encounters with homeless individuals and their families. It contains real life situations, although the names are changed, due to protection for homeless individuals. It is a good look at what homelessness is about. It isn't about a lot of lazy, drug addicted people that are hopeless because of their own indolence. They are normal people that had a job, but the tides have turned and they were in the depths of homelessness. It is a tragedy that could happen to anyone. It is a good book to learn about the tragic events that follow homelessness. It is important to know that homelessness is a universal tragedy. It could happen to anyone at anytime. After reading this book I began to sympathize with homelesss individuals because they are brave. Homelessness was not as easily escapible as I thought. It takes a lot out of an individual. It drives them to a point where they think the world is ending.
I reccommend this book to anyone who is intrigued or even curious of homeless experiences. It is a good and factual book that contains intriguing real-life experiences of homeless people. It can get statistical at times but only to prove it's point. That homelessness is a tragedy for a lot of people all over the country. Thanks Mr. Westfall! have a nice summer!
