4 out of 5 stars If you are serious, you need this.......2007-09-30

You need this if you want to start thinking as a professional. There's templates for contracts and wording you would never think of as a newbie. It is, however, just a guideline when it comes to pricing. Illustrator Brad Holland said that pricing guidelines are "nothing more than a survey of what current prices are. It should be obvious that if you base future fees on a statistical average of what current prices are, you'll preserve the status quo. Many artists believe these guidelines are one of the reasons that illustration fees have stagnated for 30 years."

But, if you're new like me, you're clueless. Every bit helps.

5 out of 5 stars The book no graphic designer should be without!.......2007-07-04

I think the true title of this book should be "The Book No Professional Graphic Designer Should Be Without: Things Your Client Might Not Want You to Know About the Design Business". That pretty much sums up this book. Contains tons of info about copyrights, trademarking, legal issues, ethics and everything else a graphic designer, freelance or otherwise, would ever want to know about the art buying and selling business. Applies to illustrators and traditional artists just as much as graphic designers. The 'artist's business bible' in a nutshell. Created by the Graphic Artist Guild, a society established to promote fair, ethical treatment and legal protection for artists of all types.

My professor recommended that I purchase this book, boy am I glad she did. It is an amazing resource for any ethical and pricing questions you will have. I am starting a job at an advertising agency soon and this book really helped me understand and prepare for what i'm in for as far as salary and other specifics go.

I gave this book to my daughter's father-in-law since his dad was the matre d at Chasens for years. He thoroughly enjoyed reading the recipes and memories. He remembers a lot of the recipes and now can cook them himself!

5 out of 5 stars The Foodie was right!.......2003-11-12

I read Jonathan Reynolds' article in the NYTimes Magazine--an interview with a wacky-but-wonderful foodie whose current favorite cookbook is Hollywood du Jour, so I sent for it. It's great. I love the recipes, but the lore of these extinct Hollywood restaurants is great reading. I immediately sent one to my mother who had fond memories of the Brown Derby, Coconut Grove and Bullock's Wilshire, since she spent most of her young adult years in L.A. She always talked about grapefruit cake and Goodwin has the recipe--and the original Cobb Salad. If you collect cookbooks, take it from Alan Davidson, Foodie and gourmet historian and winner of the 2003 Praemium Erasmianum award for contributions to European culture, society and social sciences-"a very good book". I say 5 stars!

Having grown up near most of the restaurants I thoroughly enjoyed reading the history contained in this book. The sticky orange buns from Tick Tock are now part of Sunday brunches at home.

                          Book Description

First Lessons on Banjo is an ultra-easy instruction manual for beginning five-string banjo played in the three finger style in G tuning. It can be used by those with no previous experience with the banjo or music of any sort. It is so basic it can be used even by small children. The book features very detailed descriptions of even the most basic aspects such as wearing the picks properly, the correct picking motion, and noting the strings properly. These are aspects that are so basic most manuals skip over them. There are many detailed photos, several from the player's point of view, not from in front of the banjo. First Lessons on Banjo covers the most basic rolls, the Alternating Thumb Roll and two Forward Rolls, plus the three basic chords plus the relative minor chord. All musical examples are presented in tablature, with the melody notes in boldface type so the student knows which notes to emphasize. All arrangements include lyrics, which is very important to the novice who is trying to train the ear to hear the melody among the fill notes. Several tips and suggestions about the proper mental approach are included that will lead to playing by ear and arranging at an earlier stage in the student's development. There are also suggestions about developing the proper mental approach and about speed reading of tablature. These suggestions are not found in any other banjo instruction book. The 'finale' arrangement is Cripple Creek, a popular banjo standard that when mastered, should give the novice a great sense of accomplishment. The accompanying recording includes all tabbed examples, with the rhythm instruments and lead banjo in separate channels. The songs are played at three tempos, the first tempo VERY slow, then a medium tempo version, and finally at performing speed with guitar, mandolin and bass accompaniment. The up- tempo accompanied versions are all together at the end of the recording so it the final tracks be used as a listening recording. This also allows the student to play along with all the more interesting arrangements in sequence without skipping around the recording.

3 out of 5 stars Kept me faithful to my practice times........2003-12-30

So, there I was. A thirty-something workaholic looking for a new hobby to unwind a bit, but with very little in the way of musical experience. Nonetheless, inspired by a local Allison Krauss concert, I found a hot deal on a great used banjo on E-bay and I was off and running! What fun! I'm hooked on the 5-string twang!! About 3 months or so at 30-minutes a day (give or take) and I can play well enough to entertain myself - and my wife and the cat can at least stay in the same room!

Not many banjo instructors in New England, so I thought I'd go in for a few good teach-yourself manuals. I bought four. In order of usefulness they were - Revised Banjo Primer by Geoff Hohwald - First Lessons Banjo by Jack Hatfied - How to Play the 5-string Banjo by Pete Seeger - How to Play Banjo by Tim Jumper.

The Banjo Primer was the best of the lot. I was able to make good progress with about 30 minutes practice each day. The instructions were clear and the tunes were fun to play (Cripple Creek, Boil 'em Cabbage Down, Worried Man Blues). It was VERY helpful that the book came with a CD. Some lessons I just couldn't get until I heard them played, then they came easily. Each lesson is played at three speeds, but I've pretty much given up EVER matching the insanely fast top speed.

First Lessons was next best. It also came with a useful CD with multiple speeds and I think I've at least got a shot at the top speed. It also includes tracks with only the backup musicians so you can jam on your own (I haven't reached that point yet). The choice of music wasn't as good - the intro claims that well-known songs are easier to learn, but I found them to be cliche and boring (Tom Dooley, Old Time Religion, Good Night Ladies). It was much more fun to learn a song I didn't know and finding myself actually playing something that sounds like bluegrass after the long struggle!

Both books cover roughly the same techniques and both focus exclusively on Scruggs Style picking (all plucking, almost no chord strumming). It's turning into my favorite style. But my goal is to play well enough to sit in on a local bluegrass jam, so I've also started to learn other styles (e.g. frailing) that will let me strum on chords in the background to build confidence. For that I need other books, but so far I haven't found a good one.

By all accounts, Pete Seeger's book seems to be the classic in the field. It started as a set of hand copied notes and it really is lots of fun to read. I hope that once I improve a bit more I'll be able to get more out of it. My guess is that its the book you'd want if you already had a community of pickers around to lend advice and guidance. As a teach-yourself manual though, I'm finding it tough going.

How to Play Banjo is the worst of the lot. To my untrained eye it seems more like a guitar book than a bluegrass banjo book. The focus is on chords and strumming (which is good for my next step I suppose), but it's just boring. The instruction is minimal and the music uninteresting, at least to me. I tried several times to get into it but found myself quickly going back to the other manuals when I realized I was no longer looking forward to my practice times. I finally threw in the towel on this one when I used it to try to learn "frailing". I like to think I'm a smart guy, but I just didn't get it. And I don't think it was me. I'm now in the market for an alternative, but in the meantime I'll keep pickin' with the Scruggs Style.

One last bit of advice. I highly recommend getting at least two books. I found myself much more motivated jumping back and forth between the Primer and First Lessons - when one got too hard or too boring, I'd work on the other for a few days. A great trick to keep from getting stuck. I'm in the market for some "intermediate" books next and I'll probably take the same approach.

3 out of 5 stars Very basic...takes nothing for granted.......2002-10-27

First Lessons Banjo is a very basic 32-page beginner's book (with companion compact disc) for the five-string banjo. It starts with the most elementary information such as banjo parts, picks, tuning, holding the instrument, and hand positions. Black and white photos are included. First Lessons Banjo also has a fair amount of written narrative, and one complaint is that the font used could have been bigger for ease of reading. Author Jack Hatfield explains how to play a simple melody (Go Tell Aunt Rhody) from tablature, how to count time, and use the pinch. The songs Tom Dooley, Good Night Ladies, Old Time Religion, Cotton-Eyed Joe, When the Saints Go Marching In, and Cripple Creek are also used to teach various beginning techniques such as alternating thumb roll, forward rolls, basic chords, slide, hammer-on, and pull-off. The charts include tablature with melody notes in boldface type, lyrics, and a clear reference to the applicable disc tracks for each song. Several tips are offered to help a student learn to play by ear, as well as recognizing rolls by their shape in order to read tab faster. The disc which comes with the book includes all examples, with the banjo and accompaniment in separate channels. The songs are played at three tempos - slow, medium, and up-tempo. First Lessons Banjo is clear and concise and takes nothing for granted. With diligent practice, a beginning 5-string picker would master this material quickly and be ready for more challenging exercises and lessons. -- Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now

Although there are countless instructional books on how to bowl, there aren't any that tell you something much more important—how to correct what you're doing wrong. Through the expertise of former Professional Bowlers Association superstar Mike Durbin, From Gutterballs to Strikes provides bowlers of all levels with quick tips and solutions for correcting 101 of the most common bowling errors. Knowing how to correct mistakes is a vital part of any athletic endeavor; that's why coaches serve such a crucial role. But with the exception of top-level players, few bowlers have the benefit of personal coaching. This book lets Mike Durbin serve as your very own bowling coach. Your game will improve quickly and dramatically with his easy-to-follow corrections to bowling's 101 most common errors—from bad foot position to poor timing to improper arm swing. Mike Durbin is the only bowler to have won the sport's crown jewel, the Tournament of Champions, on three occasions. A 14-time PBA Tour champion, he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1984. Durbin now serves as a commentator for ESPN's coverage of the PGA Tour. Dan Herbst is the author of eight sports-instruction books, including Bowling 200+, Bowl Like a Pro, and Bowling 300. He has written articles for Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and Bowlers Journal, among other publications.

Most of the people that previously reviewed this book gave it a good rating and that's ok. I found the section on how to practice informative but for the most part the author just rants about topics that are of no importance to the reader. I read Bowling Fundamentals before reading and there is no comparison between the two. Again there a couple of sections that are ok but for the most part this book is poorly written. He should have just written a how to instead of listing 101 most common mistakes that he thinks people make, don't waste your money on this book.

Woodhouse's prime position as commander of the Allied Military Mission to the Greek guerillas in German-occupied Greece enabled him to write the definitive history of the Greek civil war--an account of the turning point in Communist fortunes in Europe that has achieved the status of a classic. He analyzes the characters, ideologies, and events behind one of the longest and most bitter civil wars of modern times. With an Introduction by Richard Clogg.

5 out of 5 stars An impartial account of the Greek civil war.......2005-12-30

This is a "must" book for anyone seriously interested in the events in Greece during and after WW-II. The author was part (and eventually the head) of the British mission with the Greek guerillas so he was an intimate observer of what was happening. I lived in Greece during these awful years and in spite of my young age (I was 15 at the end of the period described in the book) I have a lot of recollections (when people shoot at each other in the streets in your town you take an early interest in politics). I found the book quite impartial and comprehensive. (I am sure that parts of it will infuriate the right and other parts will infuriate the left.) The author correctly points out that the Greek civil war was primarily an internal affair and external influences (by the communist countries in favor of the left and the US and Britain in favor of the right) were not as big as each side claim about the other. His closing statement is that (to the Soviets) "The rank and file of the KKE, and in particular its leaders, were expendable. Without a trace of compunction, Stalin let them go to their doom." Elsewhere (p. 233) he points out (correctly in my opinion) that "The rebels failed because the mass of the Greek people was against them." The internal nature of the conflict (with outsiders providing material support but not manpower except in one brief phase) is a fact that was forgotten when the Greek civil war was used as a paradigm to justify the US participation in the war in Vietnam.

The book describes at length the inconsistent behavior of the communist leadership but it does not mention what, in my opinion, was the main reason for that behavior. During the German occupation many people joined the communist led resistance to fight the Germans. Many of them were also not happy with the Greek government that was in power before WW-II. The communist leadership mistaken thought that these people would also be in favor of a socialist state. As the communist leadership pressed harder more and more people turned against it. Therefore the large support they had during WW-II eventually evaporated. The true attitudes of the Greek people are described very well in the book "Eleni" by Nicholas Gage. Readers who are not familiar with modern Greek history may also find "Eleni" easier to read. Personally I believe the two books complement each other very well.

This hardheaded book about international relations contains no comforting bromides about "peace dividends" or "the family of nations." Instead, University of Chicago professor John J. Mearsheimer posits an almost Darwinian state of affairs: "The great powers seek to maximize their share of world power" because "having dominant power is the best means to ensure one's own survival." Mearsheimer comes from the realist school of statecraft--he calls his own brand of thinking "offensive realism"--and he warns repeatedly against putting too much faith in the goodwill of other countries. "The sad fact is that international politics has always been a ruthless and dangerous business," he writes. Much of the book is an attempt to show how the diplomatic and military history of the last two centuries supports his ideas. Toward the end of The Tragedy of Great Power Politics, he applies his theories to the current scene: "I believe that the existing power structures in Europe in Northeast Asia are not sustainable through 2020." Mearsheimer is especially critical of America's policy of engagement with China; he thinks that trying to make China wealthy and democratic will only make it a stronger rival. This is a controversial idea, but it is ably argued and difficult to ignore. --John Miller

                              Book Description

A decade after the cold war ended, policy makers and academics foresaw a new era of peace and prosperity, an era in which democracy and open trade would herald the "end of history." The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, sadly shattered these idyllic illusions, and John Mearsheimer's masterful new book explains why these harmonious visions remain utopian.

To Mearsheimer, great power politics are tragic because the anarchy of the international system requires states to seek dominance at one another's expense, dooming even peaceful nations to a relentless power struggle. Mearsheimer illuminates his theory of offensive realism through a sweeping survey of modern great power struggles and reflects on the bleak prospects for peace in Europe and northeast Asia, arguing that the United States's security competition with a rising China will intensify regardless of "engagement" policies.

John's work on offensive realism is clearly articulated in an easy to read book that builds on earlier works by many of the greats of the realist school of thought and bridges a gap in explaining why states behave as they do. It is a well structure and well written book that avoids the use of theoretical and technical terminology, which greatly assists the author in getting his message across.

The book only makes a limited attempt to refute common liberal and critical theorist criticisms of realist theory; however as the author points out this would require the book to be taken well beyond its intended scope. I thoroughly agree with this and believe that such an attempt would have `muddied the waters' in the presentation of the theory. It does, however use a wide range of examples from the Napoleonic wars through to the present to explain his theory and these examples add a lot of depth to the offensive realist theory.

No matter whether you view the world from a liberal, critical theory or realist perspective, this book has something to add to the overall theory of IR.

Finally, it would be interesting to see how this theory explains current US actions in Iraq (which I believe John Mearsheimer has criticised). A true test for the theory in the 21st centaury.

                              4 out of 5 stars A good case overstated.......2006-09-11

As Mearsheimer's theories several other reviewers here have discussed I just want to add a few points. I always have a reluctant to accept someone who makes a political theory that only has a limited place for individuals.

However while Mearsheimer makes an extremely good case for his Offensive Realism, I found myself while reading though his examples a bit dubious over his explanations like Russia did not try to stay out of WW2 after the fall of France because she was trying to pass the buck. I think its because she was too weak to get involved in the conflict. Japan could have gone to war in 1941 against Russia rather then the US, in fact Mearsheimer's theories might suggest that Russia would have been a better target for them after all Russia was weak and their main rival in the region. At the end of WW2, the US with its forces in Europe would have been a hegemonic power there. Why did she not go for Eastern Europe too and why did she allow European powers to become independent? It controlled Japan too, why give that up?
Mearsheimer's himself admits having problems in explaining why Germany did not go to war in 1905 against France when his theories suggested that they should have.

The other issue is that this book states the system does not matter but what the rulers are interested in which is a relative advantages over their rivals. Well democratic societies, the electorate makes it quite clear it want *absolute* improvement in their living standards every year. If a leader of the US was to reduce the living standards of the US by reducing the living standards of China (as I think the writer suggests) I doubt the US voters would be pleased with their drop in living standards. If for example the US conquered Mexico then it would in the long term have made the Mexicans citizens, they would have voted, large sums of money would have gone into Mexico etc. The former US electorate would be upset as it sees large sums of money of its money going South. We can see such a situation actually occurring with Turkey attempts to join the EC. The rich states of EC don't want this drain in their living standards.

Also democratic societies electorates although they are prepared for a war, generally they want peace and will demand that they get it eg the Japanese electorate in the 1920s made the Japanese troops come back from its invasion of Eastern Russia, as did the US electorate in Vietnam and the Israel electorate in Lebanon. Both the Israeli and US electorates, are looking at the X of their troops that are getting killed not the 5*X terrorist that they are killing. In both, we can see that the electorate is saying lets get the troops to safety as soon as we can and a democratic leader that does not do so will find himself out soon.

3 out of 5 stars Should we trust academics?.......2006-08-14

I have not read the book, but I have read quite a number of the reviews of the book, which as a whole, I trust.

When I read that Mearsheimer would intentionally try and reduce China's power - to make a safer world? - I shudder.

Luckily for mankind neuroscience is making very quick progress - these new scanners are producing all kinds of REAL knowledge about how our brains work.

My guess is that intentionally trying to reduce the economic success of 1,300,000,000 Chinese is not going to make them friends of yours. If any Chinese leader wanted to pick a fight with the US, Mearsheimer would have given him very justifiable reasons - it would be a bit like the way we treated the Germans after World War I - that CAUSED WWII.

My bet is that the Internet, the spread of decent international institutions with REAL and FAIR rules and procedures, the spread of knowledge about how our brains work - and what upsets us, the spread of truly international commerce and institutions, the spread of international tourism, the spread of TV everywhere by cable and satellite and internet --- all these will have a profound effect on our wish to wage war. Increasingly war will come to be seen as the immature irrational truly antisocial behaviour that it is.

War comes from the way our brains our constructed - our ability to be fooled, to be persuaded to want more, to be led falsely, to be angered, to be insulted, to want to be part of the crowd. The new brain science revelations should help us construct new artificial political mechanisms, national and international, to avoid wars. I hope!

3 out of 5 stars 'Grey, grey is all theory '.......2006-03-17

The single - factor explanation of any complex reality, much less any complex reality involving historical development is bound to 'miss ' crucial elements, and at the same time provide 'explanation' as it were, for other non-intended areas of life.
. The idea of 'offensive realism' that states continually seek to maximize their power and control in order to guarantee their own survival, might seemingly be applied to explain the behavior of any individual organism struggling for survival.
It also has ignores other significant concepts of what 'nation- states' aim at, including one especially suited to the United States, i.e. the aim of a peaceful and prosperous mankind, of a universal system living in accordance with principles which provide 'life, liberty and happiness' to every individual. The United States despites Mearsheimer's cynicism has often acted historically altruistically, and made great investments and even sacrifices to bring about a better 'order of the world'.
The United States has despatched troops to areas where the U.N. and the Europeans were reluctant to go, just for humanitarian reasons. This is certainly not the single key to U.S.international action, but it certainly marks out something unique and important in U.S. policy.
Mearsheimer however does make sense in warning about the rise of China , and in suggesting that the U.S. not go overboard in strengthening a state which in many ways is already a major rival.
Again I believe it is important to make the crucial distinction which Mearsheimer does not emphasize enough between democratic powers like the United States and the present Great Britain , and between totalitarian powers like China, Russia, Iran and the greatest share of the Islamic world.
There are already signs after all that this totalitarian alliance is working to undermine the United States, separate it from its European allies, and bring an end to American hegemony.
If such an eventuality happens, it will be a disaster for the world.
