Disappointed.......2007-07-07
I bought this book because I saw the exhibit at the Musee Maillot in Paris in 2005 and stupidly didn't buy their book of the drawings as I thought I could buy it here it here in the US. (Which isn't possible). This is an extremely disappointing pick of very few of his drawings, all of which were certainly not my favorites. There were so many which better demonstrated his skill in catching the expression, the sexuality and the beauty in very few lines I am surprised at all the inclusions and the exclusions. In my mind he picked the weaker drawings. And yes, they didn't even catch an obvious drawing inserted upside down, which unfortunately states a lot since there are so few of them.
Not worth the pretty binding and ribbons........2005-12-12
The presentation is great - I thought this would be a treat. Great binding, nice ribbon, and maybe this would make a good introduction to Klimt's erotic figure-work BUT . . .! There are only 56 drawings, most of them have been seen and reproduced in other books. An index gives specific information about the images but since the pages are unnumbered, good luck trying to match a drawing with its description.
The drawings are not in chronological order so you can't see Klimt's style change. The drawings are cut off and cropped sloppily and set on the page arbitrarily; some in the middle of the page, others shoved to the top or bottom for no particular reason. Actual image quality varies since the drawings are taken from a variety of sources; some look as if they were hastily run through Photoshop to clean them up. (But if you tell this was done, if you can SEE the digital manipulation, that doesn't say much, now does it?) Judging by the screen dots and other indicators some drawings show, a lot of these drawings were scanned from other books, run through a Photoshop-type of program to fill out the page - and not very diligently. I think the publishers were trying to be artistic. Or something. They've failed miserably.
Thames & Hudson did an Egon Schiele book a while ago that shows you CAN do this kind of thing well, at a great price and with tons of illustrations, not just 56. In April of 2006, they are going to release a Klimt book. Skip this feeble Prestel book and wait for the T&H book.
One last observation about the book at hand: the drawing on page 34 is badly placed at the bottom of the page . . . and is UPSIDE DOWN.

Good review of the history of stop motion and a great introdutction into making stop motion movies, though not too deep. Some explanations are rather short and not everything is explained. Good price and quality.
Good, but no bible.......2005-10-24
An excellent book for fans of Aardman and those wanting a basic overview, but only fair for those looking for detailed information on how to create their own stop-motion films. Susanah Shaw's book comes closer to being the "bible" for puppet animators. But there are at least 6 crafts involved in stop motion, each deserving of a book in themselves, so no single volume can cover it all in detail. Worth buying, but don't expect it to be the all-in-one answer.
Cracking Good Book, Gromit!.......2004-11-27
Aardman is one of the most admired animation studios around, known by animators and regular people alike as the creators of beloved clay animation characters like Wallace and Gromit, and the "Creature Comforts'" pent-up zoo cat ("I need space!"). This book will be devoured like candy by anyone wanting a closer look. The text provides a well-rounded animation primer, but it's the pictures that really make this book such a valuable reference. Clay characters are removed from their backgrounds and depicted clearly in frame-by-frame movement sequences that demystify even the complex animation sequences. It also offers practical advice on building characters and other handy tips for animation production. If you are doing clay animation of your own, you'll refer to this book again and again. In the UK this book is titled "Cracking Animation" for the cheese-loving Wallace's favorite complement.

This book was excellent! It saved me from totally [messing] up a research project on Animation I am doing. Though they only describe how they really make their professional films, and how to do it with stuff like their custom armatures and foam latex, which i had NO WAY to get my hands on, It helped overall.

Sudoku Fever.......2006-09-25
Sudoku! Even the name is redolent of an island paradise far from the traditional workaday rat race! Did you know that, as Michael Mepham confesses, the game is an American one which the Japanese picked up and gave it their own translation for its name? It's true: "Su" means "number," while "doku" means bachelor. And In English, "sudo" means "pseudo," that is, ersatz or fake, while "ku" means, well, in English we have the expression "cuckoo," as in "I'm nuts about Sudoku!"
Mepham is an affable editor who has grouped his puzzles from easy to hard, or in his words, gentle to diabolical.
Every couple of spaces he helps out and drops a digit into one of the boxes. For imagine how "diabolical" this game would be with no numbers in it whatsoever! Will Shortz has several Sudoku books not worth the paper they're printed on, for Will is great at wordplay but I wouldn't trust him across the street without his pocket calculator. Meanwhile, England's Mepham is a sly dog, for when I picked up my pencil, never having seen a Sudoku puzzle before, and tried to solve the one on page 65, I saw right away the numbers 1, 6, 7, and 9, and I thought to myself, "What if this is some sort of reference to English history?" For example, which famous philosopher and author of THE LEVIATHAN died in that year? Why, Thomas Hobbes, of course, the man who wrote, "All that is real is material, and what is not material is not real." In France in that same year Papin invented the pressure cooker: coincidence? I think not!
As a puzzler, Mepham's happy flourish is his reluctance to use the number "8," and also his quirk in labelling his hard puzzles easy, whereas even your own children in 4th grade will be able to polish all his so-called "stumpers." It's sort of like, you know how in England, you have to drive on the wrong side of the road? Grading your Sudokus is like that here. This was last year's hottest puzzle craze, and for me, the puzzles on page 65 (the aforementioned "moderate" Hobbesian puzzle), 105, with its geometrically spiral hint cluster, and 127, with its ribbon of hints forming a northeast-southwest pattern, are the sweetest flavors on display here.
Two pages of worksheets help pad out a book that needs a lot of padding out. The pages I got were filled in already by another owner, a man I suspect by his handwriting, who must have been a complete dope.
not so "gentle".......2006-05-06
I got interested in Sudoku puzzles through the newspaper, and I felt I had the grasp of it and could solve them fairly quickly when I received this book as a gift. While the introduction to Sudoku was helpful and much more thorough than other books, I was very nearly put off by what they consider "gentle" puzzles. I found them quite difficult compared to what I had encountered in the newspaper and on the internet. So I would not consider this the book for a very casual sudoku puzzler but rather someone who wants more of a challenge. Assuming I ever get through the "gentle" ones, I imagine the moderate and tough part of the book will go untouched.
This book has a great introduction. Solid sudoku book overall........2006-05-04
Sudoku really is addictive. My first real experience with sudoku (outside of US Weekly or some other magazine that was on the coffee table at my sister's house) was this book. I struggled a little bit at first even on the easy ones, but once I figured out the basics (and help from the tutorial examples in the introduction) I was at home with this book.
Many sudoku books from my experience lack a solid introduction on the basics of how to solve. There is even some guidelines and suggestions for how to solve the more complicated ones, although I have yet to necessarily need that knowledge. I think this truly is the shining point of this book, next to having 132 puzzles that clock in at various difficulty levels.
Another bonus is the fact that there are blank grids at the end in case you screw up too bad or simply want to reproduce them with a photocopier. This is another feature that is not always included in other books.
Finally, a suggestion for other solvers out there that are having troubles with the quality of paper that these puzzles are printed on (this is a trick I learned when I was doing those grid-box logic puzzles from my childhood): put scotch-tape over the grid and then use a pencil. The tape is incredibly easy to erase from and adds some more durability to the book. This is also simple to do and would only require seven to eight strips of tape for each grid (I think. I typically do the puzzles in pen anyway and it turns out looking like a warzone on the grid... I rarely have pencils just sitting around).
Finally, if you like this product, I recommend "The Sudoku Code" by Francis Heaney and Frank Longo. It integrates every puzzle into this code that runs throughout all 200 puzzles in that collection.
Not too keen.......2006-03-04
This book is no rival to Carol Vordermann's sudoku books. In Mepham's book, those puzzles labeled easy are not so easy. So I can't even imagine how difficult the difficult puzzles will be. And I am a good, fast, logical solver who has done hundreds of puzzles. This book is NOT for the beginner, or even advanced beginner.
Not the best book for beginners.......2006-03-03
As a beginner, I bought three books of Sudoku puzzles. This one has very confusing introductory instructions on how to solve the puzzles, and the puzzles labeled "gentle" even at the first of the book are pretty hard. If you have already picked up techniques of solving Sudoku puzzles, this is a fun but challenging book.

Seeing the Whole Picture, But ..........2004-07-01
Jeremy Black has presented us with the entire mosaic of the Jacobite uprising in the mid-18th century. It is fascinating to see how he weaves the political and religious movements going on in George II's London, with Spain, Paris and the Low Countries into one larger picture. At times authors tend to be so myopic about their subject, but this gives us a broader field of vision. What this text does not do, however, is spend very much time, at all, on the Battle at Culloden Moor, which is what I was looking for. I found it tremendously profitable, if at times laborous, reading but distant from my hoped for goal. Perhaps the title should not have an emphasis on Culloden but rather on the entire Jacobite movement that surrounded the young Pretender.

Culloden from the Governments view.......2003-11-04
I originally bought this book to get my information about the Duke of Cumberland. Although it talks of Cumberland, he is but one of the many people viewed in this book. Mr. Speck gives us the events and political actions of the rebellion of 45 and the culmination of "the forty-five" at Culloden. It main focus is to show that the rebellion was not widely supported at all. That the highland army massed about the Young Pretender was relatively large; they represented a small minority when compared to greater Scotland. Mr. Speck shows that the Rebellion although feared was not supported and with any amount of resistance by George II and his administration it would have crumbled anyway. Many modern historians seem to romanticize the Young Pretender and his run through Scotland but we see more of the follies he lead and the fluff created by time. We also see that due to the "Aggressive" prosecution of the battle of Culloden the Jacobite rebellion all but ended and another rebellion never occurred. Good book. A bit tedious at times but nice to see a new point of view on an old and very important event in the history of Great Britain and especially Scotland and the Jacobites.

These are indeed cynical times. But to hide behind the smugness of cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, explains writer and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.
Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism--an exciting, spiritual model for creating social change. We don't have to be pious or martyred saints (as he explains throughout one chapter), starving ourselves in the name of a cause or staging protests in freezing rain. We can be "good enough" activists, assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We can replenish ourselves so that we do not burn out. We can emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than separatism and blame.

A non-academic book for the baby boomer generation.......2007-03-29
As many other reviewers I was asked to read this book as a part of a college course. My wife was recently assigned the reading in her MSW program. I do believe it has some value, but to a specific generation and type of activist. The book rarely (if at all) discusses a model of activism outside of that born from the peace and love movement of the 60-70s. If you are from these eras, by all means this is the book for you. If you are or will soon be a college student you will likely find little to connect with in the book. I suspect that its over use in courses at this time is a result of faculty promoting a book they feel applies to them greatly without thinking of how it applies to younger generations.

I read this book for a college class on Social Work, and although Loeb tells many meaningful and powerful stories, this is the same text I have heard before. If you read the first and last paragraph of each chapter you basically get the point. It's an easy read, and some may find it powerful, but I just found it repetitive and over-told.

Paul is an outstanding voice in our world. Fantastic book helping bring hope to a difficult time for those of us who aspire to service. It is a challenge to keep engaged in service and Paul does provide hope. I also appreciate his newsletter and recommend it to those who appreciate his work. Great insights.
Every citizen must read.......2006-08-11
I read Soul of a citizen which inspired me to action. I am now a volunteer activist in my neighbourhood and have formed a group of concerned citizens to negotiate and participate in our city's development plan. We have made an impact in the corporation and even had a few small successes along the way.

Must we indulge yet another collection of tripe in the guise of self-help? Didn't we get this sort of nonsense out of our systems a long time ago?
If you are the type who hangs around in the self-help section of Borders looking for something you haven't yet read, hoping the nice-looking man ordering the latte isn't as bad as your ex-husband, well, sure, pick this up. You can read it a few hours later after you've snuck that man past your sleeping children's doors and out to his car, and feel good about yourself and how wonderful a person you are for reading something like this.
For the rest of us that live with a real sense of morality, well, we know books like this are just excuses - a mechanism by which the anointed democrat leftists sanctify themselves. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I wrote this review. If it offended you, you're beyond help. If it rang true, you already know you don't want to get anywhere near this book.
