Title confusing - but charming collection.......2006-09-16

I see from a previous review that the title of this collection is confusing since it seems to indicate that there is information on Halloween customs in the book...I think this is arising from the fact that this is a companion book to the ACTUAL book (by the same author) called "Romantic Art and Customs of Yesteryear". If you take this one as an extention of that book (to give people the art as a separate, usable item) it makes more sense. I love it as the little vintage window it is.

Customs?...what customs? This is just a collection of tear-out postcard reprints with no comments, far less writing, to go along with them. On top of that, none of the "notable" ones are shown (Schmucker, Clapsaddle, etc.). Another "why did I buy this?" item to put on the shelf.

I love vinatage/antique Halloween ANY THING! These cards are excellent. You get 15 wonderful post cards! I plan to frame some for decoration. I won't even use these to mail they're so pretty and elegant! Great, ...price for a wonderful item. Recommend highly!

I use these books for crafts. This book contains a really great unusual selection, unlike the Halloween postcards I've seen in other books. Recommend if you are looking for something different. They would also be fun to actually mail, but who wants to give them up?

This book transcends the title of just "comic book". That label does nothing for the sheer wonder that is held within the covers of this incredible creation by writer Benito Cereno and artist Graeme Macdonald.

I can't exactly place the last time I've read a piece of comic lore and had such a good time reading it. I think it also helps that you can tell the creators of this project had just as much fun writing it.

This story documents the travels of the full time adventurer and part time president Teddy Roosevelt and the ghost of Thomas Edison through time and space. In this first (and hopefully not last) installment, we join them on their first adventure as partners, taking on the kin of Adolf Hitler in South America, and then on Mars. I don't want to give away too much, because there's plenty that happens that'll make you question as to what kind of medications the creative team was on when writing it, but I will tell you this...

Abe Lincoln + Dragon Punch = Comedy Gold.

Every turn in this book will have you laughing outloud and wondering where it can go next. Both Benito and Graeme are relative new comers to the comics field, and I don't think they could have made a better entrance. Benito's painstaking dialog (in some parts mixing german and spanish) and plotting, and Graeme's bold cartoonish lines, with a splash of color from one of the most talented colorists in comics today (Ron Riley), deliver an incredible book everyone is sure to enjoy.

So, if you too enjoy adventure, sci-fi, time travel, outerspace, aliens, history, science, and laughing 'till it hurts, definitly pick this book up.

And pick up an extra copy for your neighbor. And one for his kids. And one for your local library....

A good book for those interested in marketing in relation to specific films, statistics, genre's and era's. Film facts joined with marketing concepts make this one of the best books out there on American film marketing. High concept is a first step to understanding box office success in America.

Should be required reading not just for pointy-headed film students, but for film enthusiasts everywhere. This smart, tightly researched tome on the way Hollywood thinks you and I think offers valuable insight into the commodification of film as "thing", as opposed to art. Having revisited this book recently, I realized how much Dr. Wyatt's lucid recounting of overblown 80's movie marketing reads like a blueprint for the (continued)excesses of the 90's. Indie crushes notwithstanding, clearly Hollywood has not learned much. Let's just hope there won't be any more ad-nauseum flogging of mystical golf flicks starring Matt Damon and Will Smith.

An excellent introduction.......2001-12-07

Mr Kernfield is definitely an authority on jazz. I also own the "New grove Dictionary of Jazz", which he edited. "What to listen for in jazz" is well-written, though it can be hard going if you're not familiar with all the musical jargon.

The book is accompanied by a CD containing a rich selection of songs, covering many decades and many styles. Unfortuantely, some songs are excerpts (for example John Coltrane's Ascension). Excerpts of the notation of the songs are printed in the book. For example, I found enough about Weather Report's Birdland to understand the structure of the song well enough for my purposes.

I also found the book to be well organised. The chapters cover rhythm, forms, arrangement, composition, improvisation, sound and style. The appendices feature a discography and biographical sketches of some musicians, and there is also a good index.

If you read this book along with Aaron Copland's "What to listen for in music, you will not only learn heaps more about music, but you will enjoy your music heaps more.

interesting but flawed in format.......2000-07-15

There is some valuable stuff in Kernfeld's book; I enjoyed particularly the section on the historical evolution of jazz styles. Kernfeld obviously knows his subject well. However, I found his organization lacking. Including a CD with selections by jazz greats to illustrate his points was a fine idea; but the text should have been divided up so that the cuts on the CD could be listened to in conjunction with full text descriptions in the same order -- something about the personnel playing, why the cut is significant historically, and comments on what we're listening to. Instead, Kernfeld scatters the references to the different tracks throughout the text and this makes it much more laborious for the listener/reader. My second gripe is with the idiot at the publishing house (I presume it wasn't Kernfeld) who thought it would be cute to use a tiny (maybe ten point) pseudo-artsy type face for the entire text. Come on folks -- not every book has to be set in Times Roman, but this isn't even remotely a book face. It gave me a headache after three pages.

Well-written and practical.......2000-02-11

If, like me, you know a little about Jazz (but not much), and you're looking for a way to broaden your knowledge, this is the book you want.

Kernfeld focuses on the basics. He uses 22 landmark recordings (provided on the accompanying CD)to illustrate the points he makes. The six chapters of the book deal with rhythm, forms, arrangement, composition, improvisation and sound. In the course of reading the book, you revisit the same composition several times, each time focusing on a different excerpt from it. When Kernfeld talks about backbeats, syncopation and blue notes, he explains what he means!

This book is a must-have! (A useful accompaniment to this book -though not essential- is "How to read music" by Terry Burrows, another book/cd combination.)

As is expected of a Polgar, this book is very well written and easy to understand. The instructions for each section are clear enough for a novice to understand, and yet the exercises are challenging for even intermediate players. I have personally noticed an improvement in my game.

While it can be read quickly, I recommend contemplating each exercise and understanding what the lesson was before moving on to the next section...you will reach the end all too soon anyway.

But then you can go on to "Chess Tactics for Champions".

Excellent All-Around Introduction to the Game of Chess.......2007-01-11

I bought this book for my 6 and 8 yr. old children who had just started playing chess and had a basic understanding of the way the chess pieces moved . The book breaks down various facets of the game in small and easily understood lessons. My kids really love this book, and it has greatly helped improve their playing. I have also learned many things from this book. I had always been a casual chess player who could think through different situations as they unfolded in the game, but after reading this book, I now have a more structured and intentional approach to playing and can visualize patterns much better. I think this book is great for anyone who would like to improve their playing above the basic level.

Outstanding for clarity and comprehensive scope.......2006-12-29

Using this book for the past couple of months by reading the instructional material several times and doing all the exercises has caused me to conclude that this is one of the most clear and comprehensive books I have seen. My playing has improved steadily. The book is well edited and the writing style is straightforward. It teaches one how to play chess forcefully; but you have to be serious about spending time on the exercises. It really does deliver step by step instruction and I recommended it highly.

Good if you know some basics - Not a starters book.......2006-10-07

The problem is clear, the good points are clear! If you are just learning how to play (maybe don't know how the pieces move, or do, but don't understand much else) then you will find this book move along too quickly. Have an understanding of the basics, want an additional primer, then you will want some tips on how to play winning chess. Catchy title, but this book is a big general with some useful information for a just past the beginning stage player. If you are an absolute beginner this isn't the book (consder "Learn Chess", by Alexander and Beach for an adult beginner, "Chess: a complete guide for the Beginner" for an under age 16 beginner). What the title doesn't make clear is it's intended audience - a well advanced beginner!

This book covers info for all stages of life and types of persons (including men!) The section on risks is great, and the best chapter explains how Osteoporosis is diagnosed -- bone density scans are at last described in a meaningful way along with their interpretation. I found this very useful. There is a big and appropriate focus on prevention & treatment (great info here!) as well as cases presented that make each chapter come alive with real clinical descriptions and solutions. The book is incredibly well written, indexed superbly and contains numerous references. I can't say enough good things about this very informative and well done book!

Gloster Gladiator Aces.......2002-06-25

Compared to it's successors, the Hurricane and the Spitfire, the Gloster Gladiator hasn't been much published. This book shows that this plane deserves far more than it got attention-wise. Quite a few of the great names flew Gladiators, the RAF's last fighting biplane and one of the best ever produced. This is a distinction that only the Italian Fiat Cr42 could hope to match as you learn in this book, one of the few about this plane since the classic "The Gloster Gladiator" from Francis K. Mason in 1964, which set the standard about publishing this plane for the last 38 years.

I had heard a lot of good buzz about this book since it was published a few years ago. When I found out ESPN was making a mini-series out of it, I decided to take the plunge and buy it. I actually didn't end up watching the mini-series, but I loved the book.
One of the things that initially kept me away was the much-hyped baseball angle. Like any red-blooded American baseball fan that doesn't hale from the Tri-State area, I am life-long Yankee hater, and those George Steinbrenner/Billy Martin teams of the late `70s gave me plenty to hate. The last thing on earth I wanted to read was some hagiographic account of the Bronx Bombers winning the 1977 World Series.
I needn't have worried. The Evil Empire's tumultuous season is just one of several neatly interwoven story lines: New York's fiscal crisis, the city's nasty '77 mayoral election, Rupert Murdoch's purchase of the moribund New York Post. Several other subplots add spice: the blackout riots, Son of Sam, the burgeoning disco scene. New York was a busy place that summer.
There's nothing too profound here, just a snapshot of our greatest city at one of the lowest points in its history. Well paced and enjoyable, the book got me through several long airplane trips.

It didnt focus on the yankees as much as i thought it would, and when it did, most of it was about Reggie. All the events of that summer were interesting and I remembered a lot of it happening too which was cool.

Great slice of history into 1977............2007-08-23

I was impressed with the amount of factual research Jonathan Mahler put into this wonder readaptation into the year 1977 in NY City. He takes a book and illustrates a wonderful slice of history into multiple aspects. There are several issues that keep the reader interested in the book. I particularly like books that have multiple plots and subplots. Mahler was able to keep each chapter full of intrique with a look into human experience and emotions of the key characters in this one year of magic. The final chapter he puts out: "The Bronx is burning, ladies and gentlemen, as we watch the 1977 World Series".......

This is an excellent account of New York City and its troubles both on the baseball field and in the political arena. I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in the NYY ball club and the politics of New York City, particularly in the late 1970's.

It's hard to believe the author of this book was a little kid when he first visited New York in the 1970s. I first moved to NYC as a young adult during this decade, and found this book reverberating with the discouraging urine-stained decay that was ubiquitous then -- graffitied subways, homeless bums, massage parlours, garbage strikes, crime, loan defaults...

And yet... beneath all this, there must have been some kind of resolve and determination... or perhaps simply infrastructure... that allowed Manhattan, at least, to ultimately avoid the suburban flight afflicting the rest of the nation's inner cities. New York is still New York, but those dark abandoned streets of 1970s Manhattan today sport boutiques and spanking-clean SUVs from one end nearly to the other (of course, the outer boroughs have not been so lucky). While this has also resulted in a loss of character and the sad conversion of Manhattan's old ethnic neighborhoods, it is also testimony to the endurance of urban culture, of some kind, in at least one American city.

Enough social commentary and onto the book! At first it seems that much of the plot may concern the dynamics of Reggie Jackson & Billy Martin and the Yankees; also figuring large are the 1977 blackout and the mayoral race. It would have been easy, and appealing, to showboat the charged conflict among Reggie, Martin, and Steinbrenner; but the author never succumbs to this temptation. Instead he seamlessly weaves the story of 1977 New York in the context of the cultural, political, and financial background of the times. Even Studio 54, punk rock, The Mercer Arts Centre, and Soho are given lip service.

What makes it all so good is the natural trajectory that makes for an entertaining read -- it is hard to put down, like a good mystery; it tells a story. This is great non-fiction: historic, accurate, nuanced, and atmospheric -- and as entertaining as any fictional narrative could be.
