A Beautiful Book.......2006-03-22
I ordered this book afteer seeing it in Williams, Arizona. My husband is a great fan of John Wayne and the story and pictures were so enjoyable. I find him looking at it all the time.
The Complete Films of John Wayne.......2004-07-01
One of the best books on John Wayne films that I have ever
seen. I already own a softback copy and intend on purchasing
a hardback copy. I would recommend this to any serious John
Wayne Collector. It gives you a complete history of all the
films with a list of actors and a short bio of the film with
some pictures.
Below-average "Films of . . ." book.......2000-04-16
Aside from the illustrations, I don't find much to recommend this book. There are no commentaries about the making of Wayne's films, no discussion of Wayne's working methods, no critical analysis, and nothing about the films' financial impact in the theaters. No character names are included in the cast lists, so they are basically useless in finding out who played who. Much of the information is inacturate. In the introduction the authors state that in his early days Wayne appeared in several Ham Hamilton comedies, but no such films appear in the main body of the book (in fact, I've never heard of a screen comedian named Ham Hamilton, although there was an animator by that name working for Walt Disney at the time). The plot synopis to many of the films are incorrect, listing wrong character names and describing incidents that don't happen in the film. And I'm still trying to figure out why Ward Bond is listed twice in the cast list of DAKOTA. There's a really great blooper in the write-up to CHISUM: The authors state that the true-life characters of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid are included in the story and that Garrett is gunned down by Billy! Say what? (No, this doesn't actually occur in the film.) Oh, yes, if this book is the "complete" films of John Wayne, then why isn't COLLEGE COACH (1933) included?
My final verdict: Skip this book and seek out a copy of Allen Eyles' far superior (and, unfortunately, now out-of-print) book JOHN WAYNE AND THE MOVIES (re-issued as simply JOHN WAYNE).
Great book plenty of information.......1999-09-15
If you are looking for John Wayne films this is the book to have. It tells what the film is about, who also starred in and what year it was made. It also has plenty of photos to help you recognize what movie it is and if it is the one you are looking for. The book has some interesting facts about some of the movies.
Indespensable to the serious collector of Wayne films..........1997-04-03
The real testimony to the value of a resource is whether it occupies eternal space on your shelf, gathering dust, or if it becomes so worn out that it bears replacement. I have dogearred, destroyed, or otherwise "used up" two complete paperback copies of TCFOJW over the past twelve years since it first appeared. It was not until the last replacement that I finally relinquished and went to a hardback copy.
This book is an indespensable (if not exhaustive) resource for any serious John Wayne film buff. My only complaints (and, subsequently, suggestions for future revisions) are that the cast and tech lists are not complete; and that Wayne's appearences on radio and television are not documented. Another helpful feature would be to show which films are available in video and letterbox formats.

Book Description
In the mid-nineteenth century the United States was musically vibrant. Rising industrialization, a growing middle class, and increasing concern for the founding of American centers of art created a culture that was rich in musical capital. Beyond its importance to the people who created and played it is the fact that this music still influences our culture today. This anthology, which grew out of the first two National Conferences on Music of the Civil War Era, bridge musicology and history and represent the forefront of scholarship in music of the Civil War era.

Book Description
Bob Dancer is the best known video poker player and writer in the world. In just six years, after coming to Las Vegas with a $6,000 bankroll, Dancer won more than $1 million playing beatable machines. Million Dollar Video Poker recounts the events of those six years, with stories about his meteoric ups and downs, and lessons for players of all skill levels. Video poker is one of those rare casino games that can be beaten by a talented and informed player, and Dancer explains how it's done. Never before has a top video poker professional shared so many of his winning secrets.
Customer Reviews:
The real money is in book and video royalties.......2007-06-11
Even though he won over $1 million in a five-month period, he had to put most of his winnings back into the machines in order to win the next big jackpot. Mathematically his strategies are probably perfect, but that doesn't put money into my pocket. I've played video poker using his strategies and I lose every time. I guess if I had a bankroll of $80,000 to spend I would eventually win a jackpot, but then what's the sense if I win a jackpot of $40,000 when I'm already down by $60,000??!!! The book is a nice story about his life while earning a living at video poker, but his real earnings these days are from the sale of books, strategy cards, and video poker CDs.
A fun read for VP players.......2007-05-12
As an experienced VP player, I'm rating this book just as a fun read -- something to kill time while on your way to Vegas, Reno, or AC. I just wanted to know more about Dancer's life and what propelled him to decide to be a professional gambler. This isn't about agreeing or disagreeing with his methods -- just a fun read to see how a professional player got where he is today. Think of it on the level of admiring a film director alot and wanting to read about him/her -- you're probably not going to go out and make a movie, but you enjoyed hearing about his/her life.
I've sent a couple of these books to friends of mine who also play VP and they loved them.
Video Poker by a Pro.......2006-10-19
As a professional gambler and gambling book writer (Casino Gambling for Fun and Profit: Second Edition), I can say that Dancer is the premier VP strategist and player on the scene today, and this book represents the success he's earned for hard work involved in the thousands of hours he's sat before the video poker screen. (He is also an excellent dancer.) I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
J. Edward Crowder, Ph.D.
enjoyable read.......2006-09-11
If you like to play video poker this is a fascinating book. My husband thinks I'm obsessive and compulsive. Bob Dancer makes me look laid back. I really enjoyed his story. I like to re-read it sometimes when I'm going to Las Vegas just to get in the video poker mood.
Interesting, but dated.......2006-07-02
Bob's book covers more on his life story than the actual meat of playing video poker. I did enjoy reading it though.
Vegas changes a lot, and this book has not kept up with that change.
Overall, interesting, but if you want to learn how to play video poker, this book is not for you.

Book Description
Channel 4 had been a matter of controversy for years even before it came on the air in November 1982. There were lengthy debates about what its role would be and the part to be played by the ITV companies and the growing number of independent television producers. There was also political controversy over the profile of the new channel, some wishing to see it as "their" channel in response to the apparent political hegemony of Margaret Thatcher. The result was sharp conflicts, not only over programming but, as the channel became established, over its relationships with the ITV companies and its regulatory body, the IBA.
These controversies in the making of Channel 4 are revisited in this volume. The opening article by Edmund Dell, the channel's first chairman, describes and explains his sometimes stormy relationship with Jeremy Isaacs, the chief executive, while the witness seminar and the other articles offer the views of Channel 4 commissioning editors and representatives from the IBA, the ITV companies, the independent producers, the Home Office and the BBC.

Book Description
Anthony Rapp had a special feeling about Jonathan Larson's rock musical Rent as early as his first audition, which won him a starring role as the video artist Mark Cohen. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Rent opened to thunderous acclaim off-Broadway -- but even as friends and family were celebrating the show's first success, they were also mourning Jonathan Larson's sudden death from an aortic aneurysm. And when Anthony's mom began to lose her battle with cancer, Anthony found himself struggling to balance his life in the theater with his responsibility to his family.
In Without You, Anthony tells of his exhilarating journey with the cast and crew of Rent as well as the intimacies of his personal life behind the curtain. Marked by fledgling love and devastating loss, Without You is an exceptional memoir of the world of theater, the love of a son for his mother, and maturity won far too early.

Get this at Amazon.......2007-09-23
At first when I wanted to get this audio book I went to Barnes and Nobles. Figured, Hey, might as well save on shipping and handling. They never told me a price and told me it'd be in soon. TWO months go by and still no book! I go in every week and ask them, do you have my audio book yet?? they say No, we can't find it in any warehouse anywhere. Finally I say take me off the list, I'm going to Amazon.com. I also ask them what was the price? They say "about $70" I am so glad that I never got it from them!! I saved FIFTY bucks with amazon.com and also got it in TWO DAYS!! And that was with the cheapest shipping they have! It made the entire process worth it. And the audio book is simply amazing, I read the book about two years ago and now I listen to the Audio Book in the car while I'm driving. It's extremely relaxing and Anthony's voice is so soothing and I don't feel alone when I drive alone at night.
Enjoyable for Rent-heads.......2007-08-11
Since I'm a big fan of Rent, I enjoyed this a lot. A revealing look at Jon Larson and his cast in the early days.
A Beautiful Insight into an Adored Actor.......2007-07-29
Anthony Rapp has set the bar on many characters on Broadway. This novel introduces its readers to the man behind the song. It's remarkable to discover someone who has the talent to act and can find the words to express what we all long to share. Wonderful book for any fan or any person interested in good writing.
A must read!.......2007-06-11
A truly remarkable life story. Very well written and easy to read. I couldn't put it down!
This Book is Amazing!.......2007-05-15
If you are a fan of RENT or Anthony Rapp, you will love this book! Even if you've never heard of either of them, read this book. It is honest and heart-felt. It will truely touch you. It touched me!

A sociologist's view of the SAS.......2004-11-09
The central thesis of this book is that there is a myth of the SAS's military prowess that far exceeds the reality of their achievements. Although there is arguably some merit to this suggestion, the author largely relies upon logical fallacies and weak arguments which hint at a lack of understanding of military strategy.
The author begins by arguing that because the SAS have never single-handedly won a war their contribution to military conflict is insignificant. The impact of guerrilla warfare and counter-insurgency action in war is not discussed.
He then goes on to argue that the books and films of individuals such as Andy McNab and Chris Ryan give an unrealistic view of SAS activities. The fact that much of this material is clearly described as *fiction* does not impact upon his argument.
The author makes some valid points about the SAS and the militaristic overtones of Margaret Thatcher's government but inexplicably attributes this to a desire by the SAS to be associated with Thatcher, rather than the other way around.
Although the book is extensively footnoted and copious sources are cited, there are many fallacious appeals to authority which betray the author's lack of military knowledge.
No literate student of modern military history will find this book of value, unless as an object lesson in the dangers of not doing your research before venturing into print.
A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND GOOD MONEY.......1999-03-30
IT SEEMS THAT THE AUTHOR OF THIS VERY DRY AND ONE SIDED LOOK AT THE SAS HAS GOT A PERSONAL PROBLEM WITH THEM. INSTEAD OF JUST REPORTING THE FACTS, THE AUTHOR FINDS NOTHING BUT FAULT IN THE JOB THEY DO JUST LIKE AN ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK ON MONDAY NIGHT. IT IS VERY APPARENT THAT THE AUTHOR JUST LOOKS AT THE SURFACE OF SOME OF THEIR MISSIONS, INSTEAD OF DOING MORE RESEARCH TO FIND THE REAL ANSWERS. IF YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY...$50.00 FOR THE HARDCOVER VERSION! THEN BUY THIS BOOK. I SENT MINE BACK.
The popular view of SAS vs reality.......1998-03-23
The author of this book, a British academic, deconstructs the popular image of the Britain's Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) generated by the spate of books-historical, autobiographical, and fictional-that have been reprinted or written since 1980, when a SAS team killed a group of terrorists and rescued their hostages after storming the Iranian Embassy in London, an action that propelled the SAS, with the blessing of the Thatcher government, onto the world stage. The author examines what he believes is the disparity between the myth and the reality of the SAS and its history, and he examines the political use to which he believes SAS has been put by Conservative governments beginning with Thatcher's. The author covers a lot of ground in the course of examining movies, television documentaries, and many books dealing with the SAS. His examination of the literature of the SAS will provide many readers with useful assistance in deciding which of the many books about the SAS are worth pursuing (and it will alert many readers, I suspect, to books of which they were unaware). As one would expect of an academic, the book is richly footnoted and sources are cited. SAS groupies and wannabes will wish to spend their money and time on other books. Serious students of modern military history in general, and of the SAS in particular, as well as those with interests in politics or sociology, will find this book interesting.
Book Description
More than 3,000 prisoners in the war on terrorism have been captured, held, and interrogated in Afghanistan alone. But no one knows what transpired in those interactions between prisoner and interrogator-until now. In THE INTERROGATORS, Chris Hogan, the senior interrogator at Bagram Air Base and in Kandahar, where al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners were first detained and questioned, lifts the curtain. Soldiers specially trained in the art of interrogation went face-to-face with the enemy. These mental and psychological battles were as grueling, dramatic, and important as any in the war on terrorism. We learn how, under Hogan's command, his small group of 'soldier spies' engineered a breakthrough in interrogation strategy, rewriting techniques and tactics grounded in the Cold War. Hogan reveals the tricks of the trade, and we see how his team-four men and one woman-responded to the pressure and the prisoners. By the time Hogan's group was finished, virtually no prisoner went unbroken. Riveting and illuminating, THE INTERROGATORS is a fascinating work of nonfiction that reads like the most exciting of spy novels. It is the first and only inside account into this world we have never been allowed into and is sure to be one of the most talked about books of 2004.
Download Description
In a war with no precedent, where the rules are being written even while combat operations unfold, knowing the enemy's secrets is only way to win. You cannot learn enough to root him out by means of satellite imagery alone. No amount of eavesdropping will betray the balance of his treachery. To defeat our new and cunning enemy, he must be outwitted in gruelling, desperate, one-on-one confrontations.Often times over coffee and a cigarette. In The Interrogators we see how Chris Mackey and his fellow "soldier-spies" swiftly discovered that the techniques and tactics grounded in the Cold War were of no use against al Qaeda and Taliban prisoners—and how Mackey's group engineered breakthroughs in interrogation strategy, creating highly sophisticated ruses and elaborate trickery to bluff, terrify, and confuse their opponents to yield up precious information. And Mackey's team did so under the most extreme sort of pressure: the fear that one of these prisoners knew the details of a plot that might make 9/11 look like child's play. From astonishing glimpses into classrooms of the U.S. government's interrogation school, to the battlefields along the Pakistani frontier, to the locked-door rooms where American men and women faced off against the enemy, The Interrogators is both captivating and controversial, forcing readers to confront the gray side of war. A real-life thriller, with the highest of stakes, The Interrogators lifts the curtain on the secret confrontations that will determine our future.

This Is What It Is Like.......2007-06-06
This is the story of military interrotagtors, how they are trained, and what they do in combat. To my knowledge it hasn't been told before. I see this as a pretty reasonable and accurate account -- Chris Mackey is obviously one of the most capable, cleve, and cunning linguists DLI has ever produced.

The war up close.......2007-04-04
A gritty view of the confrontion in Afganistan, eyeball to eyeball
Would be a compelling book, if edited or better-written.......2007-02-11
I bought this book at a dollar store because I wanted to learn more about Al Quaeda and how U.S. interrogation is conducted.
I am reading it with a pen and careful attention, only because I'm intensely interested in its content.
Otherwise, I would throw the book away.
If edited or re-written, it would be a brilliant book.
In its present form, it's difficult to read.
Very unfortunate--such an important subject.
a truthful look at early interrogation in Afghanistan.......2007-01-20
The Interrogators by Chris Mackey and Greg Miller is a first person account of Army interrogators just after September 11. The book is written from Army Reserve Sergeant Mackey's perspective and through his eyes we learn about some of the training interrogators go through and then their experience in Afghanistan. Mackey discusses the various interrogation methods used by the Army and how strictly they stayed to the Geneva Conventions even though President Bush declared the Conventions did not apply.
Mackey served his year in Afghanistan from the start of that war and he notes in the book what was not permissible when they began the war was acceptable when his war ended and he notes in the epilogue how he views the slippery slope from the mild forms of interrogation his unit engaged in could become Abu Grahib years later. The methods Mackey viewed as the last resort became the starting point for the interrogators who came after.
The Interrogators is not simply a narrative of Mackey's career. It focuses as much or more so on the other interrogators in the unit and the men and women Mackey led in interrogation. He discusses technique and what sort of resistance they faced from prisoners and how advanced some of the resistance techniques were.
This is an engrossing book and at times I wondered if he should be sharing all of this, but I imagine most of the reading public will not be interrogated by the Army and even knowing the game that is being run does not make one immune to it.
Either way, The Interrogators is an excellent book about Army interrogation and while it cannot dispel the image of the brutal interrogation tactics Iraq has been known for, it does show a different side of interrogation...not a kinder, softer side, but one which has respect for the law and for the Geneva Conventions. It also shows the stress and the exhaustion interrogators put themselves through.
Worth reading?
Absolutely.
-Joe Sherry
A pretty good read.......2007-01-03
If you are a hard-core "military action" enthusiast who craves numbers, codes, in-depth descriptions of combat operations and perpetual dialogue about firearms, this isn't for you. If you are seeking advanced knowledge on interrogation tactics, this book probably isn't for you (although it is fairly detailed in this respect, from a rudimentary level). If you want stories about water-boarding hardened, high level Al Qaeda operatives by 3rd party "rendition" facilities, this ain't what you're looking for.
What this book is is an interesting and well-written read about one function of military intelligence. In this respect, the book is fairly important, as the particular area that's covered in this book (field processing, preliminary interrogation and initial value assessment) isn't covered in depth anywhere else.
This book is one mans perspective from one mans job from one operational area of one war. It's not a "manual" on interrogation, but it is a good read for the layperson who isn't planning on interrogating Bin Laden any time soon and looking for a book that will tell him how to do it.
If Moby Dick gets 5 stars, I give this book 3, but as a "book about how interrogations work in the field", it's probably more like 4 1/2 stars.
Product Description
An unprecedented look at the front line of the war against terror: the inside story of six American interrogators, thousands of prisoners, and the race for the truth. More than 3,000 prisoners in the war on terrorism have been captured, held, and interrogated in Afghanistan alone. But no one knows what transpired in those interactions between prisoner and interrogator, until now.

Book Description
"I have the greatest admiration for this work, presented as it is in such a readable style and with such a convincing argument. I think the book sets a new standard for works of this type."
from the Foreword
Though small among its woodpecker relatives, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker poses a huge dilemma for its human neighbors. Uniquely adapted to live in the old-growth pine forests of the southeastern United States, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker has nearly disappeared as the forests have been cleared for agricultural, commercial, and residential uses over the last two centuries. Today, it waits at a crossroads. Scientific management practices could restore the woodpecker's habitat and population, but the imperative to convert old-growth forests to other uses remains.
In this book, three of the leading experts on the Red-cockaded Woodpecker offer a comprehensive overview of all that is currently known about its biology and natural history and about the ecology of the fire-maintained forests it requires for survival. As the most visible endangered species in the Southeast, and the one whose conservation impacts the largest land area, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker holds a compelling interest not only for ornithologists, but also for wildlife managers, foresters, developers, environmentalists, and government officials. For all of these groups, this book will be the essential resource for learning more about the Red-cockaded Woodpecker and ensuring its survival.
