The Culture Advertising Design put'em on blast review. Don't sleep on this one. This book is packing! Chock full of guts might be one way to put it. The book is filled with the trials, tribulations and fables of the Demi-Gods of our industry. It reads like "designerati" pulp fiction, filled with slick tales of their heroics, be it hiring freshly caped side-kicks or wearing down seemingly villianous clients, they prevail not always unscathed but they did live to tell about it. I really like this book. The photographs are beautiful, and the information quite useful. Although the author has various lists of essential items to have in your home, the descriptions tie in nicely with the clean and colorful images. This book is more about important staples for your home, but shown with a modern chic flair.

This is one of the very few books I have on interior decorating I really regret buying without a readers review.It reads like a shopping list with extremely bland,uninspring pictures.Everything is white and everything is slipcovered.
As a mere shopping list this book is true to its name,however dont expect anything more than that.If you need someone to tell you to buy bowls and saucers for your kitchen, or classic pieces rather than fad pieces,quality pieces rather than cheap knockoffs,then buy this book.If not please give it a pass.

When I first heard about this book, I thought it would be extremely patronizing, or a puff-piece at best. However, I checked out some of Baddeley's other works and was impressed, so my hopes for this one were great. He didn't disappoint. "Goth Chic" chronicles the gothic movement from its inception to modern day. Along the way, Baddeley touches on literature, film, music, and the Goth subculture. Intelligent without being stuffy, and very well-written, "Goth Chic" comes highly recommended to anyone interested in the macabre and the sublime.
Another Baddeley Book.......2004-06-22
I like Gavin Baddley's books even though I am not really satanic. He described the subjects in his books pretty acurrately. I also like the pictures in his books, something you don't really see in adult books. This centers more on American gothic media sell outs, nothing on the Amish or Pilgrims themselves who it came from. Gothic was supposed to represent the ghosts of the dead pilgrims, it WAS like a Klansman in the hood and robe. And now it mostly deals with those who lost their sense of humor with Bauhaus and not born again Christians such as myself. It's a shame Baddeley is not successful, which this book was his big BOMB in America and he's bigger now in England with sell out Filth jusrt when Americans were starting to like them. God bless.

Well, a nice hod'de do and what the hell, the book to me seems to explane the "Glowin the dark fangz, and, plastic halowwen caped, M. Manson's kids that plage the word! Yes it explanes them very well, however Gothic is not such, i doubt many wrighters could explane what it is to "be" gothic, lord know you dont 'turn into one', it is descoverd inside ones self. Therefore hell to wright about, so if you want to know about all thoes kids who run areound with black greese pait from last hallloween on there eyes and excsivly use the tem "Blah" (in a Bella La Gossie (sp?) way) ..go on read about it. Maybe one of thes little Manson kids will tell you what "clan" there in.... seriosely if you want to know about the Gothic culture go get youresef a older goth who want to talk, this book is a waist of time & money.

I found this book to be highly educational on the origins of the term gothic and the sources of inspiration for today's goth culture. The author explores the early influences of horror and fetish as topics in gothic literature, film and music. To grasp the term gothic you have to accept that it encompasses a wide variety of influences and interests. Baddeley approachs his subject with an open mind and rarely leads the reader astray.
I found it amusing and enlightening that so many writers and musicians interviewed in this book who are labeled gothic reject the label; bad news for them, the instinct of the genuine goth is rejection of labels, especially as a goth. My experience is that anyone who calls themself a goth, is not. The essence of goth is to be an outcast, a loner, an individualist and the last thing such a person is going to do is identify themselves with a group.
I found the most interesting parts of this book had to do with early horror films, most of this was material I was unfamiliar with. The weakest part of the book is due to the fact that popular taste in goth music changes so often that there is little mention of the musicians who currently dominate clubs.

I love this book!!! I loved the part about Robert Smith and the photo of Mr and Mrs Fiend and most of all do I love the part about Edward Scissorhands!! This book is great, and Gavin Baddenly wrote "thanks to Lydia from The Shroud" I like the Shroud and I was surprised to see that most of my favorite movies and music appeared in this book...Even Diva Destruction (and I thought they were quite new) So anyone who likes Gothic music and movies: BUY THIS BOOK, IT'S GREAT! And it gives much information about the history of the music, too!

Benchmark Repetoire Book.......2007-01-10
This is a repetoire book, not a games collection, not a treatise. From a repetoire book I want to know what to play in each situation and what kind themes arize when I do. And this one does just that: it is an excellent repetoire book. Mine is already tattered. I use this book a LOT. I buy other books to complement this one.
What makes it good is the presentation: lots of diagrams, good summaries, good "quick review" pages. Each chapter has its own outline of variation with page numbers to lines. These are slightly abbreviated and are awesome for quick reference and self-testing.
When you evaluate the choice of lines, you'll always find a few places you disagree. Since this is somewhat inevitable, I don't think it's fair. A repetoire author MUST advocate something and making choices means some people feel their pet line is excluded. You buy this kind of book because you WANT this. These authors deliver.
And mostly, they have a consistent criteria for why they chose the lines they did. They want to prepare you comprehensively, so you have a something to play against anything that's thrown at you. This means covering the anti-sicilians and all the d4 deviations. They do. They also insist that the lines be technically sound. Mostly they succeed, but I'm a little suspect on their response to the Alapin. They also, generally, want lines that lead to middlegames with clear themes, and best of all, these themes are often similar across divergent openings. There's lots of cross polination here. Finally, the usually want openings with compact theory, which is good for club players.
There are a few flaws relative to the above criteria, but in a work this ambitious, it's inevitable. I thought the Nimzo as the main defense to d4 is reasonable, but it's breaks their "compact" rule since there are nine (!) different plans for white on move four. And as I said, the way they respond to the Alapin, delayed Alapin, or Smith-Morra leaves me a little uneasy. There also some dumb chapters on the history of e4 and the history of closed openings. Useless filler. The chapter on illustrative games has 13 games. Why bother? It's clear you need to supplement this book with games based opening books, so don't give me a token gesture, admit it and recommend some books.
Overall, quite an impressive undertaking. This is surely the benchmark to compare repetoire books against. I'd be very happy to see copy-cats adopting the basic format and presentation, but putting their own spin on what they advocate.
Openings for White is better........2006-09-17
I bought both this and the repertoire for white book, which I reviewed with 4 stars. This one I feel a bit sceptical about. Basically I have found i don't really like playing the Bogo or Nimzo Indian, which is a big chunk of the book, since it is the response to all d4 openings. The positions resulting from these openings are completely foreign to me and seem like they are taking too long to adjust to. Other opening reccomendations seem good though! The accelerated dragon is generally reccomended all around, and it is covered quite thoroughly here. But you can take what you want and ignore the rest.
Some good analysis and opening suggestions for Playing Black.......2006-09-02
Personally, I take most chess books that offer a suggested opening system with a grain of salt. They tend to be biased in favor of what they suggest. But this book is one of the best I have seen that doesn't become overly biased to to point of recommending moves that are less than sound.
I really like the idea of using the NimzoIndian Defense agaist 1.d4 with 1..Nf6 2.c4 e6 3 Nc3 Bb4. It is an active way of playing against d pawn openings. The lines suggested against 1.e4 using the Sicilian with 1..c5 is not to my taste. So you as well as I may pick and choose what we like. To go along with this book I suggest getting "Understanding the chess openings" by Collins for a good general servay and a good book on chess traps (to learn not only traps in the openings but the tactics that go along with type of opening you choose).
This along with this author's same book on playing White are well done.

Englands greatest comedy.......2003-04-02
Its a shame that the dvds and videos of only fools and horses are not avalible to buy in the USA, because it is quite simply the greatest TV comedy ever. As for the book, you cant go wrong, details on all the characters, episodes, sets atc. No Brit or american should be without it. Brilliant.

My department changed the reading material for a promotional exam from Callibre Press to this junk. I was forced to read and internalize it; I hated it. This book is intollerable from the front cover. Take a look at the guy in the graphic. He is holding a flashlight in his gun hand; nuf said?
Very basic, good book.......2001-02-28
I had to read this book for a promotional examination and found it to be a good refresher of the very basic points that we all learned at the beginning of our police careers. When I am approached by someone who is not yet in police work and wants to read a good, simply written and understandable book on law enforcement, I always recommend this one. It may seem to be too basic for those of us in this field for the years I have served, but many areas are still very relevant.

Too vague and general for someone using the book to use as a reference. Does not go into a lot of key points you actually use on patrol. Also, tends to make remarks that do not reflect the reality of todays police work. The author seems out of touch with policing today.
