    Book Description

Maniac Eyeball is the third, final and most comprehensive volume of autobiography written by the late Salvador Dali. Maniac Eyeball contains the frank and uncensored confessions of Salvador Dali, from his childhood and first adolescent sexual experiences to his emergence as a painter, surrealist and eventually the most famous-and possibly richest-artist of modern times. These inspired tracts, covering art, love, sex, money, death, fame, science, his famous friends and enemies, and his extraordinary creative genius, reveal the intricate workings of Dali's mind to create not only an unparalleled autobiography, but also one of the key surrealist texts yet published.

Salvador Dali (1904–1989) entered the ranks of the Surrealists in 1929 with a series of iconoclastic paintings which fused technical virtuosity with Freudian infantilism, leading to his invention of the "paranoiac-critical" method. Later expelled from the surrealist group, he was christened "Avida Dollars" by Andre Breton while acquiring the reputation of master showman and scandalist. His art and writings remain among the most unique and important bodies of work of the 20th century.

"Dali's paintings reveal in the most powerful form the basic elements of the Surrealist imagination: a series of equations for dealing with the extraordinary transformations of our age. Let us salute this unique genius, who has counted for the first time the multiplication tables of obsession, psychopathology and possibility"-J.G. Ballard

          Book Description

Rebel Without a Cause was one of the most talked-about movies of the 1950s. It might also have been the most jinxed. Among its stars, James Dean was soon killed in a car crash, Sal Mineo died several years later, murdered by an unknown assailant, and the beautiful Natalie Wood died mysteriously when she fell from a docked pleasure boat and drowned. This heavily illustrated book recounts these and many other tragic events that have haunted the Hollywood movie community from its early-twentieth-century beginnings to the present day. Here are accounts of the sudden, premature deaths of stars like Rudolph Valentino, Montgomery Clift, and Peter Sellers. Here too are stories about celebrities who died young because of alcohol or drug-related problems—John Belushi and Elvis Presley among many others—and of the tragic 1998 murder of comedian Phil Hartman. Car wrecks, plane crashes, and other deadly accidents sent Jayne Mansfield, Grace Kelly, and Carole Lombard, to untimely deaths, and accidents occurring during film production have taken several lives, perhaps the most dramatic being the helicopter crash that killed Vic Morrow in 1983. The tragic stories of many Hollywood personalities are told in Cut!, the definitive volume on the fleeting lives of movie celebrities, some of whom became more famous in death than they had been in life. Hundreds of photos, many in color.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and fun read.......2007-08-06

I discovered this book at a book store chain but found - of course - a much better price here on Amazon. This book is loaded with succinct but thorough write-ups of every Hollywood celebrity you can imagine who met an untimely death. Macabre but fascinating, it is also loaded to the hilt with photos.

3 out of 5 stars Overall worthwhile, but with glaring omissions.......2007-06-25

Cut! is a densely illustrated compendium of Hollywood's luminaries whose lives have been touched by tragedy, either in their career or in real life. The subtitle indicates "Hollywood murders, accidents, and other tragedies." The expected appear (Sharon Tate, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, William Desmond Taylor, Thelma Todd, Irving Thalberg) but there are a number of obvious stories missing. There is no Peg Entwhistle, the actress who in 1932 famously flung herself to her death from the "H" in the Hollywoodland sign. No Bob Crane, bludgeoned to death in his bed in Phoenix, Arizona, by persons unknown. No Paul Bern, shot to death in Jean Harlow's closet, perhaps by himself, perhaps by an abandoned ex-lover. As someone else pointed out, Olive Thomas, dead from ingesting bichloride of mercury in Paris, is missing; she exists only as a sentence in a page on husband Jack Pickford. Louise Brooks, whose exit from Tinseltown was of her own volition, and who died at a relatively advanced age in Rochester, NY, probably should have been included, rather than some of the little-known players who make an appearance (Ormer Locklear, for example, who died in an airplane stunt in 1920). Jon-Erik Hexum, who accidentally shot himself on the set of his TV series in the 1980s, is missing, arguably more remembered than Gloria Dickson or Dorothy Dell.

More than half the book is made up of people who died relatively young of diseases after having a Hollywood career (Lee Remick, John Garfield, Montgomery Clift), not what I would term a typical Hollywood tragedy conjured up by the title. There is a wealth of information on most celebrities, with very little I saw in the way of errors. One mistake appears twice: in two photo captions from the movie "Poltergeist," the boy in the movie (Oliver Robbins) is miscredited as Heather O'Rourke. Vic Morrow's accidental death along with two children by helicopter blade is relegated to a back section on movie-set tragedies. I am also uncertain as to why Linda Darnell, a B-movie actress, and Richard Farnsworth, a stuntman who came to acting late in life, rate two pages, while more major stars and award-winners like Betty Grable, Judy Holliday, Frank Morgan, Dick Powell, are summed up in one page. Perhaps it is due to the amount of "tragedy" in the subject's life: poor asylum inmate Frances Farmer gets two pages as well.

Also included are quite a number of obscurities, which may be is due to the book's main compilers being film professors and librarians. Who remembers Lya De Putti? Gilda Gray? Rita Johnson? Charles Ray? Mitzi Green? The average film fan has no idea who these long-lost people are, and the extent of their contribution to filmland seems slight.

The print is also exceedingly small, probably in an effort to keep the book from being encyclopedia-sized. Although, I could just be aging...

However, all that being said, it's still a nice reference book for people who love film and celebrities, keeping in mind some of it's more obvious exclusions.

5 out of 5 stars You'll get hours of great reading out of this book!.......2007-04-16

I've been a movie buff since the early 70's, and by now, I thought I pretty much knew it all. This book offers readable, accurate and oftentime surprising biographies of so many people. Reading it, I was blown away by how much (of what I thought to be) obscure information was packed into each page. This book is worth every penny.

          5 out of 5 stars HOLLYWOOD.......2007-02-24

I was very impressed by how fast I received my book after ordering it. It didn't take long at all, in fact, I received it at least 2 days sooner than promised. The book was in excellent condition when I received it and I carry it with me to read whenever I know I'll have extra time.

I'm looking forward to my next purchase.

          5 out of 5 stars Totally addictive.......2006-09-16

Think of it as "Hollywood Babylon" but with more style and credibility. This book about Hollywood celebrities who met untimely deaths is filled with great photos, a nice layout and fascinating lore. The major section of the book is called "The Big Sleep" and is an A-Z profile of film stars who died young from various causes. A chapter titled "Predator" profiles those whose causes of death remain questionable to this day (Marilyn Monroe, William Desmond Taylor, Natalie Wood, etc.) "Dial M For Murder" profiles murder victims such as Sal Mineo, Phil Hartman, Elizabeth Short and Sharon Tate. "Drugstore Cowboy" profiles drug-related deaths (Dorothy Dandridge, Judy Garland, Chris Farley, Elvis Presley, etc.) "Dangerous Liaisons" covers great Hollywood scandals like the Fatty Arbuckle trial, as well as suicides (Charles Boyer, Richard Farnsworth, Capucine). "The Accidental Tourist" includes celebrities who died by accidents (i.e. car wrecks and house fires) and Aaliyah, Linda Darnell, Grace Kelly and Butterfly McQueen. "Lights Camera Death" includes a section of films that are somewhat connected with bizarre death incidents ("The Conquerer," "The Crow," "Our Gang," etc.) The profiles vary from the classic era (Jean Harlow, Roman Navarro, Judy Holliday) to the present (Robert Pastorelli, Divine, John Ritter).

One odd sidenote about the book is that there doesn't seem to be spaces between sentences but somehow it doesn't detract from reading.

              Book Description

We know how a Shakespeare play sounds when performed today, but what would listeners have heard within the wooden "O" of the Globe Theater in 1599? What sounds would have filled the air in early modern England, and what would these sounds have meant to people in that largely oral culture?

In this ear-opening journey into the sound-worlds of Shakespeare's contemporaries, Bruce R. Smith explores both the physical aspects of human speech (ears, lungs, tongue) and the surrounding environment (buildings, landscape, climate), as well as social and political structures. Drawing on a staggeringly wide range of evidence, he crafts a historical phenomenology of sound, from reconstructions of the "soundscapes" of city, country, and court to detailed accounts of the acoustic properties of the Globe and Blackfriars theaters and how scripts designed for the two spaces exploited sound very differently.

Critical for anyone who wants to understand the world of early modern England, Smith's pathbreaking "ecology" of voice and listening also has much to offer musicologists and acoustic ecologists.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars how did the plays and ballads sound?.......2007-02-10

Smith has resurrected for the reader many of the ballads of Middle English [ie. around Shakespeare's time]. Many of these are easily comprehended by the modern reader. Even if you haven't read Shakespeare or Milton lately, the meanings of the ballads comes through very clearly.

But, as the title indicates, he also pays close attention to the acoustics. These refer to the physical environments in which the ballads and plays might and probably were read. Including naturally the immortal Globe Theatre in London. So we see the floor plan of the Globe, and speculation as to how this would have affected the listening experience of the audience. The reader should remember that back then, there were no modern special effects. So the pure performance visuals and acoustics were probably more important and stressed, for what else did they have?

4 out of 5 stars A must for submarine model builders.......2003-01-20

About a 100 good quality of US WWII fleet submarines plus many diagrams and paintings of US subs, armaments, radars and conning tower variations. Good closeup of some of the details that you don't normally get in more conventional submarine books. S-Boats, Argonaut, Narwhal, Dolphin, Cachalot, P-class, Sargo, Tambor, plus the ubiquitous Gato and Balao class boats. If you are a budding fleet submarine model builder you need this book and the Floating Drydocks "Plan Book - Gato & Balao Class Submarines." The only weakness of this book is that it is a little expensive... for a 50 page book.

When Larry Elder talks, sparks fly, and he likes it that way. Fans of the radio talk-show host from Los Angeles, who call themselves Elderados, have dubbed him "the sage from South Central." His critics--and there are many--use names that range from Oreo to the Antichrist. What's it all about? Elder, a libertarian, lays down his controversial views in his first book, which attacks the politically correct, black leaders, feminists, gun-control advocates, and other "so-called liberals." Some of the 10 things you can't say in America include "Blacks are more racist than whites," "There's only a dime's worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats," "The media bias is real, widespread and destructive," and "America's greatest problem is illegitimacy." Elder aims to change the way blacks look at their future, demanding that they take responsibility for their lives, stop blaming all their problems on racism, and pay attention to the progress they've made. While there may be some truth in what he says and even some good news (for instance, the self-esteem of black children is equal to or better than that of whites), this isn't exactly a pep talk. Not surprisingly, his all-out attack on black leaders (whom he calls nutcases and hysterical) and white liberals has engendered a fair amount of hostility. With this kind of dialogue, it's hard to believe Elder's going to win too many converts. But for those who appreciate his views, or are curious about them, this book is a provocative and lively ride into the mind of one of the nation's most outspoken black libertarians. --Lesley Reed

                                      Book Description

For six years, Larry Elder has been igniting passionate debate at the top of the competitive drive-time radio heap on KABC in Los Angeles. In this incisive and thoughtful book, Elder skewers the crippling myths that dominate the public agenda today by saying what no one else will.

Larry has become an icon to me. I am considering distributing this book to my friends and family. I will be buying Larry's other books. Larry is the new force in truth for the American people.

5 out of 5 stars Elder right on the mark............2007-03-15

This book is great. It will really aggrivate the hell out of blacks who believe that if you are a black person that is pro-education,pro-individual,pro-responsibility, pro-fiscal responsibility, anti-separatist,anti-black victimology and recognize that a good chunk of black problems in America result from internal mechanisms that you are some type of strange throw back anti-black term known as a 'house negro'. Elder soundly defeats the 'house negro' calling crowd with sound libertarian logic. This should be required reading in American government schools. If victimology prone blacks are angry at this book for its hard truths, then I think the book is doing its job. A well written sledge hammer of truth backed up by numbers.

                                      4 out of 5 stars Clinton-Era Wake-Up Call.......2006-12-26

My only beef about this book is that I waited too long to purchase it. It was written during the 2000 campaign, and meant as a tocsin for those times. Who knows what a more powerful book the author could have produced after 9/11, increased government spending (by a Republican president!), and more of the same "political correctness" he writes about.

Although I have not yet read it, I suspect he does so so in his second book, "Showdown," published in 2003. He certainly spares neither Democrats or Republicans in "The Ten Things You Can't Say in America" (one of the "things you can't say" is that "there isn't a dime's worth of difference" between the two parties, a suspicion I've had ever since James Carville got engaged to Mary Matalin). But "Ten Things" does suffer a tad from a lack of aging well, and a betting person might do well to invest in "Showdown", instead.

As to Elder's philosophies,I find them well-reasoned and discussed. While the first 2/3 of the book reads as an indictment to the "minority-focused" liberal, who might be shocked to see the sacred cows of affirmative action, multiculturalism, welfare, and others skewered by Mr. Elder's logic, the self-congratulating conservative might find themselves skewered themselves by the equally well-argued final third, which discusses abortion (Mr. Elder advocates access to it); legalization of drugs (he's for it); and the tendency of conservative politicians to want to legislate morality(he is against that, and muses at how that goes against the stated conservative goal to keep government out of our lives).

I learned of "Ten Things" from a conservative publication, and expected it to simply trumpet my own values. Instead, although I did learn better arguments for some of the things I believe, I did find myself challenged in areas often thought of as "liberal territory". For these reasons I do recommend you listen to what Elder has to say, but be aware this book uses older, sometimes resolved arguments to help him do it.

1 out of 5 stars I agree with a lot of what he's says but............2006-10-10

...I'm giving this a 1 star because Elder is simply not a Libertarian. He should stop masquerading because most of us Libertarians don't subscribe to most of his far-right rantings. Larry, for someone who is so focused on proving yourself to black America, you still haven't had the guts to refer to yourself as a black Conservative

5 out of 5 stars Larry Elder is the REAL DEAL.......2006-09-19

I am coming in late on Mr. Elder's thoughts regarding America, but after reading this book, most ALL of what he has to say...I've already thought about at one point or another.

That's NOT to say it's just another "rehash"...quite the contrary. Larry speaks his mind, using common sense approaches and everyday analogies to show each of us that we don't have to labor under the banner of "victimology", whatever race we are.
He states that WE are in control of ourselves, and that WE should be accountable to ourselves first and foremost.

There is NO free ride in Mr. Elder's book, or his rhetoric. And that's a refreshing change of pace from all that we hear and see today.

                                      Victicrats, beware!
