5 out of 5 stars Over two hundred invitations, dance cards and admit cards.......2001-02-27

Over two hundred invitations, dance cards and admit cards are assembled here in a coverage of the art work associated with the Mardi Gras which began in the 1870s and was marked by pageants and private balls. While Mardi Gras Treasures is a specialty collection of interest to those researching New Orleans collectibles and Mardi Gras collectibles in particular, many a reader will delight in these full-page illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Window on a Golden Age.......2000-11-09

Whether your interest is socio-cultural, historical or purely aesthetic, you will treasure Henri Schindler's latest passport to the "Golden Age" of the New Orleans Carnival celebration. Schindler, who is himself a treasure-trove of information on this subject, has put together a most interesting documentary providing an in-depth discussion of the historical roots of the pre-Lenten festival against a background of the artists, illustrators and patrons who gave the "Golden Age" its particular look and ambience. The quality of the color reproductions of the invitations that make up a major part of the book is most impressive. The color and clarity of these (mostly) art nouveau works comes across on each page, leaving the reader with the feeling that he or she has truly been a part of this romantic era.

      Book Description

The Radiance Lighting Simulation and Rendering System is a unique suite of lighting-visualization programs that is capable of true photo-quality light simulation for existing, imagined, or reconstructed scenes. The potential benefits of this facility to computer graphics practitioners, illumination engineers, and designers are enormous, and this unique book makes these benefits accessible by providing a comprehensive tutorial and reference for Radiance.

      * A graduated set of tutorials introduces the new user slowly while allowing the more advanced user to immediately begin at the appropriate level.

      * Five Radiance experts provide extensive example applications in lighting analysis, daylight simulation, animation, roadway lighting, theatre lighting, and exterior lighting, with many full color illustrations.

      * Advanced chapters detail the actual calculation methods Radiance uses for local and global illumination.

Whether the task is to render production-quality animations, design a museum gallery, or present an accurate facsimile of a site in court, Rendering with Radiance is an invaluable resource.

Rendering with Radiance Greg Ward Larson and Rob Shakespeare ISBN 1-55860-499-5, Hard Cover 664 pages; 1998; Morgan Kaufmann Publishers

Many LD+A readers know Radiance as a lighting design and analysis program that was developed by Greg Ward (Larson) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Those who have investigated Radiance know that it is freely available, but usable only if you have a UNIX workstation and the patience to master more than 50 software tools. In ten years, it has attracted a coterie of fewer than 400 dedicated users.

Rendering with Radiance will undoubtedly change this. Originally conceived as a UNIX-style technical manual, the book is much more. It offers several tutorials, numerous application examples, and detailed discussions of the program's underlying mathematical algorithms. The accompanying CD-ROM includes example images, Radiance models and material libraries, reference manuals, and fully commented C source code for Radiance 3.1.

Despite first impressions, this book is not about computer graphics. The Radiance Lighting Simulation and Rendering System was created for advanced lighting designers and academic researchers, and more than half of the book is devoted to applying Radiance to real-world lighting problems. Ward Larson, Shakespeare and three contributing experts discuss luminaire modeling and lighting analysis, daylight simulation, animation, roadway lighting, theatre lighting, and exterior lighting. Even if you have committed yourself to using architectural visualization programs such as Lightscape and RadioRay, you will find an abundance of useful information in this book.

Radiance is the only software program that faithfully models the physical behavior of light, especially specular and semispecular reflections. It has a steep learning curve, but the quality of the architectural renderings it produces is unequalled by any commercial product. With Rendering with Radiance, we now have a user's manual that fully complements the capabilities of its namesake.

This truly is a remarkable book. Unlike most computer graphics texts, it presents lengthy discussions of IES photometric data files, luminance meters and spectrophotometers, the CIE overcast sky model, roadway light metrics, veiling luminance, spectral transmission data, and much more. The major algorithms used by Radiance are fully documented, including discussions of their limitations. There is more information in this book on lighting software use and design than can be found in all other books combined.

The major disadvantage of Radiance is that it was developed for UNIX workstations. In the past, this restricted the use of the program (really a set of UNIX tools) mostly to academic researchers. However, the freely-available and popular UNIX clone Linux now allows Radiance to be run with few difficulties on Windows and Macintosh computers.

5 out of 5 stars Rendering with Radiance is for everyone.......1998-03-19

As a contributor to the text, I am a bit biased, but I do think you will find the book's numerous chapters very helpful for folks of a wide range of skill levels. It is a great resource guide, reference book and tutorial. It includes the Radiance executables for a few Unix platforms on the CD-ROM! These alone will save you an hour or two. The book is well worth the money, but don't take my word for it.

          Book Description

The Last “Darky” establishes Bert Williams, the comedian of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth, as central to the development of a global black modernism centered in Harlem’s Renaissance. Before integrating Broadway in 1910 via a controversial stint with the Ziegfeld Follies, Williams was already an international icon. Yet his name has faded into near obscurity, his extraordinary accomplishments forgotten largely because he performed in blackface. Louis Chude-Sokei contends that Williams’s blackface was not a display of internalized racism nor a submission to the expectations of the moment. It was an appropriation and exploration of the contradictory and potentially liberating power of racial stereotypes.

Chude-Sokei makes the crucial argument that Williams’s minstrelsy negotiated the place of black immigrants in the cultural hotbed of New York City and was replicated throughout the African diaspora, from the Caribbean to Africa itself. Williams was born in the Bahamas. When performing the “darky,” he was actually masquerading as an African American. This black-on-black minstrelsy thus challenged emergent racial constructions equating “black” with African American and marginalizing the many diasporic blacks in New York. It also dramatized the practice of passing for African American common among non-American blacks in an African American–dominated Harlem. Exploring the thought of figures such as Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and Claude McKay, Chude-Sokei situates black-on-black minstrelsy at the center of burgeoning modernist discourses of assimilation, separatism, race militancy, carnival, and internationalism. While these discourses were engaged with the question of representing the “Negro” in the context of white racism, through black-on-black minstrelsy they were also deployed against the growing international influence of African American culture and politics in the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars An exploration of mask and identity.......2006-09-19

Although written for an academic audience, the provocative ideas of this book will be of interest to much broader communities. The author presents a wonderful and intriguing exploration of identity, mask, race and stereotype in his scholarly yet accessible portrait of the fascinating Bert Williams. Through Williams, Chude-Sokei presents an unusual perspective of the West Indian in black and white America. Playing with the layers of perspectives and stereotypes, he explores the cultural mixes and misses from the early 1900's that are still of relevance today.

5 out of 5 stars An Innovative Work of American Intellectual History........2006-08-03

First off, if you are expecting this book to be a straight biography of Bert Williams (as another reviewer obviously did), then this book is not one. And if you have any prejudices against cutting-edge scholarship on the complex histories of black global politics, literature and culture (as that same reviewer also obviously does), then this book is not for you. In fact, if you read the back cover of this brilliant book or its introduction or any of its pages (as the aforementioned reviewer clearly did not), then you will know exactly what this already widely influential book is: a philosophical and political study of the interrelations between African American, West Indian immigrants and Africans before and during the period known as the Harlem Renaissance.

Using Bert Williams-or rather his on-stage persona-as an example of "black on black cross-culturality"-Louis Chude-Sokei presents an intricate and immensely rich alternate reading of literary/cultural modernism. He also presents a daring critique of the implication of African American high and popular culture in American imperialism and American systems of prejudice and power. He also most importantly maps out the tense and productive relationships between non-American blacks and African Americans over the course of the early twentieth century.

Pointing out that for non-American blacks assimilation in America has been always double-into "white" America as well as into/against African America and its global influence-this book traces black on black performances from New York, to the Caribbean, to Europe and to Africa itself. It ranges from carnival and calypso to blues recordings, to Broadway to Hollywood. What links it all in this book is the presence, the memory and the example of Bert Williams, who he describes (via a creative remixing of W.C. Fields' famous quote) as still being The Funniest Man We NEVER Saw and the Saddest Man We NEVER Knew.

A remarkable, poetic and experimental work of the scholarly imagination. This book opens up a conversation and a set of issues that will define this new century.

2 out of 5 stars Broadway Pioneer Captured By Academics.......2006-04-03

If any performer deserves an authoritative biography, it is Bert Williams, who with his partner George Walker, broke the color barrier on Broadway. After illness forced Walker into retirement just after reaching stardom, Williams joined the Ziegfeld Follies, where he worked with many show business legends, among them Eddie Cantor and W. C. Fields. Over the years, Cantor told many wonderful stories about the dignity, humanity, and generous nature of Bert Williams. They're not in the book and Cantor is barely mentioned. Fields described Williams as, "The funniest man I ever saw and the saddest man I ever knew." This book manages to garble the poignant quote and avoid attributing it to Fields, whose name doesn't appear in the index.

While the work contains one or two interesting insights, they are buried under a mountain of trendy academic buzz-words and faux-insightful attempts to attribute Williams with all things good or funny (or both), under the sun. This has the paradoxical effect of diminishing the work of a great artist and obscuring the life of a man who was honestly and justly pained by his life in late 19th and early 20th century America. Rejected by whites because he was black, Williams found little welcome in the black community because he was West Indian.

As it was during his life, so it is with this book: Williams deserves better. In what could have been a fascinating account of the man's life and times, he is barely visible behind a blizzard of witless theorizing designed to wow the Ph.D. set.

"The Last 'Darky': Bert Williams, Black-on-Black Minstrelsy, and the African Diaspora," isn't about its subject, its about its audience.

                    Book Description

It was a foregone conclusion of credible American military minds cognizant of activities in the Middle East and Far East during World War II that the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) showed repeated intentions of expanding their territorial conquests in a converging direction from Germany to Japan, from the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa across Saudi Arabia, India, Burma, and coastal China. Such control of vital land and waterways rich in raw materials . . . would have led to the prolongation of World War II and even possibly altered its final result. The tenacity, resourcefulness, and tactical genius displayed in China by Claire Lee Chennault as expressed first, through his adventuresome American Volunteer Group (AVG) and later, through his leadership of America's smallest Air Force (the fourteenth), helped immeasurably to thwart the Axis powers' ambitious plan. With a minimum of supplies and manpower, this relative handful of Americans remained steadfast in their remote mountain bastion in Kunming, China, as an offensive deterrent to Japanese aggression. This book is written about that struggle, about a near-forgotten band of gallant American airmen who found themselves, like visitors from another planet, in the midst of a strange land at a time of great turmoil. They came not as conquerors . . . but as co-defenders. They were appreciated by the most humble and grateful Chinese. . . . These people would smile to them in recognition, nod approval, and in many cases utter the only mutually recognizable words of communication: "Ding Hao," meaning "It is good." -from the Prologue

2 out of 5 stars Fails as Credible History.......2000-11-04

The goal of a comprehensive history of the air war in China was certainly laudable. At an anecdotal level, it is quite engaging, and as noted in a prior review, could serve well as a source for valuable selected fragments for a more serious, more even, historical effort.

For me, the book failed as a history largely because too much information is taken at face value (e.g. American Kill claims) and insufficient verification (I submit that any serious attempt at documenting the events of WW2 cannot ignore a thorough examination of relevent survivng records of ALL parties). Typical of this is the perpetuation of the Zero vs the AVG myth.

What I found most troubling, however, was author indulging in somewhat jingoistic remarks concerning the Japanese and their capabilities. One such example was the description of an incident wherein a P-40 was rammed by a "Zero", after which the author gratuitously remarked that that was "the only sure way a Zero could knock down a Curtiss fighter." (Having recently had the pleasure to briefly discuss the P-40 with Tex Hill, I'm sure he'd disagree). While forgivable in a contemporary account, such editorializing really detracts from the overall work - particularly a half-century later. If you are looking for a work on the CBI airwar against Japan equal to the standard set by such US/Japan airwar authors as John Lundstrom, you will be most disappointed. Not Recommended.

                    3 out of 5 stars some good first-hand accounts.......2000-07-21

This is a very odd book, apparently the result of a collaboration between a military history buff and a ghost writer. I wouldn't recommend it at all, except that there are some good interviews with Flying Tiger vets including Tex Hill. (I used some excerpts in my own history of the Flying Tigers.) Typical of the early confusion about Japanese aircraft, there's a photo of Hill with a "Zero" fighter--which is very definitely a Nakajima Ki-43, called "Oscar" by Allied pilots.

From the supplier: In one of its rare solemn declarations, the International Labour Conference has just reaffirmed, without opposition, the obligation of all ILO member States to adhere to the principles underlying the ILO's fundamental Conventions - freedom of association and the elimination of forced labour, child labour and discrimination in employment. With the aim not of publishment but of promoting respect for fundamental principles and rights at work, the Declaration sets out procedures for follow-up. In fact, a remarkable text to have been adopted in the political context of the late 1990s. The next step is to put the procedures into practice. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
