Book Description

It's been five years and several prints runs since Mary Engelbreit: The Art and The Artist was first published. Great changes and achievements mark the last five years of Mary's remarkable growth, but what's even more remarkable is what hasn't changed. Mary Engelbreit herself continues to create, by her hand alone, illstrations that have an uncanny knack for reaching an intimate place in the hearts of an ever-growing audience. Cherries, checks, and cottage roses. Straw hats, eyeglasses, vibrant colors, quotes, and decorative borders. All are familiar elements to Mary Engelbreit's millions of fans. Her style is probably more recognized than that of any contemporary illustrator. Fans and collectors around the world know her through her magazine, cards, books, calendars, and other social expression products. This authoritative book follows this amazing artist's career from the moment she first set up shop (a "studio" in her mother's linen closet), through her early years as a developing talents, and on to her current status as the world's premier illustrator. People magazine has called her "a contemporary Norman Rockwell." The Wall Street Journal recently referred to her "vast empire of cuteness." This book will give her fans the most extensive, definitive collection of Mary's works to date.

I bought this book because i was looking for inspiration for some illustrations for a children's book I am working on, and it worked! I've never bought or seen any of ME's other books, but this one is fabulous! I love reading about her home studio and her experiences trying to make a living off her illustrations. The characters she has created are fantastic! I recommend this to anyone who needs inspiration or who wants to have a lovely book to leave on the coffee table for people to flip through, it's colourful and sweet!

5 out of 5 stars This book is unbeliveable in every way..............2001-01-28

Hi i just got this book last night as one of my graduation gifts from one of my many Aunts, she thought i would like it caues im planning on attending art school and she thought that this book would encourg me, and it has, even though i just got this book last night. I flip through the pages and i was so amazed at the drawings Mis.Engelbreit has created, she can take her own imagintion and child like expirence and make it come to life on paper. In this book It tells about her life and how she got started, It says that she started out drawing when she was 11 or younger and i belive it caues there is just to much passion in her work for it not to come from starting out in childhood. And her drawing are just mamerizing, I think every drawing she has ever made is in this one book. i mean you can look at this book for hours on end, i stayed up for hours last night just looking at the drawings alone. I think one of the reasons her art sells is becaues out of all the drawing that she has created someone can pick one and relate to it in one way or the other. This is the first book i own from her but it wont be the last. If you are looking for a sentamentle gift or just want a this wonderful book for yourself or LOVE Mary Engelbret's work and want to know about her and know how she got started then buy this book! It's worth every penny!!

This book was the first one of Mary's that I purchased and it made me want to have more of her wonderful volumes. When you are not feeling too great, this will cheer you up ... it has the ability to transport you back to your childhood and to happier, gentler times. The artwork is so beautiful and almost edible!

This book is a great escape from the everyday world of the ordinary into Mary's world of bright and cheerful whimsy. It's perfect for sitting back and nestling down because of its warm, friendly, and comfortable format. I will buy this for Christmas gifts.

5 out of 5 stars LEGENDS OF "B" MOVIE LORE!.......2005-10-04

The Astounding B Monster is one of the best site on the internet for fans of "b" movies and cult films. Culled from the fantastic website, author Marty Baumann presents 26 interviews with the filmmakers and actors responsible for some of the most famous (and infamous) "B" films in history. While many of the interview subjects may not be household names, the films they were associated with will forever live on in cinema lore.

Take James Arness for example. Arness IS a household name from his two decades in the starring role of Marshal Dillon on Gunsmoke. But it was the Sci-Fi film "The Thing from Another World" that gave the young Arness his first big break in Hollywood. At a time when doing a horror or sci-fi film was considered a step down for most actors, Arness relished the opportunity to work with noted Director/Producter Howard Hawks and has nothing but fond memories of his role. He tells a hilarious story about getting out of a limo in full "Thing" make-up and buying a newspaper from a terrified street vendor.

Bruce Campbell has moved from "B" list actor to a major Hollywood star but it was in Sam Raimi's deliciously gore-filled and darkly humorous "Evil Dead" films that the lantern-jawed star first made his name. Among other tidbits, Campbell explains the credits attributed to "fake Shemps" in these films.

The late Alex Gordon was a producer and screenwriter. He produced such films as "The Day the World Ended", "The She Creature", and "Voodoo Woman" and also wrote the screenplay for the last complete film that Bela Lugosi starred in, "The Bride of the Monster". Gordon takes issue with Tim Burton's Biopic of Ed Wood, specifically saying that Lugosi never used the kind of profanity that Burton had the character use and never spoke disparagingly about Boris Karloff.

The late Leo Gordon was a tough-guy actor noted for his roles in westerns such McLinktock! with John Wayne. But Gordon also had a an incredible list of writing credits including such "B" classics as "Attack of the Giant Leeches", "The Wasp Woman", and "The Terror" for Roger Corman.

Other subjects interviewed in the book include Anne Francis from "Forbidden Planet", Fess Parker of "Them", Lori Nelson of "Revenge of the Creature" and 50's and 60's blonde bombshell, Mamie Van Doren.

The reviews are short but informative and very fun. Baumann does a wonderful job of keeping alive some of the forgotten names of "B" movie lore. A magnificent book!

This is a book well worth your time and money. It basically features interviews with many stars from 1950's genre pictures. They have a lot of fascinating, incisive things to say both about their movie careers and the state of movies today. This is great fun. Buy it.

        Book Description

Trojan Records started life in 1967 as an offshoot of Chris Blackwell's Island Records. By 1969 it had hit its stride, and for the next six years Trojan ruled the reggae roost, with over 30 charted hits. Luminaries like Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle, and Dennis Brown were introduced by Trojan, and Bob Marley's first UK album, Soul Rebels, was issued on the label. Trojan also issued the breakthrough Tighten Up compilations. What fans could not know were the cutthroat politics, cultural divisions, racism, and entrepreneurial pressures that drove the label's success and ensured its demise. This book tells that story through rare interviews with surviving artists and musicians of the label. Dozens of photographs and a 12-track sample CD with notes are included.

Trojan Records was reggae's Motown. It's back catalog is vital listening. For the uninitiated, putting down your dollars for one of their great compilations, which usually contain extensive liner notes, would probably be a better place to start. YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK is more or less a history of the inner workings of the Trojan Records label and staff rather than a document of the artists that it promoted so well. While the story is interesting, and it's a story you won't get anywhere else, the book would have been well served to spend more time discussing the music rather than the music business. The book is 300 pages long but the story ends about halfway through. The second half of the book is merely a printed catalog of all Trojan releases to date (which fills 150 pages!) and underlines the fact that YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK was meant for avid collectors only. Too bad they couldn't have filled those last 150 pages with more tales of Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, or the Maytals as all of theses artist are only cited in passing in the story. The CD which accompanies the book is great but it can be purchased seperately.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-09

Not only is this book great for pool, but the knowledge you can aquire is easily applicable to other activities and aspects of life. It can take a while to read since it is pretty mind bending to absorb it all, but well worth it.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-07-10

Each chapter offered great advice on the mental game of pool. Immediately after reading the book, I could tell that my game had picked up a notch. (And exactly one month after reading the book, my 8-ball skill level in my pool league was also raised a notch.)

I learned to stop putting pressure on myself to play my "best game" in high-pressure situations (think about it: if your "best" game happened all the time, it would be your "normal" game) and instead concentrate on playing MY game, the one that I am accustomed to playing most of the time.

I also learned to stop concentrating on making the ball - something that I already know how to do - and to start concentrating on the mechanics of my stroke, something that frequently causes me to MISS the ball!

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his or her game, regardless of skill level. This book will teach you to think realistically about your game and to put your existing talents to better use.

5 out of 5 stars A Pool Players Pocket Guide..........2006-05-27

This small, but powerful book is essential for the player who wants to raise their game and move on to the next level. I try and play pool everyday. I can make shots, no problem. Once you conquer the fundamentals and basics it's time to move on and extend your skills: your mental skills.

Your mentality is the other essential half to playing pool. "Pleasures of Small Motions" completes this element. This book deconstructs the psychological components in different situations (fun vs competition play). Once I read this book I noticed a major difference in my game; I was more confident, and in effect, I made balls cleaner and `set up' was a breeze. "Pleasures of Small Motions" helps you harness your emotions, and if needed, teaches you to unleash them (physically or not).

All in all, this book is perfect for your collection, or perhaps the beginning of one.

            Book Description

The two-week battle for Corregidor was complicated by the American's gross underestimation of enemy strength: expecting a few hundred demoralized defenders, they encountered more than 6,000 Japanese soldiers and marines deployed in tunnels and caves, every man dedicated to the Bushido code that dictated a fight to the death. As the dust was settling, MacArthur himself came ashore and was greeted by the commander of the victorious U.S. Army troops. 'Sir,' said Col. George Jones, 'I present to you the Fortress Corregidor'--a stirring conclusion to a dramatic and well-told story.--Publishers Weekly

4 out of 5 stars Assualt From The Sky........2002-06-15

"Corregidor: The Rock Force Assault" is the story of the island by that name which has played a prominent role in the defense of Manila Harbor. This book gives a good history of the island and the troops who recaptured it in 1945.

The book begins with the story of the conquest of the Philippines by American Forces in 1898 during the Spanish American War. It then continues with the military fortifications of the island during the American Administration. The Japanese conquest of the Philippines culminating in the Fall of Bataan and Corregidor in 1942 set the stage for the American reconquest.

Flanagan does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the assault forces, the 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team and the 3rd Battalion Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division. We become familiar with the preparations of the 503d in the U. S., Australia and in its jumps at Nadzab in New Guinea and onto Noemfoor Island.

With the invasion of the Philippines proceeding successfully the hour for the redemption of American honor at Corregidor arrived. The small available drop zones on the island made the airborne assault most unlikely and, therefore, a total surprise to the Japanese defenders. Flanagan takes the reader through the challenges met by the assault force, the means of attack by air, sea and land, the Japanese resistance and the descriptions of the ambient conditions which add to the hellish atmosphere of war. The fanatical Japanese resistance captures our amazement while the cave by cave extermination of the enemy brings to mind contemporary reports form Afghanistan.

The emotional climax of the book is Gen. MacArthur's triumphant return to Corregidor, by PT boat, just as he left three years before, during which he orders: "I see the old flag pole still stands. Have your troops hoist the colors to its peak and let no emery ever haul them down."

"Corregidor" is an excellent choice for anyone with an interest in the details of combat or the history of the War in the Philippines.

5 out of 5 stars The Impossible Mission.......1999-12-11

An amazinf feat of daring by a group of outnumbered Paratroopers, less than 3000, fighting against the best Japan had, namely Japanese Imperial Tiger Marines. Their strength was said to be over 6800. Only 21 Japaneses surrendered , 17 lived surviving their wounds. A tale of total disregard of human life. Corregidor was a small island fotress built by the US prior to WW2 and carried 56 major cannon emplacements behind concrete walls over 25 feet thick in parts and some sited over 600 feet above some of our forces. At the end of the battle over 6000 Japanese bodies covered the ground and fostered billions of flies and maggots entering our mouths while trying to eat or talk. A horrible experience which cannot be described in mear words. I was there.

                Book Description

Investigator Danny Casolaro's 1991 death in a Martinsburg, West Virginia hotel opened the door to a world of conspiracy and intrigue that continues to haunt today's headlines. This fully revised and updated edition unveils the hidden political and technological realities behind the culture of contemporary global warfare. It contains photographs, illustrations, and new chapters on conspiracy in the death of Princess Diana, the suspicious death of coauthor Jim Keith, and the events of 9/11. A timely book, The Octopus is as harrowing as the best spy fiction — only it's real and it's happening now.

4 out of 5 stars Questions. Questions. Questions.......2007-08-08

I read this book about a week ago and I have to say that although it was quite informative, it left many holes. Unfortunately, we may never know exactly what happened to Danny Casolaro because powers that be will prevent it from becoming public knowledge. The book was mostly a gripping tale about his life as he tried to expose connections between the CIA, drug trafficking, hollywood, and weapons procurement in a tax free Indian reservation. The book lost me when they added a chapter about Lady Diana which had absolutely no connection to his death other than the CIA knowing about it. Still if you want some forbidden knowledge, I'd recommend the book anyway. It is a fairly quick and easy read.

                1 out of 5 stars A terrible ratatouille.......2007-07-18

This book begins with an investigation into an attempt to corner the market for law enforcement software and ends with the death of Princess Diana and 9/11. One needs a formidably extended elastic to find a link between the latter events and the death of Dany Casolaro.
It is a very meager extension of L. Fletcher Prouty's book `The Secret Team'.
The only interesting pages are those explaining the PROMIS program (and backdoor software) and its ability to track movements of vast numbers of people around the world by tapping into the computers of, e.g., utility and credit card companies. Example: A sudden change in water consumption could mean that a person has `guests'.

                I cannot recommend this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Important Book.......2007-04-16

If you read a good newspaper, watch the network news, get a weekly news periodical (all of which I do) and think you pretty well understand American politics (as I did) then you REALLY REALLY need to read this book. I have come to believe that one cannot possibly understand how this country operates by getting one's information from the mainstream press.

If you find some of the information a little hard to believe and you are tenmpted to dismiss it, you might want to try to do a search on the relevant topic. You will almost always find supporting information.

                3 out of 5 stars still unsatisfied........2007-01-03

This book is interesting, but many questions remain unanswered. In this kind of affairs, the number of protagonists, places and sub-affairs -the whole surrounded by a thick haze of secrecy and deceit- gives a headache...and is somehow frightening...but in the same time I think we feel unsatisfied. We'd like to go farther and deeper. Is it a kind of addiction ?

4 out of 5 stars A Classic of Conspiracy Literature.......2006-11-10

It's easy to wave this stuff away, but when you sit down and read it carefully the blood starts to drain out of your face. Paranoid? Certainly. Plausible? Absolutely.

With what we've learned about the workings of government in the name of national security over the last ten or twenty years, it's difficult to dismiss "Octopus" ... much stranger stuff has proven true. Skeptics should read and think before making fun. It's pretty damn clear Danny Casolaro didn't kill himself.

Danny Casolaro was a relatively wealthy individual who decided he wanted to become a writer. He already had a few articles published in various magazines when he first learned about the PROMIS software. Basically, PROMIS is a database program with amazing flexibility and statistical abilities and can also be used to predict future trends, submarine locations, etc. This software was developed by private individuals with some help in funding by the U.S. Department of Justice. However, the government decided to [take] the program instead of paying for it and began to market it as their own. This information is widely known and well-accepted and much documentation of this exists (including a successful lawsuit by the software developers that was later overturned on the flimsiest of grounds through the interference of the powers that be). However, when Casolaro set out to write an article about the robbery of the PROMIS program by the government, potentially to sell it to a computer magazine, the deeper he dug, the more sinister things became.

First of all, he learned that the DOJ had a backdoor added into the program so that the U.S. could access the files of whoever they sold the PROMIS program to, including the governments of Israel and Canada. This led to further revelations and meetings with various informants that further revealed a complex web of deceit leading down some surprising avenues. Casolaro now changed his plans to writing a novel, perhaps even presenting it as fiction in order to avoid scaring off publishers. But before this happened, Casolaro was found dead from what was an obviously staged suicide and many of his notes disappeared.

This very well documented book (that also verifies and is verfied by information published elsewhere) chronicles Casolaro's story, citing many excellent sources, including court records and affidavits. It also attempts to recover and recount some of the information about the conspiracy Casolaro began to call "the Octopus" because of its many, long-reaching tendrils. While it is not always clear Casolaro was on the right track (Casolaro himself often took note of what information seemed manufactured to mislead and discredit him), it is clear he was onto something big given his subsequent murder and its sloppy coverup.

Casolaro might have led a comfortable life as a mediocre writer publishing the occassional article, but because of his sense of justice and the need he felt to uncover the truth, he was ruthlessly murdered. This book is a wonderful epitaph to two courageous men (including co-author Keith who mysteriously died from knee surgery).

                5 out of 5 stars A Frightening Indictment.......1999-09-28

Kenn and Jim's magnum opus. (RIP, beloved friend to humankind.) This book is as scary as they come, and stranger than fiction. As a conspiracy writer, I found myself shaking while reading it. THEY are real, and THEY can do and have done horrifying things. The Octopus is the Matrix vivified.

This book is especially important for anyone who still naively believes "there are no conspiracies." The word "conspiracy" means "to breathe together." Only two people are needed to make a conspiracy, and this book will leave you breathless.

Danny Casolaro is a heroic figure who bravely and, perhaps, foolhardily attempted to foil the Octopus, whose tendons reach into the most intimate parts of all our lives. He should never be forgotten. Thank goodness for the valiant likes of Kenn Thomas and Jim Keith for telling his story. Movie studios should be clamoring for this highly untold story - but they are no doubt part of the Octopus. Danny, Kenn and Jim should be lauded for their audacity and courage in bringing forth this treacherous tale of murder and mayhem. Such valor is akin to that of Gary Webb in his expose of CIA drug-dealing.

Carry on, fellow warriors for truth.

5 out of 5 stars JIM KEITH, HONORED FRIEND, 1949-1999.......1999-09-11

Jim Keith died after knee surgery on September 8, 1999. He was a dear friend of mine and an important person to the world. The loss is immeasurable. He was not just the co-author of The Octopus, but a dharma combatant who demonstrated time and again that the world is far more multi-dimensional, far more interesting, than the pablum that usually passes for news, information and normal discourse. Unfortunately, it is also far more dangerous.

Rumor has it that Jim may have been killed because he mentioned the name of the physician who declared Diana was pregnant at the time of her death. I have long noted the connections between Diana's death and the Octopus. Diana was the subject of Jim's last column for Nitro News, which has been linked via the web site of my magazine, Steamshovel Press, for the past couple of weeks. Nitro News has not been accessible since Jim's death, although I reached it just before receiving word of his passing.

This rumor may be nonsense. Casolaro may have committed suicide. It is the way of the Octopus. It exists but it doesn't exist. These are blood clots or suicides or non-suspicious homicides or real accidents. They just happen to cluster coincidentally around a certain set of facts or a certain perception of an organized conspiracy.

And if Jim Keith did not die as a result of a conspiracy, then I'm sure he would want us to make it look that way!

I hope all will remember Jim Keith for his good humor and for his fearlessness. He wrote what he knew and he let the chips fall where they might. He lived on the edge, where I usually tried to catch up with him. I hope he taught me enough about the place to keep up the work to which we were both committed.

                Thank you again. Remember Jim!
